Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ย (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo
Gina

Veteran’s Day half marathon recap
[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I like half marathon!
And i also tweeted ๐
5K is probably my favorite because it’s just short and sweet, but 10K is good for a challenge. I just had a baby in November, so I haven’t really run much since then, but I’m doing a 10K in July, so it’s time for me to start training too! ๐
I love 10k races. Enough to push me, but not so long that I have to train a lot for them.
5 miles is my go-to running distance, but the occasional 8 miler feels soooo good!!
I would love to start training for a half marathon. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but am a horrible runner. That will be my personal goal this year!
I’m with you, 10k’s are perfect!
Love the garmin watch – I’ve been eyeing it for awhile! My favorite racing distance is also a 10k, but half marathons are fun too.
I’m not much of a runner/jogger ( I need some inspiration to start doing that) but I do love to ride my bicycle outside. It’s a good legs/tush workout while at the same time I can enjoy beautiful, serene scenery.
Well, I did a half back in October. Unfortunately, since then I’ve been a bit of a slacker and haven’t done more than 3. I’m working back into it now. For me, building up the first few miles
Is the hardest. I really like 10ks too. That’s my short term goal!
5k ๐
My favorite are 5K’s ๐ and the occasional 10K and maybe 1 1/2 marathon every year or two!
I’ve never done a race before but I think I’d like to do a 10K. Anything more than that seems crazy for me, but major props to the marathoners (and halfers too)!
5 miles is by far my favorite running distance ๐ Would love to win one of these for adding on more milage ๐
I love a challenge, but I think hitting 6 or 7 miles on just a random day feels so good! Huge accomplishment ๐
I’m a walker. I go on walks up to 8 miles. I like timing myself to see if I can beat previous times.
I can’t call myself a runner yet, but I really want to be! I’d love to be able to smash out a 5km ๐
And I just tweeted! Good luck to everyone who enters ๐
I tweeted! https://mobile.twitter.com/kelster/status/319714068996960256
Hi Gina! My favorite would be 5K since I’m just starting, but I’d love to start challenging myself more. We have a trail by my home and this would be great to keep track of the distance!
I’ve only run 5k’s but would love to push myself to run a longer distance!
my favorite running distance is probably between 3-5 miles. it’s just enough for me to feel like i got a good little workout out, but not past the point of taking tons of time to accomplish.
I’m not a runner, but I love cycling.
Here’s my tweet: https://twitter.com/LooseBumm2/status/319744015526395904
I like 10ks too! I try to run a road race a month when the nice weather starts- I would love some extra motivation! ๐
I really like four and five milers….. now those area hard to find!
My absolute, 100% favorite are half-marathons. They challenge me without tearing up my body. Good luck in Tempe!!
I am new to running, so my favorite so far is a 5k! lol But that 10k will be mine soon enough!
Have a great day!
I’m trying to find a Garmin with small watch – the last I tried on was really big on my little wrists: any recommendations ladies? Xx
I’m new to running and finally feel comfortable with 5k. I’m just now starting to train for a half! This would be great for helping track my progress.
I am 10 weeks into training for my first half marathon. Excited but very anxious. I like running between 3-5 miles. I live in Michigan and it has been so cold, so all my training has been inside. 11 miles this weekend outside I hope.
My favorite running distance is >8k <half marathon haha.
I like the distance where I feel like 1) I ran my heart out and 2) I look down to see how far I have ran and I tell myself "Holy cow! That is awesome" I like to surprise myself ๐ – this happens from time to time at the ^^^ distances.
I’m loving the half distance right now. The whole 26.2 is in the back of mind trying to make entrance though. ๐
Oh hey and tweeted the above with an extra hashtag #livewithfire <<<< so awesome!
My favorite running distance is probably a 10k. It’s challenging enough, but you don’t have to train as much as you do for a half.
My favorite running distance is 5k — short and sweet!
My fave distance is probably a half, but I’ve never run a 5k before, only a 10k. I like the longer distances (but not a full marathon yet! haha)
I am trainv for my first 5k! Thanks soooo much for the opportunity!
My favorite is the half marathon!
My favorite running distance is apparently a 5k because I run it so often but I really enjoy a longer race.
marathon
I tweeted! @kristy_joy
Probably 10k as well. I like the half marathon but have little motivation these days for much more than a 10k. Ebbs and flows, right?
I enjoy more short distance running, but I am trying to do some long distance. We’ll see how that goes….
tweeted too!
I ran a 10 miler a while ago and I loved it!
My favorite distance is a 5K!
16kms is my favourite ๐
I am purely a recreational runner so about 3 miles is perfect for me to allow time for weights and other types of exercise.
I ran a marathon a few years ago, and after that running just seemed like a chore to me. Now I enjoy 10ks – 10 milers. You still need to prepare, but the shorter distance keeps running enjoyable as the stress is not there during the training:)
