What’s Next?

Heyyyyy 😀 Happy Indian Food Wednesday! Anyone celebrating? 🙂

bell

(Bella wishes… she loves chickpeas)

After Zumba last night, carrot beet bean burgers were waiting for me.

with steamed veg, topped with organic butter and nutritional yeast:

It was fan-freaking-tastic. Something about coming home from a sweaty workout and not having to do any food prep makes it taste better. 😉

What’s next?

kindle

I just finished American Wife and (most of) Crazy Sexy Diet on the Kindle. The part of CSD that I couldn’t read was the 21-day plan, because it’s not legible on the Kindle- it was scanned so that the print is extremely light and even if you make the font larger, you cant make it darker :/

What I thought:

1. American Wife

Loved, LOVED this book- can definitely see what all the hype was about. This book follows the life of a woman who will eventually be married to our president when the September 11th tragedy occurs and the war begins. Although it’s fictional, her life is fascinating and certain parts really made me REALLY miss the Pilot. It was the type of book where I dragged it out towards the end, because I didn’t want it to be over.

2. Crazy Sexy Diet

This book was such a joy to read and I love how Kris broke down complex information (and science mumbo jumbo), making it easy to understand. It was an excellent “re-cap” of all of the information I’ve learned about raw foods and vegetarianism/veganism over the years. If you’re new to the vegetarian or raw foods lifestyle, I highly recommend this book. The only downer: Would have loved more recipes and wish that all parts were legible on the Kindle.

Since you guys always help me pick out my book choices, I thought I’d ask ya what I should read next. I like to read one informational or motivational book at the same time as a girly fun book, so any suggestions are very appreciated 🙂 Some recent faves: Good to Great, A New Earth, The Help, Why We Buy, Water for Elephants, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I Remember Nothing

I just munched a quick b-fast

quinoa

(Coffee cocoa blueberry b-fast quinoa)

and am off to BodyPump, the post office and lunch with a Tucson blogger!
xoxo

Gina

Lesson of the day: Do not dry-brush too vigorously.

Girly Book: Anything by Kristin Hannah, my favorite so far has been True Colors.

  2. Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete on February 9, 2011 at 10:22 am

One of my favorite motivational books is The Magic of Thinking Big. I read it a few years ago and need to pick it up again. Other than that I recently finished the Sookie Stackhouse books — they are a very quick read 🙂

How strange about the Kindle not having the whole book — I’ve thought of buying cookbooks on my Nook but I thought it would be easier to have a real book to page through.

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:24 am

from now on, im going to buy the paper copies of these types of books

  3. breakingsilence @ Freshman -15 on February 9, 2011 at 10:23 am

Girly book: “Bookends” by Liz Curtis Higgs. One of my all time faves!!

  4. Michelle on February 9, 2011 at 10:27 am

I loved The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. It’s the story of an architect and a ballet teacher in WWII Budapest. It’s amazingly well written and the story just drew me in.

I just printed out your beet and carrot burger recipe. I’m so excited to try it! I had a burger in NYC over the summer made with beets and I swear, I dream about it.

  5. Diane on February 9, 2011 at 10:32 am

I definitely want to read Crazy Sexy Diet, I’ve heard so much about it.

Question- what are your thoughts on the Body for Life program? I’m considering doing the 12-week thing to get in shape for summer, but they really advocate using a lot of their specific products so I’m wary.

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:34 am

i’m not familiar with the program, but know that mama pea is (peasandthankyou.com)

  6. Jessye on February 9, 2011 at 10:36 am

I highly recommend The Help. It was definitely one of those books I wish never ended.

  7. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on February 9, 2011 at 10:36 am

I’m going to out myself as the biggest dork on the face of the planet, but one of the most informational/motivational books I’ve ever read (several times!) is Dale Carnegie’s How to Make Friends and Influence People. It is such commonsense information that you never really think about – and it honestly made me a better friend, communicator and it helped me in my work environment. It’s very old, so the wording throughout the book makes me laugh, but the lessons and advice ring true – no matter the decade!

