The Training Plan

Hi friends Smile Happy Sunday! Hope you’re having an amazing morning.

dogs

Bella has been playing with her cousin Tucker pretty often- I don’t think she’s been too lonely, but I like to give her doggy play time just to make sure.

Here is a beautiful picture of Viessy that her new family sent me:

vies2

They said she’s adjusting really well and they fall more in love with her everyday <3 Makes my heart happy.

So, this morning after my first training run (more on that in a sec), I joined my Nana and Tata for breakfast at the Delicious Egg.

good egg

The above domination consisted of:

Chocolate-covered strawberry flavored coffee (which was just as glorious as it sounds)

coffee

Plain steel cut oats with blueberries

oats

and a scrambled eggy, which I dotted with hot sauce

egg

The egg wasn’t really neon yellow- the iPhone did that Winking smile

Since some of you guys asked how I’m liking it so far- I LOVE it. Don’t get me wrong, the keypad sucks big time (I miss having real keys), but as far as convenience, speed and fun extra stuff goes… my life has been changed. Rest in peace, Crackberry.

This morning’s run actually wasn’t too shabby, mostly because I had these things to entertain me:

tucson 002

Podcasts!

I can’t really listen to music in the car or while I work out anymore. I prefer motivational CDs or books in the car, and have fallen in love with listening to podcasts. The ones I rolled with on today’s run were Money Girl and The Daily Boost. The Daily Boost is perfect for lighting a fire under your booty (which I needed- there is a lot to do this week!!) and I highly recommend both of them. I just figure that I can exercise my brain at the same time I exercise my body Winking smile

As far as the half goes, I’m just doing it for fun with a friend. I’m not trying to beat a certain time, which is why I think I got injured after last year’s princess half.

I’m also not going to blog about my training or post pictures of my Garmin stats.

There are a thousand run blogs out there, but it’s really not my bread and butter, so I’m gonna roll with blogging about the stuff I love (like fitness, recipes, videos and shenanigans)

Speaking of shenanigans.. I’m off on a Sunday adventure with my madre and nana.

Have a great day!

xoxo

Gina

Any awesome podcasts I should check out??

See ya in the morning with Winter Shape Up 2011 Smile

You are a breath of fresh air, Gina! Thanks for spicing up the blog world with non-running posts!

  2. Gill (snaxandthecity) on January 16, 2011 at 1:56 pm

the real reason i read your blog is b/c we are so much more similar in terms of our fitness outlook than i am to the running blogs. those are great too, but i really treasure your other fitness inspired info, reviews and posts!
    🙂

  3. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on January 16, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I don’t even like coffee, but that flavor sounds amazing.

  4. Stefanie @thenewhealthy on January 16, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Thanks for the awesome podcast recommendations! I’m always looking for fun alternatives to music for running! 🙂

And that coffee sounds so good!!

  5. Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun on January 16, 2011 at 2:04 pm

I would love to download podcasts for workouts. That’s actually something I have been thinking about doing once I can workout more again and am not doing just classes (which I was during pregnancy).

Also, I like how you are approaching your training. If I ever decide to train for a race that is how I would go about it too. No pressure.

  6. Whitney on January 16, 2011 at 2:12 pm

I really like “uhh yeah dude”. It’s extremely random and hilarious.

  7. Alice on January 16, 2011 at 2:12 pm

    Oh I love podcasts!
Tranquility De Jour with Kimberly Wilson is a great one about Yoga/Everyday lift/Style etc which I adore listening to
    Yoga Today does good podcasts
And I also listen to the Fit Cast.
    xx

Love the picture of V! She’s so freaking cute, and I’m so happy she’s being loved and taken care of in her new digs.

  10. Annalisa on January 16, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I love podcasts! I listen to far too many. I love stories. If you like them, you should check out “This American Life”, WNYC’s Radiolab, NPR’s Snap Judgement, 2 Fit Chicks w/MizFit, NPR’s Fresh Air (terry gross is such a phenomenal interviewer), The Moth, Freakonomics, and now that I’m having a baby I love Pregtastic and New Mom’s New Babies.

Also, audible.com (amazon owned) gives away free books. I got a subscription after a few downloads and now listen to a ton of books while I’m working out, doing office work, cleaning, home repairs (like painting a room), etc.

    Enjoy your new toy!

  11. Katherine: Unemployed on January 16, 2011 at 2:29 pm

I am not a podcaster! I like reading info; I’m no sure why I’m just not an audio learner

  12. Amber Starr on January 16, 2011 at 2:37 pm

    That coffee sounds amazing!

So glad you’re happy with the iPhone. I really hated the keypad at first too, but over time I got completely used to it. I actually think that I prefer the touch screen now opposed to buttons for typing. Just watch out for iPhone auto-correct because sometimes it picks crazy words.

