Juice thirty

Hiiii ๐Ÿ™‚ How’s your day been? Livi has a bit of a cold, so we’ve been laying low over here. My madre came over for a little while so I could drop off our tax documents, and I brought back La Parrilla soup for the the three of us. Their chicken and rice soup is the perfect remedy when you’re fighting a cold, especially with a little lime and salsa.

Late last night, I hit up the gym for a short workout. It felt so good to zone out on the treadmill with my Kindle, especially before a rough night of sleep for everyone.

Crops

Naptime was spent cleaning up around the house and doing neglected chores, followed by an energizing green juice.

(I’ll take the Vitamix, food processor or juicer out onto the patio so I don’t wake little miss up during her nap.

I used to focus on juices as a main meal component (especially during my days experimenting with raw cuisine), but now consider them to a nutritious snack or beverage option. Fresh juices yield ย an awesome dose of nutrients and antioxidants, but since the fiber is removed, they’re not very filling. I look forward to juices or smoothies following lunch as a little pick-me-up during the afternoon slump.

Juice 1 of 1

This one has a few of my favorite ingredients, including the spicy kick from ginger. Not only does it add some great flavor, ginger is also a fantastic remedy for fighting the cold. Ginger contains chemicals called sesquiterpenes, which have been shown to fight rhinovirus.ย It call also help to soothe a sore throat, suppress cough and reduce fever. It’s a bummer that Liv doesn’t like it; I made her some ginger tea and she wasn’t a fan. (She’s been sipping sweet Tulsi Rose, which we both love.) Some remedies that have seemed to help: a little honey on a spoon, elderberry, vitamins, Hyland’s sniffle tabs and good ol’ fashioned dye-free Tylenol when she had a fever.

Some more of my favorite cold remedies:

-A whole head of roasted garlic. I eat this EVERY time I start to feel sick, and it helps me to fight it.

Vitamin C smoothie.

Tomato tea.

-Fluids and rest. (<– remedy for almost anything)

Here’s the combo for today’s juice:

Sweet and spiced green lemonade

Zumba and Wildcats tonight! Enjoy the rest of your day <3

xoxo

Good to know I’m not the only one that drags her blender/processor into weird places while the munchkin sleeps. It’s the laundry room for me! ๐Ÿ˜‰

haha sorry, this is too cute and funny! It’s interesting how we’re all more alike than we think we are! I take my blender to the bathroom. ๐Ÿ˜›

And Gina, I love ginger in my juices! One of those ingredients that you only need a pinch of, but makes such a huge difference in taste. Not to mention, ginger is a staple in Asian cooking and I think it’s one of the reasons so many Eastern Asians have pretty good health (of course, there’s tons of other healthy foods they eat).

I am a huge fan of fresh juice! The place next to my work does some amazing ones, including a green lemonade that is similar to your recipe. I love it with extra ginger!

  4. Livi on March 5, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Ill have to try some garlic!! That sounds like an amazing cure!

  5. GiselleR on March 5, 2014 at 6:01 pm

I love fresh juices but a juicer is just doesn’t make sense for me right now, so I have to make do with the occasional juice from a juice bar ๐Ÿ˜•
So jealous of both your juice and the sunshine right now!! (It’s snowing outside my window ๐Ÿ™ )

  6. Pua on March 5, 2014 at 6:26 pm

Poor baby. ๐Ÿ™ I hope she feels better!

I’m not a big juice type of person. I like BULK, and I doubt juices would fill me up. Now smoothies? THOSE I can get behind!

  7. jen on March 5, 2014 at 6:44 pm

does she like lemonade the natural store I worked at made fresh ginger lemonade it was good as long as the person making it didn’t get heavy handed with the ginger I’m a wimp when it comes to spicy stuff lol!

  8. Taylee @ twist me fit on March 5, 2014 at 6:52 pm

What kind of juicer do you use? I’m in need of a new one!

  9. Colleen on March 5, 2014 at 7:02 pm

Any tips for juicing leafy greens and herbs? I have a Breville, and I feel like it just shreds the leaves and whirls them into the waste bin without extracting very much.

  10. Katie on March 5, 2014 at 7:04 pm

Glad I’m not the only one who takes the Vitamix, food processor or juicer out outside so I don’t wake up the sleeping baby!

  11. Traci on March 5, 2014 at 8:26 pm

I’m glad you said something about juices not being a complete meal. That’s what bugs me about the juicing trend, and the juice cleansing trend right now. But that looks delicious! And I overdo the garlic when I feel a cold coming on, too. Plus lots and lots of hot tea, even in the summer.

  12. toni on March 5, 2014 at 8:49 pm

Hey Gina! Do you roast the garlic with anything?

