A twist on the old standard

Hi 😀 Happy Monday to ya! Hope your morning is less groggy than mine- I slept horribly last night!

I had a giant bowl of buttery popcorn goodness before attempting to crash out last night:

popcorn

Just 1/4 cup organic popcorn kernels, popped in a paper bag in the microwave for 2 minutes, then topped with 1 T melted soy free Earth Balance, nutritional yeast, sea salt.. and foodgasms 😉 With a side of the new Keeping Up with the Kardashians episode, it was a bueno night.

This morning, I was very excited to try a twist on my usual raw oats.

I blended up soaked untoasted buckwheat groats with a banana, Stevia, vanilla and cinnamon:

oats

And also made a goji berry puree out of soaked goji berries and Stevia.

goji berry puree

I topped the raw oats with said puree, and a scoop of almond butter:

gojiaboats

(kind looks like an almond butter eye ball)

And enjoyed my bfast with a snowman full of green tea

tea

Not too shabby 😉

There’s a lot going on today in the casa de Gina, including:

-trip to Publizzle for ingredients

-raw dessert-making (pumpkin pie? also hoping to tweak my gingerbread recipe)

-Training appointment

-weights with Jeni

-making CD for Zumba (new dance tonight: “Bad Romance”. I’m stoked!)

-Pilates

-Zumba

-another training appointment

Whew! I’m off!

Have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to do:

  • Check out my Feet on the Street feature over at Andrea’s blog! A great little interview with my experience with raw foods, running story and workout gear 😀
  • I’ve received a ton of emails and comments from those of you who are curious about cleanses/detox plans, want to incorporate more raw foods and clean up your eats. To be honest, I can’t give advice about fasts/cleanses/detox plans because I’ve never tried one. With my activity level, it never seemed like a safe time for me to do one and wasn’t sure how to go about it. Well, I have great news! My friend Gena has teamed up with two other certified holistic health consultants to develop a 10-day group cleanse, which is divided into three different levels, depending on what your goals and current eating styles are like. They’re offering a special discount for early registration and bloggers and I’m really excited about it! Check out her blog later today for more info, if you’re interested 😀

It’s on my grocery list now… as is spirulina, although I don’t know where to find that. Maybe I can find a cute salesguy to help me locate it at Whole Foods 😉

Try as I might, I simply cannot integrate goji berries into my diet. I think they taste plain awful! I wish I like them 🙁

    Hey Gina!
Sounds like a fun day coming up for you! I wanted to ask you your advice about cardio. I am having some major difficulties getting started; it is both mental and physical, just to get going. I am in pretty “beginner” shape :)….I am really eating a clean-living, healthy lifestyle, doing some yoga, etc. I have some back issues (and am overweight too), and I have sacroiliac syndrome. I do some yoga and can’t do pilates b/c flat on the back causes fasciatis (no idea how to spell it, basically my hip? pyriformis (sp?) sort of shifts and I am in major pain). I just do have some pain when I exercise, my feel hurt from being overweight…Basically, I need to get started and I just don’t know where to take off. I also could do some swimming, but am also afraid of that. I can’t afford a gym membership, but my dad has a treadmill (nearby). Sooo, any ideas where to start off with cardio with my back, weight, and “emotional/mental” issues. You are always so positive and motivating; unfortunately, you can’t move to chicago to be my trainer (also, weather impacts us – Hello Snow!).

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Robin

hey gina had a question about exercise, and was wondering if you could help out. I read in a exercise blog online that you should limit cardio to no more than 3 to 6 hours a week. because if you over train, you’ll lose muscle and gain fat? is this true, I always thought cardio 3-5 times per week was okay!

  16. Marissa on December 14, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Nutritional yeast + popcorn were made for each other!

  17. Teresa on December 14, 2009 at 12:52 pm

I’m totally going to have to try that goji puree- you are genious! Just out of curiosity why do you use buckwheat groats and not oat groats for your raw oatmeal. I wasn’t sure if it was for taste? health? convenience? cost? ???? Thanks!

ps- your snowman love always makes me smile 🙂

  18. Mama Pea on December 14, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I have that cutie snowman mug! I’m going to use him through January, and I don’t care what the naysayers say (I guess it’s “nay”, right?). Happy Monday!!!

Hi- I have recently been trying to eat foods in their natural state. You have been such an inspiration and I just wanted to let you know that I tried the oatmeal cookie for breakfast recipe, I just made it and had a spoonful and it tasted just like a quaker chewy bar, just without all of the preservatives 🙂 I cant wait to eat it in the morning before my workout! Thanks

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:22 am

i’m so glad you liked it! 😀

  24. Lisa on December 14, 2009 at 6:22 pm

I still want the pilot’s jalapeno popcorn recipe; I hope you can duplicate it for us. I still have issues w/ Stevia; I don’t know why it tastes so bad to me. I guess I’ll have to stick w/ agave or honey, since splenda is chemicals. (Maybe it just tastes bad in my coffee.)Thanks for your onion crackers; they were superb w/ my veggie chilli!!

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:22 am

i’m glad you liked the flat breads! the stew was GLORIOUS 😀
i’ll be working on that hogcorn recipe 😀

  25. borntocare on December 14, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Great blog, Gina! I just found Fitnessista recently and I love coming here everyday to get inspired and to find new healthy living tips. Question: Could you tell us what it felt like when you first switched over to this style of eating? Did you feel sluggish at first as your body was making the transition? I’m definitely feeling that, and I’m wondering if it’s just a matter of getting used to eating whole, unprocessed food, etc. Thanks in advance!

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:21 am

yes, i felt a little sluggish, but honestly it wasn’t bad at all.
hang in there, and you’ll feel amazing in no time 😉

  27. Jordan @ Salt Sweat Sugar on December 14, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Where do you buy your plain kernels to pop in the brown bags?

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:20 am

i got them at whole foods and they usually have them in the bulk bins at most health stores (i know the j-ville wf’s has them) 😀

  28. Gena on December 14, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Thanks so much, Mama, for the shout! Hope I can help inspire people 🙂

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:19 am

      i’m sure you will 😀

  29. Chantal on December 14, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Gina, your answer #3 on your post on Andrea’s blog totally made my day… because I could SWEAR that I wrote that answer about myself at the Sport’s Authority about two weeks ago. I really wanted pink shoes to replace my old ones (also pink) and was sooo super disappointed that no good shoes came in that color and actually ended up going for the exact same pair as you (which I also swear by now… who you knew you could run with 0 pain???) hahaha…

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 9:17 am

that’s awesome! before i got fitted for my running shoes, i was trying to run in kid’s size pink nikes. ummm, major difference in the pain factor haha 😉

  30. Jackie on December 15, 2009 at 11:48 am

I really think you need to write a cookbook and publish it. Because honestly, all of your meals look fantastic. I know some are from other people’s books. But overrall, I am jealous of your ability to throw those meals together. Like the buckwheat groats with goji and almond butter look amazing.

    • Fitnessista on December 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm

      thanks jackie!
well, i’m workin’ on it.. i would love to have a book out there 😀

  31. Lauren (Biochemista) on December 15, 2009 at 2:56 pm

Great guest post, Gina! I’ve been sick lately so the running shoes have seen more of the closet than my feet, but I’m hoping to get my running mojo back soon!

  32. chrysta on December 15, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Oh yum! that popcorn sounds amazing! Cant wait for the hogcorn recipe too! =) Have a great day!