I’ll have to check out the Daily Boost podcasts!

  13. Josephine @ Creating a Positive Life on January 16, 2011 at 2:40 pm

V looks so pretty, especially with the red hanky – love it!

On my phone right now I am trying out Motion Traxx for when I do cardio – it may feel like you are in a rave, very fast techno beat – so it may or may not be for you 🙂

Have you downloaded any must have apps? I can’t wait to try some of these podcasts you and others have listed!

  14. Melissa on January 16, 2011 at 2:41 pm

I really like the fitcast — great all around fitness info, great speakers, really think you’d enjoy this one! I also learn languages (currently learning dutch for an upcoming move to Amsterdam) so you can search for one of those, really not so bad while working out too 🙂

  15. Amanda (Eating Up) on January 16, 2011 at 2:42 pm

I have such a hard time listening to podcasts. I always get distracted!

  16. Sarah (Sarah Learns) on January 16, 2011 at 2:55 pm

i don’t usually listen to podcasts, especially not when i’m working out. i like music that gets me pumped! i drive from madison, wi to st. louis almost every weekend, though, so maybe podcasts would be better than flipping through radio stations or listening to my ipod to death! i’ll check out the ones you suggested. anything to make those 6-hour drives go by faster…

  17. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 16, 2011 at 2:58 pm

“I’m also not going to blog about my training or post pictures of my Garmin stats.”—

    Thank you!!!

I love my running friends, and I do still run, but I don’t really define myself as “a runner” so dont talk much about it.

I love that my running buddies post about their stats and plans but that you…aren’t going to. That you are going to keep posting about all the other wonderful aspects of your life and not turn it into a training blog 🙂

And how cool that you listen to podcasts rather than music in the car…I still havent jumped on board with that. Would be a better use of my time than channel flipping over the commercials. lol

  18. julia on January 16, 2011 at 3:01 pm

I personally think running sans headphones is really nice…it’s really peaceful and I love the hypnotic nature of listening to my breath, my ponytail swish, the wind, etc. Just a thought. I love listening to podcasts when I am getting ready in the morning tho! I love a lot of the triathlon podcasts where they interview pros/elites. On another note, I find that when i run half marathons ‘for fun’ with no goals other than just to finish and have fun, I run faster! Today, I beat my HM PR by 4 minutes, and my only intention was to not die! lol Enjoy a great Sunday!

  19. Kara on January 16, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Yeah, if people want to read a running blog, they should read mine instead, lol 🙂

  20. Danielle on January 16, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I think it’s sort of disappointing that you won’t be blogging about your running. I know you say that yours is not a “running blog”, but surely by blogging about your training, you’d be able to connect to a certain subset of readers in a different way? A lot of people “aren’t runners” but still run a little, or do the occasional race, so I’m sure they would be interested in reading the training process from a “non-runners” perspective. I enjoy when bloggers talk about things that they are new at or AREN’T a pro at yet, because it can be frustrating when you never read about anyone doing something for fun or something that’s new to them. What about people who want to do a race for fun, but all they can find are “runners blogs” who discuss stats/gadgets/racing in detail and they think they can’t relate to that yet? Just a thought…!

  21. M on January 16, 2011 at 3:10 pm

The pancakes made with oats and teff on HEAB’s blog reminded me of you today for some reason… check them out, I think you’d like them! I’m listening to the Daily Boost as I type this!! 🙂

  22. Bee on January 16, 2011 at 3:12 pm

I’m a podcast fiend…. it’s really all I have on my ipod anymore. My favorites: Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me (for humor), Stuff You Should Know (for some knowledge and humor), Stuff You Missed in History Class, and Two Fit Chicks and a Microphone (MizFit on Line and her sidekick).

  23. sassy molassy on January 16, 2011 at 3:14 pm

This American Life has some pretty interesting stories to listen to.

  24. lian on January 16, 2011 at 3:18 pm

i don’t have an iPhone, but i’ve heard of a podcast based off of the website Howstuffworks.com, and it’s called “Stuff You Should Know” podcast 🙂
    pretty interesting/entertaining !

  25. fitandclean on January 16, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Thanks for the tip on the podcast. I really need to light a fire under my booty. I haven’t been feeling well lately, so maybe it will help!! I never think to listen to podcasts and I love my iPhone. Glad you’ve converted. I used to have a crackberry and the iphone is so much better (even though sometimes I want to throw it out the window!)LOL

  26. Maryann on January 16, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Your breakfast sounds divine! I have never heard of such amazing coffee before. FYI, I wouldn’t mind if you did post your training info, I think its interesting and like to read about that stuff!

