Detox My Socks
Hey friends! <3
How’s your day going?? Hope it’s been fabuloso.
After the great breakfast debate, eggs won in the end.
I munched 2 pieces of brown rice toast with sliced goat cheese, 3 egg whites with salsa verde. Hit. The. Spot.
After b-fast, catching up on blogs, and planning out my day, I packed up lunch and snacks:
The tower o’ goodness:
A salad beast with quinoa (from yesterday), mixed with chickpeas, red bell pepper, grape tomatoes, oregano and fresh dill
Balsamic on the side, blackberries and an amazeball for snackage
That amazeball didn’t stand a chance- I ate it in the car an hour later
So as you guys know, I’ve been seeing a homeopathic doc to help with some hormone irregularities. When we first started working together, he sent me an eating plan that I kind of blew off. It was boring and I didn’t feel like eating that way (or making you guys read about it). As the last stage of my treatment, he sent me a box of new supplements, along with THIS:
That’s right friends, it’s detox time.
I’ve never done a detox, so I’m interested to see how it goes. It’s a 30-day plan, with the first 10 days being entirely vegan, the next 10 adding in fish, and the last 10 days adding in chicken and fermented dairy (I’ll be using goat’s dairy, per usual).
Detoxes have a bad rap because they’re often associated with unhealthy weight loss strategies (PS. If you detox to lose weight, you will gain it back—the best way to get to a healthy weight is through healthy eating and moderate exercise), and I really believe that the body is an intelligent machine and can take the *trash out* on its own.
However, I think that it can be a good idea to give your body a rest every now and again by giving it easily-digestible whole foods, which is why I’m going to roll with it. I’ll be altering the plan because I’m super active and will be making sure to get enough fuel to support my lifestyle. I’ll base my meals on the ones the doctor gave me, in addition to recipes from Crazy Sexy Diet and Dextox for Women. I’m really thinking of it as 30 days of squeaky clean eating more than a *detox*.
Since I have the rest of this week’s food to get through, I’m going to wait and start next week after I plan my eats, grocery shop, and then it’s go time.
Have you done a detox before?
My friend Ashley is doing her own detox thang and blogging it. I’ll share tidbits as I go along with my own experience, but will be writing about the usual stuff too- not too much will change around here
Well I’m back to work!
See ya in the morning <3
xoxo
Gina
I’ve been thinking about a two week clean eating detox for awhile now. Excited to hear how it goes!
I’ve never done an “actual detox” except to detox from processed foods. Good Luck!
Ok, I need to get some blackberries! They always look so good when you post pictures, then I forget to buy them. I get all my produce from a CSA box, but I need to make a special purchase for blackberries on my next grocery trip!
Good luck with the detox!!! I can’t wait to read about it. Thanks for the shout out my dear! I’ve seriously had so much fun experimenting with new recipes and have been feeling so much better! Although, I have the some sort of flu-bug right now…boo! I totally agree about detoxes getting a bad wrap. Everyone has been shocked that I’m eating LOTS of food and are excited to see a healthy way to detox. Have fun Gina! 🙂 <3
We are detoxing from caffeine right now on our blog and it is day 4. I totally agree with your points and it’s not a diet at all but we were inspired by Kris Carr and wanted to see if we could kick the habit. Yesterday my headaches finally subsided and it may sound silly but I feel a lot ‘cleaner’ if that makes sense. Good luck with the plan! Can’t wait to follow along on your blog : )
Good luck with the detox! I’ve been reading about Ashley’s and it seems interesting. I hope it helps you.
Also… I can’t wait to make a batch of those ballz! I need to get some almonds to make almond butter and then I can experience the greatness. It looks like a freaking awesome recipe.
I went RAW for about 6 months-which to most would be considered a detox…i’m trying to find a healthy mix of clean, raw, vegan, vegetarian living-whatever that means. Whatever works best for me! Your detox sounds great-good “clean out the system” detox-can’t wait to hear how it goes!
i was 100% raw for a month (when i went to culinary school) but it wasn’t a detox at all- i ate raw desserts all day every day haha
That is very interesting woman… I’m maybe interested in joining you. I’ve felt like I was in an eating slump lately and need to clean up my diet and get my old energy back (was trying to add more protein to see if that made a difference!). Perhaps a detox would help?
Love that you’re going to do a detox! I’ve been following Ashley on hers and find it so inspiring. Can’t wait to see how you do with it!
Mmmmm a quinoa salad sounds delish! I should make some. Also, last night I made alfredo sauce (on the fly) with goat cheese, almond milk and spices after you mentioned it a couple days ago on the bloggy. I added in sautee mushrooms, crushed red pepper and grilled shrimpies.I LOVED IT. Definely going to make it again and measure things to create an actual recipe. So good!
I’ve never actually done a detox. I have some hormonal imbalances too so I’m interested to know how the 30 day detox works for you.
