Happy 3 months, Penelope! (+ an Owlet giveaway!)

Guess who is 3 months old? That’s a quarter of a year! I can’t even.

3 months 3

Miss P is still smiling like crazy, babbling and cooing to her heart’s delight, and chewing on her hands like they’re a delectable treat. I’m convinced that she’s teething because she is always gnawing on her hands, but the ped said she’s still a little young to be teething. Either way, she’s growing like crazy.

3 months 2

We hit a major turning point with the reflux. A huge part of the puzzle was switching her to Elecare formula (as sad as I was to give up breastfeeding), and thickening it with brown rice cereal. At first, I couldn’t help but think “she’s way too little,” but when she still wasn’t gaining weight appropriately, I was willing to try whatever the ped suggested. For the first time EVER, she gained a pound in between weight checks! I was so, so thrilled. The Elecare formula is very thin and watery, so it was all coming back up (but she was no longer screaming or choking on it). A teaspoon of rice cereal has made the formula stay down, so she’s gaining weight now and HAPPY. I also think that like anything, time has been a huge factor. As her body as matured a little bit, it’s been easier for her to eat and keep it down so, so much better.

3 months

Some of the things she loves this month:

Her Lamaze mermaid. She thinks chewing on her hair is awesome

Practicing her roll

Snuggles before nap time. I’ll lie with her on our bed until she’s calm and comfy before transferring her to the bassinet or crib

Hanging out with her big sis

Livi and p

“This Little Piggy” and “Pat A Cake”

Bath time with Liv

Miss P is officially too big for the bassinet, and we’re slowly transitioning her to the crib. We’re also going to ditch the swaddle since she’s thisclose to completely rolling over. Big changes ahead! I was horrified about having her sleep in another room, especially because of the choking episodes, but we got something that has given me peace of mind: the Owlet Baby Care Smart Sock.

Owlet

I had been looking at monitoring options online, and combed through so many reviews. I didn’t want something that was notorious for false alarms, and also wanted something a little more dependable than strictly movement-sensored or audio based. While we have a video monitor, it doesn’t paint a full picture of how the baby is doing, and I was worried that if she choked during the night, I wouldn’t be able to hear it on the monitor with the sound turned out. The Owlet was everything we needed, and needless to say, I was thrilled and so thankful when they offered to send us one.

Owlet 2

What I love about the Owlet:

-The technology is at-home pulse oximetry monitoring for babies, which monitors heart rate and oxygen levels. This is the same technology they use at doctor’s offices and hospitals, in a portable, soft little sock.

-You slip the sock on the baby’s left foot, and the data is monitored and accessible through your smart phone and through a base station in another room. We have the pod set up on my nightstand, which illuminates in green. If there’s ever a problem, an alarm will sound and the base station will turn red. I love that I can check and see how she’s doing during nap time and view her stats for peace of mind. The base is independent of wifi, so if your phone dies, you can count on it to alert you if your baby’s rate dips too low, rises too high, or oxygen levels dip below a preset threshold.

You can check out a video of Owlet Baby Care in action here.

Owlet 3

-As you guys know, we had some pretty horrific choking incidents with the reflux. Since then, it’s been my greatest fear that P will choke during the night. This is why she’s been in the bassinet, right next to me, for so long. Now I feel like we can transition her to another room, without my anxiety driving me up the wall.

I’ve been so thankful and thrilled with the technology that I reached out to my friends at Owlet to see if they’d mind giving one away to a lucky reader. They said yes! 🙂

  3. Anna on February 2, 2016 at 7:50 pm

Hi Gina! I would love to win this so I could give this to my sister who gave birth to her first daughter Ella 7 weeks early. After over seven years of trying, and countless cycles of IVF, my niece was born earlier this January and will hopefully be leaving the NICU to come home this week! As a preemie, she had had multiple episodes of ‘forgetting’ to breathe. She has been doing so amazingly well, but her final milestone that she must pass before getting to come home is not having a one of these breathing spells for five consecutive days. I would love to be able to give my sister and her husband the peace of mind for when they bring their miracle baby home. Thank you!

I would love to win this! I’ve been researching safety monitors and this has been at the top of my list since reading about it. I’m expecting our first baby (boy) in May and feel this would put any first times moms mind at ease!!

My husband and I hope to be expecting again soon… Ever since I stumbled upon this product I’ve wanted it, bad! This seems like the product that could’ve allowed me to sleep during that first year of my son’s life… Haha. But really, it would ease the stress level greatly!

I am pregnant and wish they had the Owlet with my first baby. She was a lot like P with the choking plus she had other issues from her CHD that was terrifying. I really want this for my next baby!

