Quite the Combo

Hiiii ๐Ÿ˜€ Happy Indian Food Wednesday <3 Hope youโ€™re having a great day so far. Thank you so much for all of the kind words on my inspiration board and re-visiting fall goals. I still get a little nervous for personal posts sometimes, but you always make me glad I went through with it ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, not to be a Debbie Downer, but I was up sick all night last night.

Iโ€™m thinking it was a combination of a belly full of Indian food, which was exceptionally greasy last night.

(Just looking at the picture is making me cringe right now)

+ The Cove

untitled

The Pilot and I watched it before bed last night and while I highly recommend the film โ€“itโ€™s hard to watch, but extremely well done and informational- I donโ€™t recommend it on a full belly.

Thank you SO much to those of you recommended this film last time I went to Sea World. I take everything you guys say to heart, and after quite a few of you said I needed to watch it, Iโ€™ve had in on my mind. For those of you who arenโ€™t sure what The Cove is about, you can check out *this article*. Itโ€™s especially heartbreaking because the annual dolphin slaughter begins today in Taiji, Japan ๐Ÿ™ Here are steps we can do to help stop this.

This little blog is supposed to pump you up, not bring you down, but I definitely had to share the word since the movie had such an effect on me. The Pilot and I talked a lot about the movie when it was finished and he had an excellent point: there are bad things going on ALL over the world. We canโ€™t let the bad take over us, or weโ€™ll be constantly worrying. What we can do is voice our support for causes we believe in and pray that those who have a personal connection to the cause, who devote their lives to it, find a way to make it right. So wise <3

Off to catch some more zzzzzโ€™s, drink a lil tea, and then hopefully get back to the packing/moving beast ๐Ÿ™‚

See ya this afternoon!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: What movies have greatly affected you? Are there any other ones I need to watch? <3 (Food Inc. was excellent, as well)

i really was affected by sicko and super-size me…not to get too political, but i was pretty angry for a week afterwards! but you’re right…we can let it get us down, or we can stay positive and work for a change!

  2. Jessica @ How Sweet on September 1, 2010 at 10:19 am

I have never even heard of The Cove. It may sound superficial, but I tend to really only watch movies that make me laugh, or romatic comedies/action/etc. It’s kind of my escape from the real world!

    • Amy on September 1, 2010 at 10:41 am

I am the same way, Jessica! I can’t handle the dark stuff. Real life is scary enough!

  3. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on September 1, 2010 at 10:21 am

I haven’t heard of The Cove (besides on Twitter) but I want to check it out now. Just not after eating an Indian dinner/foodgasm ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Emily N on September 1, 2010 at 10:21 am

Great post! i agree with you and your hubby….as someone studying in the field of public health, its easy to get boggled down with all the health crises around the world (oil spill, preventable deaths of children and vulnerable, clean water scarcity, etc.), but if you let your spirits slide, you are less effective as a researcher and as an agent for change!
I love how positive this blog is even when facing the sometimes tragic realities in global health and nutrition (and food sources)!

  5. Megan on September 1, 2010 at 10:21 am

The Business of Being Born is a really powerful movie for anyone that is pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant.

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2010 at 10:23 am

i’ve seen it! AMAZING. so well done… the pilot watched it, too ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Marguerite Miller on September 1, 2010 at 10:24 am

Love your Pilot’s take on things! Hope you feel better today!

  7. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete on September 1, 2010 at 10:25 am

I haven’t heard of The Cove. But to be honest, I have a hard time with movies like that, they just get me so depressed and worried all the time.

Can I just say that I really appreciate the advice you post from The Pilot? I think it was a few weeks ago he said something like if something is annoying at a level 8 or more, be annoyed, but if it is less than that to let it roll of your back? (I’m prob saying that way wrong), but then what you both said about The Cove — how you can’t sit and be worried about it, that you can support groups and spread the word, etc.

I tend to worry about everything and get annoyed so easily, so any bits of advice like this really sit well with me, so thank you!

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2010 at 2:06 pm

      that’s exactly right ๐Ÿ™‚ he’s a very wise man <3

  8. Beth on September 1, 2010 at 10:38 am

I don’t think I’m ready to watch The Cove yet, I feel like I already know enough and it’s upsetting enough without having to see it in action, but is this where Sea World gets their animals? What is the correlation there?

