Family: Weeks 21-23
2nd pregnancy updates so far:
Now, we’re at 23 weeks! It’s hard to believe that next week I’ll be 6 months pregnant.
Random thoughts and things that I noticed:
Baby punches me when it’s time to eat. If it’s been a while since my last meal or snack, a dance party instantly begins in my stomach.
I miss orangetheory. I was trying to figure out what it was about OTF that made me bummed about missing it, because I get plenty of activity through teaching barre, Zumba, BODYPUMP, and spin. I realized what it was: almost all of my official workouts are classes that I teach. OTF was my one class that I did for me, because I loved it so much. It was a chance to completely zone out, get in an awesome workout, and enjoy that team atmosphere from our studio. While it’s obviously worth missing it for a few months to make sure everything is ok with the placenta situation, I will be pretty stoked when I finally get to take another class.
Why did I wait so long to wear maternity jeans? I’m still wearing some of my usual jeans and jean shorts (using the hair tie trick around the button loop), but Stitch Fix sent me these white jeans (on sale now!) and these skinny jeans. They feel like heaven. I’m finally convinced to buy new sports bras since my current ones are cutting off my circulation.
While my energy levels are back to normal and I’m enjoying the second trimester honeymoon period (before third trimester kicks in, you feel like you’re waddling around everywhere, and beyond ready to meet the little one after waiting for so long!), I don’t feel as productive. Part of me just wants to sit on the couch, balance a mug of cereal on my belly and watching Kardashians. The urge is strong.
(Hello in there!)
Awkward pregnancy moments:
Having to use the ladies’ room the entire time I’m teaching Zumba. I went right before class started, and still had to go the entire time. Merengue with a full bladder is no fiesta.
I’m writing this post at a coffee house in PB and I have NO CLUE where I parked the car. When I leave, I’ll be wandering around aimlessly and praying for a sign that leads me to it. Pregnancy brain is real, friends.
Cravings:
-PIE. I can’t even type that without salivating. I’m a cake, cookie, or brownie girl. Pie has never really been my thing, unless it’s the Costco apple or pumpkin pie, and I only eat the insides, with a fork, standing in front of the fridge. When the Pilot opens the fridge door to serve himself a piece, a sad crust stares back at him. Currently, I want ALL THE PIE. We went to a pie shop in Maui (Leoda’s! you must go if you ever visit), and it was everything in my power not to go every day. I had banana cream pie with a graham crust that made me weep tears of joy. If anyone knows an awesome pie shop in San Diego, please let me know!
-Turkey bacon. I’ve never been a huge bacon person either, and now I picture wrapping everything in turkey bacon before eating it. Like, ‘This pizza is good, but it would be even better wrapped in turkey bacon.”
-Soup! I’m still on a major soup kick and have been enjoying a bowl in the afternoon most days of the week.
Aversions:
Bell peppers. I can eat them, but I don’t enjoy them as much as I used to.
Weight gain: Not sure. At my last appointment a couple of weeks ago, I was up 14 lbs. My guess is 16-17.
Workout changes:
Everything is pretty much the same with teaching, and for my own workouts, I’ve been enjoying TRX, Barre, yoga and lots of walking. I’m trying to walk the dogs outside each day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. I went for a run last week that felt great, so hoping to get in another short beach run this week. I’ll be doing a 2nd trimester recap post with all of the changes I’ve made this trimester (similar to this one), but so far, I’m thankful that for the most part I’ve been able to stick with my routine (minus OTF).
Looking forward to:
-Our next ultrasound. We have another one coming up to see if my placenta has moved. I’m staying hopeful that is has -the last midwife I saw said they almost always migrate north- but either way, we get to see that sweet baby. I can’t wait!
-My fitness director is throwing a get-together for me and another girl who works at the club and is expecting in September. I didn’t really want any showers or “sprinkles,” but thought it would be fun to do something small to celebrate the beeb, so this is absolutely perfect. I’m so thankful to her for thinking of me.
