Chips and Cookies

Hey! Happy INDIAN FOOD WEDNESDAY 😀 Hope your morning is going well!

Last night, I cozied up on the couch with the rest of the kale chips:

 chips

the puppers,

dogs

(Viesa looks so sneaky!)

and a documentary (The Business of Being Born—pretty fascinating stuff).

We crashed out and were awoken by the Pilot, who flew late last night and got home at 4:30am. Crazy! He’s catching up on zzzzz’s and I’m so glad he doesn’t have to fly late again tonight.

Bfast was the classic:

cookie

A breakfast cookie!

This beauty had:

oats,

almond butter + almond milk,

Sun Warrior protein,

goji berries and cacao nibs.

When I know a bfast cookie is waiting for me, I don’t press “Snooze” as many times 😉

Plan for the day:

Workout thang

-Tons of training appointments

Making coleslaw for the squadron BBQ tonight –I’ve never made coleslaw before so we’ll see how this goes…

-Late Indian food lunch with the pilot in between appts

Have a great day and I’ll see ya later this afternoon! <3

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: If you could meet any celebrity chef or fitness guru, who would you want to meet? I’ve been thinking about this one because my friend Beth chatted it up with Tyler Florence yesterday. Cheffer-wise, I would LOVE to meet B-flizzle (aka Bobby Flay) or Paula Deen (she seems like so much fun), and fitness guru-wise, I would definitely want to meet Shaun T. 🙂

LOVE the idea for the upcoming Reader’s Request. I’m so clueless when I roll into an Indian restaurant – that will be a great reference for future visits.

Like the rest of the world, I would love JUST ONE WORKOUT with Bob Harper and/or Jillian Michaels. Just one hour of training and I feel like I would learn SO much. That’s the one thing about TBS: I wish they showed more of the workouts themselves.

  2. Jessica @ How Sweet on July 21, 2010 at 9:42 am

Ina Garten! She is just so classy, I would love to learn from her.

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 9:46 am

you’re totally right- i love her, too.

  3. Mimi on July 21, 2010 at 9:45 am

I’m just about on par with you in my passion for Indian food (If you ever come to Lincoln, NE, I definitely know the place to suggest!) But, sometimes it’s tricky to know what to order. I’m excited to read your suggestions!

As for celeb chef dream lists, I want to live in Ina Garten’s house and eat her food every day, so I’d say it would be less awkward if I actually knew the woman…

  4. Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers on July 21, 2010 at 9:47 am

    definitely paula deen or giada!

  5. jenna on July 21, 2010 at 9:48 am

Giada! She’s so gorgeous! And I love her food.

can you send me a lifetime supply of your kale chips?? pretty please? hee hee they looks amazingly delish! 🙂

    Have a great indian wednesday.

  6. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on July 21, 2010 at 9:48 am

Paula Deen seems like the sweetest lady! I loved seeing her on Top Chef the other week!

I’d probably want to meet Jillian Michaels– even if she did scream at me during a workout! Ha ha. I LOVE her workout dvd’s, and I think like she seems really nice, too!

  7. Alyssa @ bride to be fit on July 21, 2010 at 9:49 am

Agree with the previous comment… Ina garten!!! Love her, want to be her 🙂
those cheesy kale chips look amazing, I finally made the regular kale chips and they were deeelicious!!

  8. Marilou @ Mostly Healthy on July 21, 2010 at 9:50 am

The girl from Bitchin’ Kitchen .. (oops I don’t remember her name) … She cracks me up everytime!!!!

  9. Lauren on July 21, 2010 at 9:54 am

I would die to meet Nigella Lawson. She just radiates love for life and food so much I feel like her mere PRESENCE would hugely enhance any experience!

    • Lauren on July 21, 2010 at 9:55 am

Additionally, I know she would bring a delectable dessert 🙂

  10. Heather on July 21, 2010 at 10:00 am

He’s not technically a chef anymore, but I’d LOVE to hang with Anthony Bourdain.
    🙂

  11. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com on July 21, 2010 at 10:05 am

I would love to meet Paula Deen — what a fun lady!

I’d also like to meet Chalene Johnson (I am a Turbo Firer as well!), Jillian Michaels, Bethenny Frankel and Tom Colicchio from Top Chef.

I googled that documentary you watched and I will def check it out. Is it basically about how home births are better (for many reasons) than going to a hospital? Or is it more than that?

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:11 am

      turbo fiyahhhhhh! 🙂
it’s about how the current way of treating and handling labor has made women afraid of birth and electing to have c-sections. it breaks down a lot of myths surrounding birth and encourages women to take back the birth experience. i really enjoyed watching it– it’s not so much about how home births are better, but more about what the US is doing wrong and how to become empowered again. kind of like food inc, but for births haha 🙂

      • Holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com on July 21, 2010 at 11:51 am

Ooh I will have to check it out! I’ll have to watch it when my husband isn’t home or he’ll think I’ve caught the baby fever! 🙂

To be honest I cannot wait to have babies. I think giving birth will be such an amazing experience.

