Classic kale chips and raw bloomin’ onion bread
Hiiiii 😀 How’s your Friday been? Hope you’ve had an amazing day <3
I just got back from a yoga class, which was pleasantly difficult. I love feeling like a yoga noodle afterwards, and we did all of my favorites: crow, dancer and LOTS of arm balances. Me likey.
Somehow, as always, I ended up at Whole Paycheck.
Most random trip ever: a baby watermelon, an intense green juice (all the greens + cilantro, ginger and garlic. You should have seen the Pilot’s face when he tasted it) + vanilla destined for macaroon glory
So today, I thought I’d share with you guys two of my all-time fave everyday raw recipes and my tips to take them over the top.
#1. Kale chips
I always get so peeved when I see bags of kale chips in health food stores for $12. For real? They cost MAYBE $3 or $4 to make. If I could remember to get the ingredients, I’d probably make a batch everyday. They seem to disappear from the dehydrator before they’re totally done, though 😉
For the recipe, I use *this standard* one that quite a few peeps in the raw food world follow. It’s the best of the best and super easy.
You make the cheezy coating in a blender or Vita-mix,
Plop it into a bowl
Add one large bunch of organic kale (just pick chip-sized leaves off each stem)
And using your hands, distribute the mixture so that each chip piece is well-coated, and dehydrate.
Tips to make them even better:
-To the cheezy coating, add more salt (optional), more nutritional yeast, 1/4 t chili powder and a big pinch of cayenne
-Before dehydrating, sprinkle a mixture of nutritional yeast and sea salt on top of the kale chips
#2. Raw Sandwich Bread
*Warning: this is a lot of onion. If you aren’t an onion fan, I’ll post a bread recipe for you sometime soon!
In a mini food processor, add 1/2 small rough chopped onion, 1/4 C raw sunflower seeds, a generous sprinkle of sea salt, 1 T flax and 2 T water.
Pulse well, but make sure it still has some texture.
Plop the mixture onto a Teflexx sheet
and using the back of a knife (or if you’re fancy, one of those pastry spreader thingys), spread into your bread shape of choice.
Dehydrate for 4 hours at 115*, flip and continue to dehydrate for an additional 6-12 hours, depending on how crispy you like it.
The onion dehydrates extremely well –the flavor isn’t too overpowering- and gives it an almost buttery texture.
(AMAZING with eggplant bacon as a raw blt)
Tips to make it even better:
-Add in herbs and seasonings of choice. My favorite combo is chopped fresh rosemary or basil, oregano, and thyme.
Nutritional stats for both pieces of bread:
Full of incredible nutrients and 9.5g protein! Not too shabby.
I hope you guys found these tips helpful! <3
No worries if you don’t have a dehydrator- you can make these recipes in the oven, on the lowest setting and the door slightly ajar. If you’ve been lusting for a dehydrator, make sure to follow me on OpenSky—we’ll be picking a random follower Monday morning who will receive a shiny new Excalibur dehydrator.
The Pilot asked me out on a date… so I think I’ll go get ready 😉
See ya tomorrow!
xoxo
Gina
*If there are any raw foods you’d like to learn how to make (besides macaroons, they’re a secret for now), please let me know!
I am so glad you shared the bread recipe! I will definitely be making that soon 🙂 Love onion, and can’t stop eating sunflower seeds lately…good combo!
I’m pretty sure I should win that dehydrator! hehee
Do you know, is there a good substitute for the flax for raw foods? Flax upsets my stomach almost as much as dairy… I’m thinking maybe chia?!
Thanks for such an awesome blog!! I lurveeeeeeee it!!
chia would be perfect
thank you so much for reading!
Man, I wish I had a dehydrator! I’d make the coolest stuff… like your bread… 🙂
i cant wait to make kale chips in my new dehydrator, should be here in 6-10 business days 😛 Yay. too bad i couldn’t enter your giveaway.
Love kale chips but have never tried them with cheeze sauce luckily I have both in the fridge maybe ill do a little dehydrating overnight! I would love more dehydrator recipes I hardly use mine!
I have a dehydrator…the bf uses it to dehydrate game meat. (I live in the midwest, haha!) so I’ve had the urge to dehydrate some stuff lately! What temps and stuff do I use for fruits and veggies? And what are the best ones to do? Have fun on your date!
115 is the temp you want to stay under for it to be “raw”, but if that isn’t a factor, i’d crank it up to 135 for fruits and veggies
No gov shut down!!!! Enjoy your date 🙂
YAY!!!
Love the kale chips recipe and that’s pretty much what I do and you’re right, what tons of others in the sphere do, too.
Yoga noodle after arm balances, indeed. Glad you found that nice push into noodleland but still have enough energy to go out on your date 🙂
The bread..that’s a lotta onion going on! haha! Better make sure everyone in the room was feasting on that one.
You two kids have fun tonite 🙂
You should sell macaroons!
Ahhh, the yoga noodle feeling is the best feeling ever! I like it more than any other post-workout feeling.
I love the raw sandwich idea – I definitely want to try that! 🙂 Hope you and the pilot had a great date night!!
that raw sandwich looooks goood!! i’ve made kale chips in the oven and it was good too however i so need a dehydrator!! p.s. i’ve been sorta mia bc i was in la all this week then heading to buenos aires tomorrow!!! i shall be back in 10 days!! xx
Aahh…I’m glad you asked. Recipes for the following please:

– lemon bars, pb bars, just about any type of bar
-macaro… I kid! I kid!
Thanks for the great blog!
Thanks for the bread recipe, I can’t wait to try it! I would love to see any raw recipes using a dehydrator with zucchini! 🙂
I’d love to know how to make that tart that you used to make quite often, it always looked and sounded SO good!
