Not-Tuna Salad
Hi guys! Howโs your day been? Loved reading your comments about movies that affected you. Looks like I *might* have to watch Earthlings nextโฆ we shall see.
The eats today โsince I was sick all night last night- have been lackluster
(+ another waffleโฆ. they were perfect for my achy stomach)
Blue smoothie
(couldnโt finish it)
but the MAIL has been stellar!
Natural Butterscotch extract, from my HLS roomie and friend Sabrina
Thank you, friend for saving me from the Red 40 I consumed this past weekend ๐
Wasabi peas, figs and almond butter with flax from Sana
(Iโm trading some roons for the TJs goodies. Thanks, Sana!)
aaaaaand Everyday Raw Desserts ๐
Iโve been waiting for this book to come out since last year, when I attended and worked at 105degrees. Matthew Kenney is my favorite raw chef everrrrr so I canโt wait to try some of these recipes. Mayjah thanks to his publicist for sending me a copy ๐
Iโm feeling a lot better now (think the lovely mail helped) and really want to share the Not-Tuna Salad I munched yesterday with yaโll. I was inspired to use the parsnips for the *meat* by Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and the result was fabulous. Very light, robust and very similar to the real thang.
Not-Tuna Salad
Serves 1
-3 parsnips, peeled and cut into large chunks
-1 carrot, peeled and cut into large chunks
-1/8 onion
-dried dill
-garlic powder
-Dulse or dulse flakes (with give it that slight *fishy* taste)
-sea salt and pepper
-EVOO, canola oil mayo or Veganaise (optional)
-Dijon mustard
-White vinegar or lemon juice
1. Place the carrots, parsnip and onion into a mini food chopper and pulse into large chunks.
2. Add the salt, pepper, garlic, dulse, vinegar/lemon juice, fat of choice (EVOO, canola oil mayo or Veganaise), squirt of Dijon mustard and dill to the mini chopper- pulse until all ingredients are fully combined. Leave the mixture slightly chunky.
3. Serve atop bread or salad greens and feast ๐
Please let me know if any of you give this a try! <3
Iโm off to get my stuff ready for Orlando โ we leave tomorrow night- and then do some yogaaaaaaa.
Have a lovely night!
xoxo,
Gina
i’m sorry you’re still not feeling awesome! the blueberry smoothie looks killer though.. ๐
Glad you are feeling better <3 I don't think I've ever had (or seen!) a parsnip…heheh But it does look verrrry tasty ๐ And the less mercury the better in my book ๐
-Laur
Whoops I guess I read your post too fast –hope you FEEL BETTER soon! ๐
I’m glad you are feeling better – and I hope a full recovery is coming to you soon ๐
I love getting goodies in the mail too — it just brightens my day!
wow, gina, this looks awesome!! does it really taste like tuna? or tuna-ish at least? sounds great, and i love parsnips!
yup definitely tuna-ish!
Oh em gee… I want some butterscotch extract!
Hope you feel better!
Question on the recipe: I am not much of a fish person at all. If I leave out the dulse, will it not have the fish taste?
yup, it will taste almost like a dill-y coleslaw ๐
Sorry you were sick last night – yuk! NOT fun. You made out like a bandit with today’s mail – rock on!
I love fake tuna salads! Not that I don’t love *real* tuna, but this is much more packed lunch friendly. ๐
Okay Gina, you have to watch the trailer before you watch the movie for Earthlings. I couldn’t even make it through five seconds of the trailer without crying, and haven’t worked up the nerve to watch the whole film yet ๐
wow. ok. good to know- thank you!
hope you start to feel better! i like this fake tuna salad idea — especially for work when i always get so self conscious about the smell!
Do we have the same thing? I’ve been feeling so blah recently. I didn’t think I would be able to eat a bowl of oatmeal. I waited two hours and I was able to barely eat the whole thing, then went back to feeling icky. I hope you feel better soon ๐
maybe! that’s what i said to tom this morning: i don’t even want oatmeal, and that NEVER happens! hope you feel better soon too <3
The salad sounds really interesting and I hope you feel better soon Gina!
