A needly nap

Hi friends 🙂

Wow.

Holy wow amazeballs.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for your incredible comments today. As expected, there were some that didn’t agree with my choice to eat poultry again (which is totally cool), but I appreciate all of your support to listen to my body and follow my heart.

Someone who is a HUGE supporter of my choice to eat chicken again:

bella

Bella will do anything for chicken.

Today has been bueno 🙂

I *tried* to take my favorite spin class, wearing my new Run: Dash Crops

 IMG00555-20110105-1055

Reflective ruffles?! Yes please 🙂

The gym started doing something where they’re supplying all of the music to the instructors. The instructors can’t use their own music! So after one song of lame-o techno and then “Hey There, Delilah”, I peaced out.

Some of today’s eats:

Brown rice cereal (lurve) with almond milk and blueberries

cereal

Salad beast with chickpeas, goat cheese, arugula, tomato, garlic gold, balsamic and basil

salad

Amazing 😀

I got my hair did and also went to my first acupuncture treatment

acupuncture.124101315_std Source

Yep, the biggest needle phobe in the world got acupuncture.

The verdict? I LOVED it. My homeopath said it was a good idea to add acupuncture into my routine (along with more massages.. tragedy haha), so I figured I’d give it a whirl.

I talked to the acupuncturist about my hormone imbalances and some pain that I’ve had in my back, and then was led to a room with recliners, dim lighting and meditation music playing. The place I went to practices acupuncture in a community environment, so you’re being treated at the same time as other people and can feed off of their peaceful energy.

I laid down in a recliner and he told me that the needles wouldn’t hurt, they may be warm, or have some tingling and generally wouldn’t feel anything. He was right for the most part- 99% of the needles didn’t hurt, but one made me see stars. The the pain quickly went away. (He said that the particular point was a very intense acupuncture spot but as long as it wasn’t still hurting, I was good) After placing the needles (I had about 3 on each arm, 2 or 3 on each leg, one in between my eyes and one on my head), he put a blanket over me and said to call the acupuncturists over if I needed anything, or if anything was hurting or bothering me, and to take about an hour. I took a peaceful needly nap 🙂

Have you tried acupuncture before? Did you enjoy it?

Well I’m off to dance, but I hope you’re all having a great night <3

See ya in the morning with this week’s WMOW!

xoxo

Gina

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 1:35 am

i love asics and have heard good things about brooks, too. i recommend going to a running shop to have your foot measured and your stride checked out to see what they suggest for your foot and style of running

I love love love acupuncture. I wish it was cheaper, but you know, someone’s got to make a living out of it. 🙂 I’ve been meaning to go see one again soon for back pains.

  3. Coralie on January 6, 2011 at 2:23 am

I tried acupuncture…I had recently fallen down stairs carrying my then two year old, and didn’t know it at hte time but had two broken ribs. I just went to a regular clinic for muscle relaxers and the doctor decided to try acupuncture. she stuck a bunch of needles into my hand and asked if my back still hurt. UM NO BECAUSE MY HAND IS FRICKEN KILLING ME!
so, no more acupuncture for me.

i love your blog and fully support your chicken choices 🙂

The first time I had acupuncture was 2 days after I moved to Spain! I clearly live on the edge. It worked. I loved it! I’ll be going back!

  5. Casey Thomas on January 6, 2011 at 4:09 am

Love that you are doing whatever is right for you with your food choices. Go you! It’s all about empowering yourself I believe.
    Your meals look divine!
I’ve tried acupuncture and loved it also. Although the first time I tried it I was freaked out when I walked out of the session with a pin still in my back that I didn’t find until I sat in my car!! Hahaha

  6. Catherine on January 6, 2011 at 4:40 am

I tried acupuncture once, and I’m sorry to say I really didn’t like it. The energy readings seemed a little cheesy to me, and completely without scientific backing. Holding a vial of magic water will tell you if I’m allergic to a substance? DNA/RNA is a substance someone can be allergic to?

Also, staying completely still for half an hour with a bunch of pins stuck in me was torturous.

That said, I know acupuncture is helpful for many people. Just not my cup o’tea. At least with that doctor, anyway.

