Creepy Crawlies

Shall I post the picture of the creepy crawly before or after the breakfast pic? Let’s do after… I don’t want you to lose your appetite 😉

Hi! Happy Friday! Hope your morning is going well <3

I woke up bright and early to bust out a TurboFire workout before starting the day’s to-dos.

turbo

[No TV in the bedroom, so I use the laptop for DVD workouts]

I’m itching for a weights sesh, but this way if the day gets away from me, I have my cardio done 🙂 [I like to split up cardio and weights]

For bfast, I combined 1/3 C oats, 2 T Chia Goodness, 1/2 a scoop Sun Warrior and cinnamon in a glass

cup

then added coconut milk, half a banana, some blueberries and an almond butter drizzle.

chia

Breakfast perfection.

chia (2)

Ok, so now that I showed ya that, I can tell you about the creepy crawly that was in our garage last night.

scorpion

A SCORPION!!!!!!
*shrieks*

The Pilot found that thing while he was getting paint out of the garage and trapped him in a basket. And then he killed him :/

I usually hate killing creepy crawlies, but scorpions are no joke. Good thing little Bell wasn’t the one to find him.

Time to seize the day over here 😉

See ya this afternoon! <3

xoxo

Gina

Thinking about my friends on the East coast- stay safe this weekend!

Today’s workout jam: “Shake Senora” Pitbull ft T Pain (using this for Zumba warm-up tomorrow- LOVE it. But I love anything Pitbull)

EEKK! I’m glad we don’t have scorpions around here! I don’t even want to think of the sound it made when he killed it…..shudder.

I’m really hoping Irene is out of steam when she reaches Nova Scotia, I’m not in the mood for a big storm :\

  2. AJ on August 26, 2011 at 11:45 am

ahhh! That is the ONE thing that makes me happy I live in a climate with frigid winters.. no big creepy crawlies can survive here!

  3. Michelle C on August 26, 2011 at 11:46 am

Love Pitbull! I told my roommate last night that I wanted to meet him and thank him for getting me through marathon training! 🙂

  4. Allison @ Food For Healing on August 26, 2011 at 11:46 am

  5. Cate on August 26, 2011 at 11:47 am

Aaaahhh! We found 2 scorpions in a bungalow we were staying in in Thailand and they scared the crap out of me! That one looks bigger and scarier though. YIKES

  6. Alex on August 26, 2011 at 11:48 am

is that thing as big as it looks? creepy for sure..

  7. Danielle (Shrinking and Studying) on August 26, 2011 at 11:51 am

Mmmm… can you come to Alberta and make be breakfast?

Scorpions are seriously scary little bug things! I found a beetle the size of a mouse in our second floor apartment last night and freaked out! I’m not sure what I’d do if I found a scorpion.

Can’t wait to hear about your dinner party this weekend! <3

  8. Kathryn @ Flopoodle on August 26, 2011 at 11:52 am

That breakfast is so pretty! Looks like a nice day out there, too 🙂

  9. Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission on August 26, 2011 at 11:52 am

EEEEK! And I thought centipedes were nasty …. :/
Thank goodness the Pilot was there to take care of it!

  10. Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life on August 26, 2011 at 11:53 am

Yikes! I have never seen a real live scorpion before! I probably would have peed myself!!!! Luckily the pups didn’t get a hold of it!

  11. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on August 26, 2011 at 11:53 am

Ahhh! I would think you’d see those guys pretty often in your part of the country, no?

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2011 at 11:54 am

yes, but it’s been a while!

  12. Diana on August 26, 2011 at 11:57 am

AHHHH! That is terrifying! Now I feel like a super-wimp: I found a cockroach in my apartment (we live in NYC, we’re not dirty I swear) and tried to crush it with my trash can but it SURVIVED. Now it is living under my trashcan. We asked our doorman to help us kill it but he shot us down brutally and said something along the lines of “you’re big girls, you can take care of it.” UM I BEG TO DIFFER! I think we need to hire your husband to come exterminate!

