Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo
Gina

Veteran’s Day half marathon recap
[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I like 5k’s we move a lot due a pcs with the navy so the 5ks are something myself and my boys always have to look forward to in each new home!
Love the purple Garmin — it matches my iphone case! My favorite running distance is a half marathon.
I really like 8km!! Any run outside is perfect!! Snow go away!!
I also tweeted you!

I love half marathons! I used to love to run in the hot hot heat, but now I totally love and prefer the cold!!! (go figure!). I am hoping to get into the NYC Marathon this year after three years of not making the lottery drawing. It will be my first marathon 🙂
I love the 13.1 distance did 5 of them last year with the big heavy 305 on my wrist. I wish it would die so I could get a new one! Yours looks perfect!
Wow, a purple garmin!! Believe it or not, I haven’t run any distance 4 half marathons but my all time favorite race/experience was a tough mudder in 2011. I loved it so much I refuse to do another one in fear that I will hate it!
My favorite running distance is definitely 10 k’s and I am going to run one as a couple with my boyfriend coming Sunday!!
I would love to win a Garmin!
I’m comfortable with a 5K now and that makes me so proud considering I thought I could never do it! I would love to tackle a 10K next!
What a cute watch!
My fav is the 10k, although I’m planning to run my first half this fall! I am leaning toward Savannah, but might consider the AZ one now… is the course pretty flat? I’m a hills wuss.
I tweeted @hybridhanna
I second your thoughts on 10ks! They’re the best.
I love half marathons!! It´s perfect, not too short, not too long and not too fast! 🙂
My favorite distance is 10k, without a doubt. Long enough to be challenging, but short enough that I can do one without much training if I want to.
I’m just now getting into running so the 5k is my kind of run!
I’m the same way, 10ks are the perfect distance. Not too long that you get bored but long enough to get a great run in and feel accomplished. Why they don’t organize more of them, I have no idea!
My favorite run length is not running! BUT… I’ve worked myself up to a 5k (on a good day) and am looking for a 5k to run in the area, so that’s my goal run right now.
As much as I love marathons, I’d say the half is my favorite since the training doesn’t completely take up all your free time!
I love running half-marathons for races. For training runs I’m very happy with the 6-8 mile distance. I actually haven’t tried a 10k, you’re right, where did they all go!

(sorry if this appears twice, i was told I am posting comments to quickly)
I am also training for a half marathon, the Lululemon Seawheeze in August in Vancouver, it will be my first! I really enjoy 5-10km races, but after August, I’ll see if a half is my new fav distance!! 🙂
I loove 5k’s! I love the endurance I get from doing them regularly, along with my 4 mile training runs! Getting ready to rock my first 1/2 this summer!!!! xo
Hi Gina! I would LOVE to win!! I’ve been training for my first half marathon (the nike women’s) in DC at the end of this month. Training has challenged me mentally and physically but it’s been an amazing journey that has made me so much stronger. I agree with you and think 10k is my fave distance so far! Fingers crossed that I get to rock that Garmin crossing the finish line 🙂
I tweeted! @epryor is me 🙂
I really love pushing myself through marathons & ultras, so I guess I’d have to say those are my favorite even though I love running all distances!
I loved my last half, but the distance I consistently love is a 10k. You feel like you’ve accomplished something, but can walk the next day.
I also tweeted. I also hate the word “tweeted.”
I love those marathons. There’s just something about that long distance and pushing though to the finish!
My favourite outdoor exercise is hiking. We have a beautiful trail that used to be a railway track not too far from our home – it cuts straight through the ocean, so it’s as if you’re literally walking on water! It’s stunningly beautiful and I could walk for hours on it.
I am not a runner, but I do enjoy a nice long walk with my dogs. I also enjoy swimming outside when the Ohio weather permits.
My fave distance is the half-marathon! I’m running my sixth this weekend, and my seventh next month! Unfortunately, my Garmin has DISAPPEARED, so I could really use a new one!
my fave distance is the half marathon. long enough to feel like a badass but not to long to suck up all your free time.
I love the 13.1 distance, I feel so accomplished when I finish that distance.
HI, I have been looking at the Garmin’s a lot…I’m new to running and just trying to figure out if its going to be my love like so many people I know, so I dont run very far yet. I would love to win this Garmin.
Right now for outdoor activities, I hike and swim (when its warm enough) and play with my dog.
Thanks for the opportunity!
I love 10K’s too! And I totally agree that there seem to be less and less of them as the years go by. It’s sad, because I think it’s the perfect distance to train for in a short time. I’ve been wanting to buy a running watch for the loongggest time but can never bring myself to spend the cash. The new Garmin is so petite & that purple color is awesome!
Half Marathon all the way!
My fave running distance is the 5k. Any more and I get a little bored…
I tweeted!
My favorite distance is 10k. It’s the perfect distance (for me) to enjoy running without actually getting to the point where I’m alternating a positive running mantra with “WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS”. I love switching up workouts, HIIT 2x a week and have recently gotten into crossfit, but 5-7 mi runs have been pretty consistent in my workout ‘schedule’. Sometimes it’s just nice to lace up a pair of sneaks and hit the road. 🙂
That purple Garmin would be perfect for my new running workouts! I have just started running in the past year and would love to have a better way of tracking my distance/pace!!!
awesome giveaway!
My favorite distance is the half marathon, good luck on yours and hope your training goes well!
I tweeted about you on “Tweeter” as my mother refers to it 🙂 Have a great day Gina!
I also tweeted! (@ekaty84)
My favorite distance has got to be 10 miles outside, for some reason just hitting the double digits makes me feel super accomplished!
I love 5K’s. They are the perfect distance to either kick my butt if I try for speed, or can be a leisurely run if I don’t want something intense!
I know that this is kind of random but when I was training for my half marathons I really loved my 8 mile training runs. They seemed hard core but they didn’t wipe me out for the whole day.
I tweeted!! 🙂
I would have to say the 10k is my favorite for races, at least so far! I am planning on running a half marathon in the fall and I am so excited!! Ha a garmin would be so much easier to run with than my phone with the Nike app!
I have never raced more than 5k but have run the 10k distance multiple times over the last couple years, so that’s going to be my next goal! I just hope I can find one in my area at the right time schedule-wise since I know I would need to get at least a few long runs in in the weeks leading up to race day. Fingers crossed I can find one later this spring!