I have been trying to really clean up my eats too. It’s been fun to watch Ashley, and now I can’t wait to watch yours too. I am gleaning all sorts of fun clean eating ideas from all of this! 🙂
I’ve done a few detoxes before and they are AMAZING. I always feel so good on them, have so much energy, my skin always looks better, etc. I do always lose weight on them too, although that is never my intention…I think it just naturally happens by eliminating all the “junk” food I typically eat. They are just a really good way to kick start healthy eating. Also, I’ve done different length detoxes. 30 days, 10 days, etc and the 30 day on is definitely my favorite.
Good luck Gina! I’ve never really done a detox full-on before but I just try to eat as clean as possible on a regular basis. Recently I’ve found that minimizing gluten has really helped to boost my energy levels, so for now I’m feeling pretty good but I’d consider a detox in the future if I was feeling a little off. Can’t wait to hear more about yours!
I’ve just finished one week of 100% “clean eating” following the Eat Clean diet. I think of it as a detox from sugar. Cause seriously, I’m a total addict.
I am just finishing up the clean program -which is a 21 day detox/cleanse. I feel great and no stomach issues! The goal is to add back one eliminated food at a time to see which ones I am sensitive to.
Good luck on your clean eating, I think you will like it!
I am finishing my clean program on Saturday. I agree no stomach issues and have lost a good amount of weight. I made a green curry which is allowed on the program. If you are interested check out my webpage for recipe details.
I actually did a post right before New Years (since many ppl do them after New Yrs) about detox diets and that I’ve never done one, don’t advocate them and not really a fan as a whole (generally) b/c *most* of them are not doctor supervised, they have you living off things like lemon juice and cayenne pepper so to speak, and they are not sustainable in the long term.
But like you said, this is dr. supervised, you’re not doing it to lose weight (as you said healthy eating + exercise is important), everything seems really balanced and you have your head screwed on straight about it and are not diving in without doing your research. And it sounds like it’s a good fit, for you. And that’s awesome 🙂
You go girl and keep us posted on how you like it, your results, progress, etc.
And Ive been following all Ashley’s posts, too, and have loved reading along on her journey, too.
I am doing the clean program too. It has not been too bad. And i have noticed that i dont feel hungry and i have more energy. there are some details about how the diet has done. I finish this saturday(21 days)
Good luck girl! I want that salad beast with the quinoa pronto…it looks delicious! 😀
I don’t think I would stand a chance with a detox. Though I do follow a vegan diet so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Good luck! Your lunch looks delish!
What is the problem with hormonal imbalance ?
it’s causing some other things that i want to get sorted out before the pilot comes home
I love indian food! I had indian food thursday and made a green curry today.
You already eat so cleanly, is a detox really necessary?
i eat pretty well most of the time, but i think the purpose is more structure behind this and that the fun stuff is taken out :/ i’ll miss my cocktails and fried sweet potatoes, but they’ll be back soon enough
Well, best of luck! 🙂
I’ve tried a few detoxes in the past, including the Clean Program, juice fasting, and “Detox 4 Women.” They were all a little too stringent for my lifestyle at the time, but I have taken bits and pieces from Detox 4 Women, and from The Raw Food Detox Diet, and have incorporated them into my regular diet over the past few years.
I was definitely more successful when I started making gradual “clean” changes, rather than all the brief detoxes I tried, so I think you’ve got a good mindset going into it! Can’t wait to hear how it goes for you! 😀
a 30 day detox seems intense!! I try not to eat processed foods anymore and I feel a whole lot better!
my husband was having a lot of GI issues, and he went to see a homeopathic doc who put him on an “elimination diet” to cut out just about all food allergens. whole, unprocessed stuff – simple meats, spinach, asparagus, brown rice, that kind of thing. it was rough at first because it was pretty limited, but it brought lots of quinoa into our lives 🙂
I think detoxes can be good, but some bad too , and some people do for the wrong reasons ; p I am excited for you to do this, Im sure it will be great and those balls ahhhhhhhhhh looks so good! I have to make those! have a gnite ; ) xo
The word “detox” has started to have a negative connotation to it and I belive it is because people are using detox programs for the wrong reason (weight loss). If done properly detoxing can be very beneficial! I look forward to see how it makes you feel! I cannot wait to pick up a copy of Crazy, Sexy Diet!
you will love the book- i’m hooked already 🙂
Good luck with the detox- I am very interested to see how it goes. It is is successful I just might try it!
My mom is on a detox right now…. I was skeptical at first, but after reading more about it, it seems like a good thing.
One of my dear friends is going through a 10 Day Cleanse right now also. I also think that giving your body a good cleanse/detox on occasion is good for your body. I have not had one in awhile but my body will usually tell me when it feels it’s time. Good luck with your detox. I’m certainly interested in it and see how it goes for you.
sounds interesting— would be you willing to share the details of the detox with those intrested?
yup i’ll post the deets when i start
i did a detox last february and i really liked it! it’s nice to just concentrate on clean eating for a while. my body definitely felt great by the end of it! 🙂
I’ve never done a detox before. They’ve always kind of freaked me out. Yours sounds legit and healthy unlike others out there.