    • Karen W. (WrightLifeTCM) on January 6, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Hi Catherine! Just a quick clarification for yourself and other readers- holding vials of substances/ muscle testing/ aura reading / etc… is not Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture (and herbal medicine, tuina, cupping, etc) is a modality of treatment under the medical diagnostic and treatment system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. People (whether MD’s, acupuncturists, chiropractors, yoga instructors) are definitely creative creatures and love to invent new things, so acupuncture is starting to become somewhat of a confusing treatment to the general public.

The method you described was probably NAET (Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique), and was invented by an acupuncturist, but as you said, is not a scientifically based traditional medicine.

TCM is the oldest continually recorded, evidence based medicine for the general population in the world.

No one medicine is right for everybody, I just wanted to clarify for other readers that your experience was not Traditional Chinese Medicine.

(BTW, I am a practitioner of TCM, a licensed acupuncturist and medical herbologist)

      Take care! 🙂

      • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 3:18 pm

        hey karen,
        thanks for the info!
when he poked me in the spot in my shin and i saw stars, what was that?!?

        • Karen W. (WrightLifeTCM) on January 10, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Lol! No problem- I love what I do and am happy to share info 🙂

Well, it may have been Zu San Li, the 36th point along the Stomach meridian. Was it about 3 inches below your kneecap, on the outside (lateral) side of your shin? If so, that’s the point. It’s a juicy one! It translates as “Leg Three Miles”. The mythology behind it is if a person is totally exhausted, yet must carry on in their journey, needling this point will give them the strength to continue on for 3 more miles.

If you ever need a guest blogger to do a segment on Chinese Medicine, let me know ;-). I’ll have my blog back in the game in a few days, yay!

BTW, I am a Bella stalker. Sorry about Viesa- what a hard decision, so glad it all worked out.

          • Fitnessista on January 10, 2011 at 10:38 pm

omg YES that was the spot!
i’m afraid to go back now.. my leg doesn’t hurt at all, but it freaked me out. none of the other needles hurt!
good to know, next time i put the call out for guest bloggers, send me an email!

  7. Lindsay on January 6, 2011 at 6:25 am

Hey sweet girl! I have never commented before but have been a reader for sometime now. I just wanted to say you crack me up! I love spinning and lost quite a bit of weight from going. Yesterday we had a ‘BSB and NKOTB’ mix- I thought it would be a good idea at first…..not for an entire hour though! whew!

  8. Natalie on January 6, 2011 at 6:45 am

I had a wonderful experience with accupuncture! It worked well for me and I would definitely revisit in the future.

  9. Katie on January 6, 2011 at 6:45 am

Never tried acupuncture but I did hear it was awesome, my sister in Cali has gotten itdone a couple times and loved it !

That stinks about the spin instructors not being able to pick their own music!? I would be so upset!

  10. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind on January 6, 2011 at 6:45 am

I would love to know more about your homeopath’s advice (in general). Post idea? I’ve never been to one (it’s kind of unheard of in southern Indiana), and I’m always intrigued by alternative/holistic medicine.

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 9:49 am

i’m going to do a whole post about it (probably in the spring when my treatment is over) and give my doc’s info if anyone is interested 🙂

  11. kaila @ healthy helper blog! on January 6, 2011 at 7:29 am

i have gotten acupuncture before but had a pretty bad experience. i had about 60 needles placed on me and all of them hurt pretty badly to the point where if i so much as tightened a muscle while laying down on the table, i felt extreme pain. the acupuncturist put 7 needles on my abdomen and that area was sooo sensitive! she then put a heat lamp over those 7 needles and my stomach was red for days for being burned so bad! Maybe it was the acupuncturist that made the experience bad….but i didnt really get the results I was looking for either! But i am glad you had a good experience! to each her own ;)!

  12. Cyndi @ Weightless Life on January 6, 2011 at 7:48 am

I think acupuncture would be so interesting, but there aren’t that many people here that do it. I wonder if it would help my back aches though. I think I need to do some research.

  13. rachael (peace, kale, and yoga) on January 6, 2011 at 8:00 am

I love acupuncture! I almost feel like I just worked out after an acupuncture treatment- that feeling that your blood and energy are freely flowing.

