That’s a Spicy Meatball

Hey guys! Happy Saturday! Hope your day has been lovely so far ๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m so excited that Iโ€™ll be meeting so many of you in Chicago during the Healthy Living Summit weekend. It will be a blasty, fo sho ๐Ÿ˜‰

Last night, we were hankering for sushi, so we picked some up at Publizzle.

sushi

I rolled with the brown rice vegetable roll, with Nama Shoyu and wasabi on the side for dipping purposes.

So. stinkin. good.

I also received some *special mail* from my Nana! She always hooks me up with cute festive blog plates.

Thank you, friend <3

This morning, we had to take Bella-boo to the vet for her bordatella shot, I stopped to look at a friendโ€™s wedding dress and then came home for Cullen juice.

-1 organic apple

-1/2 organic beet

-3 honker carrots

-a nub of ginger

juice

The pilot walked by while I was sipping it and asked how it was. So I gave him a taste ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pilot: Mmmm. Thatโ€™s pretty good. [Pause] WHOA!!! Thatโ€™s a spicy meatball! You actually enjoy that?

Bahahah. Iโ€™m a little generous with my ginger usage ๐Ÿ˜‰

+ Millet and mustard and a 2 egg white puff topped with nutritional yeast

Today, Iโ€™m actually making a REAL DINNER!

Iโ€™ve been a bit of a slacker lately and have been going out to eat with friends quite often, so tonight weโ€™re enjoying a lovely meal at home.

I get to use this thing:

steamer

A food steamer!

I needed something to steam the tamales with, and a stock pot with a steamer was $40, and this electronic food steamer was $19โ€ฆ so I got the electronic one. I think it will be fun to use later for veggies and fish, too ๐Ÿ˜€

The menu for tonight: (all Mesa Grill recipes from Bobby Flay)

Goat Cheese Queso Fundido with Blue Corn chips

Sophieโ€™s Chopped Salad

Shrimp Tamales

Foodgasms for all ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have a wonderful day <3

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: If you could re-create a meal from your favorite restaurant, which would you choose? Also, what are your Saturday workout plans? Iโ€™ve got a hot date with my yoga mat ๐Ÿ˜‰

Todayโ€™s workout jam: โ€œMy First Kissโ€ by 3OH!3 (peppy and fun- great for running or ellipticizing)

If I could re-create any restaurant meal it would have to be Fish Tacos from this local restaurant called Big Licks Tropical Grill. So. freaking. good. It’s blackened white fish (which they cook to perfection), lettuce, cheese, tropical rice and this mango salsa that’s to die for. Mmm. So so good!

  2. lindsay on June 19, 2010 at 12:35 pm

shrimp tamales, yum! Will you post recipe? sounds like a lovely dinner. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2010 at 12:42 pm

it’s bobby flay’s recipe (in his mesa grill cookbook) so i can’t post it, sorry!

  3. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on June 19, 2010 at 12:42 pm

There is a lentil salad that I’m going to try to recreate later today. It was from a really great Greek restaurant when I was in Arizona!

  4. Carly @ Happy Healthy Foodie on June 19, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I had sushi last night too! Yum yum ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Shelly on June 19, 2010 at 1:05 pm

I want to recreate a watermelon and jicama salad I had as part of a dish at this restaurant in Houston called Cyclone Anayo’s. It was part of a bigger dish that included pork carnitas, cumin rice, and a creamed corn and black bean sauce and really balanced the richness of the rest of the dish. I think it would be great with lighter fare too though, like ceviche or grilled chicken.

You need to stop it with your goat cheese queso fundido. My stomach has informed me that I need to eat that in the very near future. Your whole menu sounds amazing, and I’m in love with tamales!

  7. Terrie @ Fit4myLifetime on June 19, 2010 at 1:25 pm

Mushroom Quesadillas from this little Mexican restaurant in South Carolina (which, sadly, no longer exists). Mmmmmmmmm. Gotta work on that recipe!!

  8. RhodeyGirl on June 19, 2010 at 1:28 pm

    THAT MENU IS INSANE! AMAZING!

I love it! Have fun in the kitchen!

I took a class called “butt kickin workout” and it was a mix between body pump, Insanity, and p90X? Pretty much my ideal class.. AND I got PB to take it with me! We were both sweaty beasts afterward and LOVED it.

  9. Allie on June 19, 2010 at 1:30 pm

oh- i used to have a steamer and i really loved it and got a lot of use out of it. i had to get rid of it when appliances were taking over my life and i streamlined to a city kitchen. your menu sounds delicious!!

