Doing work
Some random things about work lately:
-When you work in the weight room, you have to empty out the towel bins. Theyโre sleek silver mesh trash can type things, and you carry it into one of the spa laundry rooms to empty the bin for housekeeping. You walk back to the weight room with said bin, nice and empty. Well, the bins are slightly heavy and made of metalโฆ and you walk through the spa lobby to empty the bin. You probably get where Iโm going: I dropped the bin in the spa lobby, aka the house of Zen. People were lounging, waiting for treatments or reading, and here comes clumsy Gina with the trash bin rolling and clanking around everywhere. My face was bright red.
-I wear Crocs for pool classes. We have to wear closed-toed shoes, and sneakers are too hot, so my mom gave me her red Crocs to wear. Before, I made a vow to myself to never wear Crocs- letโs be real, aesthetically, theyโre a nightmare- and I have to say: I like them. A lot. They may be the comfiest things Iโve ever worn in my life. And that, my friends, is reason #14,527 why Meg is writing most of the Fashion posts on the blawg.
-Speaking of pool classes, today was my first time teaching an entire pool class! I was a ball of anxiety (swimming is not something thatโs intuitive for me so itโs been tough to learn about cueing, etc), but thank goodness my assistant was awesome and I think it actually went pretty well. Hereโs the playlist I used:
I had the participants swing their pool noodle over their head and say โwhoo hoo!โ when we were done ๐
Some eats:
Protein oats (1 C oats cooked with frozen mixed berries, Sun Warrior and topped with a blob of almond butter)
Leftover roasted veggie salad with Goddess dressing
+ lots and lots of snacks, including the bowl of cereal and eggs Iโm snacking on while typing
When I teach intense classes, itโs a tricky balance because you want to provide enough energy without having a belly full of food- so Iโll have a snack in between each class, a good lunch and a huge dinner. Weโre off to eat at our neighborsโ house ๐
Hope youโre enjoying your night!
xoxo
Gina
Something to think:
I always wondered how teachers eat before class as I’ve struggle with evening Zumba classes – too hungry if I don’t eat, too full if I do. Good to get some insight!
My eating is a nightmare. It’s a good thing I don’t live by the “no eating after 8pm” way of life. I’d die. Sometimes my biggest meal of the day happens at 10pm :/ it’s just so hard to eat a proper meal when you’re running around for classes.
I have to ask, as an aquafitness instructor myself, what type of movements are you doing for your pool classes? I just can’t imagine wearing crocs and not killing myself while teaching, I too may be considered a tad clumsy ๐
i do lateral shuffles, jogging, rocking horses, twist and tuck jumps, cross country, cross country suspended, jumping jacks suspended, stuff with the noodle, kickalongs, suicide drills…
the crocs actually stay on really well! what shoes do you wear?
I guess having never had crocks on my feet I’m not well informed on how well they stay on your feet, I would have though they would go flying with your first kick!
Right now I’m wearing a pair of New Balance running sneakers with loads of cushion, they aren’t my fav’s but since I only teach aqua once/week I haven’t bothered to upgrade. One of our instructors wears flip flops. Can you even imagine? I would teach in my bare feet in a heartbeat before attempting that in flip flops! lol
same way! usually i have a solid breakfast and dinner, but lunch is pretty small and LOTS of snacks
That bowl of oats looks soooo good right now. I might have to whip some up for dessert!
I’ve always wanted to try a pool class but something about the idea of swimming in a group of people’s sweat weirds me out! I KNOW it’s the same as swimming in any pool ever, but I guess since you’re all in one area doing the same thing it seems worse? Maybe I’m just crazy!
Anyway, your playlist looks AWESOME (and the Crocs…not so much ๐
hahah you are welcome to make fun of the crocs. they’re horrible. and they feel sooooo good haha ๐
pool classes are way more challenging than they appear! at first i thought it was for older ladies to bop around in their sunhats to “wooly bully.” i was mistaken. it kicked my booty
Looks like a fun playlist! Congrats on successfully teaching a pool class!
I have crocs, too. I mostly only slip them on to go in the yard, or garage but they are so comfy!
LOL the bin story is nothing we went to see The Dictator tonight and I dropped an open bottle of coke on my neighbor and after that while excusing myself dropped it on the floor again and everything was in water, very awkward!
Crocs…they are fabulous little kid shoes, too. No laces, straps, velcro, buckles, or really anything that needs to be “done” or tied. Slip on and slip off and as a mom, that’s reason #1 I love them ๐
I am judging you for the crocs <3
I was always curious how trainers ate before they had to teach a class. I don’t know what I would do, I hate the awkward timed classes when I can’t have a big meal but I’m hungry. Oh no crocs haha, as long as you don’t wear socks with them I guess they’re okay for the pool are ๐
I need some tips…how do you get hired wherever you want to work? It seems like everywhere you move, you seem to find a good job. I live in LA, and I cannot find a job at all!! I bet if you moved here, they’d hire you in an instant. Any advice?
Cereal and eggs? In one bowl? I need to hear more about this!!
Noooo Crocs! Haha.
I used to judge the Crocs but my roommate wears them when she’s baking, as she just graduated from Pastry School. She rocks orange crocks! And I dig them now!
Ba far one of the best quotes I’ve ever read. So much truth in it about
things that people seem to easily forget. Definitely words to live by.
