A needly nap

Hi friends 🙂

Wow.

Holy wow amazeballs.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for your incredible comments today. As expected, there were some that didn’t agree with my choice to eat poultry again (which is totally cool), but I appreciate all of your support to listen to my body and follow my heart.

Someone who is a HUGE supporter of my choice to eat chicken again:

bella

Bella will do anything for chicken.

Today has been bueno 🙂

I *tried* to take my favorite spin class, wearing my new Run: Dash Crops

 IMG00555-20110105-1055

Reflective ruffles?! Yes please 🙂

The gym started doing something where they’re supplying all of the music to the instructors. The instructors can’t use their own music! So after one song of lame-o techno and then “Hey There, Delilah”, I peaced out.

Some of today’s eats:

Brown rice cereal (lurve) with almond milk and blueberries

cereal

Salad beast with chickpeas, goat cheese, arugula, tomato, garlic gold, balsamic and basil

salad

Amazing 😀

I got my hair did and also went to my first acupuncture treatment

Yep, the biggest needle phobe in the world got acupuncture.

The verdict? I LOVED it. My homeopath said it was a good idea to add acupuncture into my routine (along with more massages.. tragedy haha), so I figured I’d give it a whirl.

I talked to the acupuncturist about my hormone imbalances and some pain that I’ve had in my back, and then was led to a room with recliners, dim lighting and meditation music playing. The place I went to practices acupuncture in a community environment, so you’re being treated at the same time as other people and can feed off of their peaceful energy.

I laid down in a recliner and he told me that the needles wouldn’t hurt, they may be warm, or have some tingling and generally wouldn’t feel anything. He was right for the most part- 99% of the needles didn’t hurt, but one made me see stars. The the pain quickly went away. (He said that the particular point was a very intense acupuncture spot but as long as it wasn’t still hurting, I was good) After placing the needles (I had about 3 on each arm, 2 or 3 on each leg, one in between my eyes and one on my head), he put a blanket over me and said to call the acupuncturists over if I needed anything, or if anything was hurting or bothering me, and to take about an hour. I took a peaceful needly nap 🙂

Have you tried acupuncture before? Did you enjoy it?

Well I’m off to dance, but I hope you’re all having a great night <3

See ya in the morning with this week’s WMOW!

xoxo

Gina

AHH needles! LOL…Thanks for you awesome blog!

  2. Kristy @ KristyRuns on January 5, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I’ve never tried it, but your experience really makes me want to try it now! I think it would just be creepy to look down and have needles poking into you…but if it’s relaxing and works… 🙂

  3. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on January 5, 2011 at 8:58 pm

I’ve never tried accupuncture, but always been curious…it’s been pricey everywhere I’ve seen, and I’d rather get a massage for that moolah 🙂 It does sound really cool though!

  4. Jackie @ Baking Charms on January 5, 2011 at 8:58 pm

I absolutely adore acupuncture… I worked for a Kinesiologist in while I was in high school and was able to get treatments 3x a week! It works wonders 🙂

So happy for you and your decision to eat chicken again; it’s great that you are doing what’s right for you, not what others think you should do. <3

  5. Ali @ Ali on the Run on January 5, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Wow, I’ve never heard of a gym controlling the music an instructor plays. That takes away all the fun! One of the biggest reasons I take class with certain teachers is based on the awesome music they play. Bummer, dude!

  6. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on January 5, 2011 at 9:02 pm

I’ve been dying to try acupuncture because I have very tense upper back and neck issues. I would love to do it.

  7. Jaime on January 5, 2011 at 9:04 pm

I know the benefits of acupuncture and have done it so many times, but it is REALLY painful for me. I don’t think that’s normal. It hurts when they put them in, and then if I move in the slightest bit when they are in, I feel shooting pain throughout my entire body. The only thing I like about it is when they take them out! haha….it has helped me with some issues before, but I don’t think the pain is worth it so I haven’t done it in a long time.

  8. Kat on January 5, 2011 at 9:12 pm

I go to acupuncture once a week and love it. Like you I hate needles with a passion but so far it’s been pretty nice and so relaxing. The only points that give me any problems are the ones in my hands above my ring/pinky fingers. Apparently they are very strong points for me but after a few seconds they settle down and I forget they are even there.

Bummer about the spin class 🙁

  9. Lili on January 5, 2011 at 9:15 pm

I went through the same thing, well not exactly, but Im an athlete, and though i loved the cruelty free aspect of veganism, i needed protein from fish and chicken. I just avoid red meat + only buy organic!

LOVE ACUPUNCTURE.. Seriously, i always fall asleep 🙂

  10. Brooke on January 5, 2011 at 9:18 pm

I haven’t done it personally, but I’ve heard wonderful things about it! I’m glad it worked good for you too, especially after the mishap with the spinning class!

  11. Sana on January 5, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I have no problem leaving group fitness classes when they are not my thing. Thanfully ppl don’t leave mine!

