Hobby of necessity (giveaway)

*This giveaway has ended as of 12/16 midnight. Stay tuned for more giveaways soon! Winner’s info at the bottom of this post, along with the details on the lotion bar I’m so obsessed with 🙂 Thank you so much to everyone for entering!********************************************************************

For me, there are two types of hobbies:

1.) the kind you really, really love and

2.) the necessary ones.

When I was younger, I decided I was going to knit. Some of my friends could knit, I thought it was cool and decided to give it a whirl. It lasted about 4 seconds. I have the patience of Bella waiting for chicken and knitting wasn’t something I needed a reason to do. It’s hot in Tucson and my beanies and scarves get worn about twice a year.

The hobbies I really enjoy: teaching fitness, Zumba, cooking, reading, dance, etc

Necessary hobbies: photography and scrapbooking

Photography is a necessary hobby for the blog… I don’t really like it, or know what the heck I’m doing. I take a picture in “P” mode, auto-adjust the colors if it looks weird, and post. Some people get warm and fuzzy talking about aperture and shutter speed, and alas, I am not one of them. Scrapbooking has become another necessary hobby since the Pilot has been deployed 3 times and we always make scrapbook pages, and since we have a little one on the way, I’ve taken to online scrapbooking. The day we got our maternity photos back, I made photo books for madre, nana and baby, and had them shipped out. Was it fun? Not at all. Am I glad I did it? 100%.

I could see the same thing happening with the lotion bars I was trying to figure out how to make.

lotion bar

I had a sliver left, needed to replenish the stash, and couldn’t get a hold of the amazing woman who makes the lotions and soaps. So, I headed to the health food store for ingredients…. and then she called me back. Thank goodness making lotion bars didn’t have to become a necessary hobby 😉

I ordered an extra one for a lucky blog friend <3

To make the giveaway a little sweeter, I’d also like to share my #1 pregnancy must-have with the winner:

snoogle (2)

A snoogle!

The bonus about this giveaway is that you don’t have to be expecting a little one to enjoy. Everyone could use a rich, buttery, lotion bar made with real ingredients and the comfiest body pillow ever invented.

Congratulations to the winner!

For those of you who were curious about the lotion, I talked to the woman who makes them today to make sure it was cool to share her info, since she doesn’t have an Etsy shop or anything like that. She makes AMAZING products (lotions and soaps) and my fave is the bitter almond lotion bar. You break off a piece, heat it up with your hands and rub it on 🙂

Here’s her email address if you’d like to order something from her:

bbilleaudeau@vtc.net

Her name is Giselle and she can ship in the US, in the winter, as the bars will melt in the summer heat.

My hobbies are running, reading for fun, and watching awesome TV. I also am really enjoying exploring the new city I just moved to. I’m single so a body pillow would be a great guy replacement 😉

  3. Jenny on December 16, 2011 at 1:22 pm

My favorite hobby is baking, and exercising is a necessary hobby– not only to counteract the baked goods, but to keep me mentally and physically healthy.

  4. Candice @ Sailing on Paper on December 16, 2011 at 1:23 pm

My favorite hobby is actually knitting! It’s somewhat hard to get the hang of–but totally worth it once you can start making cute things.

  5. Jillian on December 16, 2011 at 1:25 pm

My favourite fun hobby is youtube vlogging about mommy stuff! Necessary hobby is grocery shopping, it used to be a fun one but has become more of a challenge since having my 2nd baby! I have 2 girls, 20 months and 2 months 🙂 Busy, busy!

  6. Kattie B on December 16, 2011 at 1:36 pm

This would be perfect for my BFF who is expecting in May. My favorite hobby is scrapbooking…love it and have considered it as a career in the future.

  7. Jamie on December 16, 2011 at 1:45 pm

My favorite fun hobby is hot yoga. It’s kind of a love hate relationship. I hate going when I’ve been out for a while, but I love the clear mindedness afterwards.
I am due 1.23.12 and can’t wait to meet my little one. There has been no hot yoga for me since May, but I have been staying active and am feeling really great this time around.
It’s been great being able to read along with your pregnancy journey. Very inspiring how you have kept up with your workouts, but listened to your body and rested when necessary. Hard to find balance in these things, but great to know others are going through it too.

