Awkward Pregnancy Moments
This whole gluten-free bun baking is awesome. 100% amazeballs, and 100% better now that the ill feeling has gone away (for the most part). I love thinking about the little nugget growing inside of me, researching baby items, getting together nursery ideas, skimming through the books Iโve read for more info and talking to other moms and soon-to-be-moms about their experiences.
Bonus points for:
-the ever-growing girls. Amazing.
-the fact that my clothes still fit (for now) โ all of my lululemon tanks are looking a little strange, though
-hair! My hair has always been SUPER thick – now itโs even thicker and the shiniest and healthiest itโs ever been
-no โmonthly visitorโ for another 5 months or so
-extra foot massages and TLC from my incredible hubby
-ultrasounds and the fact that we *might* find out if itโs a boy or a girl this Friday
As fantastic as itโs all been, there have definitely been a couple of interesting moments in there too.
Awkward pregnancy moments:
1. Being asked if Iโm pregnant in the least tactful ways ever.
To the people that know me well, itโs pretty obvious that I have a baby bump. To strangers, Iโm probably still in the โis she, or isnโt she?โ limbo phase, where they donโt really feel like asking to avoid an awkward moment. That is, unless theyโre a guest at the resort I teach at and feel like asking anyway.
After Zumba on Saturday โwhich was AWESOME- a frequent resort guest came up to me and said โis there a baby in there or are you just gaining weight?โ Of course I was pleasant to her and talked about it, but it was the second time it happened to me last week. When I told one lady that yes, I was pregnant, she said โgood. I was worried that youโd been eating too many 4th of July cupcakes.โ Wow!! Thank goodness I AM pregnant, or I would have been a little offended. Or a thousand times worse: what if I lost the baby and had to answer that question?
Iโm pretty sure the only tactful way to ask is during conversation, when you can say: โSo, do you have any kids?โ and the pregnant mom-to-be can say โyes, one on the wayโ or the non-pregnant woman, who wouldnโt be offended in the least, can answer the question with whether or not she has children.
Iโve been making more of a point to mention it in the classes I teach โespecially stretch since I canโt lay on my back or stomach- but maybe until itโs 100% my-belly-might-knock-you-over obvious, maybe I need one of these shirts?
Bahaha.
2. The people at Maloneyโs on Saturday night who thought I was a pregnant lush.
My favorite mocktail looks deceptively like a real thing: club soda, splash of cranberry and a lime. Itโs pretty much the only thing Iโve been ordering to drink when we go out because the bubbles calm my stomach and the bit of cranberry and lime are super refreshing. The only way you can tell it isnโt a real cocktail is because they serve it in a large soda glass instead of the short cocktail glasses.
On Saturday night, we were walking to sit down on the patio, and as I walked past a group of people, belly protruding from under my maxi dress and mocktail in hand, they totally stared as I walked by. The judgment wasโฆ awkwardโฆ and I almost wanted to go tell them that it wasnโt the real thing, but if theyโre ever looking for a good mocktail, it really is a great choice.
3. The spontaneous munchies.
Itโs funny because Iโve been snacking pretty much all day, which helps keep nausea at bay, but suddenly, Iโll get hit in the face with a crazy hunger. It was snacktime and I was picking up some groceries at Sunflower Market today and the place was a madhouse. I was standing in a very long line, and started to get ridiculously, insanely hungry.. and a little dizzy. I looked into my cart and did something I donโt think Iโve done since I was little- I ate something that I had yet to pay for. I dug into these brown rice chips like a savage beast.
When I got up to the register and handed the cashier my half-empty bag of chips, she scanned it, glanced down at my belly and I *think* she understood.
Iโm sure there will be many more awkward moments to comeโฆ
That was my pregnancy mocktail, too! Loved it!
Haha I laughed so hard reading this post! I’m pretty sure the awkward moments are not over yet!
I can’t understand people that ask women if they’re pregnant unless it is 150% obvious. Some people just have no filter/shame/decency – sheesh! And the same goes for “when are you guys going to have a baby?!” What if that couple has been trying to have a baby and can’t conceive, or like you mentioned, recently lost a pregnancy? I say it’s better to be safe than sorry and keep your mouth shut!
I love hearing all the ‘awkward’ moments, seriously i don’t know what comes over people!