  10. Cassie @ Tasteful Tales on June 19, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Can’t wait to see your meal later! Sounds delicious. I started my Saturday with the CardioX DVD from P90X ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Katherine on June 19, 2010 at 2:00 pm

I can only imagine mario from the nintendo games saying “that’s a spicy meatball” in the overly fake accent haha sorry had to share

  12. jassy on June 19, 2010 at 2:07 pm

you can stand wasabi? ๐Ÿ™‚ my brother can’t stand it and i didn’t dare try it…hehe:)

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2010 at 2:15 pm

      i live for wasabi

  13. Jess on June 19, 2010 at 2:09 pm

That sounds amazing. I’ve been to the Mesa Grill a couple times here in NYC and loved it! One meal I’d love to recreate is from a restaurant in Italy called La Giostraโ€”their grilled calamari dish is amazing. That and the rice ice cream with raspberries…

  14. Bethany @ More Fruit Please on June 19, 2010 at 2:20 pm

The dinner menu sounds spectacular! Can’t wait to hear what you think of the steamer. So I tried making ‘Cullen Juice’ for the first time this week and it came out so pulpy!! It tasted good, but I was literally chewing my juice. I’m thinking that this isn’t normal. I have a pretty cheap blender, so maybe it’s just not up for the job?

  15. D on June 19, 2010 at 3:20 pm

I assume Publizzle is Publix, right?!

The sushi at my Publix always looks great – but the ingredient lists are HORRIBLE. Do you read them before? I was surprised to see Publix sushi on your blog because you never eat those ingredients! Unless different places have different labels, the sushi at my local one has HFCS, flavourings, colourings, additives, tons of sugar, etc. Just curious!

    • Fitnessista on June 20, 2010 at 9:24 am

      yes, publizzle = publix
and you’re totally right- the ingredients are horrifying, but not as bad for the veggie ones. every purple moon i’ll have publix sushi (because it’s way better than restaurant sushi here) but usually prefer to make it at home because the ingredients are so sketchy

  16. Megan @ The Daily Sweat on June 19, 2010 at 3:31 pm

If I were to recreate a restaurant recipe it’d probably be something thai – like pad kee mao or black rice pudding for desert. yum! My Saturday workout plans are all finished up! I ran a 5K and pumped some iron. Now ready to enjoy the sunshine!

  17. Julie @ Pickley Pear on June 19, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Agghhh I’m so glad you’ll be at HLS! Very excited to meet you ๐Ÿ™‚

Tamales! That sounds amazing in the steamer. Enjoy your night home with the hubby!

  18. Christina @ A Beautiful Mess on June 19, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I have a steamer similar to yours and I love it… It’s great for making a big batch of steamed veggies to munch on. You can just throw everything in there and let it do its thing :O)

  19. Pure2raw twins on June 19, 2010 at 4:38 pm

    We love our ginger too!!!

Aww we wish we could go to Chicago to hang with you again and so many other great bloggers. : (

  20. Dawn on June 19, 2010 at 4:44 pm

That dinner looks fantastic! However, I’m a sucker for anything involving goat cheese.

For my workout this morning, I ran a super-fast half-marathon. Way fun.

  21. Brynne on June 19, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Hahaha the Pilot is so funny – that spicy meatball comment made me think of video game Mario saying it in his Italian accent :0)

  22. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on June 19, 2010 at 5:20 pm

I’m interested to see how your tamales come out… i’ve never been brave enough to try making them!

  23. Kim on June 19, 2010 at 5:28 pm

    – your nana has very nice handwriting. seems the older generation does.
    – sushi!- hard to get the rice perfect.
-i did jari love’s 1000 calorie workout today!

  24. Jaclyn on June 19, 2010 at 5:50 pm

In NYC there’s this restaurant, Spice Market, they have THE MOST AMAZING blackened shrimp and pineapple dish. It’s amazing. Nuff said, I would recreate that! As for my sat workout, hot power yoga for me this morning, t’was lovely! ๐Ÿ˜€

  25. Kate on June 19, 2010 at 6:19 pm

There’s a restaurant in town called Brio that serves the best Italian food ever! I’d recreate happy hour that my friend and I go to once a month. We always have the steak bruschetta, shrimp cocktail, mini burgers, bottle of wine (red in the winter, white in the summer), and this coconut banana dessert shot. SO FREAKING GOOD!

