Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ;)ย (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

I wanted to make sure I left another comment stating that I STILL love 10Ks and that I tweeted the giveaway as well ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks, Gina!

I love half marathons! I’m training for my first full right now and it’s really made me appreciate the half. 5ks intimidate me! I always pressure myself to go too fast.

  3. Lisa D on April 4, 2013 at 2:08 pm

I love 10Ks, they are long enough that they push me, but I don’t feel completely dead after. I keep signing up for half marathons and then realizing, around mile 3, that I HATE them – ha – but crossing that finish line makes it all worth it. I’m pretty injury prone, but one day I would like to tackle a full marathon. Maybe when I live in the suburbs (currently in NYC) and have more free time (aka am willing to give up dinners/going out to train) – one day!!

  4. Stacey on April 4, 2013 at 2:12 pm

My fave distance is the half marathon!!

  5. Sarah Fowler on April 4, 2013 at 2:12 pm

10ks! Just long enough that I feel like I’ve really accomplished something and just short enough that I am not all quibbly by the end. Can still have a great productive day.

My goal is twelve 10ks in 2013. I’ve done three so far, and my ones up to June are scheduled. But I am having a hard time finding any in Texas for the summer?? Might need to go to Minnesota or North Dakota. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Shannon on April 4, 2013 at 2:16 pm

My favorite running distance is a simple 5k! I’ll never forget the way I felt the first time I ran my first 5k – it was such a good feeling after all the hard work I put in (I was NOT a runner before!).

  7. Sarah Fowler on April 4, 2013 at 2:16 pm

    Just tweeted you!

My favourite distance to run is a 10k. It’s just a little more challenging the a 5k but not so exhausting as a half. I find training for a 10k a good push but not too demanding.
    Happy training!

  10. Anna - Piper's Run on April 4, 2013 at 2:24 pm

    And I tweeted you! Cheers.

  11. Alejandra De Angulo on April 4, 2013 at 2:30 pm

I have to agree with you my favorite distance is 10K. Is short enough so you don’t get too tired and can use the rest of the day , you don’ feel miserable after it but you still feel you accomplished something. A 10k is long enough to get you in “the zone”, but not so long that you have to suffer to finish it. I like the 10K because it is easy to maintain a good steady pace and since it is not so long you don’t need to stop to refuel .

My second choice would be a half. It is challenging enough but it is not so hard that it makes you want to quit.

I have done several full marathons… don’t ask me why… is just a little bit of craziness and addiction to pain. But every time, I feel 26.2 is way to much…. 20 miles are OKAY, but those last 6.2 are miserable.

5ks feel too short, as soon as you start getting in your rhythm… the race is over… ๐Ÿ™

  12. Kristi Carlson on April 4, 2013 at 2:31 pm

I’m usually a marathoner, but I did a 10k last year and LOVED it! It’s the perfect distance that allows you to take your speed up a notch while still maintaining a good level on the fun-o-meter.

    I retweeted!

  14. Deanne on April 4, 2013 at 2:33 pm

I like half marathons. Challenging, yet doable. Training for my first full right now and could really use the Garmin Forerunner 10, especially in my favorite color, purple!

  15. dorry on April 4, 2013 at 2:36 pm

oh my goodness – purple is my favorite color! I loved racing half marathons in the past, but my favorite everyday distance is 5 miles. great workout, but doesn’t leave me super tired the rest of the day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Amanda on April 4, 2013 at 2:37 pm

My favorite distance is the half-marathon. Long enough to not have to ‘sprint’ but not a marathon!

  17. Angela Davis on April 4, 2013 at 2:37 pm

I love the 10K distance. It’s a challenge if I havent trained, but also an awesome one to PR on if I do train.

  18. Katie @baking and swimming on April 4, 2013 at 2:40 pm

    I love half-marathons, but I also love 15ks!

  19. Katie @baking and swimming on April 4, 2013 at 2:41 pm

    I tweeted!

  20. Sara on April 4, 2013 at 2:50 pm

Favorite distance is probably also a 10K. Enough to get you good a sweaty, but nothing you have to train super hard for. ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Jen A on April 4, 2013 at 3:01 pm

So far I’ve run many 5k’s, 1 10k, and 1 half marathon. I think I like the 5k’s the best because they don’t require as much training and planning, its so much easier to sign up for one a month away and still be able get some decent training in!

  22. Lauren S on April 4, 2013 at 3:02 pm

Since I’m a new (again) runner, a 5k is my favorite. I’m still trying to work my way up to longer runs again.

  23. Haley on April 4, 2013 at 3:05 pm

My favorite running distance is any distance I can get outside and commit to. I feel great after I run but sometimes it is so hard to start on days you know you are running 6 miles etc.