  12. Lindsay on January 5, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I’ve been going to acupuncture since July and I adore it 🙂 I have horrible migraines and it’s definitely helped me so much. I had one that made me see stars (and almost tears), I was so nervous on my following visit. Luckily, as time has gone on, I’ve gotten so used to it that when they do hurt, it barely bothers me. This year when I got my flu shot, it didn’t even hurt at all! I must be used to needles 🙂 My favorite thing is when I have moxa done. I’m not exactly sure how it works since I’m always laying face down, but they come in and heat some of the needles…amazing. You should ask about it!! The office I goes to does the community healing too 🙂 I love having a curtain instead of a door!

  13. Kristina @ spabettie on January 5, 2011 at 9:24 pm

yes, I have had AWESOME experience and results from acupuncture… I remember being nervous my first time (I used to dislike needles) but now I CAN’T WAIT! 😀

now I have Hey There Delilah in my head !! 😉

  14. Alyssa on January 5, 2011 at 9:28 pm

ahhhh! Major bravery girl. I get the shivers when I think about acupuncture even though I know it’s a great thing. hope it helps.

  15. Anna on January 5, 2011 at 9:30 pm

I have gone to an acupuncturist many times and have grown to love it. The first few times I wasn’t as relaxed but after going to another acupuncturist I found that their style made me relax better. My body tends to crash a few hours after treatments but then feels so much better.

  16. Kayla on January 5, 2011 at 9:38 pm

One between the eyes?!? Omg. This needle phobe is freaking just thinking about it! I’ve never had acupuncture – never had a massage either (sad, right?) – but I do think it is really interesting and something I would like to try.
Oh and I cannot imagine spinning to Hey There, Delilah – way too slow (and I hate that song anyway, lol).

  17. Suzi on January 5, 2011 at 9:39 pm

I’ve had it quite a few times. I’m lucky that my aunt is actually an acupuncturist and over the years I went to her clinic quite a few times for pain relief.

It think most everyone has one needle during an acupuncture session that is a bit….startling/painful/whatever. Honestly it’s amazing to me that they get so many stuck in you that you don’t even feel – how is that even possible?

When my Doctor gives me a shot (like th flu shot) ots of times I don’t even feel him touch my arm – no pinch no nothing. If it wasn’t for my arm aching afterwards I would swear he didn’t give it to me. I think he must use black magic 😉

  18. Maggs on January 5, 2011 at 9:39 pm

I love acupuncture. I know a lot of people who thinks it’s a sham, but it’s been around for a long time in eastern cultures and if it didn’t work I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have stood the test of time.

  19. Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat on January 5, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I’ve never tried acupuncture before, but I’ve always wanted to. How did you find your homeopath? I’ve always wanted to go to one!

    • Fitnessista on January 5, 2011 at 11:49 pm

i found my homeopath through a friend- he’s been amazing

  20. Megan (Braise The Roof) on January 5, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Wow, a whole hour to sit there and rest!? That’s amazing! I totally could have used that this afternoon. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 5, 2011 at 11:48 pm

it was surprising and very peaceful!

  21. Mo on January 5, 2011 at 9:54 pm

LOVE accupuncture. It took away my post car accident migraines.

Question about your dietary changes – do you still do the maca thang?

    • Fitnessista on January 5, 2011 at 11:48 pm

i haven’t lately- not because i don’t like it, but because i’ve forgotten about it!

  22. RunningOnCoffee on January 5, 2011 at 9:56 pm

I have the dash crops and love them!
Music really makes or breaks a spin class. For a while, my gym had changed instructors and the new instructor played primarily classic rock (which I like…but not for a high intensity workout). It didn’t work at all. And according to my HR monitor, I burned about 1/3 calories less with the classic rock class than the loud fast beat pop music.

  23. Kianni on January 5, 2011 at 10:00 pm

I most definitely have had acupuncture ^_^ I went to massage therapy class, and my teacher is an acupuncturist, so I got to practice on his patients if they wanted it, and got to learn all the meridians and points, as well as some Chinese, hehe… Dr. Bao >8D I let him try it on me, and used the TENS connected to the needles too, as he does with virtually everyone.

  24. Maryann on January 5, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Ive never tried acupuncture and dont know much about it…glad to hear you had a great experience though!

  25. Madeleine @ Stepping to the Bright Side on January 5, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Sounds like a great day! I’d love to try acupuncture myself sometime… I’ve only heard great things. I didn’t know an optional nap was involved though- even better 😉

  26. Heather (Heather's Dish) on January 5, 2011 at 10:05 pm

i would totally try acupuncture, but it still freaks me out…i have heard so many amazing things about it though 🙂

  27. Katy (The Singing Runner) on January 5, 2011 at 10:06 pm

I’ve never done acupuncture. It honestly scares me, but I’ve heard such great things about it!

  28. Jessica (FitandClean) on January 5, 2011 at 10:13 pm

I love how you’re so honest. Nutrition IS an individual road, everyone needs different things. (sorry catching up from the last posting 🙂 I’ve never had acupuncture, but my Dad did a looong time ago to help him quit smoking. And it worked! My take on things is if it helps you, then go with it. 🙂

  29. Kristin on January 5, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Wow! I teaching spinning and if they made me use the gym’s music I might have to quit. COming up with playlists is my favorite part and people love my music. I’m sure it has something to do with copyright laws.