Today’s morning workout was Bikram yoga! ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Jordana on June 19, 2010 at 6:39 pm

My workout today was a hot and sweaty date with your ex (running) ๐Ÿ™‚ He said to tell you WhatUP??? I don’t think he’s over you yet girl! LOL

    • Fitnessista on June 20, 2010 at 9:23 am

LOL. don’t tell him i’ve been thinking about him ๐Ÿ˜‰

  27. LisaG on June 19, 2010 at 7:30 pm

That menu sounds to die for. I bought bobbys cookbook since you so highly recommnded it. I swam today since it was so hot out. Then cooked an assortment of stuff.

  28. Mari on June 19, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Your Nana is so sweet to send you gifts like that ๐Ÿ™‚
I was just at my fav restaurant today and had their salad with goat cheese, strawberries and glazed pecans. It was sooooo good and I said to my mom, why is it salads at home never taste as good? So that’s what I would choose.
My workout for today was shopping… Guess that doesn’t really count, but I’m taking a workout break cause I really hurt my sciatica from overtraining ๐Ÿ™ it’s getting better tho, and then I’m gonna try moderation.

  29. ActiveEggplant on June 19, 2010 at 8:09 pm

We have a steamer like that and absolutely LOVE it! Haven’t cooked any fish or chicken in it yet, but all kinds of veggies – never a bad turnout. You’ll love it for sure!

Those plates from you Nana are too cute! Making me excited for 4th of July festivities already!

  30. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on June 19, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Aw, that’s so cute of your Nana to send you those plates! Mine always sends me gift certificates for the grocery store to support my expensive food habit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I would recreate this coconut basmati rice that I once had at a restaurant. It was THE definition of foodgasmic!

  31. fran hlavacek on June 19, 2010 at 8:34 pm

    Hi!
I re-created a roasted vegetable salad from a little off the beaten path in NY one day. Roasted eggplant, squash, onions, carrots, asparagus, the works. Served it with feta cheese and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette over mesclun mix. Holy Copy Cat Batman, was that good.

My Saturday workout was something called a Run Amuck. It’s a 5K race over mountain terrain with obstacles tossed in , just in case you get bored. The end culminates in a 90′ crawl through some muddy water under ropes to the finish line. It was the hardest thing I ever have done physically, and I’m very proud of myself!
    Peace,
    fran

  32. Bernadette on June 19, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I hope you will share you’re recipe for tamales. I’ve never
been able to figure out how to make them healthy.

  33. caronae on June 19, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Your sushi napkins are the cutest things ever! My Sat. workout involved a little bit of everything! I didn’t wanna commit to a long run or weights sesh or yoga class or HIIT so I mixed it up with a bit of each! Fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Nicole on June 19, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Chilean Sea Bass from Bonefish Grill!

I just have to comment on how much I Love You! Everyday, even when I was in Maui I checked your blog. You are happy, enthusiastic and fun! Where can you get a better combo on-line? You inspire me without making me feel guilty = you are the real deal! I just wanted to take a sec and tell you how much I enjoy YOU. Hugs to you and yours,

That’s a spicy meatball! haha love it. I can’t stomach too much ginger in my juices. Just a tad is all I need!

  38. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on June 20, 2010 at 12:10 am

Steamer! Very cool and I have heard people rave about them…it’s on my list of appliances I am considering, i.e. slow cooker, tofu press, steamer. None of them are needs and will probably get little use…but, I hoard appliances ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on June 20, 2010 at 9:21 am

      haha i do too

  39. Robin@RawkinRobin on June 20, 2010 at 12:24 am

  40. Sharie on June 20, 2010 at 7:48 am

Yum! I love sushi, and anything Japanese. Delicious..
My Saturday workout is always a run with my pooch. She’s the best exercise buddy and great motivation!

  41. Marissa on June 20, 2010 at 8:17 am

My Saturday workout was 30 min of physical therapy followed by 30 min of biking intervals! Honestly, I’m not much of a cook… omeletes and protein pancakes are about the extent of my culinary abilities!

  42. Cara on June 20, 2010 at 8:28 am

Ummm…I think I would want to re-create a grilled veggie po’boy with a side of spicy sweet potato fries. This is one of my fav. dishes at a cute New Orleans themed restaurant.

  43. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on June 20, 2010 at 10:14 am

Hah! I like that, “spicy meatball”- the pilot is so funny ๐Ÿ˜€ And I love my ginger too, gives it a great kick!

That dinner sounds amazing. Enjoy it!

I would definitely re-create a meal from Crazy Burger!
