Seaweed and chocolate
Hey everyone! Happy humpday!!! My favorite day of the week, which is usually Indian Food day, but alas, weโre not having Indian tonight. I had to book some extra training appointments today and tonight since weโll be out of town this weekend, so Iโll be working at the gym instead of feasting on Baigan Bharthaโquite worth it, Iโm SO EXCITED for our trip! I was getting homesick like you read about.
This morning, I had an unusually delicious sludge:
Hemp milk, frozen nanner, 1 tbs almond butter, raw cocoa powder (from One Lucky Duck), sea salt, Stevia, vanilla, cinnamon and that Vega stuff I really like. I was worried how my favorite almond butter, chocolate, banana combo would work with the smoothie infusion since the ingredients are pretty unique (yellow pea protein, organic hemp protein, organic sprouted flax seeds, organic brown rice protein, organic green food blend -spirulina, organic wheat grass, organic alfalfa grass, organic barley grass, organic spinach, organic sprouted broccoli, organic kale, organic kelp, organic dulse-, inulin (from chicory root), natural flavors, xanthan gum) but it was AMAZING! Thatโs what I like about the Vegaโฆ itโs pretty flavorless, so you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. Just donโt mix it with peaches ๐
Dessert:
I went to Wizzle โinstead of Target because that place has a knack for robbing me- to get a couple of last-minute things for our trip. I also picked up this book:
Iโve seen this book floating around the blog world and have been way interested in reading it. Have you read โIn Defense of Foodโ? Will I love it?
For lunch, I made a blended salad using a version of Gena’s creamy zucchini soup.
It had a boatload of spinach, 1 cup water, 1/2 avocado, dill weed, sea salt, pepper, a little drizzle of flax oil, 1 clove of garlic, a heaping tablespoon of chickpea miso and chopped zucchini. A-freaking-mazing.
Well Iโm off to work, take these babies to PetSmart, pick up contact lenses (because I know one will rip/disappear while weโre on vacay), making spin and Zumba cds, then off to teach and train.
Iโll see ya tonight. Please have some Indian food for me!
Much love,
G$
Oh no!! I hope that you can get your Indian food fix a.s.a.p., since you can't do it tonight – hang in there!!
It will seem odd to look at your blog and not see Indian food today ๐ Hehe. I've read that book and I think you will like it, however, I think like many health-conscious people, you might not find anything "groundbreaking" in his message. It's really well done, but it didn't change my life. Just my two cents ๐ I'd love to hear what you think of it.
never read the book but im interested to see what you think about it!
I love the book! It got me so fired up about the food indusrty. I have read other things by Pollan and LOVE the way he writes. I hope you enjoy it! Have fun in AZ!
That is so fun that your trip is SO very close! I hope you have a blast (I know you will!!). I have read about 3/4 of In Defense of Food. I think its fantastic- it will just further reinforce your thoughts on healthy eating. Have fun with your clients tonight
I loved the book! The information he gives reinforces why it is important to eat whole natural food.
Alicia
Your shake looks great! Glad it turned out well. Hope you can sneak in a little Indian food somewhere in your day… it's wednesday- don't let it down ๐
In Defense of Food is one of my favorite books about food. Michael Pollan is an excellent writer and knows (or does his research well) what he's talking about.
I think you'll like it!
One of my BFF's and I are going to Indian tonight for a belated bday dinner. I will definitely be having Baigan Bhartha and will eat extra for you. ๐
that macaroon looks so yummy! hope you have a great time on your trip!!
I have officially finished your macaroons off! Darn! I tried to control myself, but the things were just pure bliss!!!
Hope you get soem Indian Food very soon girl!!!
Defense of food is awesome! Michael Pollan is a great writer and really knows his stuff. I went to a lecture of his last winter and he's basically a beast at analyzing the food industry.
Michael Pollan is such a great author!
Yum, I think I'm going to make that beautiful green soup tonight! Glad you get to go on a trip this weekend:)
i loved the book! I think you'll like it.
hope you have a good day even without the Indian ๐
that macaroon looks so good
I have not read the book yet but Mr. Pollan came and spoke at my work a while back and he is a very knowledgable guy and has some great ideas about food and how people should eat and purchase food, etc. He really addresses the social aspects as well.
From what I know about it and about you, I think you will love it! I need to get around to reading it myself ๐
glad you reminded me of this book, i just put in a request to get it from the library!
