Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ;)ย (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

Gina

I’m all about the 5k! I’m limited in my training time right now with a two month old, so working for speed allows me to maximize the time I have. Hopefully, when she’s a little older I can work on increasing distance.

I live in Minneapolis, and we have three beautiful lakes right next to each other that are each approx 5k. I adore running there, and it is hard to stop at just one! I find myself running 10k because I don’t want to stop! Perfect place to train for a half!

  4. Brookie on April 3, 2013 at 6:24 pm

    Just tweeted at ya:)

  5. Tiffany on April 3, 2013 at 6:24 pm

For me, six miles is the perfect run!!

  6. Megan on April 3, 2013 at 6:25 pm

I loooooove half marathons, but haven’t done one in over a year. I really want to start building up my distance again and a new Garmin would be the perfect motivation (I’m currently rocking a hand-me-down 201 circa 2006).

  7. Melodie on April 3, 2013 at 6:25 pm

10k is definitely my favorite race distance. But honestly, coming out of winter, i couldn’t pull off a10k with much pride right now. There would have to be some walking involved. I need to get my booty back out there!

  8. Karlee on April 3, 2013 at 6:26 pm

4-5 miles if i have a running buddy!

  9. Chloe GV on April 3, 2013 at 6:29 pm

    5 miles!!!

  10. anna maria on April 3, 2013 at 6:30 pm

  12. Caiti on April 3, 2013 at 6:31 pm

I’m training for my first half marathon so I’ll say that’s my favorite distance for now!!

  13. Maddie on April 3, 2013 at 6:33 pm

I love to run a good 6 miles. It’s challenging, but doable. I especially love to run when the wether is nice!!!

  14. Steph Z on April 3, 2013 at 6:35 pm

    Favorite distance: 10k

Favorite outdoor activity: running and hiking! Does a day at the beech count? hehe ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. LeeAnn on April 3, 2013 at 6:38 pm

Im a new runner, only running for 1 yr and just ran my 1st half marathon! So very excited! The Garmin would be a wonderful gift thanks

  16. Paula Czyz on April 3, 2013 at 6:39 pm

I really enjoy half marathons – they are long enough to be challenging but short enough that I don’t have to train too seriously, just a few long runs prior to the race. I am 13 weeks pregnant so I am not running right now but wold love to train for another half right after the baby is born. I wold love a Garmin to get ready for my post baby race ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way – I’ve gone back to read though your pregnancy posts, love how much of your experience you shared. It has been extremely useful thus far. Thank you!

    Oh and I tweeted ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Katie on April 3, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Hi Gina! I’m so excited about this giveaway. I’ve been researching Garmin’s for two weeks and love the 10 (purple is fantastic too). My favorite running distance is 10k. I recently did a shamrock shuffle and KILLED it. Pumped for spring weather (I’m in WI) finally and looking forward to training for my FIRST marathon!!

  18. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 6:42 pm

    10k is my favorite!

  19. Rachael on April 3, 2013 at 6:42 pm

My favorite is a 10k also. I am training for a 1/2 marathon this summer.

  20. Tina on April 3, 2013 at 6:44 pm

I am a non runner, but my favorite outdoor exercise by far is horseback riding!!!

  21. Michele on April 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I am a newbie runner and really like the 5K distance. I have run 4-6 miles here and there too, but I am very confident with the 5K distance and like that it doesn’t seem as crazy/unbelievable as before!

  22. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm

6-7 miles is my favorite. Long enough but not too bad!

  23. Mandy Kirk on April 3, 2013 at 6:46 pm

5k but am working up to more!
    Mandykirk@gmail.com

  24. Bernadine on April 3, 2013 at 6:46 pm

I love five mile runs. It’s long enough to have a nice sweaty workout. But short enough so that you can get it in less than 1 hour!

  25. jenna on April 3, 2013 at 6:47 pm

I love half marathons. I have not done onein a long time but i hope to build up to one this fall

  26. Danielle R. on April 3, 2013 at 6:49 pm

I love 5ks but would like to try a 10k!

