28 weeks
and feeling sleeeeeeeepy.
20 weeks: 26 weeks:
28 weeks:
I donโt know where it came from, but Iโm definitely starting to feel dragged down a little bit. Itโs funny because Iโll have CRAZY bursts of energy, and then suddenly feel like I got hit by a truck. Iโm definitely taking advantage of extra resting and occasional naps. To the people who told me to sleep as much as I can during the pregnancy: Iโm taking your advice to heart. In college, I used to do fine โmaintain my grades/scholarships, teach and take dance classes at night- on just a couple hours of sleep, and since I havenโt had to do that anymore after college, Iโve lived up my nightly 7-8 hours of zzzzzzโs. However, I feel like when the time comes, my body will switch back to that mode and do what it needs to do on little sleep. My mom said that her mantra was always โsleep is overrated.โ
New this week:
-I officially have no bellybutton. In the beginning of all of this, I was worried because my bellybutton turned into a small swimming pool. Itโs gone now. Thereโs just a tiny tuck of skin where my bellybutton used to be, and Iโm still wondering if it will stay a no-bellybutton or pop into an outie. Also [sorry, this is weird but this is also my TMI page] my belly is covered in blonde peach fuzz. I heard that this was a side effect of pregnancy, and am thanking my lucky stars that the one physical characteristic I got from my dad โheโs blonde with blue eyes- is blonde leg hair, arm hair and now.. belly hair.
-I have my gestational diabetes test tomorrow morning. Iโll report back on how it goes, and in a strange way, Iโm kind of excited to try the infamous orange flat soda drink. Of all of the artificial flavorings out there, orange is my favorite, and Iโm taking a trip to Nordstrom Rack as a reward for getting robbed of blood [it opens today!].
-Taking Bradley Method classes has been one of the best things weโve done to prepare for a healthy pregnancy and birth. I thought it would be a smart move since Tom doesnโt have a lot of outside time to read baby books, and we could spend some extra time together and learn the necessities during our classes [we have 12 two-hour classes]. What makes me most excited is the fact that he really understands why having a natural childbirth is important to me.
I wondered if it would end up being one of the things he just decided to go along with since I was so adamant about it, but he really gets it from all of the information heโs learned in our classes. The other night, our instructor asked each husband why he wanted a natural childbirth and Tomโs response was amazing. [Weโre also learning about all of the other birth options and procedures so if something else needs to happen, weโll be prepared for that, too. Weโre going into this whole thing with the goal of having a natural childbirth, but if that doesnโt happen, a healthy mom and baby are the #1 priority]
-We watched the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD and loved it. I think that it will be good to have those strategies in our back pocket, and now know how to swaddle. Itโs really just like wrapping a burrito ๐
I always thought that swaddling looked so counterintuitive โโwant to feel comfy and secure? let me wrap your arms to your body so you canโt moveโ- but apparently it works. Iโve already stocked up on quite a few Aden + Anais blankets, courtesy of the amazing BabySteals deals.
-All of her newborn โ 3-month clothes are put away in the changing table dresser
and still need to be washed. The rest of her clothes are in her โbig girlโ room and weโll just wash and transport them to the nursery as she grows into them.
-Thereโs a feeling I have that sheโs going to come earlier than her due date- around 38 or 39 weeks instead of the full 40. Maybe thatโs something every first-time mom says, and maybe itโs just the fact that Iโm so anxious to meet her, but I have a feeling sheโll surprise us. She better just wait until sheโs fully-baked and ready, though.
Two links that have been sent to me this week: [warning: both made me cry. One out of sadness, one out of happiness]
Swaddling DEFINITELY works! They fight it at first, but it calms them down after a few minutes.
Also, I hate that sudden lack of energy. Third trimester is here! ๐
I’m just now getting into my 2nd trimester energy– and thank GOODNESS, after the zombie existence that was first trimester. Funny about swaddling- it does seem kind of counter-intuitive, doesn’t it?
I love the little slippers! The baby head poking out of the burrito is too much.
She has certainly grown in the last two weeks! You look absolutely gorgeous. And all those little baby clothes… I die.
