Spring 2014 workout playlist

Hi friends <3

I finally took my first studio yoga class since weโ€™ve moved here, and Iโ€™m pretty sure itโ€™s one of my new yoga hOMes. Many readers have recommended Happy-U Namaste in Ocean Beach, and I knew that I wanted to give it a try. Itโ€™s right across the street from my beloved Tiki port, and while waiting for my acai bowl, Iโ€™ll see quite a few people walking in and out of the studio with yoga mats strapped to their backs. I decided to finally give it a whirl, and LOVED it. I took one of their mixed level vinyasa classes, and was blown away by by the beautiful space. From the outside, itโ€™s very hard to tell what the studio looks like. Inside, itโ€™s like a tranquil, clean and inviting oasis. Itโ€™s beautifully furnished -with bountiful buddhas- and new wood floors. They also had a yellow lab chilinโ€™ in the lobby, which was instant bonus points for me ๐Ÿ˜‰ Our instructor was fantastic, and just like one of my favorite Tucson instructors, she sang during savasana. I had to give myself the โ€œdonโ€™t cryโ€ pep talk.

After class:

Noodle is feeling better but still wants to be held a lot. Iโ€™ll take it <3

Speaking of noodles, dinner was courtesy of the Italian wonderpot. Itโ€™s ridiculously fast to put together, and the final result tastes like it took hours to put together. Itโ€™s definitely become one of my go-to family meals:

Italian wonderpot 1 of 1

(The sauce reduces and the noodles soak it up as they cook.. and it is glorious)

Itโ€™s been nice to change up my workouts and try new studios, even though I still enjoy my solo sweat seshes. I had a lovely 8-mile run along the beach, and I didnโ€™t even remember to turn on my music until I hit the turnaround point and was heading back. I spruced up the olโ€™ playlist a little, and thought Iโ€™d share it for those of you looking for new songs or have races on the horizon.

Hope you enjoy!

How long until you found your yoga home? Any crazy yoga stories? Iโ€™ll never forget my first Valdosta yoga class. The instructor was like, โ€œHere you can do triangle. Or sit on the floor and do a forward fold. Or make a butterfly.โ€ What? PS If youโ€™re in Tucson please take a class at Session Yoga for me. I miss it!

Favorite summer workout song?? ๐Ÿ™‚

Today Iโ€™m teaching two Zumba classes and have two interviews (barre and personal training) this week. Fingers crossed <3

Have an amazing day and Iโ€™ll see ya later today with a healthy new breakfast recipe.

xoxo

I love doing hot yoga and I had to try out a few different studios before I found one that I decided to stick with. I’m also picky with who my instructors are. If they’re not willing to help me fix my form when they see me struggling, then I probably won’t see that instructor again. I cash out a lot of money for hot yoga so I think I have the right to be picky with who I go to!

Good luck with your interviews this week! How exciting!

    That wonderpot recipe sounds amazing!!

I tried a couple yoga studios when I first moved but I just didn’t vibe with them, especially since I LOVED my old spots. I then found the place that I continue to go to 2 years later and at which I did my teacher training. I think I knew it was my “hOMe” when I saw that the folks taking and teaching the classes were genuinely good people. Sure some were super bendy yoginis who could grace the cover of Yoga Journal doing a headstand, but the culture of the studio did/does not emphasize how you look, what you’re wearing, or competition. I think that is a very important for any kind of studio to have.

Good luck on your interviews!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I like the idea in yoga that the instructor is there to make suggestions rather than tell you what to do, since yoga practice is so personal but triangle versus forward fold versus butterfly is kind of strange!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:17 pm

i totally agree. none of the poses she suggested had anything to do with the other ones though!

Great list! I am obsessed with the Tiesto remix of All of Me. Also currently loving Tiesto “Red Lights” and Pitbull’s “Wild Wild Love”. Nothing like some good tunes to boost that energy level during the workout.

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:16 pm

it isn’t a workout for me until pit bull has played haha

I love that All of Me remix!! This is an awesome playlist!

  14. Lauren on May 13, 2014 at 2:34 pm

Have you ever made that meal with gluten free pasta. I’ve made it with regular pasta and love it but I’ve been fearful to try a gluten free pasta b/c they don’t always cook the same.

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:14 pm

i have… it definitely doesn’t have the same texture

  15. Addison on May 13, 2014 at 2:42 pm

Finding a yoga home is so hard! When I first moved and was trying out new studios, I went to class where the instructor came over to adjust my downward dog (I usually LOVE the adjustments). But I couldn’t feel anything differently in what she was trying to do. She then used me as an example to the whole class of how “not” to do downward dog, though I still don’t know what the right way she was going for was. I haven’t gone back there since.