Sounds interesting! I’ll be excited to read about it! When are you planning to start?
prob monday- i grocery shop on sun and still have some food to eat through 🙂
I’ve been doing the 21 day Crazy Sexy Diet “cleanse” and it’s making me just feel spectacular. Good luck!
Ah you definitely have my little wheels turning in my brain…but the post header made me think this was about stinky gym socks and my first thought was “I CAN SO RELATE!!!”
Uhm, does that make me gross?? 🙂
xoxo
S
hahaha NO!
Ok, first, the subject reminded me of a fun kids’ book called “Smelly Socks” — I had an entirely different thought in mind for this post (oh, fitnessista is going to recommend some new laundry detergent). Secondly, some friends were going to do the 21 day detox cleanse from some new best selling book that was on Oprah, and as soon as I even heard and thought about it, it set off the biggest binge I’ve ever been on in my life. But, I’m sure you will thrive! Oh, and I got the Crazy Sexy Diet book and I’m excited reading it…..
I’ve been keeping up with Ashley’s detox and it’s real interesting! I look forward to trying something like it after my cupcake fundraiser is over. Good luck on yours!
If you do go into more details about your detox, I, for one would be very interested! I share your philosophy on the merits and downfalls of detoxes, am also really active (and a trainer, too!) so yeah, if you end up writing more about it than you’re letting on that you will be, I for one will be very interested!
sure i’ll def post the details when i start
Does the detox include any grains? What are your thoughts on grains, by the way? Obviously, whole grains are better than refined, but I don’t see what grains can provide that vegetables can’t (e.g., complex carbs, fiber). I was just curious because I’ve heard that grains like wheat can be a gut irritant, and I know that for me, it bloats me and sometimes gives me stomach cramps (never been tested for gluten intolerance though).
Looking forward to hearing about the results of your “detox”!
i know it includes quinoa but can’t remember if it has any others
grains are fabulous but i don’t think they’re totally necessary for nutrient reasons. i just like them for carb energy and because they make life more fun 😉
I did the Wild Rose detox a couple months ago and liked it! It still involved food, but just ‘extra clean’. I think its a good benefit. But I’m with you, most ppl are doing it for the wrong reasons. Not sure what the doc has to you on for hormones, but I like Maca, Cod Liver Oil (ick) but does wonders for regulating cycles.
my cycles are regular but my hormone levels are off- i’m on marshmallow root, chaste tree, and a few other things
Nice! Chaste tree is excellent too…hope it helps!
I’ve never done a detox but I’d like to! I know it’s not excellent for weight loss but I think I would feel good, and there are certain occasions I want to lose a few pounds, like my sister’s upcoming wedding. I’m interested in hearing how your detox goes!
I have some issues from hormones like night sweats and these rough bumps that show up on the backs of my arms. But my doc just kind of shrugs it off. I wonder if a homiopathic doctor could help me.
my doc on base did the same thing, so i went to the homeopath who took things a lot more seriously
Gina, that salad looks delicious! And I look forward to reading about the 30 day detox.
Wow, your salad beasts look indeed similar to mine. I had a qunioa, hummus and Mediterranean inspired lunch, as well! As they say, great minds think alike 🙂
Good luck on your detox and can’t wait to hear how it all goes!
I am thinking of doing some type of clean/detox type of “diet” when my man is out of town for a week on business. It is too hard to cook for the both of us if I am on too special of a diet. I am lucky in general because 2 weeks ago he asked for the rule of meatless dinners on weekdays! I know how to pick ’em!
What exactly are you detoxing from? I read your blog pretty regularly and you seem to eat nothing but healthy foods. Do you ever splurge on something that isn’t healthy?
for sure! i eat fried sweet potato fries, drink wine and cocktails and enjoy desserts at least a few times each week. i don’t blog all of my eats- i mostly blog the eats that are whole meals and snacks for others to get ideas from. a chocolate wrapper or an almond butter covered spoon wouldn’t really help anyone.
it’s not really a detox *from* anything, but a chance for my organs to divert their energy to other sources instead of working to break down hard-to-digest food.
I think detox can be done right, with the right intent.
Do you think you can post in depth details of what you’re going to be altering for your detox? I’d love to know how you’re doing it.
What brand of balsamic dressing do you use on your salad beasts?? Do tell!
I also have hormonal issues also, I would love to know what the detox entails. I will be very interested to know what your daily meals are like when you start. It will give me an idea at least if I want to start my own detox. i hear ya on the hard to digest food. I really need to eliminate eating those kind of foods in my diet. I know I can do it, just need more wilpower.