Baby purchases:
An “ALOHA” onesie in Hawai
Looking at ordering a Solly Baby wrap, which would be a good complement to the K’Tan in the newborn phase. I’m a huge fan of babywearing, and last time, I stuck with the more structured carriers like the K’Tan, Ergo and Babyhawk. I would love any suggestions for a woven wrap for beginners. There are 3927394 types and every time I start looking, I get a little overwhelmed.
Keep on growing, baby! We already love you so much. <3
I love this post so much! I’m 22 weeks, and I’m having so much fun following along with you! (And going back and reading your pregnancy updates from Liv!)
We have a solly baby and love it! Baby loves it too. HIGHLY recommend!!!
For babywearing, I would suggest seeking out a local chapter and see when their meetings are (most have fb groups). They should have a lending library for you to test out some materials and types to see what you like. For newborn I love the ease and comfort of a ring sling, but it is very important to be taught the correct way.having contact with a babywearing leader is invaluable for us!
This is great advice! I am a member of a chapter, and love it. My baby is 3 months and we used a woven. The learning curve wasn’t as high for me, and we love our didymos Indio. Stripes our good for beginners and recommended brands are girasol, natibaby, and didymos. There is a swap on fb to buy used wraps. Used wraps are easier to wrap with for beginners.
I’m fighting a sweet tooth hard this week (28 weeks.) I was really good about my diet in the 2nd tri, but I’ve been having ice cream, or half a bag of marshmallows, every day this week! I’m the opposite with pie thought – I’ll eat the entire crust and leave the inside for my husband.
I love that you got the baby an aloha onesie!! You are looking absolutely beautiful! I’m so glad everything is going so well with pregnancy!
Yay! You look awesome. Love that you number one craving is pie!
looking good mama!
Aww, i just love reading pregnancy posts. My second boy is 10 months old. We have a girasol woven wrap and I really did like it, but we almost exclusively use our buckle carrier now, so we didn’t get much use out of the $150 worth of wrap. Too hot for me in San Diego… I also loved our ring sling in the beginning. Apparently there’s a fairly large san diego babywearing group on facebook, but I don’t have fb, so can’t comment.
I just ordered this Soothe Shirt for baby wearing (http://www.lalabu.com) my sister discovered. I can’t wait to try it when my baby arrives!
I want to sit on the couch and balance a bowl of popcorn on my belly and watch the Kar-trash-ians (what the man of the house calls it) and I’m not even preggers ;). You look so good girlfriend! xoxo
I was walking to my car the other day after work, only to realize I walked to the wrong parking lot and walked right past the parking lot where my car was actually parked that day. The struggle is real. We go for our 20 wk US next week and I cannot wait!!!!
Your baby bump is beautiful!! My baby girl starts punching and kicking me when I need to eat too. It’s like a little reminder to keep her healthy and happy in there … I love that. I’ve been considering a Solly Baby Wrap too. My good friend is using one for her newborn and has been loving it. I didn’t babywear a whole lot with Hunter when he was a newborn since he was on oxygen the first month of his life, but I hope things will be different this time around. I have a feeling I’ll appreciate being hands free with a toddler running around too! 🙂
Get a ring sling! They are so convenient for itty bitty babies, and so much easier than a wrap. I do love wraps, though 🙂 If there is a babywearing group near you, I would recommend going and having them help you learn to wrap. So much easier than youtube!
But for reals, ring sling!
i feel like they’re hard to use! i borrowed one from a friend with liv and couldn’t figure it out. i will definitely check out a group. thank you!

You may have already tried extraordinary desserts but if not it is pretty great. I’ve been to the little Italy location yum! And they have mini pies!
ahhhh! going this weekend. thank you!
This is exactly the place I was going to suggest!
Pregnancy brain is real and annoying! In my first trimester I went to the wrong airport for my flight. Not fun!
oh nooooo
Hi Gina! Looking good, pregnant Momma. I’m glad you’re feeling good, even if not as productive. And I totally get what you mean about OTF. I think that’s why I like to go to yoga and to barre, because I don’t teach those classes. Speaking of which, I’m coming down to SD this summer and will be hitting up one of your classes I hope! 🙂
let me know when you’re here! will you be at blogfest?
