The famous Dump Cake

Hey guys! How was your day?

Ours has been bueno. We ended up skipping the one-year-old’s day party since we had to wait around for the DirectTV tech to get here. Good news though, we have working cable again 😀 The TV hasn’t been on since Tuesday and even though the silence has been lovely, it’s nice to have the option.

This afternoon, I munched egg salad.

Not your typical mayo-esque egg salad (which is delicious), but this egg salad consisted of heated leftover grilled veggies from last night with two egg whites and wilted spinach.

salad

It was pretty face-rocking 🙂

I also made the pilot his favorite dessert… a DUMP CAKE 😀

Steps to making a dump cake:

Layer 1: Can of crushed pineapple

dump cake

Layer 2: Can of cherry pie filling

dump cake (2)

Layer 3: Yellow Cake mix

dump cake (3)

Layer 4: a melted stick of butter (Paula Deen would be proud, ya’ll)

dump cake (4)

Bake at 350 for 50 minutes.

dump cake (5)

Top with ice cream, like the pilot did, or grab a fork and take a few crunchy bites from the corner.. like me 😉

bites

Heh heh.

Insanity Week 4 Re-cap

So as ya’ll know, I’ve been doing Insanity for the past month. You can read my Week 1 re-cap here.

I’m a HUGE fan of the program so far… I’ve never sweat so much doing cardio before and while it isn’t for everyone, I think it’s a great *fit* for athletic people who want to take things to a new level and add some spice to a workout routine. According to Jeni’s husband: you move really fast until you throw up or your heart explodes. (It was his first night last night) It’s not THAT bad (or I wouldn’t be doing it), but it’s pushed me to a new level and I can definitely see physical results already. My muscles feel tighter and I’m much stronger. I used to be able to do maybe 8 push-ups, and now I can bust ‘em out like it ain’t no thang.

New observations:

-The way they have the workout calendar set up really does have a rhyme and reason to it. Each week got progressively harder, even though we were doing the same DVDs. The workout order is planned to make the program more difficult as you get stronger. Pretty cool.

-I think it needs to be combined with some kind of weight training plan. I haven’t been lifting weights during the program so far, and while I’ve leaned out, I can also tell I’ve burned away some muscle. For month two, I will also be weight training 3x a week like I did pre-Insanity. Nothing crazy, but enough so that I can maintain my muscle as I burn fat.

-Shaun T. is awesome. I really like his personality and think he does a great job of explaining and motivating

shaunt

This next week (while we’re at the Bahamas) is recovery week, so I’ll be doing the recovery DVD along with some yoga while we’re on vacay, or whatever else I may be feelin’. Two Mondays from now, I’ll be starting month 2 of the program, which is supposed to be even more intense than the first month. I’m excited 😀

Well I’m off to make that salmon I forgot about last night 😉

See ya in the morning!

xoxo,

G$

Today’s tip: Find a good workout buddy and a way to motivate each other. I love to workout with friends, and the pilot is also an excellent workout buddy. This morning, we made a deal that when one of us had to rest, the other one would keep pushing through. In other words, we both wouldn’t rest at the same time. During Insanity (you need to take rests during the workout), one of us would call out “rest” and the other one would keep going. It was a great way to stay motivated 🙂

I had the BEST cardio workout today, I love sweating A LOT, especially after it’s been a while since I have! Love when I can feel myself getting out of a cardio rut!

  2. Lauren @ eater not a runner on May 8, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Sounds so intense! I don’t think I have enough room in my apartment for that kind of workout haha.

I would love to have a work out buddy, but people get intimidated by my workouts! Haha.

  4. Alison on May 8, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I like crunchy corner bites, too.
I actually work out better alone, BUT I also love group exercise classes. It’s like we’re working side by side, but not *together*. The commaradarie is still there, as well as the motivation, but I’m still in my own little exercise bubble. That’s just what works for me.

Love love LOVE dump cake. My mom makes one similar to yours with cream cheese icing and it is *unbelievably* good. We usually freeze the slices, and they taste even better that way!

hahah the pilot is asking for the recipe 🙂

I have been eyeing that Insanity workout since before you start it. I love you recaps and I think I’m going to get it in a month or so. Thanks for the detailed recap!

  7. Allie on May 8, 2010 at 9:07 pm

great review! i have been doing the workouts for almost 4 weeks now and i love them. i consider myself pretty fit, and these are a challenge for sure. i was going to ask you about additional weight training, becuase i was thinking about adding in a little upper body, so i am glad you addressed that. my only concern/problem is it’s a little hard on my knees with the plyo jumps. how have your knees held up?