Fave hobbies: cooking, shopping [for anything!], scrapbooking, and working out. Necessary hobbies: cleaning and organizing, planning lessons for my students, and checking emails.

  9. Gina (Yogattude) on December 16, 2011 at 1:48 pm

Favorite hobbies: yoga, hiking, trying new restaurants and cooking/baking. I love the idea of being a great photographer (and blogger), but I never seem to prioritize time to play and learn my camera settings and/or write. My sister is due March 3 and I’d totally give her the pillow, she’d LOVE it!

  10. Katie on December 16, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I have lots of hobbies! Reading food blogs, reading books on my kindle, yoga, not so much running since it’s cold and I’m 4 months pregnant…..but they’re all necessary AND fun! 🙂

  11. Sam on December 16, 2011 at 1:50 pm

My favorite hobby is hanging out with my boyfriend of 5 years. 🙂 We can have fun no matter where we are or what we do. Other than that, I love being outdoors, watching TV, reading blogs and going on Pinterest <—-addict. AND….without a doubt, my necessary hobby is schoolwork/studying (but it doesn't bother me that much because I'm a school-loving nerd). 🙂

  12. Elizabeth P. on December 16, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I would say doing my hair is a hobby of necessity… I like getting done up but I would be so happy if I never had to blow-dry my hair every again!

  13. Becky on December 16, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I love cardio, dance, and zumba classes…they are my fun hobbies. However, abs exercises are my necessary hobby:)

  14. Sarah on December 16, 2011 at 1:59 pm

My favorite hobby by far is cycling. I teach RPM cycle (by Les Mills) and LOVE it! It’s how I met my husband years ago (he teaches too) and my passion!! We have two rugrats – a 7-year-old and a new little baby who just turned 6 months! I cycled throughout my entire pregnancy (all the way until the night before I gave birth – I could barely reach the handle bars anymore – it was cycling over a basketball!) and now if my son gets fussy, I just have to put on cycle music and he totally mellows out! I bet your little girl will be the same with all your Zumba music! 🙂

  15. Jillian on December 16, 2011 at 2:06 pm

It makes for nice relaxing time before the baby comes. Oh, and I am due Dec. 31st. So almost done with the pregnancy, but would still love love the snoogle…I have a feeling it is something I could use post pregnancy and then in my next!

    Swimming, reading, and cooking!

  27. Dee on December 16, 2011 at 2:41 pm

My favorite hobby has to be running, and out of necessity, I collect holiday and birthday cards all year round and have a stash to go to when an event comes up. Not sure that’s actually a hobby. It was a necessity, because too often I’d forget the card and not have time to stop and get one. Or else, I wouldn’t find something I liked. So I always browse cards, and snatch up good ones I come across.

I have no due date, or any kids, but I am actively trying to change that! 🙂 So your pregnancy must-haves will hopefully come in handy!

  28. Lori on December 16, 2011 at 2:42 pm

  31. Zinta on December 16, 2011 at 2:48 pm

I’ve been reading blogs for about a year now, but this is the first time I have ever posted! I read your posts daily, and have been especially interested since you guys have decided to have a baby! I have a 19 month daughter and I am 18 weeks with our second. My husband is a cruise ship officer, so he’s gone for three moaths at a time. This is the first time he’s taken a contract since our daughter was born (I’m Canadian so I had a year maternity leave) and I confess, I’m overwhelmed. Running after a toddler and working full time and growing a new baby doesn’t leave much time for my fun AND necessary hobby – Bikrams. Bikrams is the only thing that makes me decompress, so while I sometimes dread going, I am always so happy I have made the effort. No bikrams also means my hips and back are really getting sore! I borrowed my sister in law’s snoogle during my first pregnancy, but as she is also pregnant now, I sure could use one. And when you posted about that body bar, my dry and stretched skin gave a big sigh of envy…

  32. Dana on December 16, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I love to bake for friends. I love to read. I like to bike ride. I dont really like to clean but ill just call that my necessary hobby!

I also out of necessity like to make cheap crafty gifts for holidays and birthdays but wish I could afford to buy people nice things because I love to give.

Hobby of necessity: cooking. Hobby of fun: reading kicky little blogs like yours! My sweet baby girl is 3 months old today! One of our body pillows accidentally got thrown away by the hospital staff when she was born, so a Snoogle would fill a snuggly hole in my life (twss)!