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:41 am

don’t worry girl, ive read it too 🙂 and HIGHLY recommend it

    • Sabine @ thefruitpursuit on February 9, 2011 at 11:39 am

sometimes the most dorkiest self-help books are actually really good 😀

    • Alissa on February 10, 2011 at 12:07 am

Thank you ladies! I just bought two of his books off Amazon from reading your comments. I can’t wait to read them.

I just read about the dry brush. You will have to keep us posted on your experience.

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:40 am

i’ve been doing it for over a year and LOVE it- i can actually feel a difference when i don’t use it

  9. Leanne (For Health's Sake) on February 9, 2011 at 10:36 am

Could you do a RR on how to beat feelings of being overwhelmed? I’m trying to get in shape for my wedding (which is just under 6 months away) and I’ve had a couple hard days of feeling like its too much for me to take on. I have about 16-20 pounds to lose (which isn’t a ton, but its still a big-enough number) and I find it so hard to not give into food cravings when I’m stressed. 🙁

  10. Jen R. on February 9, 2011 at 10:37 am

Yay I love book talk. The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo was amazingggggg. The other 2 (Girl who played with fire, and girl who kicked the hornet’s nest) were not as good as the first.

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:41 am

i started that one and couldnt get into it! maybe ill try again

      • Kristin on February 9, 2011 at 10:50 am

With Dragon Tattoo, you definatley have to give it 50-100 pages… then you’re sucked right in. Myself and 3 coworkers read it, and we all had problems at the beginning, but well worth it in the end.

        • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:58 am

          good to know!

  11. kt on February 9, 2011 at 10:37 am

A very funny girly book that I just finished was The New York Regional Singles Halloween Dance by Elna Baker. An inspirational/create your destiny book that I love is Infinite Possibilities by Mike Dooley.

  12. Jill on February 9, 2011 at 10:39 am

My favourite girly book is definitely the Time Traveler’s Wife… so well-written and beautiful. The movie is good but the book is ten times better. I always give it to people as a gift!

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:41 am

that is a truly amazing book. the movie was actually on hbo last night and i caught the end.. enough to make me cry haha

      • Tabi on February 9, 2011 at 10:45 am

I SOBBED like crazy reading the ending of that book! Siiiiiiiiiiiigh <3

  13. Kara on February 9, 2011 at 10:45 am

I just read the Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom and I’d recommend that! I reviewed it on my blog here (http://itsadoglickbabyworld.blogspot.com/2011/01/early-bird-baby-and-book-review.html) and you’d probably like it!

  14. Jackie @ Baking Charms on February 9, 2011 at 10:45 am

the swan thieves!! it’s sooo long but so good 🙂

  15. Colleen on February 9, 2011 at 10:50 am

The Book Thief – will make you laugh and cry and want to re-read it over and over — it’s a WWII story written in 1st person perspective by Death.. AMAZING!

Also, Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver — a memoir of her year growing all her own food and living the “locavore” lifestyle.

    • SaraK on February 9, 2011 at 4:49 pm

      Loooooooooooooove the Book Thief.

    • Nicole on February 9, 2011 at 10:24 pm

I loved this book – I was surprised it was a Young Adult book.

  16. AnneW on February 9, 2011 at 10:52 am

    Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
It’s the amazing epic of an Olympic runner turned WWII POW and it’s absolutely riveting. It’s a true story of on of the finest Americans I’ve ever heard of.
It’s at the top of the NY Times best seller list, so it should be easy to find!

  17. Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) on February 9, 2011 at 10:54 am

Have you read ‘Eat, Pray, Love’? That’s pretty inspirational! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 10:57 am

      yes, loved it!

  18. justine on February 9, 2011 at 10:54 am

Carrie Fisher’s ‘Wishful Drinking’ is a hoot – if you liked the Nora Ephron, you’ll like this. Dry, wise, wry, deeply funny women, both.

  19. Liz @ IHeartVegetables on February 9, 2011 at 10:54 am

Ohh that bean burger looks good! I just tried putting carrots in mine for the first time and it was delish! I still want to try it with a beet!