Oh no, sorry you were so sick!! I hope it didn’t turn you off from Indian food! ๐ Glad you are feeling better though. Take care of yourself girl! ๐
nothing will turn me away from my beloved cuisine ๐ haha
Your salad looks great G. My fav part is that you can whip it up FAST… Hope you feel like you’re spunky fitnessista self tomorrow!
SHUT UP! (not really) But I talk about Earthlings in my post tonight and we are probably going to watch it tonight. Pea Daddy watched the trailer at work and said he was in tears.
I hope your tummy feels better soon. Maybe a nice juice with some ginger?
Blue smoothie looks delish!
Hope you’re feeling better!
Ugh, I am sick now too and I’m SO annoyed because I never get sick…time to use the neti pot! Feel better!
feel better too!!
Chickpeas are also great for mock tuna salad – they give the fishy taste without dulse!
YUM! good to know- thank you!
I was up all night sick also… I’ve eaten toast today. ๐ I am craving some chilled grapefruit juice, and Jason is finding me some on his way home ๐
sorry you were sick – hope you’re all better by now!
I am SO going to make this faux tuna (not tonight tho), I will let you know how it turns out!
I love that that tuna salad is nut-free and I love dulse!
love dulse too ๐
Interesting. What’s that dulse thing exactly? Hope you feel better soon ๐ Take care!
it’s a sea vegetable- kind of like nori, but saltier.

hi gina ๐
have you ever watched this ?
not a documentary, but a very inspiring piece nonetheless ! hope you enjoy.
<3 take care and feel better !
That was so nice of Sabrina!
I can’t stand dulse:( I wish I liked it, but it smells way too much like fish food flakes ๐
i couldn’t even get past the first 15 minutes of Earthlings. it is so SAD and made me hug my fur babies extra tight!! as i watched dogs being killed by GAS chambers i was bawling and my 7 month old puppy was licking my tears. it’s so tough to watch and anyone who could make it through that whole movie is BRAVE. i probably will never finish it because i know i will not make it through. and also there should be stricter punishments for all the animal abusers it’s so sick!
p.s. i like your skeleton plate
thank you ๐
omg. i don’t think i could watch that
First off, I love the skull plate:):)
Secondly, Im glad you are feeling better!
Third, Stop by St. Augustine and we can do some yoga:)
hey gina, where do you get the dulse flakes?
sunfood – i’m trying to get it in my opensky store, too! ๐
Please do see Earthlings. SO hard to watch, but very necessary to know about (in my opinion).
Glad you are feeling better! ๐
Hope you feel better.
That is far and beyond the best almond butter I have ever tried. Glad you are feeling somewhat better and hope you continue to recover!
Hope you feel better soon. Achy tummy or not…waffles are always good! ๐
Yay! I am so happy you got them when you needed to be cheered up!!!
I just knew there was a reason I’ve been eyeing parsnips @ the store lately — this looks awesome! And I have to go to the store anyway today.
Ahh im glad to hear youre feeling better!!! and can i say how much I LOVE that plate/dish that your waffle is on! it looks like one of those day of the dead mexican celebration things. sooo cool! ๐
i’m obsessed with mexican skeletons ๐
I didn’t think I’d be able to make this because so many raw recipes use cashews, so I was really excited to see that this one doesn’t! ๐ I definitely want to try it!
Haha, that skull plate is awesome! The dulse scares me though :-s x
Okay I saw the un-tuna recipe & had to try it! I altered it a bit though based on what I had on hand. I used turnips instead of parsnips and I didn’t have nor had ever heard of dulse. I also added a splash-n-dash of my fav dressing Hendrickson’s Original Sweet Vinegar &Olive Oil. I think it looks like an “un-crab”salad myself ๐
yummmm!!!
That butterscotch extract flavor stuff is great idea…I’m going to look for it…..and I was just like you with my SunWarrior! They are such ginormous bags! I love it – woot – I hope you get the Ormus greens too and do a promo, I’d be down to try those- and the Activated Barley
