“Let’s Go Out to Breakfast”

Hi friends! How’s your day been? <3

I’m a late blogger tonight- it was a crazy day! The kind where on my only 30 minute break, instead of writing a quick blog post, I needed to close my eyes for a second in silence haha.

Thank you so much for your sweet comments about having a wait date– fingers crossed! Like I said, I just want to be with my hubby. I really like him 🙂

In my last post, I also mentioned that my eats have been a little lackluster lately

Figured out why:

tostada

juice2

good eggs

salad4 soup

egg

Many of the things I’ve eaten this past week have been made by total strangers. Just in this past week alone, I’ve had Blanco taqueria, Chipotle, Sweet Tomatoes, Good Egg, Eclectic Cafe, juice from Whole Foods and am going out with friends tomorrow night.

What’s happened to me?!

green-monster Source

I’ve turned into a RESTUARANT MONSTER!!!

When we lived in Valdosta, we went out to eat about once a week. I made dinner at home (for two people.. one of whom eats like a family of four), and the meals we enjoyed in V-town were very expensive (100+ for both of us) so it was a special treat. In Tucson, I’m surrounded by amazing restaurants (Mexican food!!!!), have been so so busy (which is a lame excuse) and going out to eat is a very social thing for my family and friends. Whenever I talk to family, which is quite a few times a day, our conversation ends with saying “let’s go to breakfast”… and I love our breakfasts 😀

I have to give myself props for knowing how to navigate menus like a pro. Whatever I order is totally healthy and I always feel good (and happy!!!) after I eat. For cost and excitement purposes, I’m going to make a conscious effort to get back to my roots, plan out my eats for this next week, and get my booty back in the kitchen.

Amen.

(Quite a few bloggers have been focusing on eating at home more recently, so I’m excited to use them as inspiration!)

Since it’s Fashion Friday, I thought I’d ask ya what you think about doing my fashion-y posts more in this format:

image

(Shirtdress, hawt heels, rose ring, clutch)

Let me know what you think, and for next week’s I’ll have a post collage of some of my favorite spring outfits 🙂

I’m off to visit Viesa and her new family since they’re in town for the weekend, and then call it a night!
xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: How often do you go out to eat?? Are you trying to make a conscious effort to eat at home more often, too?

I love eating out, but after a long period of eating almost every single meal out I miss my homecooked and healthy meals. Have a great weekend!

  2. Jill on February 18, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I’ve really been trying to eat more at home and cut out the stuff made by strangers. I’ve never really been the type to go out to eat a lot, but I’m making more of an effort to make the food I eat from scratch. More whole foods and less junk.

  3. Carrie on February 18, 2011 at 11:36 pm

I try to go out to eat once a week or less. We’re the same way as you in that we almost always spend close to a 100 bucks. For one meal? Are you kidding me? Hahaha. However, unlike you, I eat what looks good, not what looks healthy. So to be kind to my wallet and my waistline, I try to limit it.

  4. Namaste Gurl on February 18, 2011 at 11:37 pm

I feel you girl- life is crazy and often is easiest to spurlge and or go out to eat. My doom is at Whole Foods- I spend much to much there when I’m stressed or bored!

  5. Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete on February 18, 2011 at 11:46 pm

We go out to eat maybe once per week at the most. But lately we’ve been trying to cut costs (like everybody else too!) so we go out 2x per month, but we try to do more “special” meals at home to make up for it.

That rose ring is super cute — not something I’d ever wear (I am way too casual), but adorable none the less!

  6. Ari @ The Diva Dish on February 18, 2011 at 11:52 pm

It’s always nice to have someone cook you a meal, but after a while you just want something from home =] and i love your fashion post! Keep them up!

  7. Barbara on February 18, 2011 at 11:55 pm

i eat out way too much during this time of the year because my work schedule is crazy hectic. i really don’t like convenience eating but i just don’t know how to plan otherwise. i’d love some tips or suggestions on how to do better during extremely busy times.