I was the same as you with Crocs, I swore I’d never wear them – but then I wore my husbands around the house and I was hooked. I got my own pair and I have to admit, I wear them a lot. I bought a pair of their less-ugly sandals a few years ago too and they are just as comfortable. I think I’m at that age where comfort is overriding fashion….not totally, but I sure have my moments. It’s a great part of growing up ๐
My yoga teacher wears crocs, I saw her with them on one day when I got to the studio and I told her to hold on to them tight, they might disappear, lol! I also told her I may find another yoga studio to go to, I had to torture her a little!
They look so fugly but yeah I know they are comfy!
Gina,
I’ve been your reader for a few years and never commented before. So today, I’m going to be as your post here suggested — believe in the world being on my side. Your posts are always inspiring and I love them all. But this one today, as if it’s directly speaking to me ๐ Thank you!
Btw- I just bought the Turbo Fire DVD set yesterday, even though i’ve never done anything like it. I’ve been an avid runner and bikram yogi for years, and added body weight strength training into my routine in the last year. But I am missing something — fun is what i needed to incorporate into my workout routine. This is going to be a good one!
Crocs were perfect for deployments, and I still wear them when I go swimming at the gym. They ARE ugly, but I think they serve a good purpose as good whatever/water shoes. Just don’t wash them in super hot water… Mine seem to have shrunk.
I wear crocs whenever I go canoeing… they’re perfect because they float if the canoe tips over! ๐
Oh yeah-crocs sexi flip…get a pair and you will NEVER wear any other flip flops! They are secure on your feet-definitely good for carrying babies around, too! ๐
Haha, I also think crocs are super-ugly/super-comfy. I do have 2 traditional pairs for gardening and a pair of sandal-like high-heeled ones (best thing to go travel with and not get blisters from all the walking around).
A few weeks ago I bought a pair of Crocs ballet flats — in leopard print! They always make me laugh because it is such an juxtaposition of “I am a really ugly plastic shoe but I try to be sexy you might not notice”. Nevertheless, most comfortable flats I have… ๐

john mayer’s new cd just came out and there’s a song called “something like olivia” and it’s definitely worth a listen. probably a song that will be sang about your liv in a matter of years ๐
I wish we had outdoor water aerobics here. When I go down to AR and visit my grandma, we always go and I love it! Working out in the heat while staying cool is always a fun way to enjoy outdoor summertime fitness. Maybe you could post a pool workout for those to do at home or in their own pool who don’t have access to a water aerobics type class? I’d love to see that!
My husband got Crocs to wear around the house. He swears they are so comfy. He says he’s gonna get me a pair and I said no way. I’m afraid I may like like them (then find myself wearing them places other than home!)
I have a pair of bright pink Crocs. I love them…but I only wear them at home!
Love the Christian Larson quote so much! I have the magnet on my fridge.
You wot catch me hating on crocs! Yes, they are ugly, but so so so comfortable. I have incredibly flat feet, and am prone to shin splints, one of my legs is 12mm shorter than the other as well, so I need to wear a heel lift in my shoes, or my back gets all sorts of funky. I use my crocs as my “Around the house shoes” since going barefoot isn an option. I even have 2 pairs of crocs…a traditional pair for when it’s warm and a fleece lined paid for when it is cold. I will add…I never wear them out of the house…
I am LOLing at the crocs! My husband has come down with some serious foot/leg pain since we bought our new house, long story short the doc said it was from the hard wood floors and that he needs TO WEAR CROCS AT ALL TIMES AT HOME! I was horrified by this prescription. He went out and bought CAMO CROCS. Sorry for the all caps, but you must feel my pain! He friggen loves them, and they have really helped him. Last week he wore them with socks. And shorts. Outside. In front of people! The horror! Is there a divorce option for a husband with camo crocks & socks? Good thing he’s so cute…
Aren’t Crocs so comfy? I bought a pair in college (I went to an all women’s college so day-to-day everyone kind of looked like a slob) to wear back and forth to the gym. After I moved to NYC I thought I had retired them, but I’ve recently started wearing them around my apartment instead of slippers and there’s been a few times where I almost head out wearing them. But I’m not ready to take that step quite yet!
I’d be the worst swim instructor in the universe. While I’m a good swimmer individually, there is no way I’d be able to pay attention to other people and myself too. So, if by some crazy chance I ever get asked to teach a swim class, don’t let your kids come to mine.
Crocs are acceptable if you are in a situation where you might have to hose off your shoes. My aunt who is a nurse wears them at work and my mom wears them for gardening. They are also acceptable on small children.
that salad looks awesome!!
I really want to take a class from you! I am sure all of the people there LOVED you!
Not sure if you are familiar with aqua shoes. If you go to speedo’s site and search “aqua shoes” you’ll get an idea of what I’m talking about. They have a soft mesh fabric cover/top. Super soft. It give nice traction on the pool bottom.
I always love the way your salad beasts look! I have tried my hand at making awesome salads, but I can never seem to find the right dressing. All the low calorie ones are much too tart or bitter for me. Do you think you could do a focus on about healthy salad dressings that you can both make and find in stores? I feel as though people always think salads are the healthier options and then load on the Ranch!
Not all crocs are ugly. They make some more affordable semi cute styles like ballet flats, and some more expensive pumps. I have a few pairs of ballet flats that I wear to work all the time and love them! I was greatful for the Mary Jane Crocs when walking around in Europe. Check out their website-they have some cute stuff.