I’m def gonna try these in my reg. oven (fake dehydrator style) 🙂 Just followed you on open sky, I’ve never heard of it before your blog but really cool concept.
PS- loved the blog about moving/stability.. just what I needed that morning.
i so want a dehydrator now…everything sounds amazing!
LOL Gina, I can only imagine how NUTS the blog world is gonna go on the day you give out your macaroon recipe! 😉
hahah it’s on lock down 😉
Dehydrator is the best! haha
Oh kale chips and onion bread two classics and soooo good!!! Though it has been forever since I have made some, I better get on that! xoxo
aaahh you made my lust for a dehydrator to make kale chips (among other things) even greater now! They look so yummy! Hope you had fun on your date! 😉
WOW, I never would have thought you could make bread out of an onion! I hear ya on the price of store-bought kale chips. NO idea why anyone would ever pay that when they’re so easy to make yourself! I don’t have a dehydrator but I usually just make mine in the oven using the broil setting, some kale, olive oil, sea salt and pepper. I’m going to have to try this cheesy coating of yours!
I think the same thing when I see the kale chips at the store!!! They also have some macaroons (like 6) for the same price (I hope you have considered selling yours! At those prices Bella could live like the queen she is LOL!).
I would like to know more about the raw nut “cheese” folks talk about.
Everytime I see those kale chips they look so amazing I have got to try them! The bread looks great too, reminds me of bruschetta with the tomato and such on top yum!
wow I don’t think I could handle juiced garlic! all the healthy power to ya though
Do green juices taste good? Are they sweet/salty/or…? I am scared to try one because I worry that it will taste yucko
i would try a sweet one for your first time:
spinach, green apple, parsley, lemon and cucumber is always good
Now I want that dehydrator even moooore! I have seen raw bread in the super market before but I have always wanted to make it myself…not to mention I love kale chips! I might have to go get a dehydrator even if I dont’t win!
Your kale chips are beautiful. The bread looks amazing too! I definitely need a dehydrator now!
Do you have any ideas for raw dips for veggies that don’t use a VitaMix? I have a mini food processor, and I tried to make raw hummus, but it turned out a lil’ too chunky for my tastes…
i really think that raw hummus is one of those things that isn’t worth it.. cooked is much healthier and tastier, in my opinion 🙂
try a raw sundried tomato spread: soaked sundried tomatoes, fresh basil, dried garlic and oregano, olive oil, sea salt and pepper
I LOVE kale chips. But I’ve never found a raw bread that I like. They’re all just…kind of yucky. The only cracker or bread-ish raw food that I like is corn chips. Honestly, it was the lack of an enjoyable savoury bread that kept me from staying raw when I was experimenting a few years back.
Hey Gina! I am all over that bread recipe! Also I have been looking for a cookie recipe that isn’t all nut based..like a chocolate chip cookie. Also A tortila chip recipe would be amazing:) Love the blog
s
I love cheesy Kale chips too! I make mine in the oven though as don’t have a dehydrator yet.
I have been following you on Open Sky for a while already, do I need to do anything else to be able to participate in the dehydrator giveaway? I am never sure if I need to enter my e-mail again as if I were subscribing or if just by being a follower I am eligible to participate.
What a nice raw bread recipe, totally cool! I would love to see the one with less onions too, please post! 🙂
Ama
nope that’s all you need to do! all followers will be included 🙂
That may be the greenest smoothie I have ever seen 😉 I included you in my “Blogs I Love” post this morning: http://bit.ly/feySIa – You truly are one of the best!
left a comment but wanted to say thanks again for the shout out 🙂
I LOVE my dehydrator. I’ve only had mine about a month but I think it’s already paid for itself! I love making kale chips (cheezy are the best), almond pulp crackers and dried fruits. Mmm 🙂
xo
LOVING the kale chip yummies!!!
Hope you and Pilot had a hot date night! I love date nights! Happy Weekend love! xoxo <3
happy weekend to you too, friend!
I love onions so that raw bread sounds perfect to me!
Hope you had a great date night! 🙂
i love onions too 🙂
Crackers. I would love a tried and true recipe for crackers. Thanks for sharing your bread and kale recipe.
oooh i have a good one! maybe i’ll post it next week 🙂
Get in my belly chessy kale chips. 🙂
Hope the date with the Pilot was HOTT!! wink, wink.
you have no idea 😉 hahah
next time i see you, i’ll bring some kale chips!
That would rock my kale loving socks off!
I got to get me one of those dehydrators! Or you could just pick me on Monday 😉
How do you make eggplant bacon!?
Wonderful timing! I just bought my first bunch of kale (a HUGE bunch for $3! baller!) at the Farmers Market today. I keep dreaming of kale chips but figured I would need to find a different use for my kale since I don’t have a dehydrator. I can’t wait to try them out in the oven. Thanks Gina!
What’s the name of the funky green drink (Ginger, garlic) that you got at Whole Foods? Thanks!
I’m allergic to cashews (I know, I know…it’s the only nut I can’t eat!). What nut would you recommend in place of them?
try soaked peanuts or raw coconut meat
ps i’m sorry you’re allergic! 🙁
Thanks! Me too, it leaves out a lot of Larabars. Boooooo!
thanks for the recipes gina! how long would you leave the onion bread in the oven if ur not using a dehydrator?
just make the bread when you’ll be home for a while- it should only take a few hours
Oh man, I need a dehydrator!
I’ve made kale chips but it cracks me up that for the calories in a cup or two of cashews, you could just eat a bag of potato chips, pretty much! I’m sure the kale ones have much better nutrition, though.
