Make it happen

Hey! How was your weekend? Anything exciting happen?

We had an awesome, restful and low-key weekend over here. Yesterday, the Pilot told me to go get a massage (twist my arm, eh?) and it was probably the best I’ve ever  had- my hair is still greasy from the oils, haha. After my experience with prenatal massages (which feel like a tickle to me, I like deep tissue), it was especially amazing. We ended the weekend with dinner at Acacia:

Acacia 2

(one side of the restaurant is entirely windows- from our table you could see the beautiful city lights)

We always eat at the same rotation of restaurants, because we’ve found what we like and stick with the classics. Usually when we try something new, we love it- Tucson has a surprising amount of locally-owned, insanely amazing restaurants.

Acacia’s focus is real food, so they source all of their produce from Arizona, have a seasonal menu and buy organic whenever possible. I didn’t a lot of meal pics since it was date night, but we had salad, calamari, sourdough bread, I enjoyed the halibut (with a fennel sauce, spinach and tomatoes)

NewImage

and the Pilot had the slow-cooked pork. We’ll definitely be back, especially since they have a tasting menu with wine pairings we’d love to try.

This morning, we’re meeting some friends for breakfast.

Cereal to hold me over + coffee:

Hope you all have a very happy Monday!

See ya later today on the Fashion page 🙂

xoxo

We missed the boat on reserving a condo, since it took a while to get our work schedules in sync for a vacay, so I’ll be calling hotels this week and getting everything ready to go. I can’t wait to take Liv to the beach for the first time!

This will be such an amazing experience. Livi holding her toes in the ocean for the very first time.
    It makes me all sentimental…:-)

  2. Tammy on June 25, 2012 at 12:08 pm

Have you tried VRBO.com for condo rentals? My husband and I have used this site twice for condo rentals in Hawaii, but they have locations all over the world. The prices are great with a wide range to choose from.

    • Alexis on June 26, 2012 at 1:01 am

I just read an article in a recent magazine (I think Real Simple??) about how these rental websites like VRBO and HomeAway are the new hot way to travel! I live in Hawaii and keep telling my husband we should sign up for a house swap site:)

i’ve been trying vbro and everything is booked already! will look into home away- thank you!

I can’t wait to see a pic of little Liv in the ocean! I bet she’ll love it 🙂

Your pilot is so swoon-worthy, what a fabulous husband/daddy he is!

Glad you had a great weekend. I look forward to hearing more about that wine-tasting menu!

San Diego sounds like a lovely holiday destination! I love that you and the Pilot are so regular with your date nights. I’m still rocking single lady status but when I eventually do get married, I’m making it a mandatory requirement! 🙂

  5. Shaina on June 25, 2012 at 12:19 pm

san diegooooo!! The reason I love living in CA so much. Tripp’s first time at the beach was in Carlsbad a few weeks ago. 🙂 He didn’t exactly go in the water but it was still fun.

  6. Amy on June 25, 2012 at 12:21 pm

My elliptical has a a HITT/max cardio setting. I did 45 min. (I usually do 50) instead of the 30 because of the cake and candy consumption yesterday. We took a trip up the CA coast 3 years ago and started in San Diego. Feel free to email me if you want some tips, but a major one is to take the ferry to Coronado. We hit the Farmer’s market there (among other things) and shopped for the rest of our road trip!

p.s. I’m not following the SSU make plan, but I am making your coconut chicken curry tonight!

I live in San Diego!!! There are soo many great places to stay, eat and workout! Feel free to email me if you need any recommendations 🙂

I only had time for the HIIT this am and will squeeze the rest in later in the day!! WHEWWW. did it on the escalator of death….or stairclimber. sweaty mess by the end!!

  13. jodie on June 25, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue but the link for the summer shape up is not working for me.

  14. Jess on June 25, 2012 at 12:47 pm

I love when you review Tucson restaurants, because I’m a grad student at UA. Have you tried Pasco on University? They make delicious food & cocktails with local ingredients. (I don’t work there or anything, I swear; I just thought you might like it. I recommend the quinoa super food bowl!)

  15. Brittany on June 25, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Absolutely nothing exciting happened this weekend. I lost a very dear friend of mine to cancer last night so my weekend and week are pretty grim. But I’m going to my grandmas for dinner tonight and my little cuzzies come for a visit next week.

  16. Sana on June 25, 2012 at 12:52 pm

I can’t wait to see the pics of Livi at the beach!!!

