Hiatus + Yoga Lovin’

Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday ๐Ÿ˜€ Hope youโ€™re having a good morning.

Hiatus

Yaโ€™ll know this already if youโ€™re a twitter friend, and itโ€™s a giant bummer, but Iโ€™m going to take two full weeks off from cardio and leg work. My knee is still yelling at me and after a pep talk with two trainers I love and respect, we decided that this is what I need to do.

The funny thing is, at Wizzle the other night, I saw another V-town trainer (we only have a handful of trainers here and all know each other) in front of me in line. In his cart, he had frosted mini wheats, Pringles, parm cheese in a container, SODA, and other processed and junky goodies. Unintentionally, in my mind I judged a littleโ€ฆ I thought to myself โ€œHow can you eat that stuff and then try to teach your clients to eat well and live healthy lives?โ€

When in reality, Iโ€™m kind of doing the same thing.

If one of my clients came up to me and said their knee was bothering them after a half marathon, the first thing I would say is: two weeks of nothing. Take this time off to let your body heal, focus on your eats and come back in full swing.

Well, I havenโ€™t done that that.

I took it โ€œeasyโ€ the week after the half marathon, taught Zumba last week, did full cardio on top of weights, now my knee hates me slightly more than it did last week. I turned a one-week injury into a two-week injury, which will now become a month injury as I let myself heal.

The reality check was this morning, when Ron asked me if I wanted to turn this two-week injury into a *life* injury. You donโ€™t mess around with your knees, and once you have knee probs, they can stick with you for the long haul. He said, and I quote, โ€œDude, your knee is sending a signal to your brain that something isnโ€™t right. You can either keep pushing along and make it worse or rest for two weeks and be able to get back into your routine.โ€

Heโ€™s right. I knew this all along and itโ€™s time for me to actually *do it*. Iโ€™m going to miss Zumba, Iโ€™m sad that I canโ€™t run the 10k this weekend, and I feel kind of cranky and like a lard already. Itโ€™s time for me to stop thinking Iโ€™m a superhero and let my body do itโ€™s thang. At least I got in some awesome power yoga classes this weekend ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yoga Lovin

As yaโ€™ll know, I love me some yoga. It helps to quiet my frantic mind, gives me a killer workout and helps me tone muscles that Iโ€™ve never seen before. When Iโ€™m not injured, you can find me in crow poseโ€ฆ

crow

Or dancer

yogaaaaa

And my downward facing fun children ๐Ÿ˜€

yoga

One of my favorite ways to get some yoga in my life since we donโ€™t have a yoga studio here, is to do podcasts from YogaDownload.com. Theyโ€™re perfect for traveling and Iโ€™ve done podcasts in Cali, Gatlinburg, Atlanta and Orlando to sneak in quick and effective workouts ๐Ÿ™‚

I usually roll with the intense power yoga classes (Power Yoga #3 and #4 are my favorites), but will take this hiatus as a chance to try meditative and restorative classes.

Iโ€™ve always purchased the yoga podcasts from YogaDownload.com with my own money, and have written about them quite a few times. There are SO many types of podcasts to choose from, printable pose guides (so you can know in advance what the class will consist of) and they now have video podcasts as well.

Well the lovely (and generous) friends at YogaDownload.com have been so kind to offer:

ALL Fitnessistas a 30% off discount on their purchases at YogaDownload.com for the rest of March– all you have to do is enter the coupon code โ€œFitnessistaโ€ at checkout. This code can be used as many times as you like! SAWEET!!!!

One very lucky Fitnessista will get a year unlimited subscription to YogaDownload.com. As many yoga downloads as you like, for an entire year, for free. How amazing is that?!?

To enter for the year subscription, all you have to do is leave a comment with what your favorite yoga pose is. Winner will be chosen tonight at midnight via pilot random number generator.

Namaste,

Gina

My favorite is child’s pose during a really hard and sweaty class ๐Ÿ™‚

    Love yogadownload.com!!

