Buffalo hummus + touchdown eats

Word on the street is that there’s an important football game this weekend. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ve got the perfect healthy Super Bowl appetizer for you: buffalo hummus dip!

Buffalo hummus

Don’t ask me who’s playing, because I have no idea. (In my defense, I’m not a football fan at all but I could tell you the top 10 college basketball teams without hesitation.)

I do know that I’ll be enjoying a party and delicious savory food with friends and family, so that’s all that really matters. Oh, and the commercials. I live for Superbowl commercials.

Healthy Super Bowl Appetizer

Add some spice to your hummus and enjoy this healthy Super Bowl apepetizer during the big game! fitnessista.com | #superbowlrecipe #superbowlappetizer #healthysuperbowlappetizer #hummusrecipe

I was looking for a way to add some spice to our usual weekly hummus. Since Livi and I both enjoy spicy things – she asks for “spicy bite” which is sriracha on her eggs every morning – a spicy kick was the first idea to come to mind.

It’s kind of a pet peeve of mine to read “you have to make this! omg. right this very second!!” on my favorite blogs because usually I’m quickly skimming posts during naptime or before bed. But, I’m going to go ahead and say it. You have to make this.

lemon and chickpeas

Livi and I ate almost the entire batch as our afternoon snack. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

This sounds so up my alley. I going to try this on Friday!

On another note, I think I commented on this before but forgot what post, where did you get your bracelet that is next to your fitbit? I have been looking for one just like it!

This sounds so good! I love buffalo anything, but sadly, my husband does not. ๐Ÿ™ I won’t be making anything for Sunday’s game, though, because I’ll be at my last day of my Pilates cert classes–woohoo!

You know what is even weirder? I’m Australian, yet I could name most US states off the top of my head; many of the greatest NBA players of all time, including most NBA teams; and, most of the NHL teams too, yet neither of those sports are ever aired on Aussie TV, and the only time I saw an NHL game was when I was actually in the US. Funny how trivial information gets into our heads and stays there, taking up precious iCloudspace.

Oh my god, with every thing you tell us about Livi, I think she can’t get any cuter…until your next post. That’s pretty impressive that she likes spice. I love spicy hummus. The idea of BBQ sauce being an ingredient sounds even more awesome! Love this recipe.

The way I see it, if your lips aren’t burning after you eat, you’re not using enough hot sauce. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Can’t wait to try this with lots of sriracha or Frank’s!

  10. Megan on January 28, 2014 at 7:36 pm

Just wondering–do you not use Tahini in your hummus? I usually do when I make it, but recently the nuttiness of it has become overwhelming. Can’t wait to try this recipe! Thank you for sharing.

i had some jalapeno poppers last year that I’m still dreaming about to this day.

  12. Amie on January 28, 2014 at 8:20 pm

Did u use siracha? I used franks and I’m thinking it needs something more . . . .

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2014 at 8:26 pm

no i used the tj’s jalapeรฑo hot sauce. it was perfect!

  13. Amie on January 28, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Maybe I’ll add some siracha. I like things very spicy!!

  14. Livi on January 28, 2014 at 8:47 pm

Why have I never thought of this?! Can’t wait ’til Sunday:)

  18. Shannon on January 28, 2014 at 9:58 pm

Buffalo hummus sounds like and interesting spin on a classic but you forgot the oil! All the hummus I have ever made/eaten has olive oil or tahini!

    • J on January 28, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Agreed, this is not hummus, just purรฉed chickpeas with seasonings?

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2014 at 10:45 pm

it’s fun to switch things up every now and again. my usual hummus has tahini, but i wasn’t sure how the strong sesame flavor would taste with the bbq sauce

  19. Runner Girl Eats on January 29, 2014 at 6:48 am

Yum! Perfect for the superbowl! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Maria on January 29, 2014 at 8:13 am

  22. April on January 29, 2014 at 10:25 am

Ooooh, this IS a must make now recipe, but i have to wait until this weekend:)

I have been wanting to inquire – i notice Livi loves spicy (just like her mama) – do you think it is because you started giving her spicy foods (hot sauce) super early?