  8. lindsey on February 19, 2011 at 12:02 am

I start to feel the same way about eating out after awhile. Too much of the same ol’ same ol’ and most of the time, I could make whatever it is that I eat out at home for less (and it would probably be healthier). My husband and I are making quite an effort to plan plan plan…though we do have those nights (like tonight) that we just got busy and neither of us wanted to cook, so we went out. *sigh*

LOOOOVE your outfit. The dress is a little $$ for my budget, but since it is such a staple dress, shouldn’t be hard to find something similar for less. I have a black one that is similar, though it is getting a bit big lately (yay?)and I should probably just go with a new one (yay!). The heels and ring are adorable. I’m loving the neutral tones with the pop of color this season. Khaki hasn’t been a color that I’ve even begun to consider in recent years, but this season, I’m definitely giving it a second look! You’re a fashionista as well as a fitnessista!

  9. Maryann (The Balanced Bean) on February 19, 2011 at 12:22 am

I rarely go out to eat! I am such a picky eater and would rather spend the $$ elsewhere. It’s definitely fun for special occasions or social outings though!

Love that format for FF and love everything in the pic! : )

  11. Angie on February 19, 2011 at 12:38 am

Chipotle is such a weakness of mine too!

  12. Kristin on February 19, 2011 at 12:51 am

I eat out a lot, but it’s really difficult to eat out sometimes with my crazy vegan eat fish diet, doesn’t leave a lot of choices at some restaurants. I really prefer to cook, but my schedule doesn’t always allow that so I feel your pain.

  13. Rachel @ Healthy Teacher on February 19, 2011 at 1:46 am

Social eating is hard to break. And being tired when you’re working full time makes it easy to grab a bite. I’ve found that when I put my meals in writing and only buy food specifically for those meals, I eat out way less.

  14. Runeatrepeat on February 19, 2011 at 1:51 am

I’m trying to give myself a limit of eating out 2 times a week – one lunch and one dinner. For some people that’s a lot, but it’s realistic and gives me something to look forward to 🙂 I don’t always use up both times, or sometimes I “save” them for the weekend.

  15. Nikki on February 19, 2011 at 2:02 am

What is your trick for healthy ordering at Chipotle?

  16. Emma on February 19, 2011 at 4:49 am

Awww….have fun with Vies! High five to getting back in the kitchen. I love your breakfast cookies! 🙂 and this blog! 🙂 I’m excited for you getting to see Pilot again. You make such a lovely couple 🙂

  17. Carrie (Moves 'N Munchies) on February 19, 2011 at 6:13 am

i really dont like eating out too much… only if its with good company! i prefer eating what i want cuz im such a little bit of this, litlte bit of that kind of eater!

  18. Katie on February 19, 2011 at 6:52 am

We go out to eat ALL.THE.TIME. I live 4 miles from my parents and my mom works a crazy-stressful-lots-of-responsibilities job which makes her exhausted at the end of the day. It isn’t unusual for her to ask my dad and me if we want to get a glass of wine and an appetizer with her on several weeknights. Not to mention this past weeks Tim Hortons egg white breakfast sammie obsession I’ve had. Thankfully my family eats healthfully, so we always choose a place with health options! 🙂

  19. CampingGirl on February 19, 2011 at 6:57 am

We eat out once a week, we have a standing date night every Saturday.

  20. Carrie on February 19, 2011 at 7:09 am

I usually only eat out once a week or so. I’m not such a pro at navigating menus and after reading your blog for sometime, I’m convinced Iowa doesn’t offer quite the same healthy fare choices as Tucson. Or like I said, I’m not a pro at navigating menus. It is easier to control what I eat at home, but not as fun or social as eating out.

  21. lindsay on February 19, 2011 at 7:11 am

At least your meals were with shared people you love! You are so wise Gina and your’ll get back to your meal prepping no time. I admire you for all your hardwork and the way you look at life. Cheers to getting back to roots!

  22. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on February 19, 2011 at 7:20 am

I almost NEVER go out to eat….as in maybe like twice a year? Why…well, it’s expensive to go out, it’s not vegan/GF/plant-based many times, it’s high in sodium or garlic (i hate them both but restaurants love them), and dare I say..I like what i cook better! So I went from never cooking in my early 20s and eating out all the time to a decade later, never going out and cooking. I prefer it though. If i wanted to go out, I would..I just don’t want to.

