Meg: Hair Salad

I have a veeery interesting recipe to share with you. This isnโ€™t a delicious Fitnessista recipeโ€ฆitโ€™s a salad dressingโ€ฆfor your head.

Hereโ€™s the back-story: My ends have been incredibly dry this summer. I donโ€™t abuse my heat tools and I havenโ€™t been in the pool very much lately but they are sad and crispy. I have tried deep conditioning, but nothing seems to work!

When in doubt, check Pinterest (my new favorite phrase). I found a home remedy for dry hair! Warning: it doesnโ€™t look pretty. Smell wise? Not too bad! Although, my mom did walk by me and say, โ€œYum, you smell like a salad!โ€โ€ฆnot sure if thatโ€™s bad or not. Hereโ€™s the process:

Youโ€™ll need:

Photo2 2ย The Process:

Photo3 1

Mash avocado and mix in the egg and oil. Tip: Mash your avocado as fine as you can! The chunks do not look cute in your hairโ€ฆtrust me.

Photo4

Smear that yummy mixture into your hair starting at the ends. This part isnโ€™t pretty. My loving fiancรฉ was cheering me on, and commenting on how gross it looked. Pff.

Photo5 1

Soak in your hair for 30 minutes. Rinse out and cleanse your hair with shampoo. I skipped conditioner for the night.

Tadaa!

Photo6 1ย I didnโ€™t mind the messy process and the smell was mild and natural. This โ€œat homeโ€ treatment gets two thumbs up from me! My hair feels silky and hydrated. A step in the right direction, Iโ€™d say! Win.

Would you ever try a home concoction?

Xo-Meg

Love it! I’m in the same boat as you now that my keratin treatment has worn off… sad, brittle ends. I’ll be trying this recipe soon, thanks Meg!

It looks like guacamole for your hair! so cool. thanks for the tip!

a hugely, HUGELY important step you forgot to include meg — rinse your hair with COLD water. I tried the egg trick once and rinsed with my normal hot-hot temperature water, and not only did it COOK THE EGG in my hair, but I smelled like eggs for two days. TAKE HEED!!!

      Oh my gosh! Too funny!

Omg! I used warm and nothing like that happened. Thanks for the tip!!

mmmm, yummay! for the hair – love it! also, I recently read some posts on the “no ‘poo” movement (that’s sham”poo” not, ya know, the other kind). apparently, baking soda (for washing) and ACV (for conditioning) works wonders on the hair. I’m not into smelling like ACV but *supposedly a brown sugar rinse post-ACV soak makes the hair smell delish. I’ve yet to try this out, but just putting it out there in case someone else is brave enough!

this fellow amanda has been no poo since february with great results! i’ve grown so much new hair, and i lose so little now when i comb it out wet. i actually don’t even do the baking soda thing – i tried but it dried things out. i just do water and then an acv rinse. i put like 1.5 tablespoons of acv + 1-2 drops of tea tree oil (takes the edge off the vinegar smell) in a 20 oz water bottle, then fill it up with water. that lasts me a couple of washes. i’ve done the brown sugar scrub a few times, it’s a nice treat. but mostly it’s just massage the scalp with finger pads, rinse well, vinegar rinse, rinse VERY well with cool water, the end! my hair is very happy.

I bet this would work well on my kinky curly hair. I would probably also add honey…

I will have to give this a whirl! Funnily enough I’m reading this with a warm towel on my head while I let some coconut oil work it’s magic…. Hopefully!

    • Meg on August 3, 2012 at 11:12 am

      I’ll have to try that!

What a great idea! It does look like it would be a messy process, but your hair looks so much softer at the end. I might give this a try when winter rolls around and my hair starts feeling the effects of the dry, dry air.

wow, your hair looks amazing after!! i’m def going to try this soon!!

Did it feel like there was any residue left behind? Or did it totally wash clean? My hair is so thin, that any residue really weighs it down.