I love the spice as much as you – but my 2-year old hates anything that is spicy, it makes me so sad:( Although, i may have a breakthrough cuz last night i was eating the Red Hot tortilla chips and he actually tried one and ‘winced’, but then kept taking more bites and drinking water right after – so not sure what was going on there, ha ha!

    • Fitnessista on January 29, 2014 at 10:39 am

i think that could have something to do with it. she always wanted what i was eating, including salsa and indian food. it can’t be too spicy –she had some salsa at g grill that was too hot for her, and it was terrible- but she loves a little bit of kick

      • April on January 29, 2014 at 10:57 am

Ah, yeah we had the same experience at a restaurant, so i hear ya! Thanks, i am going to just keep eating spicy stuff in front of him:)

  23. Nicole on January 29, 2014 at 10:30 am

Yum! I will be adding this to my Super Bowl menu. I’m already planning on homemade spicy guacamole and Greek yogurt based spinach and artichoke dip!

    • Fitnessista on January 29, 2014 at 10:38 am

      yumm! hope you enjoy it!

  24. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on January 29, 2014 at 10:47 am

Yes! I need to make this asap! I actually don’t even know why I still buy hummus. Oh yeah because cleaning my food processor and putting it away is such a pain! Lol!

  26. Cassie Vaughn on January 29, 2014 at 12:47 pm

That sounds so yummy! I love hummus and the hubs loves hot sauce… I’ll have to give it a try!

  27. Andrea on January 29, 2014 at 2:34 pm

I adore hummus but have never made it, so this was my first attempt. I love this recipe! Made it with my beloved Frank’s Hot Sauce (3 tbsp) and an unknown amount (3 tsp?) of Cholula. It’s delicious and def on the menu for Sunday with celery and carrot sticks. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on January 29, 2014 at 6:43 pm

awesome! so happy you liked it ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Maureen on January 29, 2014 at 4:41 pm

I’ve made buffalo cauliflower – which was an absolute hit. I just got a recipe for a whole roasted cauliflower – you don’t break it up – and it involves roasting it with a coating of yogurt/cumin and a few other things. And this year, our snacks will have to be put high up – we just got a 2 month old pup that can’t be trusted:). Take care and love your snack suggestions.

  29. Megan @ The Skinny-Life on January 29, 2014 at 5:47 pm

I just realized I have never made my own hummus & I have no idea why??? It’s so easy to make. Why would I buy it? Your post just inspired me!

    • Fitnessista on January 29, 2014 at 6:40 pm

it’s super easy to make! fun to play with flavor variations, too ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Elyse @ Lizzie Fit on January 29, 2014 at 9:02 pm

Oh my gawwwd that buffalo hummus sounds amaze…. we are currently obsessed with buffalo sauce in my house. Gotta do it!

  31. Jenni @ Fitzala on January 29, 2014 at 9:58 pm

I’m definitely going to try this! I love spicy and it’ll be nice to have a healthier option at our table for everyone. Most of the men that’ll be at our party are anti-healthy and I love bringing good stuff that proves them wrong ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Leanne on January 30, 2014 at 11:30 am

Adding this to my list of things to make for Sunday! I have to make most of the snacks on Saturday, but hopefully it will allow the flavours to “develop” more!!

    • Fitnessista on January 30, 2014 at 4:22 pm

awesome! hope you like it ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. Bethany on March 15, 2014 at 8:44 pm

    This is delicious!
Although I used only 1 tablespoon of hottttt BBQ sauce instead.. no extra hot sauce required for me!

  36. Kim on January 31, 2015 at 7:08 pm

cannot wait to try this! You should write a book or something

  37. Carrie on February 1, 2015 at 3:18 am

This looks so good! I live in Buffalo, so I’ve seen “(Buffalo) wing sauce” on eveything…but never in hummus. Can’t wait to try it…and thanks for the “Buffalove!!”