  13. Kristen @ Chocolate Covered Kristen on August 26, 2011 at 11:58 am

Yuck! That scorpion looks meeeeaan. I’m curious, how has teaching super high energy classes like Zumba changed with the growing belly? And have you ever done the Dailey Method? There is a studio one town over and I’m considering giving it a try, but sometimes I get a little intimidated trying new classes.

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2011 at 12:00 pm

it’s been fine, so far (knock on wood). zumba is actually one of the things that makes me feel fantastic, but i may have to invest in a belly support soon because it’s growing so quickly!
i haven’t heard of it! will have to research

  14. Sonia (the Mexigarian) on August 26, 2011 at 11:58 am

JEEPERS! Scorpions freak me the heck out. I watched an episode of some horror monster show on animal planet with a house that was infested with those things somewhere in the southwest. Ugh, I shudder. Thankfully your man was the one to find and handle it. I can’t stand (ie terrified of) wasps/hornets/hugeash bees but Hubby is allergic to them so I have to deal with them. He gets all the other creepy crawlies tho. 😉

And that Pitbull remake of Shake Senora-LOVE IT! I practically dance straight up in my car when I hear it on the radio 😀 I love the original too. Lol. Makes me think of Beetlejuice.

  15. Dynamics on August 26, 2011 at 11:59 am

Those are worse than cockroaches. Yikes. Make sure you buy yourself a blacklight. They glow under it.

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2011 at 12:00 pm

      ooh good to know!

      • mary on August 26, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Also, if you find any in the house… I know people who put their crib legs in mason jars. They could still drop in from the ceiling or wall but it’s not likely.

We have tons but that one looks ginormous! The little ones don’t phase me much anymore. I’m pretty sure our ferret has gotten stung a couple times and been ok so Bella probably would be fine.

They should sell flashlight-style blacklights out there. Not cheap but nice for checking.

  16. Cait @ Cait hates Cake on August 26, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Oh my gosh, I would’ve FREAKED! Thank goodness we hardly ever get any bugs in our place (we are on the third floor). When we are on vacation in Costa Rica, we got nightly cockroaches in our condo. Sick.

  17. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on August 26, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I would have lost my cool and hid under the covers in my bed for days if I saw a scorpion… omg… sick.

I have a big big BIG reader’s request for you —- could you do a video of basic zumba moves? I have the zumba dvd’s but I find the instructors go through the moves once slowly, and then they say “you got it? okay full speed” and I’m left looking at the tv screen saying “…no? I don’t got it!??!?”

It’d be really awesome if you could do this! I would give you 5 awesomesauce stars out of 5 😉

    Have a fantastic day!

  18. Carly on August 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I moved to AZ in March and I still haven’t seen a scorpion! I’m freaked out by them, although I heard they move slow. I’m more scared that my dogs will find one first and get curious…..

  19. hippierunner on August 26, 2011 at 12:04 pm

    Poor scorpion! 🙁

  20. Holly @ The Runny Egg on August 26, 2011 at 12:08 pm

You have no idea how slowly I scrolled through your post — I did not want to see a certain type of creepy crawly (starts with a T and rhymes with Barantula) and I was trying to brace myself!

Although I sure wouldn’t want to run into a scorpion either!!! Scary.

  21. Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) on August 26, 2011 at 12:10 pm

When my MIL (who lives in AZ) still lived at her place in Scottsdale (she moved up to Flag), she once found THREE (?!?!) scorps in one day. She was SO freaked out. She called me each time… the first time being frantic asking me what to do. So, I said… KILL IT. …and she says… with what ? lol. She ended up hitting it with a broom. She has two small doggies, so she made them sleep up on the bed with her for weeks after that (they normally sleep downstairs). SO SCARY!

  22. Alexa @ Simple Eats on August 26, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Ahh I would have freaked out if I saw that! Scorpions are SO scary! Good thing Bell wasn’t there!

