Clean with Journey

Heyyyy 😀 Happy humpday! Hope you’re having a wonderful day.

I had a fueling and filling bfast before starting the day’s insanity.

bfast

2 egg whites with a package of organic steamed broccoli, sautéed with onions, garlic and topped with red chili pepper flakes

egg

And 1/2 cup oats cooked in water with banana, vanilla and lots of cinnamon

oats

It was pretty face-rocking and felt super satisfied and ready to clean the casa, since I *haaaaate* leaving for vacay with a less-than-sparkling house.

Pandora’s Don’t Stop Believlin’ channel gave me some sweet 80s classics to rock out to 😉

pandora

Lurve. I may or may not have busted out some dance moves 😉

I met Jeni at the gym for some legs (we did about 45 minutes of lunges, hamstring curls, calf raises, weighted plie squats and leg extensions) and then came home for a light green protein smoothie

sludge

1 cup almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior and 1/2 t of spirulina

I took the puppers on a walk, did some laundry, trained a client and then it was lonchi time.

Enter the beast:

beast

This salad beast was my dream come true.

-spinach

-tomatoes

-bell pepper

-raw bloomin’ onion bread

-onions

-balsamic

-raw goat cheddar

-sea salt

-pepper

-chili flakes

-foodgasms

Ahhhhhmazing!

I went back to the gym for another training appointment and am about to get ready for Zumba and pilates. Flight medicine called back with my blood test results from yesterday- everything is excellent 8) I got the blood tests taken because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t deficient in anything and to check my blood type, cholesterol and all that mumbo jumbo. They said I wasn’t deficient in anything (which didn’t surprise me because I stuff my face with fruits and veggies all the livelong day) and that my triglycerides, LDL, HDL, CDC were all above the “good” ranges (my bad cholesterol was 60, when below 130 is good and triglycerides were 45 when below 150 is good). Wahooo! I feel triumphant, like I got a good health report card or something, haha.

Well I’m out like sauerkraut!

-Pilates

-Zumba

-Training sesh

-Targizzle for my beloved eyeliner

Praying the pilot surprises me with Indian takeout, since I’m not cooking tonight 😉

Have a great day <3

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: Are you more of a weights lover or cardio fanatic?? I used to be a cardio-only girl (back in the hardcore dancing days), but fell in love with weight training once I started to get into it. It fascinated me that weight training helped to change the appearance of my body, but also made me a stronger and better dancer. Now, I love both, but I could still do cardio all day 🙂 Days like today (legs day!), I still need a little push to weight train instead of sticking to cardio, but the results are way worth it.

COngrats on the good blood work!!!!!! Your salad beast looks extra yum today!!!!!

  2. Lauren on January 6, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Wow-that is great on the blood work. One of my new years resolutions is to find a doctor in my area and get that done as well. That is really great news. Your salad looks awesome!

  3. Tracy on January 6, 2010 at 4:20 pm

That salad looks amazing and made me super hungry for one. And I loooove Journey…the fiance actually proposed to me at a Journey concert. 🙂

  4. Suzanne on January 6, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Weights all the way, unless it’s incidental cardio like dancing, mock dueling with spatulas instead of wands, sex, etc. Also, hell yes to your nutrient and cholestral straight As.

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2010 at 4:33 pm

accidental cardio is the best 😀

  5. Sara on January 6, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I’m a weights girl alllllllllll the way. Shopping in high heels and finding extravagantly good deals on absolutely beautiful stuff in my size is my heartrate increasing cardio.
Three cheers for an amazing blood test result! 🙂

  6. Michelle on January 6, 2010 at 4:32 pm

we did a new dance in my zumba class last night, Plane to PR from Daddy Yankee, have you done that one yet? I love it! Congrats on your blood work!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2010 at 4:34 pm

no! i’ll download it now! thanks 😀

  7. Susan on January 6, 2010 at 4:36 pm

Yum cinnamon and oatmeal, love it. Well done on the blood results, that’s a great result you got. You’re right about the weights, you do get the good results from it but I could do cardio forever. Since I started focusing on doing weights last year, my body looks a lot more toned, treated myself to a Lululemon top, love their clothes. Here’s hoping you get a tasty Indian food later!!

