Happy 3 months, Penelope! (+ an Owlet giveaway!)

Guess who is 3 months old? Thatโ€™s a quarter of a year! I canโ€™t even.

3 months 3

Miss P is still smiling like crazy, babbling and cooing to her heartโ€™s delight, and chewing on her hands like theyโ€™re a delectable treat. Iโ€™m convinced that sheโ€™s teething because she is always gnawing on her hands, but the ped said sheโ€™s still a little young to be teething. Either way, sheโ€™s growing like crazy.

3 months 2

We hit a major turning point with the reflux. A huge part of the puzzle was switching her to Elecare formula (as sad as I was to give up breastfeeding), and thickening it with brown rice cereal. At first, I couldnโ€™t help but think โ€œsheโ€™s way too little,โ€ but when she still wasnโ€™t gaining weight appropriately, I was willing to try whatever the ped suggested. For the first time EVER, she gained a pound in between weight checks! I was so, so thrilled. The Elecare formula is very thin and watery, so it was all coming back up (but she was no longer screaming or choking on it). A teaspoon of rice cereal has made the formula stay down, so sheโ€™s gaining weight now and HAPPY. I also think that like anything, time has been a huge factor. As her body as matured a little bit, itโ€™s been easier for her to eat and keep it down so, so much better.

3 months

Some of the things she loves this month:

Her Lamaze mermaid. She thinks chewing on her hair is awesome

Practicing her roll

Snuggles before nap time. Iโ€™ll lie with her on our bed until sheโ€™s calm and comfy before transferring her to the bassinet or crib

Hanging out with her big sis

Livi and p

โ€œThis Little Piggyโ€ and โ€œPat A Cake”

Bath time with Liv

Miss P is officially too big for the bassinet, and weโ€™re slowly transitioning her to the crib. Weโ€™re also going to ditch the swaddle since sheโ€™s thisclose to completely rolling over. Big changes ahead! I was horrified about having her sleep in another room, especially because of the choking episodes, but we got something that has given me peace of mind: the Owlet Baby Care Smart Sock.

Owlet

I had been looking at monitoring options online, and combed through so many reviews. I didnโ€™t want something that was notorious for false alarms, and also wanted something a little more dependable than strictly movement-sensored or audio based. While we have a video monitor, it doesnโ€™t paint a full picture of how the baby is doing, and I was worried that if she choked during the night, I wouldnโ€™t be able to hear it on the monitor with the sound turned out. The Owlet was everything we needed, and needless to say, I was thrilled and so thankful when they offered to send us one.

Owlet 2

What I love about the Owlet:

-The technology is at-home pulse oximetry monitoring for babies, which monitors heart rate and oxygen levels. This is the same technology they use at doctorโ€™s offices and hospitals, in a portable, soft little sock.

-You slip the sock on the babyโ€™s left foot, and the data is monitored and accessible through your smart phone and through a base station in another room. We have the pod set up on my nightstand, which illuminates in green. If thereโ€™s ever a problem, an alarm will sound and the base station will turn red. I love that I can check and see how sheโ€™s doing during nap time and view her stats for peace of mind. The base is independent of wifi, so if your phone dies, you can count on it to alert you if your babyโ€™s rate dips too low, rises too high, or oxygen levels dip below a preset threshold.

You can check out a video of Owlet Baby Care in action here.

Owlet 3

-As you guys know, we had some pretty horrific choking incidents with the reflux. Since then, itโ€™s been my greatest fear that P will choke during the night. This is why sheโ€™s been in the bassinet, right next to me, for so long. Now I feel like we can transition her to another room, without my anxiety driving me up the wall.