  17. Kayla on June 25, 2012 at 12:57 pm

Gina, make sure you check out Hotwire! They offer GREAT last-minute hotel deals. My hubby and I scored a 3.5-star, $130 room for $65 for our anniversary by booking about a week in advance. 🙂

  18. Angie on June 25, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Yes i second the VRBO site. They are amazing. But if you plan to go and use them, go in late summer early Sept. You will get a good deal. Look up the Mission Beach/Pacific Beach area. LOTS of great condos on the water. I am from the mission beach area and used VRBO last year when we went to SD last summer. SOO worth it. our house was right on the Bay. 😀
Oh man Livi is going to love the beach. Too bad you guys cant PCS there. I wish we could…countdown till retirement and move to FL is on. 😀 i live for the beach. Being from SD you cant help it.

You should check out the Hillcrest Farmers market. THey are amazing.

  19. Krysta on June 25, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Try Airbnb for house/condo rentals. I’ve used it traveling in the US and abroad (and even used it to rent out my apt in NYC) with great success.

  20. Crystal on June 25, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Gina, what beach(es) do you like in SD? I was there last week and only had time to check out Coronado, and I wasn’t too impressed.

  21. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 25, 2012 at 1:24 pm

a tasting menu with wine pairings sounds like a whole lotta fun! hope you guys get to go back and enjoy!

Massages are awesome. Acacia sounds like a fantastic restaurant – so glad you enjoyed!!

  23. Britt on June 25, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I did week three weights today and my booty is already a little sore !

  24. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on June 25, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Relaxing weekends are the best sometimes– how sweet that the Pilot told you to go get a massage! That plus a date night sounds like an awesome weekend! And I love the idea of make it happen Monday! I need to clean out my purse (a small task) and make some moves fitness wise– I’ve been out of the game for way too long now!

  25. Emma on June 25, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Wow, Workout 3 was tough/fab. Definitely feel a step closer to being bikini-ready after that and a Spin-esque HIIT! x

  26. Kat on June 25, 2012 at 2:22 pm

I got a prenatal massage right around my due date (I was doing anything to get that baby to come out) and I literally remember walking out of there like, “what the?? I just paid for someone to barely touch me…” LOVE deep tissue 😉

  27. Eucalya on June 25, 2012 at 2:23 pm

I sadly really don’t have time for workout even for 30 minutes so i’ll just do the bedtime ab burner! What i want for this week is to have my driving licence! I have the exam tomorrow and since it’s really hard (and expensive) to pass it at the 1st time in Switzerland, i REALLY REALLY hope i’m gonna have it! I also hope to finish my highschool exams having good grades (4 exams left and the results on friday)! Hectic week! xxx Nadja

So glad you guys still do date night – a true inspiration for sure! A San Diego trip sounds amazing, make sure you post your review of wherever you stay!

Eeee I love that seal! For some reason, I have such a soft spot for them. Hmm this week? I would like to tackle cleaning out my bedroom! It’s been far too long :S

  31. Amy on June 25, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Finished the 30 min HIIT during my lunch hour. I was a sweaty mess, but feel great now though. I had to push through the last 5 minutes… wanted to quit so bad.

  32. Rachel C on June 25, 2012 at 3:44 pm

I did my 30 minute HIIT program. I did a speed/interval program on the treadmill and it was killer!! I am excited to try Workout 3 tomorrow!!

  33. Natalie Rae on June 25, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Couldn’t do HIIT at home with the baby, but subbed in 45 mins of stroller power walking in the killer NC humidity 🙂

  34. Beks on June 25, 2012 at 4:17 pm

I just sent my second draft of my first book to my second editor (my aunt. I’m going indie for this endeavor!), so working on book two is HIGH on my list of priorities since I don’t have anything to edit just yet. The plan is to get the book up on Nook and Amazon if not by July 4, then by the following Sunday!

  35. Kristen on June 25, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Just wanna give you MAJOR props for SSU 2012!! You’ve really outdone yourself. It is fo sho the best one yet 🙂
I’m not doing the workouts just yet but I’m getting very inspired by the meal plans. I recently started seriously cleaning up my eats and I really want to focus on that and find what works for me before I start SSU. But when I feel ready, you can bet your booty I’m gonna rock it. I’ll say it again, you’ve done an amazing job with it this year. I’m excited!

  36. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on June 25, 2012 at 4:51 pm

Liv’s first beach trip! How exciting is that! I think it is time for me to bite the bullet and go to a sunny place..hmm…

  37. Brianna on June 25, 2012 at 4:52 pm

I’m from the East Coast, but I *just* got back (yesterday) from a vacay to San Diego! I would highly recommend the San Diego Mariott Marquis & Marina (West Harbor Drive, right on the water). My hubby and I both loved it! All of the rooms have gorgeous views of the bay, and the outdoor area has 2 pools, 2 jacuzzis, a cool bar, and a fire pit. Plus, it’s an easy walk into downtown. Good luck planning your trip!