  12. Kalli@fitandfortysomething on July 21, 2010 at 10:06 am

    Giada for sure!

  13. andrea on July 21, 2010 at 10:11 am

The woman doing the home births in the vid had a child death recently….so sad

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:11 am

are you serious?? that is so sad 🙁

  14. yolie on July 21, 2010 at 10:18 am

Oh my gosh, that’s an awesome question! 🙂 I would LOVE to meet BaronBaptiste, Seane Corn and Bryan Kest…their yoga classes rock my world! 😀 Oh and I know he’s not a chef or fitness guru, but dude, it would be my dream come true to meet Jason Mraz, he and his songs are soooo uplifting and inspiring and refreshing! *Keeps dreaming hopefully, lol!* 🙂 xyx

  15. Ilana on July 21, 2010 at 10:28 am

I would kill to get drunk with Paula Deen. And OMG Jamie Oliver, I’ve had a crush on him since I was 11 (12 years!!!). But I love them all, all, all. I think I would be more starstruck meeting one of my fave celebrity chefs than meeting one of my favorite movie stars, honestly!

btw, for a readers request, I don’t know if you’ve ever written about why you became a personal trainer but I would be really interested to read about that journey!!

  16. Sarra H on July 21, 2010 at 10:29 am

I would love to meet jillian michaels, she’s so bad ass. I am obsessed with her hahaha, I have pretty much all of her DVDs. Even though I hate how she came out with all these diet pills and what not, which kind of discredits her a little, i still love her

  17. Deborah Bartlett on July 21, 2010 at 10:29 am

Hi Gina , I love your blog and read it every day! 🙂
I had a question for you and wanted to send you an email rather then post it here, do you mind posting it ?
    Have a fantastic day!

    Thanks!

  19. Tina on July 21, 2010 at 10:37 am

I think I would love to meet Giada. She just seems so cute and bubbly. I’ve met Paula Dean before bec she is friends with my aunt. She is a hoot and just as “Hey, y’all” in person as on tv.

Fitness guru? Probably Chalene Johnson or Cathe Friedrich bec I have been doing their stuff forever.

PS – Love your version of cookies + chips.

  20. BethT on July 21, 2010 at 10:38 am

I’m pretty sure Tyler is going to call me later today.

  21. Shanna on July 21, 2010 at 10:39 am

I have a crush on Curtis Stone, so I’d like to meet him..and have him cook in muh kitchen..wink wink

  22. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on July 21, 2010 at 10:40 am

Ooh, I would LOVE to meet Giada! As for fitness…I think it would be funny to meet Richard Simmons, lol. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:45 am

      ahah that would be AWESOME

  23. Sarah R on July 21, 2010 at 10:41 am

Ooohh! Good reader’s request! I’m making your eggplant curry in the slow cooker for dinner tonight. I’ve already got the whole wheat Naan ready!!

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:45 am

whoo hoo! i hope you love it 🙂

  24. Pam on July 21, 2010 at 10:42 am

Shaun T for sure, baby…he he! For the chefy..I really like Ina..she is so calm, but for fun and crazy times….Guy Fieri…ha ha!

    Enjoy!

  25. Jill@MySoCalledHealthLife on July 21, 2010 at 10:44 am

I need some Bobby Flay in my life!!! I would probably embarrass myself though and make a lot of lame jokes about ‘throw downs’ and randomly yell ‘grill it’ or something equally lame. Such is life 😉

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:45 am

hahah you and me both, girl 🙂

  26. Hotchick on July 21, 2010 at 10:46 am

Hi there, I’m excited to read your Readers Request about Indian food!! Here’s an idea for a R.R.: What kind if magazines (we know you like Self) do you read & why do you like them? Do you read tabloids too? I think that’ll be a really fun post:)

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 10:48 am

hahah YES i read tabloids 🙂
great idea- maybe i’ll do that for next week’s reader’s request

  27. gigi on July 21, 2010 at 10:55 am

Chef: Paula Dean because I want her to be my grandma, I love her!
Fitness Guru: Lyle Mccdonald, he has so much knowledge on every aspect of the subject
I leave a breakfast cookie in my fridge for after my run, I think it makes me run faster 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 11:12 am

hahah that’s awesome running motivation! 🙂

  28. Kate on July 21, 2010 at 10:55 am

I would love to meet Padma Lakshmi and Giada, they’re both such gorgeous women and kind of my idols 🙂
Fitness-wise I’m not sure, but I can tell you it wouldn’t be Jillian Michaels because she kind of scares me…

  29. Jessye Grebe on July 21, 2010 at 11:03 am

I would absolutely love to meet Tosca Reno and Jillian Michaels! Both of them have such amazing stories and so much positive energy!