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2010 at 2:06 pm

they provide dolphins to many of the amusement parks but i want to do more research to see how and where sea world gets their animals from

  9. Sandra on September 1, 2010 at 10:58 am

Request – clone the pilot ๐Ÿ™‚ I do want to check out that movie. And I LOVED Food, Inc. It pops into my head often when I’m grocery shopping.

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2010 at 2:05 pm

hahah the world would be a better place if there were more pilots to go around ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. jenna on September 1, 2010 at 10:58 am

thanks for sharing about the cove! sounds very interesting.

also, it seems like your pilot is a very positive resource to have around. whenever you seem down he always has something positive to contribute to the situation. thanks for sharing his take on it as well. I also wonder if his thoughts are a result of his career? ya know…i don’t mean to pry or get into your personal lives but i’m just saying maybe he has been ‘trained’ to think like that. it’s good that you share positive/different sides of the spectrum as well.

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2010 at 2:04 pm

i think it’s definitely attributed to his personality but the training helps too. he’s taught to ALWAYS remain cool under pressue and is constantly my voice of reason ๐Ÿ™‚
for our first disagreement ever, i was pacing around and ranting, and he was sitting on the couch and calmly said: come here, we’ll talk about it and figure it out.
i was like, “who are you?!?” haha

      • jenna on September 1, 2010 at 4:33 pm

thats soo funny!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think I would probably freak out if somebody calm said that to me while i’m ranting and going off. it’s so great you have that. When people get worked up they often stay worked b/c people around them feed them negative energy…which i’m to blame too if someone comes at me mad and furious it’s natural to respond in their tone.

  11. Corie B on September 1, 2010 at 11:01 am

Love the words of wisdom from the pilot. Very inspirational and uplifting!

  12. Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather on September 1, 2010 at 11:04 am

Definitely food Inc for both me and my husband. I loved that it helped him get more involved with our food and what we purchase.

  13. Michelle on September 1, 2010 at 11:08 am

I thought ‘no impact man’ was very inspirational, and informative. It shows you that it is possible to delete your own carbon footprint. Amazing.

This article about the decline of honeybees and what it can do to mankind has been freaking me out since I read it:http://www.kansascity.com/2010/08/03/2126809/honeybees-need-you-to-eat-organics.html

  15. allison @ livingoneday on September 1, 2010 at 11:21 am

open water 2. TERRIFYING. i sat there and bawled my eyes out the entire time, because i put myself in their situation! so sad.

  16. Whitney @ Whitinspired on September 1, 2010 at 11:28 am

This is absolutely disgusting, but at the same time, how is it any different than people in this country hunting deer, ducks, etc? To me, it’s all wrong.

  17. Carrie on September 1, 2010 at 12:12 pm

The first time I saw a woman giving birth in a movie I realized that I’m not so sure I want to do the whole pregnancy thing. Ever since I have seriously considered adopting, and if I can afford it, I probably will. My dream is to adopt twins. I’m one of those women who never had that crazy desire to be pregnant, but I do want children some day.

  18. Erin Hayes on September 1, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Sucks you were sicky-hope you’re feeling better! I will definitely have to watch The Cove. Food, Inc had a huge impact on me, as well as Fast Food Nation. It’s so easy to get sucked into all the negative, heartbreaking, disgusting information! While it’s important to be informed, I agree with the Plot’s words of wisdom…there always needs to be balance.

    • Erin Hayes on September 1, 2010 at 12:19 pm

      Plot? noooooo PILOT!! ๐Ÿ˜›

  19. suki on September 1, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I know the Cove is hard to watch, so even though we have it on Netflix, I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it just yet. :/ Have you seen King Corn yet?

  20. MoniMeals on September 1, 2010 at 12:24 pm

The Cove also got me. Another show on tv called “Whale Wars” got to me and my husband, the poor guys was balling. I get lost thinking how can a human do this…HOW??!?!? This is just another reason I am a vegetarain, because of the same concept in a sense.
I wanted you to know I also have a vistion board! I believe it in soooooooo much and I am lughing because yours from what I saw is very simliar to mine:) Dream it and Recieve it, right!

  21. Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) on September 1, 2010 at 12:38 pm

awwwww! hope you feel better soon.

Food Inc really spoke to me and def affected my choices at the market. I also watched King Corn & Super Size Me and found them very interesting… They both left me thinking for weeks.