  14. Amy @ purewellnessamy on January 6, 2011 at 8:16 am

I am a true believer in the benefits of acupuncture. I think I’ve already mentioned this in a comment on a previous post, but I believe 100% that my son was conceived thanks to acupuncture. My acupuncturist is awesome. When I first started going for treatments, I was so impressed by how thoroughly he interrogated me about my health history and diet. I couldn’t believe how much time he took getting to know me! My PCP has never asked me *any* questions…other than which pharmacy I use!

I’m glad you had a good first experience and hope you reap some real benefits!

  15. malia on January 6, 2011 at 8:19 am

I don’t understand why people can’t allow people to have their own food choices! If people want to be vegans, fine, but don’t lecture others about it. Respect has to go each ways.
You should eat what’s best for you and not worry about what naysayers say.

  16. Tina on January 6, 2011 at 8:19 am

Nothing kills a workout like terrible music!! I have yet to try acupuncture, I will muster of the courage one of these days… 😉 Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

  17. Kara on January 6, 2011 at 8:28 am

Hey There Delilah is a horrible workout song, in fact it’s just a horrible song in general. Yuck! Did you acupuncturist leave any needles in? I used a share an office with a guy who had random needles left in his ear by his holistic doc and every week they’d be in a different spot. It made him look kinda punkish/emo 🙂

  18. Ali on January 6, 2011 at 8:48 am

I love those pants! I’ve never been to an acupuncturist but a few of my friends have and said they had really great experiences.

  19. Sami on January 6, 2011 at 9:04 am

i’ve always wanted to try acupuncture. especially after reading about caitlin’s (htp) husband doing it! it totally fascinates me! xo.

  20. Theresa @ActiveEggplant on January 6, 2011 at 9:16 am

I think it’s a travesty that your gym tells the instructors what music they have to use – that’s part of the “joy” of spin class – it’s individual to each instructor’s style & you find the one that fits your style best! I would definitely have called it quits too.

No acupuncture for me yet – but I’ve been hearing great things about it lately. I just might have to give it a whirl sometime!

  21. Allison @ Food For Healing on January 6, 2011 at 9:16 am

i’ve been wanting to get acupuncture for awhile, this makes me feel better about it!

Also I tried my first spin class on Tuesday and LOVED it, and then yesterday i did Bodypump.. and well, it was a love hate kind of thing last night. But i’m sure I will torture myself again next week lol

  22. Karen on January 6, 2011 at 9:17 am

Had acupuncture before and loved it. I am not sure if I loved acupuncture because it helped or because it gave me a kid free, quiet hour. Hmmmmmm

About the music – AWFUL! In my fave kickboxing class we let the instructor know whether or not we like his new music- he has a PACKED class and it is because it is difficult, he’s always adding something new and he responds to his class. I don’t know how you can do that with canned music.

  23. Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) on January 6, 2011 at 9:20 am

This is so interesting! I’ve never tried acupunture, but I want to for some of my hormonal issues & my back pain as well! So it’s great to hear your experiences. I am not afraid of needles, I have four tattoos- but I was kind of afraid it would hurt! hah. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, can’t wait to hear more!

    xo

  24. Meaghan on January 6, 2011 at 9:24 am

That’s so brave! I’ve always been terrified of needles as well — you’ll have to let us know how you feel in the upcoming days. Looking forward to the new WMOW!

  25. Mandy on January 6, 2011 at 9:26 am

Wow-Acupuncture?! I’m glad you liked it though!
That’s too bad about your spinning class! As a fitness instructor, I think I would take it personally if someone walked out. Maybe you should discuss your thoughts with the instructor or the management and tell them you are upset about the music change. I’m sure everyone else feels the same way, so it might as well be YOU to make the change;) Good luck!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 9:47 am

the teacher knows i LOVE her- i’m sure she didn’t take it personally
already have an appt with the director of group fitness 🙂

  26. Bianca @ Confessions of a Chocoholic on January 6, 2011 at 9:34 am

Yes I LOVE acupuncture! It has really helped me with my allergies (I used to get some majorly crazy hives) and even with stress management. Glad to know you had a good experience!