  20. Mandy (theamazonprincess) on February 9, 2011 at 11:00 am

Oh no! Your dry brush! 😀 haha. I’m in the middle of reading CSD right now. I got it in the first week it came out but I’m so busy with school and reading textbooks that I haven’t had a lot of time to read it. I can’t wait to finish it! She does break all the science mumbo jumbo down very well. She’s a laugh. 🙂

  21. kim on February 9, 2011 at 11:00 am

Have you read The Alchemist? Its, and I quote, “A fable about following your dream”. GREAT book and I’d say very inspirational. I also love Water for Elephants and Time Travelers Wife, so I think we have the same taste in books 🙂

  22. Katie on February 9, 2011 at 11:03 am

    Gina!!

I wish I was celebrating Indian Food Wednesday! I need some Roti in my life soon! lol!

Hey, so great that you happen to need advice on a new read, because I have been searching too, and I came across in my OK magazine a new must read book

Its called Moonface and its a true romance book, the book chronicles the authors battle with kidney disease and how she was saved 3 times by the selfless acts of her husband, brother , and friend, Its a story of hope and love, they say its a tearjerker ; )
Im excited to buy it, I love stories like this! Just wanted to share, I might run to Barnes and Noble and get it today!

    Have a beautiful day! xo

    p.s. Author is Angela Balcita

  23. sana on February 9, 2011 at 11:04 am

Lol too funny sometimes when I am in a rush I am too rough with my hair

  24. Erica on February 9, 2011 at 11:07 am

My fav books are Angela’s Ashes and And Then There Were None. Old books but great reads.

Question! Where do you Zumba? My favorite instructor is no longer teaching at my gym and I’m in desperate need of a new class to attend.

How can I score one of your free class passes for Dance?? I would love to come check it out!

    Thanks!

  25. Tamara on February 9, 2011 at 11:16 am

Hey G’izzle. I have Crazy Sexy Diet on my kindle app on my iPad and had problems reading the font right from the beginning! I thought I was the only one with that problem. It bugged me so I stopped reading 🙁

The Soul of Leadership by Deepak Chopra was amazing.

  26. Chridti on February 9, 2011 at 11:17 am

I bought Crazy Sexy Diet for my Nook last night and could not put it down! I’ve been wanting to go vegan but I have absolutely no support from my family so I’m hoping this book will be life changing for me. 🙂

  27. Laura J. on February 9, 2011 at 11:21 am

I’m reading Crazy Sext Diet right now and it’s amazing! I actually e-mailed the detox diet from the back of the book to a friend who asked for it — I’d be happy to forward it to you if you’d like 🙂

  28. Mo on February 9, 2011 at 11:27 am

I’d hate to see the part you were brushing when that thing broke!

    Take care!

  29. lindsey on February 9, 2011 at 11:35 am

Oh, thanks for the tip that not all of CSD is legible on the Kindle. I was just about to buy it. I guess I’ll have to go for the paper version because I def want to read it.

    🙂

Have you read any Lisa See? I love her books!

  33. Erin on February 9, 2011 at 11:48 am

You should sign up for Goodreads! Then you can ‘friend’ fellow readers and see what they’re reading and their book reviews. Post your goodreads info on your blog and I bet you’ll have lots of reading buddies in a heartbeat 🙂

I just finished “This is Where I Leave You” by Jonathan Tropper and “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and simply adored both of them. Very highly recommended!

    • Ashley on February 9, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I love Goodreads also! You can keep track of your own books and find real reviews for other. Great website!

  34. Heather on February 9, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I just finished Sarah’s Key. I thought it was amazing and couldn’t put it down. My favorite book of all time is The Kite Runner. Definitely not a girly book but one that every emotion is felt. Ah so good!

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2011 at 12:50 pm

loved both of those. sarahs key was so haunting- i thought about it for a long time after
still trying to get the pilot to read the kite runner

  35. Lindsey on February 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

One Day for a great fiction book. It follows two friends (boy and girl) over 20 years in London and checks in on them on the same day each year… Kind of a way will they or won’t they end up together stoy.. and it’s going to Be made into a movie with Anne Hathaway this year!