  24. Katrina on April 4, 2013 at 3:05 pm

My favorite distance is the half-marathon, because it’s the first race I ever ran! Coming from someone who couldn’t run a mile when I started, those 13.1 miles gave me so much confidence.

  25. Haley on April 4, 2013 at 3:06 pm

i tweeted and now following you on twitter! Hope I win!

  26. Katrina on April 4, 2013 at 3:06 pm

    Tweeted it as well!

    10ks ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Marisa on April 4, 2013 at 3:25 pm

I’m not hugely into running long distances, but when I’m in the mood to be outside I’ll do some sprints mixed with power walking. Mixing it up helps to fight the boredom ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Marisa on April 4, 2013 at 3:27 pm

    Just tweeted ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Carolyn Moore on April 4, 2013 at 3:31 pm

Well I am new to running and have only done a few 5Ks which I enjoyed, but am crazy and signed up for a half. Unfortunately sickness and injury has been sidelining me, but i still have time to keep training. I’m hoping that a half marathon will be my favorite distance and a free Garmin would be awesome for the training runs!!

  31. Carolyn Moore on April 4, 2013 at 3:32 pm

    I tweeted ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Jordan K on April 4, 2013 at 3:34 pm

I love 10k’s too! They are the perfect distance, but you’re right, there are hardly any 10k’s around these days! ๐Ÿ™

  33. Abi on April 4, 2013 at 3:35 pm

Half marathons are the perfect distance!

  34. Kim on April 4, 2013 at 3:35 pm

10k’s are my favorite too! Perfect distance to feel like I’ve accomplished something, but training for it isn’t too time consuming.

  35. Tracy on April 4, 2013 at 3:42 pm

Right now a 5K is my favorite distance! I have a 1 1/2 year old at home and am expecting my second. Since my first baby I have ran 2 half marathons and many more before the kids came into the picture, however, right now that seems like a very long ways!

  36. rachel on April 4, 2013 at 3:44 pm

    1/2 marathon for sure!

  37. Erica on April 4, 2013 at 3:49 pm
  38. Andrea on April 4, 2013 at 3:49 pm

As pathetic it sounds 4 miles is my favorite distance, Its a decent workout, doesn’t take too much time and I dont want to die after!

  39. Erica on April 4, 2013 at 3:50 pm

13.1 is my favorite, it is hard enough, but isn’t overwhelming for training. 5ks seem like a waste of time. 26.2 takes too much time training. I haven’t ever trained for a 10k but that might be a good distance too.

  40. Adrienne on April 4, 2013 at 3:52 pm

5 milers I think are my favorite- long enough to be a challenge but short enough to be able to go fast!

  41. Becky on April 4, 2013 at 3:52 pm

I really loved running my first half marathon, it was such an accomplishment so that has been my favorite distance! I decided I am going to run our local half here in November and I can’t wait to start training again!! This watch would be so helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. Amy on April 4, 2013 at 4:04 pm

I love half marathons-I just did my 3rd this weekend, and improved my time by 20minutes! I feel like it’s long enough that I have to train, but short enough that the training doesn’t take over my life. And with that, I’m about to go do 6miles!

  43. Kaitlin on April 4, 2013 at 4:17 pm

My favorite distance is also a 10K! Good luck training! ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. Beth on April 4, 2013 at 4:21 pm

I love the 8K/10K distance. I’ve done one half-marathon and that was enough for me. Training for the 8K/10K distance doesn’t require as much of my (precious) free time, but still requires some sort of training commitment from me. Can’t wait for the weather to finally warm up here so I can get outside again!

  45. rachel on April 4, 2013 at 4:22 pm

I like four to six miles on a weekday night…enough to make me feel active!

  46. Meghan @ After the Ivy League on April 4, 2013 at 4:24 pm

So far in my short running career my favorite distance is the 5k!

  47. Meghan @ After the Ivy League on April 4, 2013 at 4:25 pm

    I tweeted about the giveaway!

  48. Michelle on April 4, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Right now- I love the 5 miler, although there aren’t many races for that distance. Before I got pregnant, I loved long Saturday morning 10 milers. They are way more enjoyable when they are not part of a training program/race, though!

  49. kathy wright on April 4, 2013 at 4:37 pm

I love to be outside and just run. It is such a freeing feeling. I enjoy mature and the sights around me. I try to run at lest 10 miles a week. I ran a 10k with my son in law and daughter . He and I had a bet going and we tied! So we have a re match next Thanksgiving. ! When I race it is usualy for a cause.

  50. Rachel on April 4, 2013 at 4:41 pm

I have been loving 10ks lately but I am trying to get into longer distances! I would love a garmin for my upcoming HIM training.