  27. jenna on January 6, 2011 at 9:36 am

acupuncture?? CRINGE!!!!!! oh my word…you are brave! What a week..first chicken and now needles all over your body!!??!!? are you crazy? does the pilot need to get home asap?? LOL I kid. but seriously…it didnt hurt?? seems scary to me..i’m a needle phobe!

I love your new crops! too cute! it stinks about the gym choosing their own music (seems overly controlling)! Were other people in the class mad about it? You should all complain.

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 9:46 am

i know! he leaves and a bunch of crazy things happen! haha
yes a lot of people are upset… i’m hoping they change it back! i already have an appt with the director of group fitness to see why they did it and provide feedback

  28. Stephanie S on January 6, 2011 at 10:09 am

Thank you for posting about your experience with acupuncture. I recently tried acupuncture for asthma and allergies. I was skeptical that it would help with those conditions. My first visit was a few days before Christmas, and I felt horrible. I wasn’t immediately healed, but I did feel better after my visit. What is strange to me is that I continued to improve over the holidays – without medication. I returned this week for another visit and my allergies were out of control. The second visit had a more immediate effect on me and again I continue to improve. I don’t know how it works, and I’m not sure I’m ready to sing it’s praises from the rooftops. But, I am going to continue weekly visits for a few more weeks.

I just started teaching yoga, and there was one gym that raised an eyebrow on using music in class. It would be easier to live without music in a yoga class – for a cardio class, good music is essential.

  29. Shanna, like Banana on January 6, 2011 at 11:01 am

Acupuncture has been recommended for me for my migraines. I’ve yet to try it because I’m a little scared and skeptical. Good to know it was a positive experience for you!

  30. April on January 6, 2011 at 11:05 am

I have been doing acupuncture and herbs for 3 months now (i go 2x week), and my hormones are regulating, yippee!
It really has changed my life, i wish i had started going sooner.
So glad you had a positive experience. The first TCM dr. i went to i had a bad experience, so it took me awhile to go back and now i love it. So…if at first you don’t like it, try to find another one…like anything, you have to be comfortable:)
I was freaked out in the beginning too, but now i look forward to the hour of ‘me time:)

    Good luck Gina!

I got accupuncture on my shoulder once a week for 8 weeks. I have seeerious problems with it and accupuncture was just another method I was attempting! I enjoyed the experience but found my pain returned a lot faster than it does after a deep tissue massage. Thinks it depends a lot on the specific problem.

  32. Anne @ Your Kind o Salad on January 6, 2011 at 11:40 am

I practice community acupuncture as well – I LOVE IT. It seriously saved me. I started going for anxiety; but now I go for everything! Aches, pains, sinuses; exhaustion; its truly amazing; and I actually love the community setting; its more comfy with other people around, IMO. Keep going, it only gets better!

  33. Jennifer@ Frost Bites on January 6, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I just wanna say that I love that “quote” at the end of your entry. I need to keep telling myself that more often.

  34. Emily on January 6, 2011 at 1:02 pm

That’s a great quote and an absolutely delicious looking/sounding lunch!
I’ve never done acupuncture, but would love to. I’ve never heard of community acupuncture though – will have to investigate…

  35. Clare @ Fitting It All In on January 6, 2011 at 1:15 pm

I got a 15 minute accupuncture treatment from a community place here in STL and found it very relaxing, but I don’t know that it really helped anything. I think I would have to go more than once for lasting changes!

  36. Bekah @ runtrackmind on January 6, 2011 at 1:23 pm

I found acupuncture to be a very hit or miss experience. My 1st was ok, 2nd was fantastic but the 3rd left me with 3 huge welts on my back and no explanation could be given so I never went back. Hope you find great results with treatment. -BTW love the Lululemon pants!

Gina, Im guessing you work for LA Fitness. They started this week making the instructors play music they have chosen. Many unhappy people. Hopefully they will get enough complaints and realize its not going to work.

Love those pants! I usually can’t buy Lululemon pants because they’re miles too long on me. But these might be the perfect full pant length for me! 😀

Acupuncture really intrigues me, but I’ve never tried it. It sounds so peaceful!

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 10:16 pm
