Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

I love half marathons! 10Ks are fun too but I love the satisfaction of crossing the finish line after 13.1, it always feels like a huge accomplishment! The purple Garmin rocks!!!

  2. Brittany on April 3, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I’m just getting into running regularly (since January), and I haven’t completed any races yet…but I usually run 3-5 miles for training. This year, I will be completing my first 5K, 10K, and hopefully half marathon…so soon I will pick a favorite!

  3. Kimberly @ Healthy Strides on April 3, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I love the half marathon distance. The training is work but not a time suck like marathon training!

  4. Marilyn on April 3, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I love 8K’s because I feel like I accomplished a great distance without having to stress about it and over exert myself. Maybe with a Garmin I could go farther 🙂

  5. Heather on April 3, 2013 at 4:40 pm

I love a 3-4 miler. My knees and feet can’t take much more, unfortunately. I want the Garmin SO badly. My goal is to increase my strenght

  6. ElisaB on April 3, 2013 at 4:40 pm

My last two races have been half marathons but do enjoy the 10Ks more. Not sure if I will ever make the leap onto full marathons. Thanks for the giveaway!

I tweeted the giveaway as well!

  10. Brittany @ Kitchen::Candid on April 3, 2013 at 4:41 pm

One of my goals for 2013 is to run five 5k races! I’m no runner by any stretch but I’ve got a couch to 5k training app and so far it is really helping me build my endurance!

  11. Cara on April 3, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Somewhat random, but I love 6.5 miles! I live in coastal NH and there’s this great local loop with ocean views that winds through several small islands over bridges. It’s awesome! Great giveaway!

  12. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 4:44 pm

My favorite distance is 5 miles, probably because it reminds me of the turkey trot I used to do with my family in Tennessee before we moved. For some reason I always picture grown men in corn costumes as I’m running 😉

  13. 515TeachNRun on April 3, 2013 at 4:44 pm

For every day runs, I love 5 miles. Long enough to leave stress behind; short enough to still have a life. My favorite “race” distance is the half-marathon. Tried one full…not sure that is ever going to happen for me again 😉

  14. Megan on April 3, 2013 at 4:45 pm

I’m running my first half marathon in October so I’d love a Garmin. My favorite distance to run is 5 miles, it’s long enough to make me feel like I’ve worked hard but not so long I feel like I’m going to die 🙂

  15. Jessica on April 3, 2013 at 4:45 pm

My favourite distance is probably a 10k. I feel that it is long enough to push myself, but short enough so that I still feel refreshed while running (instead of feeling like I’m slogging through the remaining miles).

I love half marathons – just the right amount of training for a sense of accomplishment without the burnout of a full marathon.

  18. Molly@This Life Is Sparkling on April 3, 2013 at 4:46 pm

I really like half marathons. I ran three last year and am running my fourth next month!

  19. Rey on April 3, 2013 at 4:47 pm

I love 10K’s!! Perfect Saturday morning running distance!!

  20. Angela on April 3, 2013 at 4:47 pm

5 miles is my golden number but I am trying to bump that up!

  21. Randa on April 3, 2013 at 4:48 pm

I haven’t been running for too long, so a 5k is good for me! Would love to have a Garmin for my runs.

  23. Laura H on April 3, 2013 at 4:49 pm

I have only ever raced in a 5K, but I love to run to work out. I am too scared to run a 1/2 marathon. I get side aches all the time and what if it’s race day? Then I’m out my entrance fee and feel defeated? Maybe some day I’ll change my mind! Good luck to you!!!!!

  24. Jess on April 3, 2013 at 4:49 pm

Once my bum knee is back to one (functional!) piece, the half marathon is my favorite distance and next race!
My Grandpa used to say that you can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket… So here’s my ticket! 🙂

  25. Michelle on April 3, 2013 at 4:50 pm

I’m not much of a runner, but 5Ks are fun.

  26. Pattie on April 3, 2013 at 4:50 pm

I have gotten so I really like 5 miles. Not too long. Not too short.

  27. AL on April 3, 2013 at 4:51 pm

love 10 miles–not too too long, but enough to lose myself in it.