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2010 at 9:34 am

they’ve been totally fine so far *knock on wood*

  8. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com on May 8, 2010 at 10:06 pm

omg i love the crumbly hard bits and corners.. YUM! extra delicious! looked so scrumptious 🙂

  9. Julie @ Pickley Pear on May 8, 2010 at 10:48 pm

I like the Beachbody sets. I did Chalene Extreme last year – which is a lot of strength training. I’m not quite ready for P90X…sounds like Insanity could give that a run?

  10. Liza on May 8, 2010 at 11:01 pm

I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to start doing Insanity during my cardio days. I was getting bored with my usual cardio (running and interval skiprope).

Thanks for also addressing the weight training part! Enjoy your weekend at the Bahamas! 🙂

    XO

I found an insanity p90x hybrid program online I’ve been following and it’s awesome. Perfect amount of weights and cardio. Have you ever tried p90?

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2010 at 9:34 am

no i haven’t, but i’d like to check it out

  12. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 9, 2010 at 1:21 am

tv can be a good thing to have, just on those days where you just want to veg out.

  13. Sarah on May 9, 2010 at 2:58 am

Dump cake looks fascinating. Do you mix anything together? (atleast the cake mix and butter?) or just layer it all and leave it be?

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2010 at 9:34 am

nope, just layer and bake it up! 🙂

  14. hemp jogger on May 9, 2010 at 9:51 am

so awesome on the fitness level youre feeling now! gotta love pushing yourself.

but omg girl, my mom used to make dump cake ALL THE TIME when we were kiddos! seeing it just made me smile 🙂 so easy, and so damn good.

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2010 at 11:09 am

that’s awesome! and yes.. it’s pretty freaking amazing 🙂

  15. Miriam on May 9, 2010 at 11:06 am

Insanity… move really fast, hard… That sound like a great workout!! I just love how you feel after really pushing yourself physically. I might just look into that!

  16. Carolyn @ lovinlosing on May 9, 2010 at 11:55 am

I might have to try that dump cake. I think the husband would enjoy it!

  17. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on May 9, 2010 at 11:57 am

Insanity sounds… well, insane! I think it sounds awesome, though- I love DVDs that push you!!

  18. Ash Bear on May 9, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Insanity sounds great. I wish I could justify paying $90 right now when I belong to a gym. Thanks for the recap. Can you get it online anywhere?

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2010 at 6:59 pm

      not legally, but yes

  19. I hadn’t heard of Insanity before you started doing it but its something I would definitely consider now.

That’s a good tip about only one partner taking a rest at one time. I don’t have a specific workout partner right now but I will file that away for the future. 😉

  20. Ellen on May 10, 2010 at 11:29 am

I have the Insanity program. My husband and I completed it about 6 months ago and I loved it. I bought all of the “extras” and really enjoyed the program. The first night (day after the fit test) I almost passed out. I workout, run, etc and thought that I was in great shape…Shawn T showed me!

  21. Nicole on May 10, 2010 at 4:51 pm

I started InSaNiTy last week and tonight makes number two! I am very petite and have been very active in fitness and weights for about two years now. I follow the eat clean way of life and only have the last little layer of fat to loose. I have been waiting to see what you truely think of the insanity dvd’s. It is really hard core for me and I have considered myself very capable of doing intense cardio. Do you follow the eating guide at all? I am hoping that this really helps with my latest fitness goals. Thanks Fitnessista! P.s. Love your blog and I too am from Arizona.

  22. Lynette on May 10, 2010 at 4:55 pm

When we make dump cake, our layers are the same as yours, except we add two more layers – coconut and chopped pecans! Yummy!

  23. Joanna on May 10, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I am jealous that you are getting through the program…I was super excited to start and after completing week one I noticed something happening to my ankle…well today I am in a boot for 4 weeks with a fracture. I still think that insanity is a great workout but you need to be really careful. I have never had any prior injuries like this from working out and have always had good form. I guess sometimes it just happens. I can’t wait for this to heal so that I can give it another shot. I am still following the nutrition guide and am going to continue weight training. If anyone has any tips for workouts without using my legs please post them!

    Hi 🙂

I just started Insanity n loving it 🙂 quick question – I am not overweight but not toned (flabby) – I currently lift weights 3 times a week in d evenings and the only time I can fit Insanity is in the mornings before work. Is this ok or will it make me lose muscles instead? Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Thank youu

    • Fitnessista on May 8, 2012 at 12:21 pm

i think that should be totally fine. just pay attention to your body and make sure you’re not overtraining, though. i wouldn’t lift weights on the same days as the long dvd days
      xoxo

  25. Juliette on May 8, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Got it, thanks a lot 🙂 will let you know how d progress is by the end of it

  26. Amanda on June 18, 2012 at 3:52 pm

My brother has his own version of your “dump cake!” You use a large can of peaches (ie peach cobbler style dump cake) in lieu of the pineapple and cherries. I think he calls it “bachelor peach cobbler” or something silly like that. I kind of want to try it out but with a gf cake mix and some earth balance – yum!