  13. Sara @ LovingOnTheRun on March 5, 2014 at 10:09 pm

I miss being able to go to basketball games of our college team! hope you enjoy!

I really need to use my juicer. I always say that but then I opt for something quicker!

  14. Eileen on March 5, 2014 at 10:28 pm

Have Liv try some Elderberry syrup. So good for keeping immune system strong during cold season and is great in extra doses when sick. I’ve been giving it to my daughter since she was a baby (she’s 11 now) and works so well! (Nature’s Way Sugar Free Elderberry Syrup is s a good brand.)

    Stay well!

    • JennP on March 6, 2014 at 10:53 am

My mom used to give us a teaspoon of Elderberry when we were getting sick. Funny, I’d totally forgotten about it!

I love juice!! I’m thinking about getting a juicer but worried I will be lazy and won’t end up actually using it.

    Recipe looks good!

  16. Megan on March 6, 2014 at 6:32 am

I make a juice almost every morning. Lately if I am feeling a little cold I do a Vitamin C juice with Orange, Lemon, Grapfruit, Carrots and Beets.
Just curious…do you eat the head of garlic raw?!?

  17. Maria on March 6, 2014 at 7:58 am

Whenever someone is sick in my house, I make a big batch of chicken/veggie soup and load it up with garlic. My little one is suffering from a cold too. It’s juice and camomille tea with raw honey. The dr said it’s the best to help fight off colds.

  18. Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork on March 6, 2014 at 9:26 am

Thanks for sharing the tomato tea! It actually sounds kind of good! I’m all about rest, water, Emergen-C, and echinacea tea! I do also try to throw in some ginger tea, but will try to add in tomato tea in the future (hopefully far, far future!).

  19. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on March 6, 2014 at 9:33 am

I’ve been doing elderberry syrup with the kids too. It seems to have kicked their latest colds quickly! I also take raw apple cider vinegar mixed with EmergenC. I can’t get the kids to drink more than a sip of this, but I guzzle it. I stayed healthy through the last round of colds around here, so maybe it helped? I would totally do the garlic thing except I don’t think my husband would appreciate it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Cassie Vaughn on March 6, 2014 at 10:56 am

I’m good to get my blender cleaned so smoothies for me! I wish smoothies kept me full but I need big breakfasts to keep me fueled properly throughout the day.

  21. Alisha @ Alisha's Appetite on March 6, 2014 at 11:35 am

You have such an awesome life! Glad you said that you don’t use juices as a meal…I cringe when others do that.

  22. Alex @ Kenzie Life on March 6, 2014 at 11:46 am

Ginger and lemon are my favorite ingredients in green juice. I used to prefer sweeter juices and smoothies but over time, my taste buds just stopped craving the sugar. This post comes at a perfect time though, because I just got finished with a 2 1/2 week period of midterm/work hell and my body is feeling every minute of it. I’m definitely looking at the vitamin c and tomato tea recipes! Have an awesome day!

  23. char eats greens on March 6, 2014 at 11:48 am

I just bought a huge bag of organic lemons that were on clearance because they’re going bad soon, and I wanted to use them for green juices!! I think seeing 2 juicing posts in a day is a sign to bust my juicer out!!

  24. Tracy on March 6, 2014 at 1:49 pm

    Get better Liv!

Have fun at Zumba and the b-ball game! It’s time for March Madness yo!! My fave athletic time of year ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Neha on March 6, 2014 at 4:22 pm

I love ginger in my juices too!! Adds such a zing and is so healthy.

Gina – could you do a post or a paragraph on how you balance eating meals with daily exercise schedule?
For instance, if the exercise time interferes with lunch time or dinner time, especially dinner time with the family etc. Coz one can’t exercise soon after dinner, right? How long do you wait after you’ve eaten, so as to still get in a work out? Or is better to have a snack, work out and then eat? But by then it would be too late for my husband, so we eat separately? confused!

    Any suggestions would be great!

  26. Kelly @ Femme Fitale on March 6, 2014 at 8:52 pm

Just another reminder of why I need a juicer!

Also, brilliant about taking your appliances out on the deck during nap time. Not sure I never thought of that before!

  27. Josie on March 7, 2014 at 1:07 am

That juice recipe looks good! I have recently restarted my juice routine and I love putting lemons and ginger in my juice. So good! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  28. Maggie on March 7, 2014 at 7:59 am

So funny- I make that EXACT juice!! Very tasty ๐Ÿ™‚

Try oil of oregano when you start to feel sick… it’s a miracle worker!

  29. lauren alysse on March 9, 2014 at 9:47 am

made this juice this morning and loved it! thanks for the recipe gina!