  22. Jackie (Army Wife Extraordinaire) on September 1, 2010 at 12:38 pm

Everytime one of those incredibly sad SPCA commercials of abused dogs and cats come on I feel so helpless. I tell myself I adopted one of my 2 cats from the shelter and while I can’t adopt them all I can and do donate money and food to places like the Humane Society to help animals.

  23. sheena on September 1, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Born Into Brothels: Calcutta’s Red Light Kids

    really good documentary.

  24. erin on September 1, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I’ve been wanting to see The Cove, but I’m not sure if I could take it…I want to die when I hear or see any kind of animal abuse (a big part of the reason I’m vegetarian) and I just don’t know what kind of effect it would have on me – I suspect I’d have a similar reaction to yours.

A good movie I saw recently is “Mine”, a documentary about the pets of Hurricane Katrina. It is heart-breaking, and makes you think about the legal status of animals and how it should be different. It’s pretty tragic, though – I bawled through about 75% of it.

  25. Nicole on September 1, 2010 at 12:54 pm

I recently watched Who Killed The Electric Car? and it was interesting to me because I had never known that companies like GM, Ford, and Toyota all made purely electric vehicles at one point, then decided to take them off the road/away from their leaser’s, only to crush and destroy them. It was pretty upsetting from an environmental standpoint, especially after the whole BP Gulf Coast oil disaster.

  26. fittingbackin on September 1, 2010 at 1:05 pm

oh no – hope you feel much better already!

Wow – that movie cover is killing me… movies that have affected me lately include The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (O. M G.) and I still think about Slumdog a lot. Sad!

  27. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on September 1, 2010 at 1:12 pm

“I still get a little nervous for personal posts sometimes, but you always make me glad I went through with it ;)”–

It’s ALWAYS The most personal posts, the ones where we bare our souls even more than usual, those are the ones that readers adore and that somehow set us free as bloggers. I feel the same way…not sayin’ I dont get a case of major anxiety and sweaty palms before I click publish on a few of mine! ๐Ÿ™‚

Sorry you got sick…ugh, not fun.

The movies I havent seen and need to are all the Food Inc’s and food documentary films that have come out the past few years. Since having a baby, who’s closing in on 3.5-4 years old…time flies…I havent seen movies. There has been no time in my life to sit down for 3 hrs b/c oh yeah, I read blogs. LOL

Anyway though, way to bring attention to causes, but you’re right, we can’t dwell and live our life in a debbie downer place because of those things, staying upbeat & balanced is best, for me at least.

The documentary “Earthlings” (2005, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix) is what caused me to radically change my eating habits.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthlings_(documentary)

I need to warn everyone though – this movie is hard to watch… No. I mean it. Like, EXTREMELY PAINFUL to watch. However, I think sometimes exposing ourselves to the truth of what goes on in our world is necessary to enlighten and change us.

  29. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on September 1, 2010 at 1:28 pm

That’s next on my list–I’ve heard that it’s powerful and deeply emotional.

I watched a documentary called Under Our Skin about lyme disease and it was gut-wrenching but such a good film. It’s something I wasn’t very informed about and wish more people knew about.

  30. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on September 1, 2010 at 1:33 pm

I haven’t seen The Cove, but several people have tweeted about it recently and I’m super intrigued. Super-Size Me really kicked off a whole new way of eating when I saw it in high school, and Food Inc. also had a huge impact on me. It’s amazing how powerful a good documentary can be!!

  31. Genevieve on September 1, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Earthlings. Watch it – but definitely not on a full stomach, and make sure there are tissues around… Difficult, but essential.

  32. Mama Pea on September 1, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Just spent the last two hours writing a post (to go up tonight) about how watching The Cove reaffirmed my commitment to a vegan lifestyle.

I’m glad the film touched you as well. There are SO many things we can do to make a difference in the lives of animals.

  33. April @ Crazy Fabulous Life on September 1, 2010 at 2:04 pm

That movie was so hard to watch. I sat there teary eyed with my mouth open almost the whole time. I couldn’t help but wonder..is what goes on in that cove so different from what goes on in slaughter houses all over America? I’ve seen so much outrage over this movie and what happens in that cove..but most (not talking about you, obviously!) turn the other cheek when it comes to slaughter houses. I wonder why that is?