I'll probably get my days mixed up when I don't see the Indian food pics on your blog tomorrow! lol
Have so much fun on your trip home! I love AZ… do you ever drive to Sedona or is that too far away?
you will definitely like In Defense of Food, though I preferred Pollen's other book Omnivore's Dilemma.
Looking forward to your thoughts on it.
You will love In Defense of Food, have you also read the Omnivore's Dilemma?
I'm about to post about smoothie combinations, and I believe there are very few that DON'T work! That's why I love them so much, endless opportunities :-).
Unusually delicious is right.
I have read Pollan's books and while I agree with his perspective and I absolutely think that the food industry needs major revamping, I feel he fails to acknowledge some very pertinent problems with feeding our population – in that the lower 10% earners, which due to the economy is quickly becoming lowest 15% and higher, cannot afford to buy fresh foods. Bottom line. Without a the cheap corn products, they would not be eating. I definitely think some education and a push towards subsistence gardening would alieviate some problems, but we definitely need to think about making cheap enough food for everyone to eat. Additionally, if these 10-15% of people ate better, their health care costs (which usually they can't afford either) will lower, reducing the tax cost on everyone else.
I have a feeling that you will have the same reaction to In Defense of Food that I did – although a friend of mine raved about it and told me how it changed how she looked at food, etc, I didn't find it to be anything I didn't already know.
You appear to already understand the importance of eating mostly natural, whole foods, so I doubt you will come out of this book with new revelations – but it's definitely an interesting topic and perhaps still worth the read!
Do you use a blender or a juicer for your smoothies? It all looks yummy!
I may try a Zumba class tomorrow morning! I'm excited!
I've been in the book store so much the past few weeks and I always see that book but have never grabbed it. Can't wait to hear what you think, I might finally have to give it a try!
awww! I totally had today's Indian food for you!!! it was delicious and I wayyy overstuffed myself…but hey! it had been a while!! too bad my place doesn't have ww naan! I had like 3 pieces of plain! ha!
TAKE CARE G!
haha Target does that to me as well. Glad your shake turned out well
i read in defense of food in about 1.5 days last summer. it was amazing. i love his theories/thoughts on foods, and i was so enthralled with the book that i didnt put it down. let me know what you think of the book after reading it! have a great time on vaca.
I've been checking out your blog for a couple months and noticed your macaroons… What recipe do you use? Is it from a book or is it your own? I tried searching your blog but didn't find any info… If you don't mind sharing hit me up at:

Thanks!

I just started reading that book! So far, I find it very interesting. Let me know what you think!
I actually just purchased this book and started it immediately. I'll read the Omnivore's Dilemma afterwards. So far – so good! It completely goes along with what I feel about food.
Actually just started reading/ listening to the audio of this book last week. Like a lot of the comments have mentioned – nothing groundbreaking but interesting enough. Good confirmation if anything?
Hope you have a fab wknd away! Love the blog – esp. the food combos and recipes!
Glad your smoothie turned out well!
I'm officially a dork- I just got mad excited to see how you combined seaweed and chocolate, lol! It sounds like the veg version of that chocolate covered bacon, haha.
Have a great trip ๐
I loved this book! My dad's reading it now
…Will you be posting your Zumba playlist? ๐
I've read the Michael Pollan book ~ I picked it up at the airport and read it on the plane. I really enjoyed it, though I didn't learn anything from it that changed my habits (Natalia took care of that for me!).
What did you think of Life Force Energy once you'd finished it? It's still my favorite!
I've been wanting to read that book for a while, too. Let us know what you think!
In Defense of Food, along with another book Real Food and the movie Food, Inc changed my entire way of eating, and as a result changed my life. I feel better than I have in a long time and my weight has stabilized.
I think you will love it!
I just picked up In Defense Of Food as well! I can't wait to read it, I have heard many good things about it!
I'm reading Pollan's other book : The Omnivore's Dilemma. It's very interesting. A lot of the same ideas as Food, Inc. I've got In Defense of Food and will reading it next. Let us know what you think.
Reading through the comments it is absolutely *blowing my MIND* that people are saying nothing in In Defense of Food was that ground breading to them. It's not a diet book and Pollan is not attempting to tell us what to eat- in fact he states this more than once. But come one people! So much detail on how our nutrition and food science research has been administered; research dating back to the 1930s before the western diet had literally reached all corners of the world?!
This book did indeed change my views on human nutrition, research, and life in general. Really looking forward to hearing your review.