  2. sarah on March 23, 2010 at 9:12 am

wow, what a great giveaway! my favorite pose is definitely scorpion! i love all the inversion poses, in general.

  3. Elizabeth on March 23, 2010 at 9:13 am

Hope your knee feels better soon Gina! I’m glad you’re listening to your body and resting. Your body will definitely appreciate it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never commented before but have to since Yoga is my absolute favorite form of exercise. My favorite pose is the all time classic downward facing dog. This is the best stretch, such a release, and it feels amazing while taking deep breaths.

  4. Ana (AnActive Adventure) on March 23, 2010 at 9:13 am

Taking time off of something you love to sucks!!! But I have to agree that if you don’t take that time off your injury could get worse and we don’t want that! Rest up that knee girlie, two weeks are going to fly by in no time. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. rachael on March 23, 2010 at 9:13 am

What a great giveaway! I hope your knee feels better soon, injuries are the worst! I don’t know if I can choose one favorite pose my body wants different things on different days. When I started yoga I hated Pavritta Trikonasana but with time it came to be one of my favorites. I also love kurmasana, especially after a super sweaty class.

  6. liz on March 23, 2010 at 9:16 am

It’s so much easier to tell other people to take time off than to do it yourself, especially when you are used to a certain level of exercise! I can’t run for 2 months because of a stress fracture and it has been a difficult adjustment (mentally) to change up my whole routine. I might even have to give up biking. But like you said it’s better to take 2 weeks off than to have a lifetime problem. 2 weeks will go by before you know it!

I’m pretty new to yoga – I have only done a few classes and videos – but I enjoy warrior pose.

Thanks for the contest, have a great day!

  7. Mellissa on March 23, 2010 at 9:16 am

My favorite pose is now crow, because I can finally do it and it makes me feel so strong!

  8. Nikki on March 23, 2010 at 9:16 am

What a generous giveaway from yogadownloads! I’m a yoga newbie, and the extent of my knowledge is what WiiFit teaches me ๐Ÿ™‚ However, I would love to win this so that I can start getting my strength back after my back surgery that I had last year!

  9. katey on March 23, 2010 at 9:16 am

wow!!! i am sure the 2 week hiatus will be exactly what your body needs. I would say my fav. is standing head to knee pose (a bikram pose). It’s SO hard! Especially with sweaty hands and legs! But, I have been able to master it (not always) and its a fab stretch!

  10. Shawna on March 23, 2010 at 9:17 am

    First off enjoy your rest. I know it’s hard but it will be worth it in the long run! {{ hugs }}

I think my fave pose would have to be the Pigeon. I have problems with my hips and this pose does the trick, gives me a nice good stretch!

    Awesome giveaway!

  11. Emily on March 23, 2010 at 9:18 am

I love yoga. I think it is one of the most amazing ways to unwind, stretch out the body and get stronger. Best of all worlds! I love pretty much any balancing pose, because they really challenge my mind and body.

  12. Suzanne on March 23, 2010 at 9:19 am

I love pigeon. My hips are typically really tight from running, and this pose always helps to loosen them up!

  13. Lauren on March 23, 2010 at 9:19 am

Sorry about your knee, I hope it starts to feel better soon!

I just started using yogadownload.com, love it!
    My favorite pose is triangle.

  14. Tina on March 23, 2010 at 9:21 am

Try and take this time away from cardio as an opportunity to rejuvenate your mind and body and you will come back stronger than ever!

I love pigeon – hurts so good on the hips! and Dancer – love trying to get my foot to the highest point possible! Great Giveaway! I love yogadownload!

  15. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on March 23, 2010 at 9:21 am

My favorite is tree pose! Love it ๐Ÿ˜€

  16. bonnie on March 23, 2010 at 9:22 am

I loooooove pigeon! After all my cardio and running, nothing feels better than the deep stretch and hip opening of pigeon! Makes me feel like I can float afterwards =) love power yoga – glad you’re digging it!

