The best breakfast sandwich ever

Hi friends! Thank you so much for the sweet hair compliments and for letting me know what you’re up to this month ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you’re having an amazing September so far <3

When I was in LA a few weeks ago for the IDEA conference, I had the BEST breakfast sandwich I think I’ve ever had. We stayed downtown, which I learned the hard way doesn’t have a ton of shopping or awesome food options nearby — a lot of places were cab distance but not quite walking distance. I also found out that walking around Downtown LA by yourself is a little creepy. I did what I usually do and wore sunglasses, pretended like I knew where I was going (I kept repeating the directions in my head while I walked), and tried to find something local and delicious for my first meal, which happened to be after a mind-blowing 3-hour nap.

There was a Huffington Post article featuring some eats near the conference and when I saw “Badasserie” I knew that was one the one.

Menu3

It was an all-vegan spot -I’m not vegan, but I love vegan food and restaurants- and the breakfast sounded out of this world. I was kind of surprised when I got to the location of Localita’s that it wasn’t a full-up restaurant but rather a food stand in a small storefront. Whenever I’m at a new place, I’ll usually ask the servers what they recommend. The guy working the counter suggested his favorite: a vegan sausage breakfast sandwich with “cheese” and maple syrup. Done and done.

Bfastsandwich

The idea was simple: super savory with a hint of sweetness, but it’s a combo I don’t often enjoy in my usual breakfast rotation.

Bfast sandwich 1 of 1

I’ve recreated it just a few times at home….

Bfast sandwich 1 of 1 2

This isn’t really a “recipe” (just take your favorite English muffin, toast it, add sausage of choice, cheese and drizzle maple syrup), but definitely a combo worth sharing.

Some more of my favorite breakfasts:

Breakfast cookie dough cereal

Cookie cereal 1 of 1

The breakfast cookie (and baked version)

Bfast cookie ingredients 2 class egg burrito (with sriracha and turkey bacon)

Egg burrito

Perfect protein pancakes

Protein pancakes 1 of 1 5

What’s in your current breakfast rotation? What’s the best restaurant breakfast you’ve had? We’re crazy about the brunch at Loew’s Ventana Canyon. Desserts, BBQ salmon and a Bloody Mary bar ๐Ÿ˜‰

xoxo

That looks so good! It reminds me when I used to be on the english muffin/egg/cheese kick for like 1 year straight. Now I have been on the avocado toast with a fried egg smothered in sickening amounts of hot sauce for seriously the past 6 months. I Can’t. Stop. Eating. It! Have a great Tuesday!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:47 pm

yum- i love avocado toast, too!
      thank you! you too ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m recently obsessed with a fried egg sandwich with avocado and tomato! SO good…I’ve only been eating in on the weekends though. During the week with less time (aka I’m running late) I’ve been enjoying smoothies while I can before the weather starts to shift to cooler temps.

Why did I have to read this AFTER eating breakfast?! lol

you can have breakfast anyyyyytime ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m always blown away when vegan restaurants are amazing. There’s one here in Boulder called Native Cafe, that I l-o-v-e, and I’m far from vegan!

    • Tom T. on September 3, 2013 at 1:27 pm

I too am not a vegan but vegan food always seems to be so good. Maybe I need to be vegan…but then I remember I love hamburgers.

  5. Jackie on September 3, 2013 at 10:35 am

Two Ingredient pancakes and oatmeal are always in my rotation!

  6. Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food on September 3, 2013 at 10:37 am

Yesterday I made a bunch of breakfast sandwiches for the week that taste like Egg McMuffins- just English muffin, ham, baked egg, and cheese. Super yummy! That sausage sandwich looks awesome- I love the idea of adding syrup!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:46 pm

      the classic never dies ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on September 3, 2013 at 10:37 am

I’m not sure how I feel about the sausage + syrup combo, but maybe I should try it out one of these days… ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite breakfast lately is your cookie dough cereal – I can’t get enough!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:46 pm

yay, i’m so happy you like it!