You look so beautiful, Gina – you glow! I love that “just like wrapping a burrito” comment – it made me chuckle! ๐ Good luck at your gestational diabetes test – enjoy the orange soda, and happy shopping, lol! ๐ Love reading these posts, even though I’m not pregnant – I feel so reasssured about pregnancy reading them, and love that you are “TMI”, because that is the stuff that needs to be talked about! I’ve said this before, but I will say it again because it’s true: I am so happy for you both! You will be a wonderful Mum, for sure. The clothes you’ve bought your baby girl are so cute, and she is already surrounded by so much love! xyx
Love the swaddle! I actually posted today about proven baby calmin techniques ๐
Ps- I thought I’d be early too, but ended up having to be induced at 9 days past my due date. I think most first time moms feel like they’ll be early, but hoping it works out how you want it to!
Good luck on your glucose test tomorrow! I took mine yesterday and failed :-(… BUT, this is my 3rd baby and I fail the 1hour test everytime so I was prepared!!
My first kiddo loved to be swaddled, my second hated it… he loved to be sprawled out. It made for some very cute newborn photos!
Swaddles are amazing! The Summer Infant SwaddleMe blankets are great, especially at night because they’re all velcro–fool proof! Our daughter calms down as soon as we put her in one. I also thought my baby would arrive early (like most first time moms) but she was pretty comfy and didn’t come out until I was induced 3 days after my due date.
Those were such a lifesaver for us! I loved that you could just undo the bottom part for middle of the night diaper changes without having to unwrap the baby and re-do the whole swaddling process.
Less time consuming for mom + Less disruptive for baby = More sleep for everybody!
You look beautiful as always, Gina!
YAY for 28 weeks! I am going on 29 weeks this weekend and totally hear ya about the lack of energy. I do really good in the morning, getting up to workout then heading into work but around 1pm, I really want a nap. It’s been so fun being pregnant and I know I have a feeling as well that my little nug will come early too but as long as he/she is healthy, that’s all matters. Good luck with the test tomorrow, you will do fine. I had the fruit punch flavor and I actually loved it. My tests came back normal and I enjoyed a nice slice of pizza after my test. Again, I love reading your posts and can’t wait for the upcoming weeks.
i’m really happy for you!!! i’m a 18 year old portuguese girl and I love reading your blog! you definitely kow how to inspire people to live a healthier life. i just wish we had stores like TJ’s or whole foods around here lol…
congratulations on your pregnancy! by the way, you still look as fit as ever… it seems your baby belly’s photoshoped!!
xo
I love the woombie swaddle, so easy. And at 17 mos my son still loves the aden and anais blankets.
And you look fabulous. Have you gotten the pregnancy waddle yet? I think I started waddling around 30 weeks but maybe I was just carrying really low…
Are you growing out your bangs? You look very cute both ways, but I LOVE your bangs from earlier in your pregnancy. Every time I saw a pic with those bangs, I wanted to cut myself some.
Swaddling is awesome.
Good luck on the gestational test. Remember if you fail the one hour, you get to do the 3 hour. Did they tell you not to eat after midnight? My hospital policy was nothing to fast for like 8 or 12 hours before the test. Make sure you know their policy, I even called my hospital to make sure. I didnt want to risk failing it because I had not followed the rules.
LOVE the socks and hat.
i am growing them out- my face is fuller now and the straight across bangs made my face look wider, so i’m rolling with this for a little while
Skylar was 38w 1d. Everyone says first babies don’t usually come early and I kept saying, no but I really think she’s going to. And they’re like, oh, every mom feels that way. But I really did. And sure enough, she was early. And I was *barely* ready. Had just had my shower 2 days prior! The newborn onesie laundry wasn’t even done. So listen to that little voice ๐
And glad that the Bradley classes have been such a blessing. Everyone I know who’s done Bradley has loved them and seems to have gotten so much out of the classes. Congrats! ๐ And so glad Tom is fully on board and it’s been great for him too.
You look more and more beautiful with each pregnancy picture.
I just read the link about the woman’s sister who lost her baby, and it was one of the saddest things I’ve ever read. ๐
I swore by swaddling. I swaddled my first until he was 6 months old! My second was swaddled until he rolled from his back to belly at 3 months. Have you read the Happiest Baby on the Block books? My friend teaches this class and we all swear by this book. ๐
Isn’t Nordstrom Rack just the best?!