Sorry to get all rambly in your comments! That movie has just been on my mind since I saw it Sunday.

  34. Sarah on September 1, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I haven’t watched many documentaries because I get really upset by all the political bias to the point where I have a hard time enjoying them for what they truly could be. However, as far as books and regular movies go, the ones with the biggest impact for me are The Little Prince (book..my favorite), Les Choristes (French movie with English substitles…it’s beautiful..my hubby and I did a bit of crying:), Super Size Me really guided my vision toward health in high school, and Avatar- The Last Airbender (yes, I know it’s a cartoon and perhaps I should be embarassed, but the principles and story are really amazing). Maybe I will give Food, Inc. a try. I have been avoiding it since the day I heard about it, but maybe it will be more than I think. Thanks for the post.

  35. Caitlin (EatFeats) on September 1, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Feel better! My friend has been talking about that movie, but I’m so sensitive that I am afraid to watch it.

  36. Catherine on September 1, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Thanks so much for writing about The Cove and all of the issues involved! I’m one of the people who commented on your earlier post, and I’m so happy you watched it and used your blog to raise more awareness. Kudos to you, Gina ๐Ÿ™‚

Dear John is the best movie i’ve seen in a long time. Really opened my eyes xx

  38. Beth @ DiningAndDishing on September 1, 2010 at 3:31 pm

The last movie that really affected me was “Dear Zachary”. It is a documentary, for the son of a Dr. who was killed by his ex-girlfriend. It has a really shocking twist and really made me think about our justice system in North America. I HIGHLY recommend it!

  39. Glutenfreesta on September 1, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Happy Indian Food Wednesday to you! I love Indian cuisine and only really got turned on to it after I was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance. I’d say almost 90% of the food at a traditional Indian restaurant is gluten free (that 10% primarily consisting of NAM). Hoping to spread the word and Indian food love to all those gf people out there like me.

  40. Lauren W. on September 1, 2010 at 3:51 pm

The Cove is actually turning into a series on Animal Planet called Blood Dolphins. I saw a commercial for it when I was watching Whale Wars (also a good show), and told myself I have to watch it.

  41. Kayci on September 1, 2010 at 3:59 pm

i have to agree with those who said earthlings. i have only watched the trailer and cannot watch any more, but it reaffirmed my commitment to veganism and towards dedicating my life to protecting animals. just a warning, don’t watch it alone like i did. baaaaad plan.

  42. Neen @ Broad Bean to Runner Bean on September 1, 2010 at 4:37 pm

sounds like a moving film, i must check it out. the pilot is very wise and reasonable!

  43. Mo on September 1, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Your pilot’s comments are so, so right. I call it your circle of influence – because there is only so much within your power to control – it doesn’t do you any good to fret over what you cannot control. I think sometimes we end up causing ourselves additional stress when we worry about things that we can’t change. So I just worry about things in my “circle of influence” and I do what I can. Dare I say your pilot is wise beyond his years!

    Take care of your tummy,

    Mo

  44. Karyn on September 1, 2010 at 6:00 pm

i’ve been way affected by military movies. it doesn’t matter what it’s really about they just move me. no other genre or specific movie has that kind of effect on me.

  45. Hailey on September 1, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I can hardly sit through a show on RSPCA rescues or any animal docos without tearying up or getting upset/angry! My partner knows to just change the channel if Im around. The cove would probably do my head in!

Pilot is a very wise man though! So true.

  46. Jill on September 1, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I don’t think it’s a downer thing to comment on an issue you feel passionate about. It’s good to inform people, and you are in a great position to do so. I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch The Cove yet- I just know it will be so difficult to get through.

  47. Annie (Delicious Wellness) on September 1, 2010 at 6:53 pm

I think it’s awesome that you took time to share your reaction to The Cove. Congrats on being brave enough to watch it AND face the issues it brings up! That is quite a handful. Hope you feel better

Funny you should bring up ‘The Cove,’ My friend was just here the other night and was saying how she couldn’t sleep the night before due to viewing that film! But I am really curious now…Thanks for sharing!

I know it’s kind of a silly one, but “Joe Vs. The Volcano” is super inspirational to me. I love the part when he’s on the raft in the middle of the ocean with the Moon and he starts to pray. Goofy movie with a good message.