  8. Paige (Running Around Normal) on January 6, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Congrats on the stellar health report card! Sounds like straight A’s to me 😉
I completely concur that is sucks to come back to a messy house. I’m def the same way!
Have a great night, and good luck on that Indian dish 🙂

  9. Lauren on January 6, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Out like sauerkraut? LOVE THAT! 🙂

What do you order when you get Indian food? I am a vegan, and never ordered it (I only eat it at the Whole Food salad bar.. and I Luuurrrve it!). I wanna order it sooon!

Nice job on all of the healthy cholesterol levels! I definitely balance both cardio and strength training. When I’m doing pushups are attending my body sculpting class, I always think I’d rather be running. When I am running and get tired, I think of how much easier strength training is. Basically, I like the pain that I’m not putting my body through at the time!

  11. rachael on January 6, 2010 at 4:54 pm

I am a yoga girl:) I like some cardio especially in the form of outdoor activities. I’ll do a little weight training from time to time but yoga has done wonders for my strength and muscle tone.

  12. Leah on January 6, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Wow! Congrats on the bloodwork results – thats awesome!

Im totally a cardio girl. I try and do weights a few times a week just because I know I should – but I get bored so easily!

  13. Heather @ The Joyful Kitchen on January 6, 2010 at 5:00 pm

i love weight training for the same reasons 🙂 it’s just so cool how you can change your muscles just by doing different things with them!

love the egg-thingy at the beginning…eggs + broccoli = LUV

  14. Whitney @ Lettuce Love on January 6, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Congrats on the healthy report card! I used to be a cardio junkie — I could elliptical, run, walk, and bike forever. Now I balance it out. I love weights and yoga in addition to cardio.

  15. La on January 6, 2010 at 5:07 pm

It totally IS like a report card- the most important report card about your health. Yay for an awesome one!

Before about four months ago, I honestly never worked out. I trained as a classical vocalist for many years, and during that time I felt like my hours of training per day really worked me (and I was in AMAZING shape — I was also in high school haha). Four months ago I got back from Thailand and I couldn’t stand how flabby I felt. Visually I know I wasn’t flabby but I felt so soft all over, a very big change from the toned muscles I’d always had while singing. Honestly, I ended up signing up for a Pilates class after reading about Pilates in a wedding magazine – it billed it as low impact and I’ve never really been great at high impact physical activity (very uncoordinated, slow, blah blah…the truth is I was just a weakling) so I thought it would be awesome. I fell in love after my first class and I go to an hour mat class four or five times a week with a reformer/tower class a few times a month. Suddenly my body feels amazing, and I’m actually interested in branching out and trying other forms of exercise. I’d really love to start running, and eventually add weight training – my best friend is OBSESSED with how it makes her body feel. Your blog is such a nice inspiration for me on days when I’m feeling lazy 🙂

  16. Betsy Kleiger on January 6, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Oooh, I love eyeliner, what kind do you use??? I’m a spin fanatic, but know the importance of weights!

  17. Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather on January 6, 2010 at 5:18 pm

I used to be only cardio but now I’ve started to enjoy weight training much more. I think I was just intimidated with weights before but now since I’ve been educating myself I feel so much more comfortable going for some good strength training too.

  18. lindsey on January 6, 2010 at 5:22 pm

congrats on those blood work results, that’s awesome!

and i think my preference of exercise depends on what i’m doing…like i would rather play my beloved soccer than lift weights, but i would rather lift weights than run on a treadmill 🙂

  19. Aletheia on January 6, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Out like sauerkraut?! No way – I say “Out like a trout”! (Well…I guess sauerkraut is a bit more witty =P )

Congratulations on your stellar report card. 😉 I’m not surprised at all that your fats are in the superb range, but I’ve always wondered how other veggie-lovers get nutrients such as iron and B12? I know dark leafy greens boast iron, but you’d have to eat an insane amount to actually get your daily req. And as for B12, I know some people think that sea veggies provide this, but I’ve also heard that the B form in sea veg is actually an analog form which is not absorbed well by your body. Hmmm.

As for your cardio vs weights question : I love it. I had been thinking about it all day today! I’m a cardio-junkie, and I know I should start integrating weights into my routine, but it’s SO HARD to get out of the mentality of weights not being a good work-out. Maybe I ought to give it a try. 🙂

p.s. You’ve inspired me to sign up for Zumba class at my school this week!

  20. Jordan @ Salt Sweat Sugar on January 6, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    I’m totes a cardio girl!

I love rockin’ out to Journey!