That said, you must PLAN! Make extras, make leftovers, etc otherwise it’s easier to go out and spend that $$ on going out!

    🙂

  23. Roselyn on February 19, 2011 at 7:25 am

We’ve got 2 kids so we try to keep eating out at a minimum, for cost and health purposes. Friday nights are our given “eat out” nights; fun for both mommy & the kids. 🙂 I have been in a rut lately since Christmas and we’ve taken out more than once a week on several occasions; I’ve been trying to get back to my meal-planning roots too!

  24. Susanne on February 19, 2011 at 7:27 am

I’m so happy for you that your Pilot love will be home soon. I love the collage format for Fashion Fridays!

  25. chelsey @ clean eating chelsey on February 19, 2011 at 7:47 am

We go out to eat about 1-2 times a month. It gets so expensive!

  26. Steph! on February 19, 2011 at 7:52 am

We stay in the majority of the time, since eating dinner out gets so expensive. Much rather stay in with a bottle of wine and a good movie. Nothing beats homemade cooking too 🙂

  27. Lauren on February 19, 2011 at 7:53 am

We’ve been eating out so much these days, but I know its because we don’t have a kitchen. Our house is being built and for the past few months we’ve been living with my parents. Going out is just so much easier most nights than preparing our own food in their kitchen. It just gets too crowded.

  28. Katie on February 19, 2011 at 7:53 am

Love the funny monster pic , lol!

I really hardly eat out ever, Mike and I go out to a nice place once a month or sometimes 2 for a date night but other than that, I like to eat at home, and I pack Mikes lunch everyday so he doesnt eat out for lunch!

Yay for your detox over party today!

  29. Holly on February 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

Are you wearing one of those balance band things in one of those pictures? Does it work? I’ve been wanting to try one but my husband thinks it’s bogus. I would love to hear what you think of it.

We eat maybe once or twice a week and it’s usually just sushi takeout. I have 2 small kids so going to a restaurant with both of them in tow isn’t always ideal. We save fancy dinners for 2 for date night!

    • Fitnessista on February 19, 2011 at 3:11 pm

yup that’s what i’m wearing and it’s totally a hoax hahah

  30. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on February 19, 2011 at 8:46 am

OMG I love those Aldo heels!! I totally feel some shoe shopping happening today. I don’t eat out very much because I find that a lot of meals can be made even better at home. However, there is one vegan/veggie restaurant near me that I’ve fallen in love with. SO good, and really reasonably priced too! I probably go there about once per month.

  31. Jennifer on February 19, 2011 at 8:53 am

I love going out to eat too because it feels like I am getting fresh air to get out of the house and to socialize with family and such, but I find it much harder to eat something nutritious in a restaurant, I live in a small town and very few restaurants here have healthy options, even the salads have 1000 calories or more so I mostly just eat at home to avoid temptation other than once or twice a week when I go out and look for something with a smaller portion.

  32. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on February 19, 2011 at 8:55 am

I love the social aspect of eating out too. But I don’t actually eat out that often… maybe once a week tops and it’s almost always for sushi. I’d actually like to start eating out more!

  33. Amanda (Eating Up) on February 19, 2011 at 8:58 am

I go out to eat a few times a week. If I do it too much, I definitely start feeling guilty. It’s so much cheaper to cook at home!

  34. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table on February 19, 2011 at 9:18 am

I have been forced to since the whole jaw breaking incident. The funny thing is that I checked my bank account yesterday and was shocked at how much money I had… I tried to figure out where it cam from and it dawned on me that I wasn’t eating out. Holy money saver, Batman!

  35. Fallon on February 19, 2011 at 9:38 am

I don’t like eating out but I do have a few places I like to hit up once in a while. We usually eat out on Saturday and during the week it is home cooked meals and leftovers from those meals. I feel much better about this because I can be a picky eater out in public!

  36. Ashley on February 19, 2011 at 9:57 am

I eat out a lot when I go home from school. It’s obscene. Almost every meal but breakfast I eat elsewhere. I like the style board option!