  8. Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat on September 3, 2013 at 10:49 am

Mmmmm…I love this idea for a breakfast sandwich! I think putting the maple syrup on it sounds amazing! Your breakfast cookie has been in my rotation for the past couple of weeks! Love it!

  9. Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves on September 3, 2013 at 10:52 am

Ooo that breakfast sandwich sounds delicious! I’m not a big savory person when it comes to breakfast. I pretty much always love sweet breakfasts including overnight oats (with nut butter and fruit. always.), toast with nut/seed butter and banana, and big yogurt bowls! I also love making waffles and pancakes when possible. I really want to try your cookie dough cereal soon since I’ve heard so many raving reviews ๐Ÿ˜‰ Your breakfast cookie was awesome when I tried it!

  10. Lucie on September 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

Oh I LOVE sweet and savory combos!! That sounds so good.
I am all about my eggy oats lately. 3 eggwhites, 1/3 cup of oats, ground flaxseed, a ton of cinnamon and blueberries – cook in a skillet as a scramble. If you let it sit overnight it turns into a cold oatmeal bake which is absolutely heavenly.

  11. Ashley @ Life and Fitness on September 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

This sounds so yummy. I love salty and sweet combos. I love dipping sausage and bacon into syrup. But I can’t put jelly on egg sandwiches. It grosses me out when people do that!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm

      its so good, though! haha

  12. Danielle on September 3, 2013 at 11:18 am

That sounds so good! I wouldn’t ever think of that combo too and it sounds amazing. Lately I’ve been loving smoothies or eggs for breakfast!

mmmm loving the discussion you’ve started, girlfriend ๐Ÿ™‚ i need new breakfasts. it’s been the same old thing over and over and this morning i finally changed it up a bit. added raspberries and used ghee! ๐Ÿ˜€ yes! i bought ghee and totally thought of you ๐Ÿ˜€ it’s like my new favourite healthy fat! so amazing. i’ve used it twice since buying it on sunday. AMAZING. have you used yours yet? i usually have eggs for breakfast, but wanting to change things up. i actually looked at your breakfast recipes last night, so i’ll need to put them into my routine again because i’ve tried most of them and love them all <3

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:39 pm

      yes, i’m in love!! ๐Ÿ™‚
thank you friend. hope you’re enjoying the week!

  14. jodye @ chocolate and chou fleur on September 3, 2013 at 11:34 am

I love the sweet/savory combo, but I most often enjoy it for dinner. Lately I’ve been using jalapeรฑo strawberry jam to add some sweetness to salads full of spinach, avocado, mushrooms, and beets. It’s wonderful! I should try it in breakfast though.. never hurts to change things up a bit.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm

you lost me at “jalapeรฑo strawberry jam.” where do i find this?!

  15. Whitney @ Life - Love, Whit on September 3, 2013 at 11:37 am

Normally my classic breakfast is two eggs fried with sliced avocado and sriracha. But since I’ve been pregnant I can’t stomach it. I apparently this baby hates avocados!! The only thing I actually like is a cheese bagel with cream cheese which clearly isn’t a good breakfast to have every day hah! This week I’m trying oatmeal with almond butter and strawberries and we’ll see how the baby feels about it.

  16. Crystal on September 3, 2013 at 11:37 am

It’s been so hot down here in southern Illinois…so it’s been green smoothies for breakfast all the way! Although I am ready for some pumpkin smoothies soon. On the weekend we make a ridiculously awesome breakfast like eggs benedict or pecan pancakes, YUM

  17. Angie on September 3, 2013 at 11:53 am

We just made english muffin breakfast type sandwiches yesterday! (breakfast for dinner, word) I got the applegate tukey bacon, organic eggs, some horizon sliced cheese and chowed down! ๐Ÿ™‚ so funny! Love your breakfast cookie — it’s a staple here.