  27. Sam on April 3, 2013 at 6:49 pm

I ran a 5k once and I loved it, but I don’t think running is for me. My favourite outdoor workout is probably just going for a long walk on a nice day. Nothing beats that and it’s a great way to wind down after a stressful week at work!

  28. Kristen on April 3, 2013 at 6:55 pm

My favorite running distance is the half marathon. I have only finished two of them, but I am hoping to run another in the Fall.

  29. Tammy Cox on April 3, 2013 at 6:55 pm

I tend to just run 5k distance because that is all I have time for but I would love to work up to a half. I am scared of the training involved though.

  30. Danielle on April 3, 2013 at 6:56 pm

I always said that 10k was the longest distance I would do (I don’t *love* running) but then I ran a 10K recently and it wasn’t so bad so now I’m seriously considering a half marathon.. just to see! So far, 10ks are my favourite though!

  31. Tina B on April 3, 2013 at 6:56 pm

So far my favorite distance is anything without IT band pain, but my goal is to one day run a half and then a full! Thanks for the giveaway.

  32. Danielle on April 3, 2013 at 6:57 pm

PS. I just tweeted about this!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. kim on April 3, 2013 at 7:00 pm

I live in Western Pennsylvania and have been running in all kinds of crazy weather training for a half in May. Wind, snow, sleet, 19 degrees, you name it, I’ll layer up! But I’m thrilled the weather will be warmer by weeks end, in time for a 9 miler. My favorite distance is a 10K also, and would love the purple Garmin to track my runs (and weather?)

  34. Nikki on April 3, 2013 at 7:00 pm

My favorite distance is the 5k ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m training super hard this year so I can dominate all of the ones I have planned ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. Rhonda Nance on April 3, 2013 at 7:02 pm

I love running half marathons. Love the new Garmin!

  36. Nikki on April 3, 2013 at 7:02 pm

My favorite distance is the 10K. My goal is to do a half marathon this year, but I still prefer those 10k races.

  37. Morgan on April 3, 2013 at 7:03 pm

I’m not a runner (yet!) but I love to rock climb. My goal is to run 5k by June and 10k by September/October, and a device to track distance would sure be helpful!

  38. kelsey on April 3, 2013 at 7:04 pm

Call me lazy, but I love a 5k.

  39. Melissa on April 3, 2013 at 7:04 pm

I guess a 5k might be my favorite distance! I was training for a 10k and ready to sign up for one when I was hit with a piriformis problem last May and am just now getting back to running – training to do 8k and go from there!

  40. Holly on April 3, 2013 at 7:06 pm

I like 10 Ks. Long enough to get a workout, short enough to run FAST and to not have to overtrain.

PS I NEED A GARMIN soooooooooooooo BAD!

  41. Holly on April 3, 2013 at 7:07 pm

    I tweeted!

  42. Tara on April 3, 2013 at 7:07 pm

My favorite distance is a 10K! I don’t run more than a 5K ordinarily but I felt so accomplished when I completed a couple 10K races and didn’t immediately die afterwards!

  43. Miranda @ Miranda Runs on April 3, 2013 at 7:09 pm

I love 10ks! I’m building up for my half marathon in June! This watch would be PERFECT

  45. Jen on April 3, 2013 at 7:10 pm

My favorite outdoor workout is hiking! Every year I do a little running and try to love it, but it just isn’t for me.

  46. Leah on April 3, 2013 at 7:12 pm

    10k!

  47. Jayne Crabtree on April 3, 2013 at 7:13 pm

I’m a non-runner as of now aside from the elliptical, but I’m really wanting to get into running outdoors. The air is so much cleaner and fresh!

  48. keira on April 3, 2013 at 7:14 pm

I prefer swimming, personally! Running gets boring and tedious to me for some reason. When I do run, I do short sprints on the treadmill;P

  49. Nikki on April 3, 2013 at 7:15 pm

I’ve always wanted a Garmin… running holding my phone is getting verrrrry annoying!

  50. keira on April 3, 2013 at 7:15 pm

    I tweeted!