And that little burrito baby is ADORABLE! I giggled. So cute.
Aghhhh so close!!!
I “had a feeling” she was going ot come at 38 weeks too. 1st time moms are more likely to go post term (something with our bodies not going through it before and our uterus, and due dates) so my best advice…expect the longest. Ella came at 41 weeks! I drove myself crazy the last 2 weeks would hate to see you do it. I understand not being able to wait…believe me…and who knows, maybe it will happen for you but if you expect longer and it’s earlier then a nice little surprise (fully cooked early of course).
I need to email you I have a couple cute things set aside for the little fitnessista baby
Your belly is amazing!! It’s crazy how much it has changed since week 20. Can it really get much bigger?!?! Either way, you wear it well!!! Loving the progress!!!
Hi Gina! I have been a reader for the past several months but rarely ever comment … just want to say I love your blog and have loved following your pregnancy! I saw your comments about the swaddle and have to say it was the best thing ever! I couldn’t believe how much longer our daughter would sleep when she was swaddled … I’m sure others have already recommended it, but you should check out the Miracle Blanket. It’s built for swaddling and holds them in it really snug so it can’t come loose (as our little one got bigger and stronger she would break out of her swaddle while she was sleeping and it would wake her up). Just a suggestion ๐ Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!
Swaddling works because deep pressure input (caused by the arms/legs being pressed against the body with the tight wrap) is calming and organizing to the central nervous system. The same techniques are used for children (and adults) with disabilities. Temple Grandin and her invention of the squeeze machine is the same concept! I’m an occupational therapist and use deep pressure daily to regulate my students and bring them down to a functional level.
Happy wrapping!
You look so incredibly beautiful and happy. I love how prepared you guys are already. That will be me in about six years when I’m ready to have kids!
You look great, as always!
I had a flat belly button my whole pregnancy, yours may stay that way.I was kinda sad that mine didn’t pop, like I was “done”. Lol
I and everyone else thought I’d have her early, she came 2 days ahead, not 2 weeks like we all thought! ๐
You are looking great! Swaddling is the best! And it makes it really easy if you use a blanket that has velcro on it. My kids always used to break out of the regular blankets, but the velcro ones held them in nice and tight ๐
I had a feeling he’d be early, too… I’ve had 2 nights of prodomal labor with very painful contractions, loose bowels and lots of BH for 2 weeks straight.. but 38+7 right now and no baby yet! He’s snug in there so far. ๐ I do still hope he’ll be a few days early at least, but I am a first timer so he may well be late too!
You are a very pretty mommy-to-be!
Aww look at all those baby clothes! So adorable! She’s gonna be a little fashionista!
And I know I’ve said this before but you are the cutest pregnant woman I’ve ever seen! Its crazy you’re so far along, I feel like you just announced you were pregnant!
I just read that New Perspective link and wow, how sad. It definitely reminds you to appreciate everything that comes along with the journey, even the not so good things.
You look so beautiful Gina!
I feel it has to be said….YOUR ARMS LOOK AMAZING! I mean seriously. Just gorgeous! I love your pictures, you are just the epitome of health and vibrance! I can only hope to look half as good as you and I’m not even pregnant!! ๐
thank you, brittany <3
My daughter which was my first hated being swaddled she would freak out and scream we being new parents took a while to figure it out she loved her arms out she still at the age of 6 sleeps all spread out my son our 2nd on the other hand was the opposite ! Good Luck my daughter was a week early I was thrilled!
I was just at nordstrom rack yesterday guurrrl! ๐ got me a pair of new joe’s! and other tops AND new opi nail polish…like khaki green. then went across the street to DSW. and got me a new pair of shoes. felt.so.good. i know you will too! ๐
I just wrote my 24 week update and said a lot of similar things- mostly the energy highs and lows. I thought I was superwoman at the beginning of this week and ended up feeling really run down from Wednesday on..sometimes I just forget I’m pregnant and try to do too much. I need a trip to the Rack too. New shoes are calling my name, my feet are getting too big for my old ones!
Aren’t you just adorable! ?
I swaddled my son until he was 10 months old, as it helped him sleep and also calmed him. I used the Swaddle Me wraps as he was a bit of a Houdini with other wraps I tried (yes, he even managed to get out of the Miracle Blanket as well).