  21. caronae on January 6, 2010 at 5:34 pm

I cannot leave for vacay with a messy house either! Which is funny because I am a really messy person most of the time. I like cardio a lot, but I try to throw in some strength once or twice a week, and lots of yoga 🙂

  22. Amanda on January 6, 2010 at 5:37 pm

I’m a cardio girl all the way. Weights freak me out and intimidate me to no end. Give me an elliptical or a step-aerobics class any day!

  23. Annie on January 6, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Gina, any tips for how to get more motivated for weights/strength training? I hit the gym about 4-5x a week, doing 30-60 minutes of cardio each time. I try and do weights at least twice but I *really* find it boring. Any suggestions??

  24. michelle on January 6, 2010 at 5:51 pm

“like I got a good health report card or something” ha that was a good one, lol. i was in the car yesterday and i was thinking about how i understand more about what my dad did in the airforce, he never really talked about it (except for the “stunts” they used to pull:)so this blog has helped me to get a better understanding of what he did.

  25. Chelsea on January 6, 2010 at 5:53 pm

I want to know what eyeliner you use too! I’m always looking for the next great drugstore liner. Also, for anyone who thinks strength is boring, try circuits! I’m sure Gina can explain circuit training in greater detail (cue fitnessista), but basically it’s when you perform one strength exercise at a time and do as many reps as you can within a certain amount of time. I set up stations for each exercise and switch after a minute or two. You end up doing a lot more reps and fatiguing your muscles more…plus it goes by soooo fast!

  26. Lauren @ eater not a runner on January 6, 2010 at 5:54 pm

That salad looks YUM! I really have to push myself to weight train, I am definitely a cardio lover 😉

  27. Dawn on January 6, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I have been having a hard time trying to get down eggs for some reason but what you made looks really good. I will have to put that on my “must try” list.

  28. Erica on January 6, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Congrats on your awesome results! You ACED that test, girl! And you KNOW your diet has mucho to do with it. Yay you!!

You know I’m a cardio girl. Here’s the thing: I know I need to weight train. I know I would see huge differences in my body. I know it is so important since I am officially menopausal at the age of 31 :-S BUT: I just don’t get the “high” from strength training that I get from running. And I have so little time to devote to exercise anyway. That’s why I started running…I got the most workout in the shortest amount of time. Hard and fast, that how I roll 😉 Geez, that doesn’t sound good but ya know what I mean. LOL So in short, I NEED strength training motivation. Got any laying around you can give me?!

  29. Danielle (Coffee Run) on January 6, 2010 at 6:06 pm

    Congrats on the results 😀
I’d say I’m more of a cardio fanatic, but I like weight training too!

  30. Caroline on January 6, 2010 at 6:11 pm

I’m really more of a weights girl, but I’m trying to branch out with different types of cardio. I’m excited to start step and body attack next week!

  33. Jackie (Army Wife) on January 6, 2010 at 7:13 pm

I am a cardio only queen as well! I’m desperately trying to break that habit this year. In fact I made it a mini resolution to start before we get to our next duty station in the spring. I reason it would be in my favor to have stronger legs to hit the slopes when I get to the Rocky Mountains.

  34. Ashley on January 6, 2010 at 7:28 pm

I’m just like you — I love cardio and need a lot of pushing to get into strength training. Getting serious about strength training is one of my New Year’s resolutions, though — any advice you could offer on the subject would be much appreciated! 🙂

  35. Catherine on January 6, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I hate lifting weights – I think it’s because I feel like all of the men in the weight room are thinking, “What’s a girl doing in our area?” I then slink back to the cardio area and elliptical or treadmill my little heart out. Silly, I know, and I’ve resolved to lift more weights in 2010 because I love to feel (and look) strong. Thanks, Gina, for your move of the week!

  36. Gen on January 6, 2010 at 7:41 pm

    Hi Gina,

I just want to say thank you for giving us such an amazing blog!

I have a question–I am going to a huge company conference for an entire week next week–All meals are scheduled and basically no choices will be given to us. I know I can pack things for breakfast like oatmeal, bars, etc., but what do I do for lunch and dinner? I have to eat with the group, and I imagine that all of the meals served are not going to be what I typically eat. If the conference were a few days, I think I could handle it, but five days is a bit long for me… Do you have any advice? Any suggestions would be welcome! Again, love your blog!

