And then it’s over

I did something yesterday that I’ve been freaked out about for quite a few months:

IMG 3498

(still obsessed with the sweet potato brownies)

went to the dentist.

In the world of medical professionals, dentists freak me out the most, especially after having a really bad experience (being stabbed with the novocaine shot 8 times !!!!! for one filling in college) and another that was a creepy sales guy. A electric toothbrush (which I actually love) and telling me that something was horribly wrong every time I went, which ended in lots of money paid out of pocket. I LOVED my dentist in Valdosta, and when we moved to Tucson I got my teeth cleaned once, got pregnant and no one would take a new pregnant client.

I used the excuse that Liv was a newborn and things were too crazy to book an appointment, but then finally accepted the fact that Liv is almost 6 months old and I can go to the freaking dentist already. Nana came over to stay with her, I went, and it was joyously uneventful. No cavities, no pain, no selling me things or telling me I was dying, just X-rays, cleaning, meet the dentist, referral for Invisalign and that’s it! Apparently my overbite needs some reining in, but I can deal with that.

Lesson of the story: often the anticipation of something is way worse than the event itself. Just get it over with and be happy it’s done! I often say this in my fitness classes, too, especially buff booty. It’s temporary- before you know it you’ll be eating lunch and thinking about how great you feel, or in the car driving home

Since it was dinnertime when I got home, I made some dinner for nana and myself:

IMG 3495

Goat cheese macaroni and cheese with roasted asparagus.

I put a plate in the microwave for the Pilot, who flew late again last night.

IMG 3496

(I’ll post the recipe when I tweak it a little, but it was pretty good)

This morning is a work day, but Zumba is somewhere in there 🙂

The Tabata Thursday video will be up tonight for all of my early morning workout birds! Congratulations to everyone who is rocking out the Summer Shape Up– keep up the amazing work! (And keep the pics coming- I absolutely love them)

Shout outs to the girls who have already done Workout 3

Caitlin, Beth, Eucalya, Alexandra, Rachel C, Madison, Angela, AJ, Mallory, and Athena, who has been using the workouts for her group fitness class! Great job, friends <3

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Oooh… I hate the dentist. I’ve had the same one since I was a kid, and he’s great, but the whole dentist experience makes me so uncomfortable! I’ve been avoiding the inevitable for a while. 🙂

And can’t wait for Tabata Thursday! I’ve really enjoyed the summer shape up. Thank you! I wish it was longer than four weeks!!

  2. Theresa on June 27, 2012 at 12:28 pm

I have to admit, I love going to the dentist. I just love the way my teeth feel after being cleaned and I especially love the “free” goody bag they give me–floss, toothbrush and toothpaste. But this time, I had to get x-rays to check if I had cavities in between my teeth. That kinda worried me because they told me that if I didn’t have cavities, they wouldn’t call me. I waited all day, staring at my cell phone and I didn’t get a phone call. I guess that means I’m cavity-free!

Bam, mac and cheese craving now! I have to say that all the pics in this post look rather yummy ;P

  4. Vidya on June 27, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Which reminds me I have to make a visit to the dentist too. I do hate the dentist, but you’re SOOO right, it’s the anticipation that is killer. BTW wonderful way to end this post 😉 (pic)

Oh baby, I’ll be SPRINTING to that finish line! 🙂

  6. Rhiannon on June 27, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Why hello there, Mr. Gosling. That pic = Turning Point of today!!

  7. Laura @ She Eats Well on June 27, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I have severe anxiety when it comes to the dentist…I have to get valiums for teeth cleanings. Bad teeth thanks to my genetics…oh well. It is really important to go and get checked up even though it’s daunting! Glad you bit the bullet and went – sounds like a very smooth visit!

  8. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on June 27, 2012 at 12:38 pm

I would finish ANY race if Ryan Gosling was at the finish line 😉

  9. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on June 27, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Goat cheese mac ‘n’ cheese sounds amazing! I also am not a huge fan of the dentist as I have ‘soft’ teeth which means I get cavities easily. But I’ve battled it by going MORE often than needed lol. Sounds crazy, but I have 4-5 month cleanings and my hygienist is really good and can usually spot a cavity really early on. So the last couple of times I’ve gone she’s seen it so early that I’ve just nipped next door to the dentist who has filled it on the spot without any need for needles as it was so shallow! It’s awesome and has made me committed to going really often so that they can find all of them that early. Also, try laser dentistry – fillings are done with a laser, so no drill and no injections needed!

  10. Bella on June 27, 2012 at 12:43 pm

How funny, I went to the dentist yesterday, too. I actually went back to the dentist I used to go to as a teen, which was like seeing an old relative. And she got me to commit to flossing – I’m so bad about that.

  11. Ginger on June 27, 2012 at 12:44 pm

that picture. omg. not appropriate feelings for work! ha ha ha!!

I agree with you that 99% of the time, things aren’t as bad as we expect! good to learn from history 🙂

  12. Annette @ FitnessPerks on June 27, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I need to hit up the dentist again soon….good reminder!!