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm

bacon, egg and cheese on an english muffin = best ever

  18. Erin on September 3, 2013 at 11:54 am

I almost always eat either an egg with an english muffin with butter + jelly (also love the salty/sweet combo!) or some greek yogurt and kashi…and I’m usually running late so it’s either consumed in my car on my drive to work or sitting at my desk. I’m not a huge sausage fan but when I do eat it it has to be accompanied by some maple syrup!

  19. Mari @ Food for Life on September 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

That sandwich actually sounds really good.
The favorite breakfasts for me right now are green smoothies (had one this morning), steel cut oats, and yogurt parfaits. Anything quick and easy right now!

We just went peach picking so my current breakfast rotation is anything and everything peach!

It is my favorite fruit, but hopefully I won’t start getting sick of it haha

  22. Ashley V on September 3, 2013 at 12:17 pm

I get into major ruts because I find myself addicted to a certain breakfast. I’ll eat it for about 6-9 months or so before switching things up. Seriously. I’ve been doing overnight oats and a green smoothie since April. I love this idea though!

  23. Christine@ Apple of My Eye on September 3, 2013 at 12:23 pm

That looks divine! I love the sweet and salty combination of flavors so this looks right up my alley ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on September 3, 2013 at 12:34 pm

I have pretty much the same thing for breakfast everyday. A chobani Greek yogurt, a whole wheat English muffin or sandwich thin, almond butter and some fruit. I love it because it’s easy to pack on the go and make at the office! I wouldn’t mind it, though, if someone got up early and made me a breakfast burrito. Maybe I’ll have to hint at that . . . ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Linda on September 3, 2013 at 12:35 pm

I’ve been using the recipes from the Happy Herbivore 10 day plan: oatmeal and quinoa, sweet potato w/pb sauce, and her blueberry pancakes (really good). I’m a big fan of sweet for breakfast.

  26. Ali on September 3, 2013 at 12:38 pm

I need to try this! I’m in a SERIOUS food rut! I have been too busy to cook lately so I end up eating the same things over and over again. This is easy enough! Now, to find some GF english muffins around here…

  27. Traci on September 3, 2013 at 1:07 pm

Yum! I’ve been on an eggs-for-breakfast kick for the longest time. I make something similar to you: fried eggs or egg whites on an almond flour muffin with cheese (the almond flour muffin is made with 1 egg white, 1/4 cup almond meal, and a little baking powder, mixed together then microwaved for 1 minute and cut in half). It’s so good I can’t seem to kick the habit!

    • Fitnessista on September 3, 2013 at 6:44 pm

that sounds amazing! i’ll have to try your muffin recipe ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Laurin @ Be Well Body on September 3, 2013 at 1:09 pm

Yum! Sounds great! I love egg and cheese sandwiches with a little jelly and this looks like a fun (protein-packed) twist on that!

  29. Becca on September 3, 2013 at 1:11 pm

I can’t get enough of oatmeal made with almond milk and topped with peaches and sliced almonds! My all time favorite restaurant breakfast came from The Bookstore in Charleston, SC (sadly closed now). It was an open-faced biscuit, topped with a fried green tomato, egg, and red-eye gravy!!! So yummy and southern!!

  30. Anna @ Fitness ร  la Anna on September 3, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Oh man, I love egg breakfast sandwiches too! With a little bit of goat cheese and dijon on there….delish!

      yummmmm!

  31. Alex @ Kenzie Life on September 3, 2013 at 1:13 pm

That breakfast sounds really interesting! I’m in a rut with breakfasts now that I just started my post-bacc, and by rut I mean I’m lazy and I’d prefer to sleep in than wake up five minutes earlier to make something I enjoy more than toast. I vow to do that starting tomorrow!

  32. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on September 3, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I have to admit that I’m not much of a savoury breakfast person, but adding a little sweetness to an otherwise savoury meal is something that I could definitely do. And I’m on a pretty big oatmeal kick right now, just changing up the toppings whenever I find myself getting bored. Current favourite? Almond butter and honey. So.darn.good.