    • Meg on August 3, 2012 at 11:13 am

It felt completely clean, just be thorough when you rinse/shampoo!

Another excellent option is using mayonnaise. Drench your hair with mayo, pile it on top of your head, wrap with saran wrap then a towel, and sit for 15 – 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water, then shampoo/condition, style and usual and enjoy your shiny, silky hair!

    • Ashley on August 5, 2012 at 12:27 am

we had to do this once when we were little kids and our cousins gave us lice (YUCK). i guess mayo suffocates them – unknown to us it does wonders for hair, after i rinsed my hair felt AMAZING. i did smell like pasta/potato salad after. ๐Ÿ™‚

I use home concoctions every day! In fact, I’ve been using a mix of coffee grounds, honey, lavender essential oil, and tea tree oil to wash my face every day for the past year or so and my skin has never looked better!

    • Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin on August 3, 2012 at 2:04 am

One of my friends does a similar mix for her skin and says the same thing!! I need to try this!

I’ve seen lots of recipes similar to that from but I cannot bring myself to put egg in my hair. Thankfully coconut oil works wonders on my fine wavy hair. I put coconut oil on my dry hair at night and in the morning I shampoo it out (usually rinse and repeat) and then condition and style as usual. It makes my hair soft and healthy and if I don’t have time I leave it on 30 min before I shower. But your hair looks great after the mask I just don’t think I can put egg in my hair lol

Ha!! I’m currently letting this concoction set. The look on my hubby’s face when he saw me doing this was priceless! He saw me making it and asked me what I was doing. I told him it was a beauty secret.
Hubs: “You’re not gonna put that on your face, are you?”
Me: “Eww! No, that would be gross”
Hubs: “Ok good. (pause) “Then what are you doing?”
I then proceed to put it on my head. He didn’t know what to say! It. Was. Awesome.
Then to top it off, after the shock wore off, he asked if I wanted to add some tuna or chicken to it and make it a salad. So, I showed him the title of this post. We got a good laugh.
Off to rinse!!! Thanks Meg ๐Ÿ™‚

    Do you have ยซombreยป hair?

    • Meg on August 3, 2012 at 11:16 am

I do, though it’s slowly growing out and I haven’t re-done it for a while. I’m going back to all one color in the fall ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Eli on August 3, 2012 at 6:54 am

I did try something couple of years back, but never since… You’r trial made me want to give it another go!:)

  17. Ashley @Hop Skip Jump on August 3, 2012 at 8:38 am

Great concoction! I’ve seen a similar one and I really do need to try it. In the past I’ve put mayo in my hair for about 30 minutes and then washed it out with shampoo and conditioner. That definetly does the trick as well.

  18. Jessica on August 3, 2012 at 9:52 am

I’d LOVE to try this. A friend of mine is really into homemade beauty products and this one seems so easy! Thanks for sharing!

  19. Amy on August 3, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Wow I reckon I’ll have to give this a go and perhaps try avocado for the first time ever as I’ve never got round to giving this superfood a go! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Stacy on August 4, 2012 at 6:29 pm

I have tried mayo in the past. It has been so long since I tried this, I can’t remember if it was bad or not.

  21. kari on August 4, 2012 at 11:40 pm

i like that and i will need to try this one next time i wash my hair. thanks Meg!

  22. Sarah on August 5, 2012 at 3:13 pm

This is actually a common thing done in India (not that i live there but my parents are from there). Sometimes we add yogurt (whole milk! Not the wimpy skim stuff), coconut milk, and I almost ALWAYS add henna, which I buy in India when I go. Actually, people in India will go so far as to shave their baby girl’s hair and put this on her head every day. Needless to say these kids have awesome hair.
But I aint doin’ that to my daughter any time soon. And if I can make a wild guess, neither will you.

  23. Heather on August 31, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Does your hair need to be damp before you smear this in there or just dry? Going to give it a try today, my hair needs it desperately!!

    • Fitnessista on September 1, 2013 at 11:53 am

      i would do it damp!