That meal looks/sounds SO delicious! YUMM! Please post the recipe soon 🙂

    Hey Gina,
I really love your blog, the workouts are great and the recipes are to die for !
I do some pilates and try to eat very clean and healthy. The problem is that since the summer vacation had started i go out everyday and since i’m not home i also eat out a lot. When i come back home i’m really exhausted and i really don’t feel like working out… how can i stay healthy, workout and still go out and eat out?
    thanks,
    Mandy

that pic at the end of the post just made my day…he’s such a cutie!

  16. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on June 27, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I love that Ryan Gosling picture! Haha And I’m glad the dentist went well, I haven’t had any bad experiences with them but for me to get my teeth looking how I would like them to look would involve two horrible surgeries so I’m passing on that for now.

  17. Ang on June 27, 2012 at 12:58 pm

your mac and cheese looks absolutely amazing. i can’t wait for your recipe. I know what you mean about it being over and just dealing with it — i had 16 tubes of blood taken yesterday and i was DREADING it the days before. it was no big deal and i survived 🙂

  18. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on June 27, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Ugh I too hate the dentist! I’ve been trying to go for the past 6 months and I’ve had to cancel every appointment (for real reasons!) but I need to just make another one and deal with it! On happier notes, that mac and cheese looks DELICIOUS! I cannot wait for the recipe!

  19. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 27, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Haha I saw that Ryan photo on Pinterest 🙂 Funny story: A girl I met a couple of weeks ago was graduating from teacher’s college and Ryan’s mum was in her class. Not only that, but HE was at the grad with Eva. Crazy hey?! Wish I’d have been there! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 4:02 pm

      AMAZING

  20. Kelly on June 27, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Good job on going to the dentist! I was raised to go every 6 months and continued that into adulthood. I feel very grateful that I’ve never had any dental issues and credit it to going as recommended. I think it’s important that people go too because if you don’t take care of your teeth it can lead to so many other medical issues than just in your mouth! 🙂

I’m looking forward to your posting of the goat cheese macaroni and cheese recipe! Mac n’ cheese is my favorite but every since I stopped eating cow dairy I haven’t had it.

Even though I’m not doing the Summer Shape Up I may have to try out the Tabata Thursday workout after I saw your tweet! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 4:01 pm

let me know if you try it!
and i couldn’t agree more- it’s worth it to go every 6 months, even if you (and i mean “i” haha) hate it. when they told me it’s directly related to heart health, that was what convinced me back in the day

  21. Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy on June 27, 2012 at 1:11 pm

thank you for that photo at the end — 😀 and i definitely hate the dentist too!! eek!

  22. Marisol on June 27, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Oh you made me such a happy girl with that photo of Ryan G. 😀

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 4:02 pm

      you’re very welcome, haha

  23. Katie on June 27, 2012 at 1:20 pm

I have severe anxiety about the dentist as well. I completely understand the “avoiding” it part. If Ryan Gosling was at the finish line of a dentist appointment I think I wouldn’t avoid it anymore…haha. Great work outs by the way, I can’t wait to try workout 3!!

  24. Janiek @ A non-perfect girl on June 27, 2012 at 1:28 pm

  25. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 27, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Good for you for going! I actually love going to the dentist b/c I love the super clean feeling but I know I’m in the minority 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:58 pm

i LOVE the super clean feeling, but man do i hate sitting in that chair

  26. Natalie S on June 27, 2012 at 1:43 pm

That pic made my day haha! I have a short race (5k) Friday that I’ve been stressing because I haven’t done much running lately, but now I’m going to remember this picture when I’m trucking along 😉

  27. Sana on June 27, 2012 at 1:45 pm

My BFF is currently in school to BECOME a dentist. I don’t get her.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:58 pm

      i just don’t understand.

  28. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on June 27, 2012 at 1:46 pm

I hate the dentist too – honestly haven’t had a regular cleaning in years… eek!

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:58 pm

yikes!! i found that the longer i wait, the worse it is, so when i go every 6 months it’s worth it

  29. Sarah on June 27, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Oh dear. I’m afraid to tell you the last time I’ve been to the dentist. I absolutely hate it! I think it’s probably because when I was younger I had ALL but two baby teeth extracted, plus had braces. There just wasn’t any good times to be had. But I do need to go. You’re right.

Also… If that’s waiting for me at the finish line, I’m already lacing up my sneaks! 🙂

  30. Rebecca on June 27, 2012 at 1:54 pm

I hate the dentist, too….must be a sad profession with so many people who hate coming to see you!