  33. Taylor @ Single-tracked Mind on September 3, 2013 at 1:52 pm

That sandwich sounds amazing! Now I’m ready for second breakfast. ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Liz on September 3, 2013 at 2:46 pm

I’m actually on a morning breakfst sandwich kick so I’ll have to add a version of the one you posted about to the rotation! I usually just have an egg fried in a little ghee on an Ezekiel English muffin or two Wheetabix with almond butter and honey (I’m weird and don’t like cereal with milk so these have the perfect amount of crunch for me and the almond butter is filling).

  35. Becca on September 3, 2013 at 3:26 pm

My breakfast looks just like that last photo…I made a sort of granola-breakfast cookie combo with oats, chia, peanut butter, almonds, coconut, honey, and lots of blueberries. I’m also a huge fan of the fried egg sandwich with hot sauce that the other commenters mentioned. Sometimes I make it into an even easier on-the-go meal by just throwing one corn tortilla on top while it’s still cooking, and then eating it like a quesadilla as I grab my things to dash out the door.

  36. Brittany on September 3, 2013 at 3:38 pm

This looks like something I would really like. I’m all about the sweet and savory combo. I do something similar with a toasted ezekiel english muffin, veggie sausage, low sugar jam and cooked egg whites. I tend to go through phases with my favorite breakfasts so I literally ate this sandwich almost every day for a few months. Right now I’m on a steel cut oats (with cinnamon and egg whites stirred in) bender. ๐Ÿ™‚

So hard to choose! As a kid I loved my dads “Dutch babies”! So light and fuffy with powdered sugar, YUM! Now a days, I’d have to say I a great sweet potato hash with a side of blueberry almondmeal pancakes!!!!

  40. Yolande on September 3, 2013 at 7:19 pm

I like you am not vegan (I dabbled in it for a year but realized my body works better with small consumption of organic meat a few times a week). I still love vegan restaurants and frequent them often especially while travelling.

My favorite breakfast combo is oatmeal, protein powder or egg whites, and lots of almond butter all topped with crunchy cereal yummmm ๐Ÿ™‚ I love pancakes also, but usually opt for oats. I am a sweet over savoury in the morning kind of girl.

  41. Emily on September 3, 2013 at 7:43 pm

I rocked a hole-in-the-head a couple weeks ago. Was ridiculously proud of myself, no spills or leaky egg or anything!

  42. Charity Dawn on September 3, 2013 at 8:12 pm

My current breakfast (I feel lost without it and if I eat something different I have to have it later in the day) I have a costco english muffin with a fried egg and cheese and coffee… Its awesome!

  43. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on September 3, 2013 at 10:25 pm

My breakfast hasn’t actually had much rotation lately…whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter and banana. Hasn’t changed for several months, it’s just too good to let go!

  44. Livi on September 3, 2013 at 10:30 pm

mmm sweet and salty is one of my faces!! have to try this !

  45. Nicole on September 3, 2013 at 11:32 pm

My current favorite breakfast is eggs with cottage cheese. It really amps up the protein content and keeps me full for hours!

  46. Jill on September 4, 2013 at 4:25 am

Loving Vegemite, avocado and Swiss cheese or tomato on sourdough toast. The saltiness of the Vegemite goes so well with the avocado!

Another favorite is mango, blueberries and Greek yoghurt – it’s the ultimate summer breakfast!

  47. Crystal@TheFastFitRunner on September 4, 2013 at 10:47 am

Always in the delicious breakfast rotation: eggs, oatmeal, and protein pancakes! But that sausage muffin looks pretty incredible.

  48. Denise on September 8, 2013 at 12:36 pm

That looks delicious! I’m going to go get some veggie sausage patties right now. The best restaurant breakfast I’ve ever had is the multi-grain pancakes with blueberries with a soy mocha at Figtree’s Cafe in Venice Beach.
