Happy 3 months, Penelope! (+ an Owlet giveaway!)

Guess who is 3 months old? Thatโ€™s a quarter of a year! I canโ€™t even.

3 months 3

Miss P is still smiling like crazy, babbling and cooing to her heartโ€™s delight, and chewing on her hands like theyโ€™re a delectable treat. Iโ€™m convinced that sheโ€™s teething because she is always gnawing on her hands, but the ped said sheโ€™s still a little young to be teething. Either way, sheโ€™s growing like crazy.

3 months 2

We hit a major turning point with the reflux. A huge part of the puzzle was switching her to Elecare formula (as sad as I was to give up breastfeeding), and thickening it with brown rice cereal. At first, I couldnโ€™t help but think โ€œsheโ€™s way too little,โ€ but when she still wasnโ€™t gaining weight appropriately, I was willing to try whatever the ped suggested. For the first time EVER, she gained a pound in between weight checks! I was so, so thrilled. The Elecare formula is very thin and watery, so it was all coming back up (but she was no longer screaming or choking on it). A teaspoon of rice cereal has made the formula stay down, so sheโ€™s gaining weight now and HAPPY. I also think that like anything, time has been a huge factor. As her body as matured a little bit, itโ€™s been easier for her to eat and keep it down so, so much better.

3 months

Some of the things she loves this month:

Her Lamaze mermaid. She thinks chewing on her hair is awesome

Practicing her roll

Snuggles before nap time. Iโ€™ll lie with her on our bed until sheโ€™s calm and comfy before transferring her to the bassinet or crib

Hanging out with her big sis

Livi and p

โ€œThis Little Piggyโ€ and โ€œPat A Cake”

Bath time with Liv

Miss P is officially too big for the bassinet, and weโ€™re slowly transitioning her to the crib. Weโ€™re also going to ditch the swaddle since sheโ€™s thisclose to completely rolling over. Big changes ahead! I was horrified about having her sleep in another room, especially because of the choking episodes, but we got something that has given me peace of mind: the Owlet Baby Care Smart Sock.

Owlet

I had been looking at monitoring options online, and combed through so many reviews. I didnโ€™t want something that was notorious for false alarms, and also wanted something a little more dependable than strictly movement-sensored or audio based. While we have a video monitor, it doesnโ€™t paint a full picture of how the baby is doing, and I was worried that if she choked during the night, I wouldnโ€™t be able to hear it on the monitor with the sound turned out. The Owlet was everything we needed, and needless to say, I was thrilled and so thankful when they offered to send us one.

Owlet 2

What I love about the Owlet:

-The technology is at-home pulse oximetry monitoring for babies, which monitors heart rate and oxygen levels. This is the same technology they use at doctorโ€™s offices and hospitals, in a portable, soft little sock.

-You slip the sock on the babyโ€™s left foot, and the data is monitored and accessible through your smart phone and through a base station in another room. We have the pod set up on my nightstand, which illuminates in green. If thereโ€™s ever a problem, an alarm will sound and the base station will turn red. I love that I can check and see how sheโ€™s doing during nap time and view her stats for peace of mind. The base is independent of wifi, so if your phone dies, you can count on it to alert you if your babyโ€™s rate dips too low, rises too high, or oxygen levels dip below a preset threshold.

You can check out a video of Owlet Baby Care in action here.

Owlet 3

-As you guys know, we had some pretty horrific choking incidents with the reflux. Since then, itโ€™s been my greatest fear that P will choke during the night. This is why sheโ€™s been in the bassinet, right next to me, for so long. Now I feel like we can transition her to another room, without my anxiety driving me up the wall.

Iโ€™ve been so thankful and thrilled with the technology that I reached out to my friends at Owlet to see if theyโ€™d mind giving one away to a lucky reader. They said yes! ๐Ÿ™‚

Our 6 week old also suffers from reflux just like baby P. I completely understand your fear of her choking during the night. We also keep our daughter right next to me in a bassinet. I have been dreading the day she outgrows it and has to move to her crib in a separate room. Every little noise freaks me out. This would give me more peace of mind.