I really wish I could be a yogi. It just feels too slow and weird for me. Believe me, I’m a wanna be though! I’m just a mover and shaker kinda girl! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:13 pm

you need to try vinyasa! you move through the poses instead of holding them forever

  19. Elana on May 13, 2014 at 3:43 pm

I once took a Kundalini class at a yoga studio here in San Diego that is also a bar/tea house!? The class was so nutty and I felt uncomfortable the whole time with people talking and carrying on in the front and the instructor yelling commands at me! For Savasana she used a VERY loud gong over and over and over again, which might have been the loudest most uncomfortable 5 (but it felt like FOREVER!) minutes of my life. I kept praying it would be over so I could leave. I kept wondering if it would be rude for me to get up and walk out except there was only like 5 people in the class. Oh it was the worst! Not relaxing at all! I will have to try the place in OB, I have never been there ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:13 pm

interesting!!! and the gong thing made me laugh so hard

Oh man, I had to go ahead and make a mini batch of Italian Wonderpot for lunch. I’ve had it Pinned forever! I used whole wheat spaghetti (reduced the cook time), added in sliced, browned chicken sausage and used a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies for lots of heat!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:12 pm

      that sounds outta control amazing

  23. Alex @ Kenzie Life on May 13, 2014 at 4:55 pm

I hate to say that I have almost given up on finding a yoga home in Colorado, though I haven’t tried any in the hippie city I live in now. I had a great studio in Philly that was the first one I ever went to and it was amazing. The price was right, the atmosphere was sophisticated but calming and not pretentious, and they had great spirituality and mind-body type classes taught there as well. However, they went bankrupt and closed down a week after I moved to Colorado. I’m not a fan of Core Power type classes and the handful of studios I did try I wasn’t a fan of (in one, people from the street could stop and watch you through the window, which is just weird to me). I want to start looking again though! I miss it!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2014 at 5:12 pm

you would think colorado would be a haven for yoga studios! doesn’t dave farmar teach out there? (not sure what part of colorado!) hope you can find a new yoga home soon
      xoxo

      • Alex @ Kenzie Life on May 13, 2014 at 5:24 pm

That’s what I thought! I just recently moved to Boulder so there must be some good ones around here (admittedly I haven’t tried any in Boulder proper). All the ones I tried were ridiculously expensive (more so than the ones I saw on the East Coast!). Thank you, me too! Have a good one, Gina!

        • Samantha on May 13, 2014 at 6:16 pm

Amy Ippoliti is based out of Boulder and she’s one if the worlds nest. Have you tried her studio, 90 monkeys?

  29. Pip {Cherries & Chisme} on May 14, 2014 at 10:47 am

Wow that’s a post yoga glow if I’ve ever seen one! Love that ๐Ÿ™‚ I chose CrossFit over yoga as I couldn’t afford to do both ๐Ÿ™ but my old yoga studio which I loved has just moved away this week so I guess it sort of worked out… When I have a job that actually pays me my dream workouts would be CrossFit, yoga and a couple of runs each week ๐Ÿ™‚ only a year of postgrad to get through first!

    Good luck in your interviews!!

I tried your HIIT the Hill Workout the other day (for some reason, I can’t find the post to comment there). For the last 10 minutes of 30 Hard: 30 Recovery, is it OK to recover by stepping to the side of the treadmill? It feels cumbersome to keep increasing/decreasing the speed every 30 seconds. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2014 at 11:05 am

i start to increase or decrease about 5 seconds before the official interval starts. i think it works well that way and you can keep moving the whole time. hope this helps a little

  31. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on May 16, 2014 at 1:26 am

Livi look so big with you holding her like that! I never listen to music when I workout. Weird, I know!

  32. Annie B on May 16, 2014 at 11:19 pm

My most “intriguing” yoga experience was in a study in San Luis Obispo during college. The instructor was a young guy, wearing cutoff denim shorts, a flannel, and a hipster beanie and talked like a beach bro. The woman behind me realllly relaxed…. and released countless umm… “highly audible gas movements” throughout the class. Needless to say, it wasn’t a very zen experience, but definitely a memorable one! ๐Ÿ™‚

I plan to make the wonder pot tonight! Yum! But when I went to the recipe link it had the ingredients but no cooking instructions. Looks like you just throw it all in the pot but how long does it take? Bring it to a boil then simmer? Covered/uncovered? The link to the full recipe was spam ๐Ÿ™