A co-worker finally asked me if i was preggers, and since i did just announce to a few it was ok, but another co-worker next to him said “OMG cannot believe you asked her that, if her water broke in front of me i woudn’t even say anything!!!!” I thought that was hilarious, some people just can’t help it, i guess:=
Brian Regan, the comic, has a great sketch on accidentally asking a woman if she’s pregnant. I’m sure it’s on YouTube, and good for pregnant laughs ๐
As far as an awkward story goes, this past weekend I was at a party with a lot of my friends and their kids. My best friend had just had a baby 10 days ago and still had a little pooch going on–completely normal! And she’s gorgeous. Anyway, this lady walks up to her and asks, “So, when are you due?”
[Silence]. My friend answered graciously that she had her baby 10 days before, but she was so embarrassed! That’s about the worst thing you can say to a woman who’s just given birth! And, like you said, who EVEN asks? Especially a woman?! I feel like women, especially those with kids, should know better.
/Rant.
It’s true though. People are really outrageous to pregnant women. It was my major frustration when I was pregnant!
This miscarriage part that you mentioned would be so difficult! ๐ My cousin carried a baby to term last year and knew that he didn’t have a chance at life when he was born. People would constantly ask her about when she was due, what she was having, etc. I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been for her each day!
that breaks my heart.
When I first got pregnant we had a wedding to go to and we were not ready to tell everyone yet and not drinking is a tell tale sign…so I drank the same mocktail all night (of course if i had as many real ones I would have been fighting people!)…pretending it was the real thing. But the waitress kept bringing it over in a large soda glass and I was trying to whisper that I wanted it a real drink glass because I was trying to hide the fact that I was pregnant and she blurts out “Oh, my God, congratulations!!” Good thing everyone else was really drinking and not paying too much attention to her ๐
The same thing used to happen to me when I was pregnant, I wouldn’t have cravings but all of a sudden i would be starving and couldn’t eat fast enough!
Can’t wait for Friday!!!
Jealous of the thick hair situation!!! ๐
hi! when i go out to restaurants or bars now with my hubby and friends, if they have Mojitos, i get a virgin one.. SO GOOD! the mint is so nice on the tummy. and the bartenders are really nice about it!
Some ppl at work have asked me if i was pregnant and when they do, i look down at my belly and gasp and say “omg! its all those chips ive eaten, its showing!” hahahahaahha i know, im cruel.
nice post!
bahaha! i love it ๐
Love this post. It’s adorable, candid, and I love hearing all about the awkward moments…it’s nice to hear what really happens from your perspective, thank you for your honesty Gina ๐
It’s weird how people seem to assume the worst. I mean, it’s not like virgin drinks are a big secret! BTW, I’m not even pregnant I’m just not much of an alcohol drinker so the next time I go out I’m totally just getting your pregnancy cocktail!! Sounds like a perfect summer drink ๐
it totally is- i drank it all last summer too. very refreshing ๐
Ha! Love this post. I’m all about the mocktails right now, bump or no bump.
My latest awkward pregnancy moment: my husband and I visited some old college friends last Thursday who still live in our old college town. Everyone wanted to hit the bar scene, and I obliged with the thought of said mocktail in mind. When we showed up to the bar (the ever-classy Wild Bull), we were carded and given wristbands. “Wristbands? Weird. They never give these out here.” Turns out it was Teen Night. Ugh. Pregnant at a college bar on Teen Night. So. Awkward.
OMG, those chips are so delicious. I’m not pregnant yet and I can easily polish off half the bag.
So fun hearing about your experiences, even the awkward ones.
Oh my gosh, that is hilarious! I love hearing about the baby and you have such a witty way of writing! It’s so exciting and refreshing. I just wanted to say that I find you very inspiring and you are my new role model for a healthy life style. Thank you so much for this blog. It makes me endlessly happy and I’m hoping some of your advice will help me avoid the freshman 15 in college this fall! ๐
thank you so much for reading!! <3 good luck in your upcoming freshman year! college was my fave ๐

A few years ago I was working at JCPenney as a cashier and one day I was wearing one of those blouses with an empire waist that can sometimes be “poochy”…I was ringing up this middle-aged man and he goes, “Boy or girl?” and I was like, “What?” He says, “Are you having a boy or girl?” And I get a little flustered and try to make it a little less awkward by chuckling and saying…”Oh, I’m not pregnant. Must just be the way this shirt fits. It’s alright”…but the damage was done haha He immediately apologizes and walks away pretty quickly..and needless to say, I never touched that shirt again!
holy rude and awkward!
Oh my gosh these are so funny… I already read #2 and I knew I had to come read the original…. You are hilarious!
Don’t worry about people judging.. I love your easy going attitude about it all, although I’m sure it can be very hard to handle after a long day!