I am just exiting my first trimester with my second. One of my conditions to having another was getting a breathing / heart rate monitor. I had a lot of sleepless nights and anxiety filled days with my first worrying about him not breathing. So a monitor like this is mandatory for me. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

I’m due the beginning of April (a little more than 9 weeks to go!) and would love this for our little guy. As a first time mom I think this would definitely help me sleep while he’s sleeping rather than watching him like a hawk :). I followed you on insta.

I’d love this for myself to use for baby #2 when the times comes. We had horrible reflux with our first, so I can totally relate. I was a nervous wreck!

  15. Paola on February 3, 2016 at 7:11 am

So glad to hear Penelope is doing much better!
I am going to be 40 weeks on Friday expecting my first babe. Still, no chance of this thing coming out any time soon. It’s a surprise, so we don’t know yet if it’ll be a boy or a girl.
I’ve heard about Owlet before and am very intrigued by their monitoring system. Would love to give it a try! I’m sure it’ll bring a lot of piece of mind as first-time parents.

I would love one of these. I have a 6 week old with minor reflux (not as bad of choking as your Ms P) and have been holding off on moving her into her room for the same reasons.

  19. Amanda W on February 3, 2016 at 7:17 am

I am expecting a boy in May so I would keep it.

  20. Jessica on February 3, 2016 at 7:24 am

I’m six months pregnant with our first and a monitor like this is at the top of my list to buy. I would love some added peace of mind when we bring her home!

I am a first time mom to a baby girl who will be four months next week. I still haven’t moved her to her own bedroom because I’m way too nervous! I would keep the Owlet and use it for peace of mind when we make the transition to her crib!

I’d probably give this to my cousin-in-law who is due in May!

We are trying for baby #3 and I know I always get so anxious when I move them to their own room, and that’s without the scares that you’ve had! Thinking good thoughts for a smooth transition for you!

  31. Lindsay on February 3, 2016 at 8:13 am

I would love one for myself! I use the angelcare but has lots of false alarms!

I am expecting my 3rd and would love this for peace of mind!! My husband has acid reflux/GERD and while my first two haven’t had any issues I’m scared this one might be the one who does. Glad you can sleep well, now!

  45. Kelsey on February 3, 2016 at 9:32 am

I am expecting a little girl in April and have been interested in getting one of these! Would love to win it.

  46. Katie on February 3, 2016 at 9:45 am

This sounds like it’s really great to provide peace of mind especially with Penelope’s reflux. I’m curious though – would you have considered spending the money on it for Liv who did not have the same issues? I’m due with #2 in about a month (!!) and have gone back and forth on getting a monitor like this. I wonder if it would help ease or ramp up my anxiety (like if I would stare at it like a maniac or something).

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2016 at 12:14 pm

totally. with liv, i still had extreme anxiety when she went to sleep in the nursery, and she was only like 20 feet away. when the owlet is on, i feel like i can sleep soundly because the alarm will sound (and it’s loud) if anything goes awry

      • Katie on February 3, 2016 at 5:14 pm

Thanks! I appreciate the response. I still pop in to check that my 2-year-old is still breathing soooo maybe it would be helpful haha!

  47. Haily on February 3, 2016 at 9:50 am

I am 6 months pregnant and have had my eye on this for baby number 2. I remember being paranoid and staring at my sleeping 1 week old daughter’s nostrils being CONVINCED there was no way that she was getting enough oxygen. Maybe this thing would help me get some sleep this time around!

  48. Rachel F. Johnson on February 3, 2016 at 9:54 am

This is awesome! My husband and I recently had a MC, but when I was pregnant, something like this was high on my list! We’re TTC now and hopefully could use this sometime in the next year

  49. Anne on February 3, 2016 at 9:58 am

I saw that the other day and told my husband when we get pregnant we are getting one! $250 “life insurance” for your baby? Priceless!

  50. Sarah on February 3, 2016 at 9:58 am

I’d give it a friend whose baby is having similar troubles.