  38. Rebecca on June 25, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Did 30 mins of HIIT on the treadmill during my lunch break. Those last 10 minutes were tough! My legs were oh-so-tired 🙂

  39. Casey on June 25, 2012 at 5:41 pm

I went to the gym with 0 intention of completing the challenge or even doing any HIIT. Hopped on an elliptical and after warming up was feeling amazing (I guess 4 days off from the gym will do that to you), cranked up the resistance to higher I’ve ever gone before, and busted my butt for 30 complete minutes. You are amazing 🙂

  40. Angela on June 25, 2012 at 5:47 pm

I was all into HIIT today – had my Tabata app and went outside to do the intervals. But I didn’t realize that my phone battery was going to die right in the middle! So I just tried to count out the intervals. I’ll plan better next time!

  41. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on June 25, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Ooh a massage is such a great way to relax on the weekend! Thanks for challenging us to get something done this week, I definitely need to set an action plan for things I put off 🙂

  42. Elle on June 25, 2012 at 7:10 pm

Glad you guys had a good date night!

Just got nice and sweaty busting out 30 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical!

  43. Holly @ Balanced in BMore on June 25, 2012 at 9:31 pm

I did Workout 3 today and will be getting my HIIT in tomorrow morning. Workout 3 was great – I love the minute long bursts of cardio between strength exercises 🙂 Thanks for another awesome workout!

    • Fitnessista on June 26, 2012 at 12:47 am

thank you for letting me know how it went!

  44. Mallory @ Teach Run Repeat on June 25, 2012 at 10:20 pm

HIIT went super well today considering I had some frustration to burn off…

Had a trainer take my body fat % and it went up a few percent! This is the most fit I have ever felt, I’ve been working so hard, getting in weights a few times a week, etc. I am still really upset because I’m doing everything right and just not getting anywhere :/

  45. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on June 25, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Ohh I hope you have the best time in San Diego!! My boyfriend was just there and he absolutely loved it! I want to pet a seal! 😀

  46. Kailey on June 25, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Went we went to San Diego I had to stop at La Jolla after you wrote about it-and that cute little area (especially those seals!) were one of the highlights of the whole trip for everyone!

Also, HIIT kicked my booty today! and the Ab Burner left a good burn, I love it!

    • Fitnessista on June 26, 2012 at 12:11 am

i love that part of la jolla so much! can’t wait to go back 🙂
i did the ab burner, too. my abs = fried
      xoxo

  47. Kate @katemovingforward on June 25, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Did my HIIT by mixing sprints and pylo exercises as my high interval and fast walking as my low. It went really fast! Also completed the Ab Burner and they are toasty! I’ve had a good day with eating clean as well, just as long as dark chocolate counts!

    • Fitnessista on June 26, 2012 at 12:11 am

      totally counts! 🙂

  48. Amy on June 25, 2012 at 11:26 pm

Hi Gina, I was wondering about HIIT, I’ve just started doing it, but I know you are supposed to be going all out for the speed intervals. I am 26, 5’4, 130 lbs, and according to my HRM my heart gets up to 180 during the speed intervals…is that high enough or should I be pushing myself more? I usually let it go back down to 140 before I start the next one. Thanks for your help- I’m loving SSU even though star planks are the worst thing I’ve ever encountered 😉

    • Fitnessista on June 26, 2012 at 12:11 am

i’m so glad you’re enjoying it so far!
and YES that’s more than high enough. 174 would be a good number, so anything around that is bueno. when i do it, i let my heart rate go down to 140 too before starting again (i’m 27)
      xoxo

      • Amy on June 26, 2012 at 9:22 am

Thank you so much! It’s so awesome that you give all these workouts and fitness advice for free, I’m really impressed with your blog. Bravo!

  49. Caitlin on June 26, 2012 at 12:17 am

So I had to switch todays workouts because of my schedule, and therefore tackled w/o number 3 tonight. Um…let me just say…I.was.a.mess. This is definitely the sweatiest workout yet! My heart rate was up up upppp the whole entire time. I couldn’t really feel the burn as much in my muscles as in the last two workouts, even though I was using the highest weights I could, but maybe that’s just because I was too distracted by my heart racing and sweating so much? I dunno. Either way it was an amazing workout! Thanks again Gina 🙂 good luck everyone!

  50. Madison (Pointy Toe Shoe Crew) on June 26, 2012 at 12:32 am

Got my 30 minutes of HIIT during lunch hour riding the bike! Just did my ab burner and some poblano peppers are in the oven right now gettin’ toasted for my A.M. bfast relleno! Can’t wait to try week 3 workout tomorrow!!