  17. hannah on March 23, 2010 at 9:22 am

Mine is pigeon for those sore hips. Great giveaway!

  18. Bethany (Not Unless I'm Being Chased) on March 23, 2010 at 9:23 am

Take care of yourself! Your health is SO much more important than risking it all for two weeks of sub-par workouts (because you know working through that pain wouldn’t produce quality exercise!).
My favorite pose is definitely downward facing dog. I like it because a little while after starting yoga, I noticed one of our dogs (monsters) stretching and I could totally see why they call it that! After that, every time I’m in down dog, at least one of our two monsters comes over and stretches it with me. I should get it on video sometime! ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Holly on March 23, 2010 at 9:25 am

I am new to yoga and have really only done it on the WII Fit, but I have enjoyed it.

I think my favorite pose so far is the tree pose.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  20. maxballard on March 23, 2010 at 9:26 am

I’m delurking ’cause I love yoga. Your pink yoga mat is divine – where’d you get it?

I do like warrior one, but my current fav pose is the cow-face fold to stretch my pirifomis after a long run.

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2010 at 9:32 am

thanks for de-lurking ๐Ÿ˜€ hope to see you around more!
      it’s from target (aka targizzle)

  21. Tiffany on March 23, 2010 at 9:26 am

thats a wicked dancer pose! you’re rockin it! sorry to hear about your knees, but so glad you’re taking 2 weeks off to HEAL. your body will bounce back 150% afterwards and you’ll feel amazing!

pigeon is my favorite pose! and thank you for posting the other day about what pigeon pose is REALLY supposed to be like – i’ve been doing it wrong too! my hip flexors thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Molly @fuelherup on March 23, 2010 at 9:27 am

    My favorite pose is headstand!

I really recommend pool running – basically no impact on your knees and that way you can still get a little cardio in. On my team, whenever people have bad pain or even stress fractures, they go to the pool to run.

  23. Sara on March 23, 2010 at 9:29 am

Very good idea to follow your own advice ๐Ÿ™‚ so much better to take two weeks off then be REALLY injured.

  24. Jessie on March 23, 2010 at 9:31 am

I am a newbie to yoga so I have not tried too many poses. So far my favorites are the warrior poses, there is something about them that makes me feel strong!

  25. Danielle on March 23, 2010 at 9:31 am

My favorite is pigeon pose! I had been doing it wrong until I went to a new (new to me) yoga studio in DC and the instructor made a really simple adjustment that opened up a whole new world of pain/stretch/good feelings for me.

  26. Kate on March 23, 2010 at 9:32 am

I think my favorite is pigeon but now thanks to you, I know I wasn’t doing it the right way. I tried to put my leg parallel to the mat last night and it wouldn’t stay. Something to work on I suppose. Nothing feels better then pigeon after I get off of the treadmill!

  27. Carrie on March 23, 2010 at 9:33 am

I love warrior pose (1 & 2), it makes me feel strong!

  28. Kim on March 23, 2010 at 9:35 am

I’m training for a marathon and last week my foot randomly started really hurting. I was determined to just run through it but my husband called me out on it and made me take 2 days off just to rest it and ice it. I cried a lot of tears and fought him on it big time… but 3 days later was able to run again, pain free. I know my recuperating time was way less than yours, but all that to say, I understand how hard of a decision it is to take the time off! Stay with it! It really will be good for you!

  29. Melissa on March 23, 2010 at 9:35 am

I’m still a beginner so child’s pose is my fav right now haha ๐Ÿ™‚ I can’t wait to use this coupon code!!! I just bought my first download off their website a few weeks ago. Definitely a good reason to go buy more.

And I’m sorry about your knee but two weeks will fly and you’ll be back before you know it

  30. Bella (Stilettos on the Streetcar) on March 23, 2010 at 9:35 am

I’m a yoga newbie who just started practicing in January, so I’m still figuring out what I like. My favourite positions so far are Pigeon because my IT band needs it and Goddess because I could stay in that pose forever.