A note on the whole birthing thing… I had my first (and only so far) child three years ago NATURALLY! I knew from the very moment I found out I was pregnant that I did not want to miss what a natural childbirth was like! I chose to have no drugs and my mid-wife was 100% percent on board and supportive! So many women choose drugs because they are offered and spoken about so commonly. I am so glad I chose to go natural and will do it the same way the next time for sure!

Love the blog Gina! Where in NC were ya’ll stationed previously?

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 11:12 am

      that is AWESOME
we were stationed at pope afb in fayetteville, nc 🙂 i loved it there

      • Jessye Grebe on July 21, 2010 at 11:31 am

We actually live in Sanford, NC. We were stationed at Fort Bragg when my husband was Active Duty. Love it here as well! 🙂

      • rori on July 21, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Yay! I was an army brat and was born on the base in Fayetteville, NC!

  30. Sejal M on July 21, 2010 at 11:03 am

    Hey there!
Well, if you’re ever in Ottawa , Canada (dont know why you would be) but my hubby owns the best Indian restaurant in town. We could celebrate Indian Food Wednesday Ottawa Styles.
I had a baby 9 months ago and was determiined to have a natural birth…well…he was breech and there was nothing we could do. I had to have a c section, although they are again starting to do vaginal births for breech babies again. So I learned that like everything in life, being open minded and flexible about your birth plan is super important. You dont want to go your whole life deisappointed. I wish I had a natural birth but as long as we are both healthy, that’s all that matters.

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 11:11 am

      amen- that’s all that matters

  31. Heather (Heather's Dish) on July 21, 2010 at 11:10 am

i would LOVE to hang out with Ina Garten or Giada…they’re so cute and fuN!

  32. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on July 21, 2010 at 11:10 am

I’d pick Ina Garten or Giada. As for fitness, anyone but Jillian. I think she’d make me cry.

  33. Run Sarah on July 21, 2010 at 11:12 am

Forgot about Indian Wednesday – I may have to celebrate! I’d love to meet Jillian Michaels.

  34. Super G on July 21, 2010 at 11:13 am

I would love to meet Giada and cook with her. She looks so awesome and fun. I would love to meet Shaun T and “dig deep” but that’s if I don’t embarass myself…hihi

  35. Jes on July 21, 2010 at 11:14 am

I would love for Curtis Stone to hijack me in a grocery store! HAHA =)

  36. Michelle on July 21, 2010 at 11:29 am

zomg. I was about 3 feet away from Bobby Flay after he finished filming the Throwdown episode in Boston. The guy from the coffee shop kept being like “Go talk to him. He’s SO nice. He’s been chatting with everybody. I’m not giving you your cookie and coffee till you talk to him.” And I totally chickened out! 🙁

  37. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on July 21, 2010 at 11:36 am

Can’t wait for the reader’s request! I love indian food but would like to keep it on the healthy side. 😉

I also made a bfast cookie for the FIRST time a couple of days ago! It was pretty great! 🙂 I think adding 1/2 banana made it extra mushy though. I know it should be eaten with a spoon but the inside felt kinda like overnight oats-ish to me? I’ll try to keep mushy things and liquids to a minimum next time.

  38. Susan on July 21, 2010 at 11:39 am

I think I’d like to meet Giada, love her recipes. I met Nigella Lawson in London and it was the biggest disappointment ever, she told she couldn’t cook and then she attempted to make a simple dessert and she wasn’t able to make it, she couldn’t even turn on the food processor.

  39. Lauren @NoFauxFood on July 21, 2010 at 11:41 am

I always order saag punjabi 🙂 it’s just spinach, peppers and onions with seasonings, no cream, butter or cheese, and it’s GLORIOUS 🙂 that and aloo gobi masala, which is white potatoes 🙁 but SO good.

  40. Jenn on July 21, 2010 at 11:42 am

I stumbled upon your blog last week and have been following ever since! Instead of being a creeper, I thought I’d leave a message! I would lovvvve to meet and cook with Ina Garten and Mario Batali. I heart Ina Garten’s take on simple, gourmet food. Mario Batali’s philosophy that fresh, simple ingredients can make the best food inspires me to use fresher ingredients while cooking (I secretly want them to adopt me). In terms of celebrity trainers..Shaun T is up there on my list too! Also, Jackie Warner. I wouldn’t mind having a hardcore training session with both trainers.