  27. Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) on January 16, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I love podcasts that teach me something in an interesting way and tell great stories, like This American Life or Radiolab.

  28. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on January 16, 2011 at 3:27 pm

I love the making love in the kitchen podcast and also CBC Radio Stuart McClean – he is Canada’s # 1 story teller, his stories are fantastic and you easily fall in love with his story telling!! I love it when I’m driving!

  29. Ari @ The Diva Dish on January 16, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Podcast SAVED me when I was pregnant! Since I couldn’t do a hard core cardio workout, they kept me motivated to do light workouts. It was so entertaining! I love John Jay and Rich! They are my favorite and soo hilarious!! =] Glad you like the I phone! It’s like a mini computer where ever you go!

  30. Janna ~ Just Flourishing on January 16, 2011 at 3:32 pm

I love your approach to your half marathon. I also injured myself while training for my last half-marathon and couldn’t run it in the end. I’ve signed up for another one at the beginning of April and I think I’m going to take your approach – just do it for fun, not worry so much about time and blogging about it too much. It will be much less pressure!

I LOVE listening to podcasts while I exercise. One of my favorites is Two Fit Chicks And a Microphone.

  31. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on January 16, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I’ve never listened to a podcast before.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping your blog not heavily focused on the running. I love reading about your life other than running. Haha.

    Have a great day Gina!

  32. Megan on January 16, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I don’t usually comment, but I love listening to podcasts while I’m driving, out for a walk, or for lighter exercise days so I wanted to read other comments for recommendations. One podcast I enjoy is More Hip Than Hippie, it is about “being green,” plus they review a beer and a chocolate (two of my favorite things!) in each episode.

  33. Amanda @ JustAmandaJ on January 16, 2011 at 3:50 pm

Aww, yay for V geting used to her new home, moves like that can be so stressful on animals but she looks healthy and happy! Glad you’re getting used to and liking the iphone, when I first got mine it didn’t leave my hand for roughly three days. My friends didn’t understand until they got one too lol!

  34. Liz on January 16, 2011 at 3:50 pm

If you like financial stuff, Dave Ramsey has his radio program on podcasts. They are great to listen to.

  35. Shanna @ The Truth about Chasing your Dreams on January 16, 2011 at 3:52 pm

I can’t wait to switch from my crackberry to an iphone too! That coffee makes my mouth water! YUM!

  36. Katy (The Singing Runner) on January 16, 2011 at 4:03 pm

I’ve never thought to run to a podcast…. I love my music but podcasts would be a good way to mix it up. 😀

  37. Christine (The Raw Project) on January 16, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Cute pup pics. Agreed on the iPhone, I use a Blackberry for work and hate it compared to my iPhone. I rarely post my run stats too, plenty of other sites do that and my numbers are pretty average and boring. Breakfast looks wonderful.

  38. Namaste Gurl on January 16, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Glad you had a good training session, and I totally understand if you don’t want to share the details about it. It’s your blog and whatever you feel comfortable sharing is just fine 🙂
    Have a good day!

  39. Doc (The Healthy PhD) on January 16, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I love, love, love podcasts while I run, fly, or drive. I like ‘Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me’ the news quiz-show that NPR does and posts for free. I never catch it when it airs on the weekends, so I save them up for travelling and get my fill. They are very funny and keep me updated on the news.

  40. kim on January 16, 2011 at 4:26 pm

i don’t listen to ppodcasts when i workout – i need motivational music for that, but astronomycast, rachel maddow, skeptics guide to the universe, living la vida locarb, being, best of the left, mark kermode film reviews and slate’s culture & political gabfest -are all some of my favorite podcasts.

  41. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on January 16, 2011 at 4:27 pm

  42. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind on January 16, 2011 at 4:33 pm

I love that running’s not really your thang…and you’re running a half marathon. Ha. Just shows how much you truly love fitness in all its forms.

I also love that you’ll still be focusing on fitness (as opposed to only running/training). That’s one of the many reasons I read this blog.

Running’s not really my thang either…except it really isn’t. 😉

  43. Christin@purplebirdblog on January 16, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Two good friends of mine have a podcast called Dial-A-Stranger. They take submitted questions and submitted phone numbers, and then call random folks to ask them the random questions! It is AWESOME and extremely entertaining!

I love running/driving to podcasts much more than music these days. It really takes the ‘pain’ of running away so it is just an awesome experience.

Im a plodder and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running as opposed to competing against myself, its great.

I like listening to Brian Tracy ebooks on my iphone 🙂

  50. Katelyn on January 16, 2011 at 5:21 pm

I’ve started listening to books on tape while I run and it makes me feel ultimately dorky:)

Slash I’ve never had steel cut oats! How are they diff than regular texture-wise?