  37. April on February 19, 2011 at 10:12 am

I have to say Gina, i am always in awe at how well you do choosing your meals at restaurants – and i like to think i do pretty good myself, but you REALLY nail it. I even told my friend i wish i could ‘choose’ as well as you. I love going out to eat, but i never fails, i just don’t feel as good afterwards, there is nothing like a home cooked meal. Even when i order the healthiest meal possible, i just don’t feel right.
I have a very busy social life too, which always revolves around eating out, but i just try to limit the unhealthy eats and try to enjoy the socializing more than the eats:=
Great post, this is a good topic and i love hearing what everyone else does….oh, i eat out a few times a week, depending on what is going on in my life:)

    • Fitnessista on February 19, 2011 at 3:10 pm

thank you <3 it definitely took a few years of practice!

  38. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on February 19, 2011 at 10:28 am

Love the outfit! I try not to go out to eat too often. My husband and I bring our own lunches to work and make going to dinner a special treat. This wasn’t always the case though. We used to be out of control with eating out.

  39. Kimberly on February 19, 2011 at 10:36 am

I try not to go out to eat during the week. Usually the Boo and I reserve the weekend to go out with friends or on a date to eat. This is not only a conscience effort to save money, but also to watch what we eat. We tend to SPLURGE when we go out 😛 So we try to keep it to only a few times a month. Instead we love to have people over for dinner! In fact, Thursday night I made this Greek Stuffed Chicken Breast for dinner and it was Bomb!! It is always fun to try new things! Don’t beat yourself about going out to eat – you are a very busy girl, Gina! Lame excuse? Yes. But oh so very true. 🙂

  40. Clare @ Fitting It All In on February 19, 2011 at 10:49 am

Love the new format – I like seeing whole outfits together instead of random pieces I don’t know how to wear!

  41. MMiller on February 19, 2011 at 10:54 am

I also eat out way too much! We try to still do it cheaply, using coupons and specials, so it helps! We often would have spent more at home! But we too need to start eating in more often! I don’t usually worry about what I order, I order what looks good or what will really hit the spot! And portions are always so big that I always take half home for the next day for lunch!

    Love the fashion post pictures!

  42. Antoinette on February 19, 2011 at 10:58 am

I used to each every breakfast and lunch out. I made excuses like I don’t have the time to make something myself or it won’t taste as good as what I can buy outside of the house. I made a change a couple of months ago, mostly to lose weight, and now I’m really enjoying making breakfast at home and bringing my lunch to work. Also, I discovered that I prefer what I make to eat now! It also doesn’t hurt that I have a little more money saved since making my own meals is cheaper than eating out.

  43. Holley @ Smart Snacking on February 19, 2011 at 11:13 am

I’ve been doing really well with not eating out! I used to be bad without going out to lunch @ work but I only rarely go out now, just for a birthday or if someone is leaving. Otherwise, I try and pack a fun lunch I will look forward to eating so I’m not tempted to go out!

  44. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on February 19, 2011 at 12:12 pm

THankfully, we don’t eat out too much! It is expensive, so we try not to eat out more than once a week or two. I love the fashion format! So much more organized:)

  45. Katherine: Unemployed on February 19, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I need to eat out more; I think I have control issues with other people making my food… next time you’re in atlanta we should feast

Love the polyvore fashion posts. Even though my shopping budget is small these days, I still like to get ideas!
Last year when my husband I lived in Boston we used to go out to eat all the time, there were so many good options steps from our door! Now that we live in the suburbs, we find we’d rather have a nice dinner at home instead of venturing out (this might be just that now we’re old married people – haha). It’s much more cost and health effective.

  47. Katie on February 19, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Random question, Gina 🙂 Have you ever had goat cheese icecream? It’s not vegan 🙁 but ohsogood. Our local icecream place has a goat cheese and fig icecream that is to die for. My boyfriend and I had it last night and it made me think of you. I just had to buy a pint of it to take home for later, too. 😉

    • Fitnessista on February 19, 2011 at 3:09 pm