  41. Paige (Running Around Normal) on July 21, 2010 at 11:57 am

Alton Brown for surrre. He’s just so full of knowledge and wit – I absolutely adore him 🙂
Keep sane today during your busy day!

  42. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on July 21, 2010 at 11:57 am

SO EXCITED for the Indian post, it’s my favorite type of cuisine!! I’d love to meet Sarma from Pure Food and Wine, or Martha Stewart, because I’ve gotten her magazine since I was in elementary school 🙂

  43. Sarah Anne on July 21, 2010 at 12:01 pm

I would Luuuurrve to meet Giada DeLaurentis. I just think she looks like such a sweet, fun, GENUINE person! The other person would be Alton Brown. My boyfriend is completely obsessed with him. It’s pretty cute to catch him watching Alton on YouTube!

Fitness Guru…hrm. I’m not sure! I love my P90x but I find the BeachBody ‘peeps’ to be a bit TOO hard core. I’d like to meet TOny Horton just to see 😛 Every coach I’ve had is like..off the charts so I now tend to stay away from them and just do my own thang with the vids. Not a big Jillian fan either, the whole diet pill thing kinda turned me off of her. That and I think she’s kind of nasty to clients when yes, some need tough love, there are others that need more support. I am a Bob fan 😀

And I *HATE* when the bf works nights! He’s about to set off on a couple night shifts (7pm-7am) and it just kills me. I don’t sleep well, I don’t go to bed at a reasonable hour. It’s just not the same! I love cooking dinner for us both, having him around to chat with and it sucks. I can only imagine what deployment is like. I’d keep myself so busy when he came home, I’d probably end up sleeping for a week to make up for it! What do you do to keep yourself busy when he’s working late or what not? I find myself more often than not in the kitchen, or OUT. Staying at home just doesn’t do the trick for me. <3 to you!

    • Sarah Anne on July 21, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Oooh – and Business of Being Born is wonderful. I LOVED it, but my boyfriend won’t watch it with me because I get too riled up. 😛 In many provinces in Canada, Midwives are also covered by healthcare. That’s a good step!

I would also love to meet Rick Moonen- he cooks lovely fish and is firey! I love him.

  44. Maura on July 21, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I’d love to meet Paula or Rachel Ray. I think they are both such fun women. As for a fitness guru, I’d LOVE to meet Jillian. She’s badass and would totally kick my bootayy.

  45. LisaG on July 21, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I would love to meet Thomas Keller, (French Laundry,Ad Hoc, & Per se), his food is so amazing.
I did get to meet Tyler Florence and the Deen Brothers. They were all very “down to earth” and personable like they would seem.

  46. Laura (B Foxy Fitness) on July 21, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Hands down, I would want to meet that fitness goddess that is Chalene Johnson! Paula Deen is good one too though! I ate at her restaurant in Savannah once, but she didn’t “drop by” the restaurant that day 🙁 That documentary sounds fascinating!

    • Fitnessista on July 21, 2010 at 12:56 pm

i ate at her restaurant once too… uhhhh freaking mazing

  47. Alicia on July 21, 2010 at 12:13 pm

I would love to meet Giada, Bobby Flay and Pound of Butter Ina! As for fitness, I do love Jillian…

I watched the documentary The Business of Being Born and I loved it. I have a phobia of anything going into my spine and don’t want drugs when I give birth. My mom had me 100% au natural and I want to too, plus she is a doula. When I do get pregnant I compromised with my husband on the location, I wanted home and he wanted hospital…as long as my Doctor is willing to do it my way that’s all I care about. I don’t even know what my way will be till I get there, but that is what is important to me!

  48. Hilary@coffeeismycarrot on July 21, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I would love to meet Paula Dean because I feel like a hug from her would make everything better and when being indulgent, nothing beats her sweet treats. I also love Curtis Stone.

  49. RhodeyGirl on July 21, 2010 at 12:32 pm

That breakfast cookie looks insane. I really need to make one for myself one of these days!!!!

I would love to meet Jennifer Lopez. I am including her because she is an AMAZING dancer, and her story is fascinating. Crazy that teenagers today probably don’t even know she was such an awesome dancer.

  50. Lindsay on July 21, 2010 at 12:37 pm

I used to skip class to watch Curtis Stone with my roomie. Oh what I would give for him and his accent to hijack me! I’m also convinced that Anthony Bourdain is the coolest man on the planet.

As for fitness.. definitely Jillian and Bob. She’s SUCH a badass and I have Bob’s infamous quote written on my bathroom mirror. “Stand up and finish what you started!” Love it.

RR – I work in an office 8-5 and then deliver pizzas at night. It’s hard enough trying to come up with office meals, but I’m completely stumped on good things to eat while driving. Smoothies and wraps are all I can think of and I’m not really a wrap kinda girl. Any help would be appreciated! 🙂