I always had my belly button throughout my pregnancy. I was hoping for it to be flat or pop out, but it didn’t happen. I didn’t look that big either, and being quite tall, I probably carried differently.
It has been great following you through your pregnancy and you loook absolutely gorgeous ๐
you look just great ๐
haha, like wrapping a burrito, so funny!
those two links are very emotional and I love both of them.
btw: I did ur short cardio workout video today and itยดs great! I could def feel my thighs!
Girl! You look amazing and glowing. I can’t believe you are already 28 weeks! Does it blow your mind a little? I am sure that your test will go well tomorrow, and I am sending you all my love for the blood robbing. Yay shopping reward!
Just a product tip, if your baby kicks out of swaddling blankets (ours was such a Houdini-ette! It was incredible how fast she could wriggle out of a super tight swaddle!)…anyway, we loved the Miracle-Blankets. Our friends liked Kiddopatamus (?) or something. Anyway, just something to keep in mind if you have to cross that bridge!
And yay, 3rd tri! For me, at 35 weeks time seemed to sllloooooooooooooooow down. Holy crap. I felt like I had entered another dimension.
I had the feeling with both my kids that I was going early. Turned out to be 5 weeks early for both of them. My son was my first pregnancy and I told everyone I ‘felt’ I was going early. With my daughter, I also said the same thing. I also said I ‘felt’ that she’d be a C-section. I was right. My water broke 5 weeks early and she was still in breech position. If you get that feeling ya never know…you might be right. ๐
You’re in your third tri! Yay!!!! It feels like it’s going by so quickly! I’m nearing the end and so are you ๐ And I saw the second video before and I cried too haha. I’ve been such a happy crier lately!
I’m going to second a couple of things. A) you are adorable. B) get a miracle blanket or one of the sleep sacks with velcro. The A&A wraps are good when first born, but she will soon be busting out of them.
I would love to hear what the pilot’s response was! I was the opposite to you at first, I was incredibly scared of giving birth and the thought of an epidural really put my mind at ease. My husband was dead against any drugs, but purely because he thought “women are made for it” and that I was piking out which upset me even more. Now I am 24 weeks pregnant, I am far more accepting of the birth process and really want to go natural myself now. My husband has since done a turnaround and is far more sympathetic with the growing bump and thinks anything I want, he wants too (hurray!). Anyway, I’m sure the pilot’s response was not “because women are made for it” and much more heartfelt so I’d love to hear it if you’re willing to share!
PS I like the new hair look, the longer bangs (or fringe, as we call it) are lovely and I hear you on the face filling out!
PPS Have you seen One Born Every Minute? Have just started watching the series here in Aus and it’s great, although a bit scary at times.
Gina, you are absolutely gorgeous. I think you are truly sweet and generous to share the experience and pictures with your readers…
I love the clothes. That was the first thought that popped into my mind after hearing you would be having a girl… she is going to go wiiiild with the shopping!!! The clothes are just ridiculously cute…I hope you have all the fun in the world dressing up your little angel. ๐
Thank you for keeping us posted!!! ๐ So happy you’re doing well!
Gina- Those links were certainly “as advertised”. I got the chills during both in very different ways. I think its good to hear stories like that because it does give you a second to stop and think how blessed we all are and to stop worrying about other things… Thanks for passing along!
Your hair is getting soo long!! Its so pretty….maybe i should get preggo just to have kardashian hair LOL and I agree your arms are looking amazing lady.
Good luck with the diabetes test tomorrow!
Swaddling is amazing! We have a little houdini on our hands. I totally recommend the SwaddleMe blankets because they velcro. Only ones she can’t get out of.
You still look the same except for your little cantalope! I remember the watermelon picture you took that time. The swaddling looks like an eggroll too. Hope your tests went well.
The Happiest Baby on the Block is genius!!!
I loved (still do!) Happies Baby on The Block – such a great book/resource! Swaddling changed everything for us – my nephew, niece, and daughter were all champion swaddlers. The moment they were burrito-ed, they hit the sack. A tip; the velcro ones worked really well when Haley was teeny tiny. Once she hit 3 months we moved to the Miracle Blanket. It is a miracle!