  28. Jan on April 3, 2013 at 4:52 pm

A 5K but I do an occasional longer one for favorite charities.

  29. meghan @ struggle muffins on April 3, 2013 at 4:52 pm

I love a good 10k as well and agree that they’re being eclipsed by all the half marathons and 5k runs out there. Also appreciate a 5 mile race, but those are few and far between as well. For casual runs, I like 7 miles – I like to get a good hour of running in and then I feel like I can tackle the day like a boss. 🙂

  31. Esther on April 3, 2013 at 4:52 pm

I’m not much of a runner, but I love going for long walks and hikes!

  32. Mary Helen on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I love to run between 3-5 miles a couple of times a week. In the past, I’ve run half marathons, but a 10k is a much easier distance to train/race.

  33. Hilary on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

5k’s cause their quick and dirty (hahaha), but I love a good outdoor workout like open watering swimming, downhill skiing or cross country skiing

  34. Liz on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I love the half marathon distance! I’m 8 weeks post baby and am starting to slowly increase my mileage. I’d love a Garmin to track my speed/distance!

  35. Lindsay on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I love 5Ks (but maybe that is because I am only a somewhat novice runner)! I am also a huge fan of outdoor boot camps in the nice weather. Tough, quick-moving, and fun- a perfect workout!

  36. Mary Helen on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I tweeted also 🙂 (my garmin is old and dying!!! )

  37. Justine on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

Recently have gotten more into running! Goal is to run a 10 miler.. I’m feeling pretty comfortable around 4-5 miles right now 🙂

  38. Kristen on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

    Love half marathons!

  39. Allison on April 3, 2013 at 4:53 pm

I started out running 5Ks, progressing to 10Ks. But it was an overnight relay (the Bourbon Chase – a 200 mile course, running along the Bourbon Trail in central Kentucky, completed by a team of 12) that motivated me to try a longer distance. I actually decided to train for a full marathon, and as part of my training schedule, I ran two half-marathons. Since then, I have run two more full marathons, and I have to say that half-marathons are my favorite! For me, it is long enough to be a challenge and require that I actually train for the race, but not so long that my training schedule totally consumes my fitness routine. Love your blog by the way!

  40. Ana on April 3, 2013 at 4:54 pm

I am not a runner, but I love long walks or ridding bikes! We went on a 13 miles bike ride last summer that was just awesome!

My favourite outdoor workout is likely a run/walk combo with random acts of fitness – push ups off of benches, crunches on tires, that sort of thing.

I want to love running and I am slowly getting there. Doing a 5 k charity run in three weeks.

  42. Rebecca on April 3, 2013 at 4:56 pm

I love running 5-6 miles – enough to feel like I got a great workout, but it takes less than an hour.

  43. Regina on April 3, 2013 at 4:56 pm

I’d love to say that I have a favorite running distance but as I’m new to running my answer is as far as I can go.
Right now thats not far at all but one day I want to run a half-marathon as well, maybe even a full!
    Good luck with your training!

  44. Toni on April 3, 2013 at 4:57 pm

I have run races of every distance up to five full marathons. I would have to say the half marathon is the perfect distance. You can push yourself to new limits and still feel great the day after your race! 🙂

  45. Tanner on April 3, 2013 at 4:57 pm

I like 10Ks the best! Just the perfect amount of race for me.

  46. Alyssa on April 3, 2013 at 4:57 pm

    I’m a 5k runner all the way 🙂

  47. Tanner on April 3, 2013 at 4:57 pm

  48. Debbie on April 3, 2013 at 5:00 pm

I’ve never ran a race! 5K has been my max on the treadmill, but I’ve felt very inspired this year to start running an actual 5K and 10K…and very hopefully a half marathon in the (near) future! I’ve been eyeing the Garmin Forerunner since you posted about it last year 🙂 My favorite non-running workout is doing outdoor bootcamp with a group.

  49. Dianna on April 3, 2013 at 5:00 pm

I’m new to running, so I’m focusing on 5ks. I am signed up for a 4 mile leg of a relay marathon though. 🙂