    Acupuncture sounds very intersting!

  30. Chantal on January 5, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Ooo, I’m another huge needle-phobe (yes, I’m an adult that still needs someone to hold my hand when I go to the doctor), but I’ve always been so fascinated by acupuncture. I just can’t get myself to try it! Like most things, maybe you’ve inspired me to give it a shot too!!! I feel like I need it.

And I’m glad your back on the right track health-wise! I’ve always believed that being healthy IS the most important thing no matter what you have to do 🙂 You listened to yourself and that’s fantastic! Hope it works out!

  31. Christin@purplebirdblog on January 5, 2011 at 10:36 pm

I have always wanted to try acupuncture, even more now that we’ve learned a bit about acupressure in massage therapy school!

  32. Amanda (Eating Up) on January 5, 2011 at 10:41 pm

My best friend goes to acupuncture about twice a month and raves about the results. My dad is looking into it too to help his injured shoulder.

  33. Ashley on January 5, 2011 at 10:42 pm

    I don’t think I could ever do acupuncture. it=scary

  34. Natasha on January 5, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Acupuncture helped with my morning sickness during my 3rd pregnancy. Do whatever works!

  35. Carrie on January 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm

Who works out to “Hey there, Delilah??”

I’m not sure what I’d use acupuncture for, but I’m not opposed to it.

    • Fitnessista on January 5, 2011 at 11:46 pm

seriously! that song is definitely not spinning material

  36. Julie (Food & Other Things) on January 5, 2011 at 10:55 pm

I’ve never tried acupuncture, but I’ve always been curious about it. I love the reflective ruffles!

  37. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on January 5, 2011 at 11:10 pm

That’s really interesting. I’ve never tried it before but it’s definitely that’d be fun to look into.

  38. Mandy on January 5, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I would love to try acupuncture!
P.S. I LOVE those crops. I just got the same ones this past week. 🙂

  39. Aylin on January 5, 2011 at 11:12 pm

I loveeee acupuncture. One time, however, the needles left black and blue marks in the places where they were inserted. They didn’t leave for weeks–it made for a funny looking tummy and forehead (attractive much?).

    • Fitnessista on January 5, 2011 at 11:45 pm

      weird!

  40. Stefanie @thenewhealthy on January 5, 2011 at 11:15 pm

Oh boy, I don’t know if I could handle acupuncture! But I would be done for a nice massage!

  41. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on January 5, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I got it and while I don’t think it helped my problem, I didn’t mind it. Those needles are so hair-thin they don’t feel like anything. I’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s great, though.

  42. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on January 5, 2011 at 11:56 pm

My mom wants me to get acupuncture but I wimper at the sight of any needles. The flu shot brings tears to my eyes every year. I might have to suck it up and try it one day.

  43. Laura @ Backstage Pass on January 6, 2011 at 12:00 am

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve always wanted to try acupuncture.

And LOL – the spinning class music. The other week when you first took Body Pump and hated the music, I didn’t understand what you meant until YESTERDAY when my BP instructor played awful, awful music! Every single one of the tracks was like a cover version of the real deal. Even the Black Eyed Peas “I’ve Got a Feeling” had all of the different singing parts, but NOT the real people. It was horrid! Usually the songs are the ‘real’ versions or remixes.

  44. Josephine @ Creating a Positive Life on January 6, 2011 at 12:02 am

I haven’t tried acupuncture but I am excited to read about your journeys in it!

  45. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on January 6, 2011 at 12:04 am

I have always been very curious about acupuncture! I’ve never known anyone who has done it though. Thanks for the review.

  46. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 6, 2011 at 12:09 am

I am a huge acupuncture lover and believer. Long story short…I was having major issues in early pregnancy and attribute acupuncture for the reason I stayed pregnant and carried to term. It saved my life, and Skylar’s 🙂 And I have an almost 4 year old that I credit acupuncture with helping be here today! How’s that for a believer! 🙂

So glad you tried it and shared your story, Gina!!

  47. Krysta on January 6, 2011 at 12:11 am

I’m interested to know how to buy goat cheese… is there a certain milk fat % to look for or something? This is my second time buying it and it’s not the texture it is when I eat it at restaurants… Last time it was like feta cheese, and this time it’s so soft it’s like a liquid! hmmm

  48. Alycia [Fit n Fresh] on January 6, 2011 at 12:23 am

LOVE that quote! And I’ve never considered acupuncture, but I know that my Grandfather went to see an acupuncturist when he developed Bell’s Palsy and it completely cured him! Pretty sweet, huh?

    • Fitnessista on January 6, 2011 at 12:39 am

      thats amazing!

  49. Jess@atasteofconfidence on January 6, 2011 at 12:30 am

They should be able to use their own music- less fun!!

  50. Namaste Gurl on January 6, 2011 at 1:02 am

Other than my cousin’s poking around at me while in training to be acupuncturists, I’ve never tried acupuncture. I’m into chinese and homeopathic medicine, so hopefully in the future I will. I’m a needle baby, so good to know you enjoyed it as you are too 🙂
    Happy evening, Gina!