Poser for non-fiction/memoir.. Each chapter is a yoga pose and she relates a part of her life to the pose.. it follows a writer in Seattle after she gets married, gets into yoga and has kids.. over the course of ten years. REALLY good!

    The Help!!

I just finished Crazy Sexy Diet as well and am on day 3 of the “cleanse,” tailored a little bit to my own preferences and kitchen equipment. I really enjoyed it and feel like I learned a lot and have much to think about now!

Book idea: Crucial Conversations. It’s about having those talks with people that totally freak you out–getting your message across and communicating effectively.

  38. Liz on February 9, 2011 at 12:10 pm

I just finished “A Rope and A Prayer” and it was incredible. It’s a memoir about a NY Times journalist kidnapped by the Taliban for 7 months while writing a book. It’s told from his perspective and his wife’s, who is a fashion editor at Cosmo. Not girly, but a fascinating look at a tough situation!

  39. Kelly F. on February 9, 2011 at 12:11 pm

I just read Unbroken, passed along to me by my own pilot :). It was one of the most amazing true stories I have ever read (by the author of Seabiscuit)! It is about an olympic runner and his ordeal after crashing at sea and later as a POW in WWII. I have always appreciated the amazing sacrifices of servicemen and their families as an AF wife, but after reading this, I understand why WWII veterans are known as “the grestest generation.” I could not put it down, and could not stop thinking about it when I finished!

  40. Ashley on February 9, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Book Suggestions: One Day, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Help (saw that you didn’t read it yet…ITS A MUST!)

    • Ashley on February 9, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Sorry – Misread your post. Just saw that you already read The Help. oops!

  41. Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) on February 9, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I just read Jodi Picoult’s House Rules and it was really good. I also love anything by Eckhart Tolle or Deepak Chopra for more philosophical reads 🙂

  42. Ali on February 9, 2011 at 12:34 pm

For girly books, I love anything by Emily Giffin. Also one of my all time favorite books recently was “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”–it’s a series of letters and was so so so good. I could NOT put it down!!

  43. Kristina @ spabettie on February 9, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Water for Elephants, because it’s going to be a movie! 🙂 I am totally obsessed with this website right now, you enter a book that you like, and it gives recommendations based on that book:

  45. Lauren on February 9, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Check out ‘The Hormone Diet’ by Natasha Turner. It’s right up your alley. I think you will really agree with everything she has to say. 🙂

oooh i havent heard of that- will have to check it out for sure

  46. Maddie on February 9, 2011 at 12:40 pm

While I am not celebrating Indian food Wednesday, I am celebrating Thai food Wednesday and am sooo excited for dinner tonight because I’ve been craving curry like crazy!

For a girly read, if you haven’t gotten into the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, you should give it a try. Super hilarious, the books are always entertaining.

For a “discovery” read, I’d recommend the Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath. It shows you what characteristics/personality traits you lean on the most and how to leverage them in your job and everyday life. I found it really interesting!

  47. Maddie on February 9, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I should also mention the book Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. Not really girly, not truly inspirational… but definitely a great read and showcases lots of “human” emotions and situations. It won the Pulitzer a few years ago I think.

  48. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on February 9, 2011 at 1:03 pm

I LOVED crazy sexy diet, but I agree, I wish there had been more recipes! Thanks for the book recommendations:)

  49. Nicole on February 9, 2011 at 1:09 pm

I LOVE posts like this because we can all go through the comments and come up with lots of books to read. My favorite book is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. I recommend it to everyone, but always with the disclaimer that it is written from the point of view of a dog. Despite that, it is not silly at all. I’ve also heard good things about The Hunger Games and want to pick it up soon.

    • kim on February 9, 2011 at 2:35 pm

YES! The Hunger Games Trilogy is amazing!!!

Sorry about the broken dry brush! I actually buy the kind with a removable handle– and then I throw the handle away the second I get it home! I prefer just holding onto the brush “head” I guess… almost like you’re brushing a horse! Ha ha.

I’m reading CSD right now, too, and LOVE it! Pretty much just a good reminder of everything I’ve already learned, but Kris’s personality is so much fun! Wish there were more recipes in there, too!