    Gen

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2010 at 8:45 pm

      hey gen,
that IS a toughie. honestly, i would probably eat what you can from the dinner, and focus on talking to others rather than eating and then if you’re still hungry, have some backup options at the hotel for dinner, like soup, salad and salad/wrap fixins.
      hope this helps a little!
      xoxo

  37. Angela (The Lady Loves to Eat) on January 6, 2010 at 7:46 pm

I’m more of a cardio girl for sure. I love what lifting does to my body but most of the time the when I’m lifting weights i’m just thinking “man I really wish I was doing some cardio right now..”

  38. Heather on January 6, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Such an appropriate topic for me today! I will do cardio all the livelong day but hate strength work. I just talked to a trainer tonight at the gym and think I’m going to suck it up and make him work me out so I focus on that area also. Congrats on the good blood work!

  39. Gracie on January 6, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Hmmm, that’s a tough question. I love cardio – but only when it’s *fun* cardio (i.e. intervals, running/walking outside, DANCING, etc.). Weight training sucks while doing it, but there’s absolutely nothing like the results from a good strength training routine! I’m finally starting to see a difference in my body because of it, and like you said – I love feeling STRONG!

  40. fittingbackin on January 6, 2010 at 8:27 pm

I know it – my house must be clean before I leave – I HATE coming home to my mess! LOL I think I prefer cardio – I feel like I need to do it to not gain weight while ST I feel like it tones. And I like tone, but I like not gaining weight more. haha

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2010 at 8:44 pm

weight doesn’t matter, though. body fat matters! when my body fat is down, i “shrink” but weight more… don’t worry about gaining weight from pumping iron 😀

  41. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on January 6, 2010 at 8:36 pm

I love cardio, but will always be a weights girl. It has totally transformed my body. I used to be a little insecure about having so much muscle, but I LOVE it.

  42. LindsayRuns on January 6, 2010 at 9:28 pm

  43. Melissa S. on January 6, 2010 at 9:33 pm

and i’m def a cardio girl…weights bores me after about oh, 5 minutes.

  44. Jerilynne on January 6, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Woo on the good “health report card” =).

Your “something to talk about” couldn’t have been timed more perfectly — I was actually going to e-mail you about weight training today!

I don’t do ANY strength training at all even though I know that I should (and I want to). But I always feel so silly at the gym because I have no idea what I’m doing, especially now since it’s crazy crowded with all the new year resolution go-ers. Any tips on getting over that???

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2010 at 9:56 pm

      yes! the best tip:
NO ONE CARES IF YOU’RE THERE OR NOT!
so many of my clients are afraid of weight training because they’re afraid of what other people think. the thing is, people are usually so fixated on their own workouts that they won’t even look at you, or notice if you’re around. and if you’re doing something goofy (like jump squatting across the gym) no one will bat an eye.
as soon as you get out there, you’ll realize that all you need to worry about is yourself, and you’ll have a blast.

      • Jerilynne on January 7, 2010 at 7:58 am

Well I don’t think you’ll see me jump squatting across any gyms anytime soon, lol… but thanks Gina! That does help put things in perspective enough that maybe one of these days I’ll give the weights a try =) =).

  45. Amanda @ Cakes and Ale on January 6, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Craving some dal makhani and naan bread right now!

I am sooo a cardio junky. They labeled me at the gym! I do my weights, and I credit them with the transformation of my body, but I like my endorphine rush. It’s hard to wrap my mind around that weight doesn’t matter…when for years and years all you were concerned about was how much you weigh? It drives me insane, because when you have 2 people the same clothing size, and one weighs 140 (me) and the other weighs 125 (my friend) it’s frustrating..working on changing my thinking. I’d rather have more muscle anyway, for sure 🙂 sorry about the rant!

Hi Gina. I’m new to your blog. It was a suggestion on Google Reader since I subscribe to Oh She Glows & I gotta say, I like what I see so far :). Been following for a week or two. Love your posts on exercise & healthy eats.

But I gotta ask, what exactly IS a salad beast? I entered it in the search & came up w/loads of results/posts on your blog, but I’m curious to figure out exactly what it is, how it got its name “salad beast” & how to make a few of them…also, is Goddess dressing your own creation?

Thanks & keep up the great posts! Oh and I HEART Publix! It’s the best discovery I’ve made since moving to South Florida from the Midwest.

a salad beast is just what i call my salads because they’re large and beastly 🙂 usually i throw in whatever veggies i have and some goat cheese and top with seasonings and dressing. the goddess dressing is annie’s brand (you can find it at a lot of grocery stores and most health stores) and it’s amazing!!!
