Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ;)ย (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

5K is probably my favorite because it’s just short and sweet, but 10K is good for a challenge. I just had a baby in November, so I haven’t really run much since then, but I’m doing a 10K in July, so it’s time for me to start training too! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Megan on April 4, 2013 at 1:39 am

I love 10k races. Enough to push me, but not so long that I have to train a lot for them.

  5. AnneW on April 4, 2013 at 1:41 am

5 miles is my go-to running distance, but the occasional 8 miler feels soooo good!!

  6. Jasmine on April 4, 2013 at 1:42 am

I would love to start training for a half marathon. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but am a horrible runner. That will be my personal goal this year!

  7. Andrea on April 4, 2013 at 1:42 am

I’m with you, 10k’s are perfect!

  8. Kimberly on April 4, 2013 at 1:46 am

Love the garmin watch – I’ve been eyeing it for awhile! My favorite racing distance is also a 10k, but half marathons are fun too.

  9. monika on April 4, 2013 at 2:01 am

I’m not much of a runner/jogger ( I need some inspiration to start doing that) but I do love to ride my bicycle outside. It’s a good legs/tush workout while at the same time I can enjoy beautiful, serene scenery.

  10. Ash V on April 4, 2013 at 2:16 am

Well, I did a half back in October. Unfortunately, since then I’ve been a bit of a slacker and haven’t done more than 3. I’m working back into it now. For me, building up the first few miles
Is the hardest. I really like 10ks too. That’s my short term goal!

  11. michelle in alaska on April 4, 2013 at 2:26 am

    5k ๐Ÿ˜€

  12. Anna on April 4, 2013 at 2:50 am

My favorite are 5K’s ๐Ÿ™‚ and the occasional 10K and maybe 1 1/2 marathon every year or two!

  13. Michelle on April 4, 2013 at 3:02 am

I’ve never done a race before but I think I’d like to do a 10K. Anything more than that seems crazy for me, but major props to the marathoners (and halfers too)!

  14. Anni on April 4, 2013 at 3:25 am

5 miles is by far my favorite running distance ๐Ÿ™‚ Would love to win one of these for adding on more milage ๐Ÿ˜‰

  15. Jamie on April 4, 2013 at 3:29 am

I love a challenge, but I think hitting 6 or 7 miles on just a random day feels so good! Huge accomplishment ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Kelster on April 4, 2013 at 3:30 am

I’m a walker. I go on walks up to 8 miles. I like timing myself to see if I can beat previous times.

  17. Jen on April 4, 2013 at 3:32 am

I can’t call myself a runner yet, but I really want to be! I’d love to be able to smash out a 5km ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Jen on April 4, 2013 at 3:33 am

And I just tweeted! Good luck to everyone who enters ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Gina! My favorite would be 5K since I’m just starting, but I’d love to start challenging myself more. We have a trail by my home and this would be great to keep track of the distance!

  21. Lindsey f on April 4, 2013 at 5:10 am

I’ve only run 5k’s but would love to push myself to run a longer distance!

  22. kayla on April 4, 2013 at 5:21 am

my favorite running distance is probably between 3-5 miles. it’s just enough for me to feel like i got a good little workout out, but not past the point of taking tons of time to accomplish.

  23. Annette on April 4, 2013 at 5:30 am

I’m not a runner, but I love cycling.

  24. Annette on April 4, 2013 at 5:31 am
  25. Jess on April 4, 2013 at 6:05 am

I like 10ks too! I try to run a road race a month when the nice weather starts- I would love some extra motivation! ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. melissa on April 4, 2013 at 6:20 am

I really like four and five milers….. now those area hard to find!

  27. Susan on April 4, 2013 at 6:21 am

My absolute, 100% favorite are half-marathons. They challenge me without tearing up my body. Good luck in Tempe!!

  28. Katie on April 4, 2013 at 6:25 am

I am new to running, so my favorite so far is a 5k! lol But that 10k will be mine soon enough!
    Have a great day!

  29. Liza on April 4, 2013 at 6:37 am

I’m trying to find a Garmin with small watch – the last I tried on was really big on my little wrists: any recommendations ladies? Xx

  30. Stephanie on April 4, 2013 at 6:47 am

I’m new to running and finally feel comfortable with 5k. I’m just now starting to train for a half! This would be great for helping track my progress.

  31. Kristy H. on April 4, 2013 at 6:49 am

I am 10 weeks into training for my first half marathon. Excited but very anxious. I like running between 3-5 miles. I live in Michigan and it has been so cold, so all my training has been inside. 11 miles this weekend outside I hope.

  32. Jen on April 4, 2013 at 6:51 am

My favorite running distance is >8k <half marathon haha.

I like the distance where I feel like 1) I ran my heart out and 2) I look down to see how far I have ran and I tell myself "Holy cow! That is awesome" I like to surprise myself ๐Ÿ˜‰ – this happens from time to time at the ^^^ distances.

  33. Carrie on April 4, 2013 at 6:52 am

I’m loving the half distance right now. The whole 26.2 is in the back of mind trying to make entrance though. ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Jen on April 4, 2013 at 6:53 am

Oh hey and tweeted the above with an extra hashtag #livewithfire <<<< so awesome!

  35. Stephanie on April 4, 2013 at 6:53 am

My favorite running distance is probably a 10k. It’s challenging enough, but you don’t have to train as much as you do for a half.

  36. Molly C. on April 4, 2013 at 7:11 am

My favorite running distance is 5k — short and sweet!

  37. char eats greens on April 4, 2013 at 7:12 am

My fave distance is probably a half, but I’ve never run a 5k before, only a 10k. I like the longer distances (but not a full marathon yet! haha)

  38. Megan on April 4, 2013 at 7:14 am

I am trainv for my first 5k! Thanks soooo much for the opportunity!

  39. Julie on April 4, 2013 at 7:14 am

My favorite is the half marathon!

  40. Kristy @ Kristy's Health Revolution on April 4, 2013 at 7:18 am

My favorite running distance is apparently a 5k because I run it so often but I really enjoy a longer race.

  41. JP on April 4, 2013 at 7:20 am

    marathon

    I tweeted! @kristy_joy

  43. Katie on April 4, 2013 at 7:22 am

Probably 10k as well. I like the half marathon but have little motivation these days for much more than a 10k. Ebbs and flows, right?

  44. Melissa on April 4, 2013 at 7:22 am

I enjoy more short distance running, but I am trying to do some long distance. We’ll see how that goes….

  45. JP on April 4, 2013 at 7:23 am

    tweeted too!

  46. Emily on April 4, 2013 at 7:23 am

    I ran a 10 miler a while ago and I loved it!

  47. Caitlin on April 4, 2013 at 7:27 am

My favorite distance is a 5K!

  48. Megz on April 4, 2013 at 7:28 am

    16kms is my favourite ๐Ÿ™‚

  49. Emily on April 4, 2013 at 7:31 am

I am purely a recreational runner so about 3 miles is perfect for me to allow time for weights and other types of exercise.

  50. Amy Bouchard on April 4, 2013 at 7:36 am

I ran a marathon a few years ago, and after that running just seemed like a chore to me. Now I enjoy 10ks – 10 milers. You still need to prepare, but the shorter distance keeps running enjoyable as the stress is not there during the training:)
