Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]

I like half marathons!
I want to work up to 10K even though 4 is my comfortable distance now!
I am training for a half right now and I really enjoy the 18km runs. My dog even carries our water in her backpack which is awesome.
My favorite running distance is 10k, but I’m looking forward to running my first half marathon at the end of this year!
I am not much of a long distance runner, but I love hiking. Surprisingly, since moving to Atlanta, my husband and I are able to go hiking almost every weekend which has been amazing.
I would much rather be outdoors than in a gym 🙂

I love 5k’s! (not the races, but that’s my ideal outdoor running distance! When I’m treadmill running, it’s usually intervals)
tweet tweet @hillontherun 🙂
My favorite running distance is a 5K!
I tweeted!
I like 13.1!!
Tweeted as well!
I like doing 5 miles on the treadmill…I should increase my distance and start running outside and that Garmin would be great for that, plus the purple is super cute.
Half-marathon! That way I can run slowly… 5ks make me feel like I’m dying!
10ks are my favorite too. I am running a 1/2 marathon in June, and would LOVE a Garmin as a training partner!!
My favorite distance is the 5K because it’s the only one I’ve been able to achieve until now! I’m hoping to build up to 10K this summer 🙂 Really hoping your contest is open to Canadian readers!
I think my fave distance is 10 miles. I have done a half and a full marathon and while I love them too, 10 is just about perfect!
My favorite outdoor workout is cycling or hiking! I’ve been bouldering too, but I’m not sure I have the courage to do actual outdoor rock climbing yet…haha! :
I like 3 milers, that way my dogs can come and they don’t get too worn out. I’ve also done a 12 mile obstacle course and I really enjoyed that. The breaks between running made it bearable and way more exciting!
I love any distance! Always just happy to be able to run injury free!
I tweeted! (@arianedou7)
I have a 5K + obstacle race called the Spartan Race coming up in 1.5 weeks that I am scary excited/nervous for! After that I’m hoping to tackle a 10K! That Garmin sure would come in handy, plus that purple color is beauuuutiful! 😉
I love yoga in the park during the summer! So great to breath in all that fresh air!
I am loving 3 miles right now – trying to push myself to go longer!
My favorite distance is 5k. I know they’re shorties but they are just so darn FUN!
The 15k has been my go to distance lately! Requires training, but nothing too intense, and you’re finished in just over an hour!
When not training for something specific, my favorite distance is an even 5 miles.
I tweeted! @kandinoel
I love 5ks but lately I have been enjoying even longer runs… Like 10 ish miles. That’s assuming I don’t get a cramp or any other loveliness 🙂
I did my first 5k in Feb and haven’t run since. I just started back this morning to train for a 5k in May! So funny that you are talking about running today. I’m going to try for the 10k after I’m done with the 5 in May. See if I’m a distance or pace kinda runner!
My favorite distance is definitely the 10k, the perfect distance for me to work a sweat but not wear me out too much =)
I love to run anywhere from 3-5 miles. It’s the perfect distance for me!
I have never ran more than a 5k. But, that will change this summer. I am training for a half Ironman which requires a13.1 mile run
10K is my favorite distance, b/c I can train for it without messing up my “usual” workout routine TOO much. Half marathon is my challenge length — so far i can’t imagine running any longer than that!
And I’ve tweeted here: https://twitter.com/lucy2350/status/319471638464851969 =D

I love 5k’s especially in new cities, but I would love to run a half marathon. . . One day! Maybe this Garmin would help me reach my goal!
I started running 2 and a half years ago and last year was the year of the half. The Disney Princess was my first one and I fell in love! I ran 3 more, with 5 and 10k’s in between. The half is definitely my favorite distance, as it requires me to follow a training plan ( otherwise I’ll just run a few miles every now and then).
We didn’t have the mildest of winters here, so my motivation to run was almost inexistent… So I can totally relate to you! It got so bad that a few weeks ago I ran the rock’n’roll DC half after having completed a whooping 15 miles the entire month prior to the race (determination and incredible good luck got me to the finish line injury-free, but I don’t want to repeat this experience ever again). Even though it was tough (and again, I have no one to blame but myself) I realized that I’m in love with the half! It’s challenging enough, but training for one is not as time consuming and rough on my body as a full marathon.
So with a lesson learned and warmer weather outside I am slowly starting to go outside and train for my next half!
When I run, I normally run 10 miles and on Saturdays I run 14 – 18 miles for my “long” run of the week. I LOVE running.
4.5 miles is my favorite distance, it sounds a bit random and it is…..it’s my favorite distance because it’s a run I can do from my front door to a river that runs through my city to the University and back (also I can do this while my toddler naps on weekends!). It’s a beautiful run and enough to clear my mind giving me what I need to tackle another day. I’m “training” for a half marathon next month (yikes) and would LOVE to win the Garmin, the purple is pretty!
I just started running, so I’m just going to go with saying that the shortest distance possible is my favorite at this point! Hopefully that will change soon!
I am 8 1/2 months pregnant with my first baby so technically as of now I am a non-runner 🙂 I like to go for a walk at our local park-which just put in a long distance trail for walkers/runners. As a runner, I’d like to run a color run or mud run after the baby is born-Something fun that will get me back to that runner’s high!
I love short runs…always feel great fater them.
My favorite running distance is 13.1 miles.
I’m a beginning runner hoping to complete my first 5k in June! Right now that’s my favorite distance – but I’m hoping to build up to a half marathon!
I also tweeted!
my favorite running distance is anywhere from 3-4 miles. after that, injuries pop up!
So far my fave distance is the 10k! I’m about to do my first race in that distance at the end of this month and could not be more excited!
10K is my favorite right now. It’s do-able for me, but I want (and am working towards) a half marathon being my favorite. I don’t have a garmin, so I’m kind of hit or miss in trying to pace/distance/time myself.