  31. Tiffany B on March 23, 2010 at 9:35 am

My favorite pose is pigeon. It feels so good on my hips.

  32. Kelly on March 23, 2010 at 9:36 am

Good call taking two weeks off, I’m thinking the same thing might be in my future.

  33. Tammy on March 23, 2010 at 9:38 am

Hmmm, I’m quite a fan of Shevasana myself!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Sounds a little wimpy, but I used to struggle with lying still for so long – it seemed like such a waste of time. Now I’m finally at a point where I can appreciate it and while my mind still races a little more than it should, I’m getting there . . .

  34. Christina on March 23, 2010 at 9:39 am

Bow pose is my favorite! It would be a-maz-ing to win a year of free downloads.

  35. Kat on March 23, 2010 at 9:39 am

Great giveaway! My favorite pose is the simple tree pose; I like that it makes me feel grounded.

  36. Jannifer on March 23, 2010 at 9:40 am

    Love tree pose and pigeon!

  37. Amy on March 23, 2010 at 9:40 am

child pose. maybe a cop-out answer? but, man, i love child pose. and i love yogadownload! i listen to their podcasts all the time!

  38. Leianna on March 23, 2010 at 9:40 am

My husband and I recently started doing yogadownload podcast together and we love downward dog, it was hard at first but after a week of doing it we feel great!

  39. beth on March 23, 2010 at 9:41 am

Aaah, I miss yoga — haven’t done it for ages since I went freelance and lost access to the fabulous lunchtime yoga class right in my office building! I’ve been doing 5 Sun Salutations every morning since January (new year’s resolution!), but I’d have to say my favorite pose is probably one of the warriors.

  40. Carrie on March 23, 2010 at 9:43 am

Oooh – I like the basics – Downward Facing Dog!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Amy on March 23, 2010 at 9:45 am

I am a newbie to yoga but a runner so child’s pose feels best ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. Kristi on March 23, 2010 at 9:45 am

Yoga is all about savasana. Everything else is just a lead-in to enjoying a few minutes of utter nothingness.

  43. Natalie on March 23, 2010 at 9:46 am

Glad to hear you are taking some time off. I recently hurt my back, didn’t take it easy and am now out for a couple of months. I cannot do yoga or lift weights but only walk, maybe the elliptical. It was hard to accept this but we really need to listen to our bodies when they are saying “Stop, take a break!” It took a proverbial slap to the face to see the light.
Great giveaway–my favorite pose is savasana–total relaxation!

  44. Jocelyn on March 23, 2010 at 9:46 am

childs pose or down dog! ๐Ÿ™‚

  45. Heather (Where's the Beach) on March 23, 2010 at 9:46 am

It’s always so hard to take our own advice isn’t it? Hopefully the hiatus will get you back on the up and up!

  46. Kelli on March 23, 2010 at 9:46 am

Gina I’m so glad you are going to rest and HEAL that pesky knee!

I would have to choose child’s pose, it just feels so good!
I checked out Yogadownload once when you linked it from a post and have been hooked since!

  47. Katie on March 23, 2010 at 9:48 am

don’t have a favorite pose – in fact, i’ve never done yoga before but am really interested in getting started and this would be a great place!

  48. AB on March 23, 2010 at 9:48 am

Cool contest! I adore chakra-asana (wheel pose). It makes my spine feel so strong and lengthened. It’s the perfect remedy to a long day of desk work. Ahh…

  49. Jess @ Truly,Into.Fitness on March 23, 2010 at 9:48 am

    I LOVE yoga download!
My favorite pose is the downward dog. Seriously so relaxing.

  50. Marissa on March 23, 2010 at 9:50 am

I love child’s pose. I just relax all my muscles…it’s about the only time I can get my mind to slow down.