  9. Meagan Leanne on February 2, 2016 at 8:25 pm

This isn’t something I need right now but I was wondering how well it stays on? I know babies can get fidgety when wearing things maybe they’re not in the mood to wear so how easily can it get kicked off?

  10. Venessa on February 2, 2016 at 8:35 pm

I want an owlet so bad!! Due March 21st and this would seriously give me peace of mind. I already have a toddler and my biggest fear is that I will be helping my daughter and not notice baby choking or something. Thank you so much for doing this giveaway!!

I have an 11 week old baby boy who we are just now transitioning to the crib so this would be so nice for the piece of mind! I love the little monitor that sits on your nightstand too – one quick glance to let you know baby is safe and sound. So neat!

  14. Sara on February 2, 2016 at 8:52 pm

We’re expecting in 7 weeks and as a first time mom the paranoia is already setting in. I can only imagine what a nervous wreck I’ll be once she is here! The Owlet sounds like such a great tool to ease the mind!

My little guy is three months old tomorrow and would love the owlet to lessen nighttime anxiety. He has reflux as well but we’ve been lucky to be able to continue breast feeding. I sleep on the couch near his room, just in case. It would be nice to sleep in bed again! Thanks for considering us. 🙂
Ps- super fun to watch you work out while pregnant. I did the same. My neighbors thought I was nuts running while pushing my 16 month old while 9 months pregnant. Nice to know there are others out there!

  18. Sarah on February 2, 2016 at 9:24 pm

Cool product! I like that it looks comfy for babe too.

  19. Lindsay on February 2, 2016 at 9:26 pm

I have been eyeing the Owlet Smart Sock for a while! I’m a first time mom to an (almost) 3 month old and I’m absolutely terrified to transition him to his crib, despite that it’s right across the hall! My maternity leave us up next week and I know we should begin the crib transition soon, but I just can’t bring myself to do it… The anxiety is too much! No kidding, our first night home from the hospital, I cried when it was bedtime because my anxiety was through the roof that something would happen to him! Luckily, the tears at bedtime have stopped for me, but I still worry about him being safe at night.
We had a choking incident while still in the hospital and it was awful, so incredibly scary! I even pressed “the red button” and WOW did the room full with nurses FAST! I’m so thankful that it hasn’t happened since then, but my goodness, I know how terrifying that is!

This is such a neat baby gift idea! I’d love to give this to a friend who is due in July.

  31. Maggie on February 2, 2016 at 10:48 pm

This would be a blessing to win. We are finally expecting baby #2 and my first had reflux and sleep on an incline on an angel care mat. This seems like a much better option.

Ps I’ve followed and commented on Instagram as well.

  32. RachelG on February 2, 2016 at 11:05 pm

I would definitely use one of these once Little Miss actually likes to sleep anywhere but our nice warm arms. 🙂

  33. Amanda on February 2, 2016 at 11:51 pm

I would love one of these. We just brought our first baby home from the hospital a few days ago, so I would be keeping this for myself!

I can only imagine how incredibly frightening it is to see your child choking, happy to hear she’s feeling better!

With regards to the owlcare my husband and I are t-7 weeks until our first child arrives and I’d love to have the peace of mind it offers.

Great product! Having a baby this Spring and would love one!

  38. Dianna on February 3, 2016 at 3:09 am

My 2 month old is sleeping in a co-sleeper next to the bed at the moment, and honestly I have not even thought about when we are going to transition to the crib, since she hasn’t been trying to roll over yet. I had such a difficult time with my 3 year old, when we moved her to the crib, that I actually ended up laying my mattress on the floor right next to her. She now sleeps in my bed with me, while hubby sleeps on the couch. Since both girls will be sharing a room together, I am hoping that we can transition both at the same time so we can get our sleeping arrangements back to normal, especially since my husband and I have zero alone time together with the two kids now. This product definitely sounds like it would help with some of the anxiety of the big move. I’m glad that your little one is doing much better with the reflux! My first had problems with that as well, which was a big part of why I had so much anxiety about moving her to another room, so I totally understand the stress that goes along with that.

I would love to win! We’re thinking about baby two and this was something I worried about constantly with our little girl. If love peace of mind the next time around! So glad miss P is doing better!

Hi!! I just recently gave birth to my third child late January and have the worst anxiety about transitioning to the crib in a few months. I have used the baby sense in that past which often gave false alarms, which is terrifying in the middle of the night! My little one is dealing with some reflux as well and struggles with choking after and during feeding sessions. We also had a choking incident in the hospital where she couldn’t breathe and needed treatment to suction liquid from her lungs, which lead to more observation. Needless to say this would be amazing to win and make our life a bit more pleasant in the night hours of terror. Thanks for the chance to win such a great prize!
