I Bow Down
Heyyyyyy ๐ Happy Almost-Friday! This week has been weird because it was a shorter week. SO ready for the weekend ๐
A little while before dinner last night, I munched an apple with mesquite and cinnamon:
and when the pilot got home, we had wild caught mahi mahi (the fish so nice they named it twice), brown rice + wild rice, and steamed veggies.
I steamed the fish in our food steamer and the texture was LOVELY. Less mess and time-consuming than the usual pan-sear and bake.
Perfection ๐
We took the puppies for a long walk, talked about life โIโm trying to figure out if I should finish my MBA online– and then I went up to the yoga room for my first TurboFire workout.
Chalene Johnson, I bow down.

The first workout was AWESOME.
I did the Fire 30 Class and Stretch 10. Underneath the class title, you can click the words โNew to Classโ and she breaks down all of the moves youโll be doing. If you donโt click โNew to Classโ, sheโll just teach and use her cues, assuming that you already know the combos and proper form. Since Iโm a newbie, I did the โNew to Classโ and was SO glad I did– it was still fast and furious.
At first, I was a little worried because kickboxing is one thing Iโve never really gotten into. As yaโll know, I used to Tae Bo like it was nobodyโs biznazz back in, like 5th grade, but since then, kickboxing classes have not really been my thang.
This was totally, totally different than any kickboxing class Iโve taken.
We did 3 songs, building on different moves, adding to the choreography and they were fun, dance-y, and I got an awesome sweat in. In the workout, we did 3 โfire drillsโ which is where the HIIT comes in– 1 minute of balls to the wall insanity each time. After each drill, you get 1 minute to recover and then get back into the routine.
It wasnโt *quite* as intense as Insanity, but this was one of the easier routines (she starts the first week a little easier/slower and then the following weeks are more challenging because youโre more comfortable with form and style). At the end, I felt amazing, not totally fatigued or exhausted, just like a got in a great and fun workout. Bonus: I got to shake my booty a little ๐ The endorphins before bed were hilarious, too- I may or may not have been dancing around singing โPlay that Funky Musicโโฆ poor pilot, haha.
Lurve, lurve, lurve.
The pilot said heโll film me doing some of the moves tonight, so yaโll can see what the style and combos are like ๐
What are your requirements for an at-home workout DVD? Which styles do you love? A lot of yaโll have been asking why Iโve been working out at home lately and honestly, itโs nice to get away from *work* to do some of my workouts, since I work at two gyms. Iโll still do weights or hop on the elliptical or spin bike at work, but itโs nice to do something away from work too ๐

Upcoming: TurboFire video and FASHION FRIDAY tomorrow morning!
Your mention of “Mahi Mahi” reminded me of the film, “The House Bunny”. Have you ever seen it? The actress says, “Can i have the mahi mahi, but i’ll just have the one mahi as i’m not too hungry!” hahah cracks me up! xx
So glad you enjoyed TurboFire, it sounds amazing! I’m also a huge fan of workout dvds. Jari Love and Jillian Michaels are among my favorites lately. Pretty sure I’ll be ordering TurboFire in the very near future. I love Chalene’s energy and personality, that always makes doing videos easier. =D
YEAAAAHHH!!!! <3 <3 <3 That's why Chalene's the Queen. So glad you enjoyed your first workout. She so cray-cray!
I enjoy a variety of workout videos. I have Turbo Jam, Yoga Booty Ballet and recently I’ve been using Netflix to check out Self Workouts like Bikini Ready. I have a few random Crunch yoga/pilates videos too.
I have never been a kickboxing person. I signed up for an aerobic kickboxing class at my university, but switched to zumba after the first day. Boy, am I glad I did!
amazing review thank you gina! i emailed elizabeht and it turns out she lives right near me which is cool! I think i am DEF ordering it since I loved insanity so much I feel lost without a beach body dvd! haha (just kidding!) but I know Chalene ROCKS so thanks for the review!
Thanks for the TurboFire review, I can’t wait to hear more of what you think! Sounds like a great alternative to Insanity though!
You should go thru the turbo kick cert. It’s only a one day cert. I got mine but haven’t taught classes b/c I focus so much on Body Pump. Turbo Kick has a lot of options and moves to learn, but you’re limitless on routines! It’s fun!
Thanks for the review! I’m always intersted in trying new workouts…can’t wait to hear what you say about the other videos.
Looking forward to reading more about your experience with Turbo Fire. I’m a fan of Chalene, with Turbo Jam and Chalean Extreme…I’m not crazy about cardio though, but her music does make you wanna move, so I’m considering it.
There’s a website called videofitness.com. You might want to share your reviews on that. I always look at it before I buy any videos. Their reviews have been pretty accurate.
Hey, Gina! If you are interested in Hip Hop Hustle, check out the Fan Workouts on turbokick.com. Chalene releases some of her training videos for her instructors as home workout videos. Piyo is great, too.
Lol! I totally wanted to order this Turbo Fire!! It looks like so much fun!
You should become a beach body coach girl! You can make good coin on line ๐
xxoo
i know but decided against it because i don’t want bloggies to think i’m making money off of them ๐
I need to check out this new beach body workout! Curious though…are there any weight lifting dvds that you have tried from beachbody? I am finishing up a month of unlimited personal training which consisted of an hour of cardio/weight intervals every morning. It was great! I really like the muscle definition I have gotten from lifting, but know I will not get a good variety of exercises in if I do it on my own. I have “Insanity” and love it…will have to try turbokick next. But, does this company do any weights stuff? Or is there something else you recommend for at home training? Have done your workouts at the gym, but recently got a puppy. She is keeping me at home more often!
Also..where did you get your personal trainer certification? I would love to have that as a goal for myself but have no idea where to begin. Thanks Gina!

i haven’t tried any home weightlifting programs because i work out at the gym for free and don’t want to invest in home weights and equipment. i heard chalean extreme is good though…
my personal trainer cert is through afta (they have an online cert) but i’d check at the gyms you want to work to see which certs they accept

I’m a huge kickboxing fan and take the class every week. I was looking into getting that dvd but I want something really intense. The dvd set is 120.00 so I’m not sure if I want to make that commitment when I’m already taking the class. I love hearing your reviews of it to help me make my decision.
ack! i’m so glad to hear this review! ๐
My only requirements for workout DVD’s is that they kick my booty. I have several Jillian Michael’s DVDs and I like the 30 Day Shred b/c it’s only 20 minutes so I usually use it to supplement cardio. I have some of her longer DVDs too for days when I don’t feel like running or the elliptical. I totally understand why you would choose to workout at home. Even though I don’t work at a gym, sometimes you just need a change of scenery. It’s helpful to mix it up, not only with your workout, but also with your location…another way to not burn out on the same old thing.