Yes! I will be there! I’m speaking in the Lightning Round too! 🙂
Extraordinary Desserts near Little Italy has theeee best desserts and pies!! I craved wedding cake when I was pregnant and living in SD and they delivered! Whoop!
happening
We have enjoyed wraps from Didymos and Pavo Textiles. You may also like the look of Kindred which is a new woven wrap company. Look up your local BWI group – they probably have a lending library to help you decide.
perfect. thank you so much!!
Have you tried Chicken Pie Shop on El Cajon blvd, its about 10 mins east of Whole Foods. They have amazing Chicken Pot Pie and super yummy pies. banana, apple, cherry…the pies are cheap. The whole menu is very very inexpensive.

ooh i will check it out!
Regarding babywearing, I loved the baby K’tan for my first baby but I barely used it for my second because it wasn’t supportive enough. I had to basically strap #2 baby on and go about taking care of big brother, and I needed the more structured carrier so I had use of both of my hands and didn’t have to constantly adjust it. My “I’ve totally got this” moment was nursing lil sis in the carrier while spotting big bro on the rockwall at the playground.
you are a superhero. that’s what i was thinking, too. the ktan is SUPER stretchy and mine is slightly too big so we shall see
This post made me smile so much! I have no children, nor am I pregnant, but I love reading about your experience and joy through the process, so thanks for sharing. Maybe someday I will relate and read back on these posts again.
thank you so much, cara!
Glad to hear you’re feeling great! I’m at my sweet spot in my second trimester too and I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I can!
oh my goodness – bras! as soon as I got measured and some new bras I felt like a new woman. the difference was amazing!x
You look fantastic! It is really great to see how active you are during pregnancy. I am currently 7 weeks with my first…everything is so new to me! I am still working out 5-6 days a week, but have just taken my intense workouts down a notch for the time being. I am also starving ALL of the time. Do you remember being so hungry so early on? Ha! And, I can’t believe you just sized up in a sports bra. My boobs already feel so much bigger. It’s really kind of ridiculous…I don’t think I’ll be able to hold off as long as you (although my current ones are pretty snug for running! :-))
I was really sick for quite a while with my first, but after the morning sickness bit the dust I was so hungry like you. It was actually so bad I was up in the middle of the night to eat a bowl of cereal EVERY night. I attribute it to working out and having good metabolism – who knows though 🙂
Enjoy as many moments as you can!
I’ve been craving pie so badly too this week! Not sure why? Especially apple… i might make one this weekend.
I love my solly baby wrap! I used it so much when my babe was smaller! They are made out of a breathable jersey knit type fabric, are super soft, and come in many different fun colors! They are also local, the woman who developed it lives in San Diego 🙂
Betty’s Pie Whole. It’s in Encinitas, right next to the botanical garden. Definitely the best pies around!
Hi,
I’m 31 weeks pregnant and starting to think about getting my shape back post partum. We have a very small budget and I prefer to exercise at home, so personal trainers and the gym aren’t really an option. Do you have any recommendations of dvds geared towards post partum workouts? I’m thinking of the Tracy Anderson post pregnancy workout, have you heard of it?
Thanks!
i have her mat workout, and while it’s definitely a little “out there,” it’s a tough workout! that would be a good option, or any of the beachbody programs.
Hi Zoe,
I just finished Insanity postpartum and my core is so strong now. Just make sure to either read online how to work your core back into shape or talk to your Dr. You cannot do all the moves (nor should you want to) correctly or safely so just be patient. It WILL come! To start, I did only push-ups on my knees and only as many as I felt I could safely do. I did not do hardly any of the ab moves, but instead did ones I read about online to pull my core back together. If your lower back starts to hurt, then you know it’s too much stress as your core is not able to compensate.
Anyway, this is all my uneducated opinion but it did work for me and I’m now 5-months after baby (started working out when she was 10-weeks).
Good luck and take your time!
ah you’re looking good! 🙂
Fingers crossed regarding your placenta!! I was told at my last OB visit that I have a low lying placenta and have another ultrasound scheduled in 8 weeks to make sure it moves outta the way!
I have the Boba cloth wrap – We love it and my husband wears it too!