Iโ€™ve been so thankful and thrilled with the technology that I reached out to my friends at Owlet to see if theyโ€™d mind giving one away to a lucky reader. They said yes! ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a 9 week old baby girl and she is still in the bassinet next to our bed so I can totally relate. My husband has been bugging me to transition her to the crib but it makes me nervous! It was actually my husband who brought my attention to the Owlet sock but when I checked it out I was scared off by the price tag. I would keep the Owlet for myself and start the transition to the crib as soon as the sock was on ๐Ÿ™‚ We have a video monitor but you can’t really see her breathing too clearly on there and being the worry wart I am, it’s not enough ๐Ÿ™‚ any tips on transitioning to the crib from the bassinet?

I just had twins that came 3 months early and are in the NICU. They will be coming home at the end of the month and the owlet sounds perfect for helping to ease my nerves about anything happening (though I’ll need 2 owlets)!

Little one hasn’t been in her crib at all because of my same fears. She’s almost a year and it’s time for her to be in her own space to spread out. Plus, Mommy and Daddy want to start on making a sibling. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would definitely love this. We are expecting our 2nd in May and I remember that feeling of wanting to check on our first every minute! Heck I still check on him multiple times a night and he’s 3.5!

Wow, this would give me such peace of mind. Thanks for letting me know about it!

I would love to give this to my brother and sister in law. My niece Pola will be 3 months old in a couple of weeks and they don’t have any baby monitors (nor the means to buy such a high tech one as this). Pola is the first grandchild in the family. We are so in love with her and want to make sure she is safe and healthy all the time!

I have a nine month old who is still in the pack and play right next to our bed. He has Down syndrome, he went into the NICU as soon as he was born because of low oxygen saturation levels, and between all that and his reflux I just cannot move him out of our room. I would love to try this out and see if it would make my husband and me feel comfortable enough to start to transition him to his own room – we worked so hard to decorate it, it’s a shame to only use it for diaper changes ;)!

My baby is almost three months, too. I’d love an Owlet sock. That sounds wonderful…perfect for a nervous parent like me.

I have a two month old and we are in the process of transitioning her to her crib and so many times I catch myself going to check on her because of every noise and movement. What an amazing product!

I have an almost 7 week old with reflux. This would be SO helpful! She is still in a bassinet, but grunts a lot at night so I would love to transition her to her crib – but I’m nervous too.

I’m curious – why does the sock go on the left foot? Just wondering if there is science behind that or if you are just supposed to put it on the same foot all the time and you chose the left foot.

I’m due in 2 months exactly with baby boy number 2, so this is perfect timing! He’ll be sleeping in the same room as my very light sleeper, so I know checking on him all the time will be risky if I want to keep number one asleep as well haha!

We are due at the end of the month with our second child and I’m terrified of eventually putting him in his own room since his sister had so many reflux issues too so having this would be such a gift to our family!

I am expecting my third child and would love having this! We had to bring home a pulse oximeter from the hospital for one of our twins and it was constantly going off for no reason and caused so much unnecessary anxiety! This looks awesome.

I am expecting my first child in 5 months and I’m trying to be as prepared as possible. As a first time parent I think this would be amazing just to know your little one is okay at all times!

I’m expecting baby #2 soon. With a bedroom a story away from us, this sensor would give me peace of mind.

  42. Sarah Gliege on February 3, 2016 at 5:47 pm

I am expecting our second little one at the end of March. Our daughter is five now, but when she was an infant, I had to sleep right next to her at all times due to reflux issues and my safety concerns.

I never sleep away from her until 10 months and held her for all her naps. It was exhausting! Not feasible this time.

An Owlet could be the solution to all my fears this time around!

Glad you and P are finding some type of relief! You deserve it!

  43. Andrea on February 3, 2016 at 5:56 pm

We are hoping to be expecting soon! I’m an ER nurse and already have anxiety about all the “what if’s”. I think it just becomes second nature in my line of work and can’t imagine how it will multiply with motherhood, lol! The owlet sounds great, reliable medical equipment that is friendly for anyone to use (and cute). I think it’d be awesome to have one! So glad to hear baby P is doing better!