Checking in for Summer Shape up! I did workout 3 yesterday + 15 min stead state cardio and today I walked 30 min on the treadmill — nice and easy but still burned some calories! Quick question — my back muscles are super sore today…. is that because of the dead lifts? Or am I doing the dead lifts wrong? Thanks for the workouts, they are awesome 🙂

  31. Catalina @ Cake with Love on June 27, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I saw that pic of Ryan G on Pinterest and I thought its glorious!! 🙂

Goat cheese macaroni sounds amazing, although I have to admit I’m drooling more over that picture of Ryan Gosling than anything else…

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:55 pm

      mmmm tasty…. 😉

  34. elle on June 27, 2012 at 2:36 pm

I’m assuming that’s brown rice pasta? How do you store it for leftovers (or for The Pilot for later)? I always find it develops a nasty hardish/chewy texture and sticks together like a MoFo if I don’t eat it right away.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:54 pm

yep it was brown rice. i just put it in the microwave with a damp paper towel on top. heating it that way keeps it from drying out

  35. Lisa on June 27, 2012 at 3:08 pm

I had goat cheese mac and cheese as well last night 🙂 It was so good! I actually love the dentist, I’m a weirdo. I actually wanted to go to school to become a dental hygienist, but soon realized my passion was not teeth. But, for the longest time that was my dream job!

  36. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on June 27, 2012 at 3:27 pm

I can sympathize! When I was in my first trimester, I needed to have two root canals. They wouldn’t use heavy pain killers on me though because of the pregnancy, and it was not fun! I am glad your torture is over. 🙂

  37. amanda on June 27, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Not a huge fan of the dentist, but I AM a huge fan of Monsieur Gosling! Hey Girl! haha..

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2012 at 3:53 pm

now if he were my dentist… things would be ok 😉

  38. Beks on June 27, 2012 at 4:00 pm

I always loved the dentist until this past winter when they told me I had about 8 cavities (after 26 years without a single one!) and now I’m about $600 poorer. I didn’t care for the dentist I went to this time. They were a chain and convenient, which is why I went. Not looking forward to my check up in August. 🙁

  39. melissa (fitnessnyc) on June 27, 2012 at 4:00 pm

The dentist freaks me out too! Love the pic of Ryan, although I’m more of a Chatum kind a girl. 😉

  40. Sam on June 27, 2012 at 4:02 pm

My poor boyfriend just had to get SEVEN cavities filled! He’s been in so much pain, it’s awful. I seem to be blessed with better teeth than he has.

  41. Eucalya on June 27, 2012 at 4:24 pm

Well i must admit i love going to the dentist! You feel so “clean” afterwards! Today was a rest day very needed by my body since it’s not used to doing so much sport 😉 and i just finished bedtime ab burner! Now sleep, only two exams left, passed my driving licence yesterday and then HOLIDAYS and bikini (i might be proud of my body for the very first time in my life, thanks Gina ;)) xxx Nadja

    Hey Gina:)
I’m local and need a dentist. Who did you go to?

      Dr badie! FANTASTIC

      • Melissa on June 27, 2012 at 11:09 pm

Thank you! I’ll check him out:)

  43. Laura @ LauraLikesDesign on June 27, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Ugh, I really dislike going to the dentist too–I have horribly sensitive teeth due to brushing my teeth too much and it’s painful to go!

  44. Jess on June 27, 2012 at 5:19 pm

I actually like going to the dentist, having clean teeth makes me feel great… Weirdo I know! 🙂

  45. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on June 27, 2012 at 5:21 pm

I would rather get a shot than go to the dentist…that scraping noise on my teeth makes me want to curl.
    Can’t wait for that recipe!!

  46. Cathy on June 27, 2012 at 5:55 pm

And I’ll see YOU at the finish line, Mr. Gosling! 😉 nice one!

I heard that Dentists have the #1 suicide rate of professionals because people dread going to them so much. (Sorry for the morbid fact) I have no idea if this is actually true or not!
And, um yes, please do post the goat cheese macaroni recipe, that seriously looks so good! I have been loving goat cheese lately!!

  49. Lindsey on June 27, 2012 at 6:31 pm

Perfect timing! I’m going to the dentist tomorrow and I, too, have been dreading it after having a bad experience with an evil dentist. I loved my pediatric dentist from years ago! She spoiled me on the dentistry profession. 🙁

The sweet potato brownies look amazing- I’ll make them as a post-dentist reward!

  50. Christina on June 27, 2012 at 6:42 pm

I share your dentist pain! If you get invisalign you will feel like you LIVE at the dentist! Im not sure about the US but in Australia it costs serious money 🙁 Ive had it now for about 2 months and it’s a total pain in the neck…I hate it. If your teeth aren’t bad (and you have a fabulous smile) I wouldnt bother all that much to tell you the truth… headaches/nausea everytime you have a new retainer, you have to take them out to eat/drink anything other than water and then floss and brush (ive gone from eating 5-6 meals a day to 3 because it’s too hard), constant dry mouth… ugh I could go on! I can’t wait until it’s over….oh and they have to stick little bits of cement on certain teeth as hooks for the retainers to work…and they are noticeable… I look like I have teeth growing out of teeth,…. Can you tell I hate them 😛

And sweet potato brownie? Im there!