  23. Stepfanie on August 26, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Scary! I found a scorpion in my sports bra, which was thankfully on a clothesline, still wet and not on my body, when I was in Honduras earlier this year. My first instinct: Grab the camera! I was at a vegan retreat, and my host still decided to send the scorpion on to his next life. They are no joke!

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2011 at 12:26 pm

      ahhhhhhh!!!!

  24. Amy on August 26, 2011 at 12:14 pm

I love that you saved the pic of the scorpion til the end, ha! Gross creepy………………….so glad your pilot took care of that!

  25. Molly on August 26, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Hey Gina! I am wondering what brand of almond butter you use…mine never looks that smooth!

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2011 at 12:26 pm

that’s the maranatha brand- i usually buy trader joes, but i got a huge jar of maranatha at costco and love it

  26. Hillary on August 26, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Mmmm yeah. I don’t think we have scorpions in MD, and I’m glad about that right now.

  27. Jessica on August 26, 2011 at 12:26 pm

That is the most disgusting bug I’ve ever seen!!!!

I do my workouts on my lap top too. 🙂

  28. Lisa @ Fresh Spinach on August 26, 2011 at 12:27 pm

That reminded me of the mouse I found outside of my apartment the other day. We didn’t kill him but I wasn’t thrilled to see him. If he gets inside, I figure the 2 cats will take care of the issue.
Also, did you blend your breakfast or just stir it up? I looks amazing!

  29. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on August 26, 2011 at 12:28 pm

ewww I would’ve freaked out!! We don’t have any around here, thank goodness!

  30. Jen @familyfoodfitnessandfun on August 26, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Oh my goodness! That would FA-REAK me out. Now I’m glad we get snow up here….kills anything and everything 😉
I did some TurboFire 45 this morning “Boom I got your boyfriend, I got your man!”

  31. Meg on August 26, 2011 at 12:46 pm

    I think I would’ve pooped myself!

On the other hand…breakfast looks amazing, as usual 😉

  32. mi-an on August 26, 2011 at 12:52 pm

i’ve made that similar bfast before but got it from angela’s ohsheglows. she makes all those overnite oats and there’s one she layered bfast oats with banana soft serve…man hecka good!

anyway, i would jumped so high if i saw that scorpion!

  33. Jin @ Health Ninja on August 26, 2011 at 12:53 pm

😀 can’t believe I ate such a thing in Shanghai. But probably you should try and fry it the next time – at least its no useless killing 😉 and it tastes a little bit like chips.

  34. Elizabeth @ RunWithSneakers on August 26, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I killed one of those bad boys in my house just yesterday. That’s how I know it’s time to call the pest control guy. I HATE scorpions, but I grew up in Phoenix so I’m kinda used to them. The ones in Texas hurt like heck, but aren’t as poisonous as those in AZ — my cat plays with them.

Gonna copy your b’fast tomorrow cause I’m lovin raw oats on these hot days. Yours looks great!

  35. Sophie @ LoveLiveAndLearn on August 26, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Ohmygosh I’d have been terrified! So glad we don’t have those over here!!
    Gorgeous breakfast though 🙂

  36. Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) on August 26, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Pretty sure I’m about to start thanking the cockroaches that sometimes show up around my place for not being scorpions.

Ok I won’t do that but maybe I can appreciate that although cockroaches ARE REALLY REALLY GROSS and seriously awful, at least they won’t sting me and/or kill my pets.

On that note, your breakfast looked lovely 😉

  37. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance on August 26, 2011 at 1:03 pm

OH MY GOSH that thing is INTENSE!! It was alive when you found it!?

  38. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on August 26, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Oh my goodness, I would have totally spazzed out if I’d seen that scorpion!! On the other hand, your breakfast sounds like it was absolutely delicious! Have a fabulous afternoon Gina!

  39. Emilia @ Namaste Gurl on August 26, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Never tried turbo fire, but might have to start doing so…. 🙂
    Enjoy your day!

I love Pitbull too! I won a trip to the Bahamas on the Bud Light cruise ship, and he is the musical performer. I refuse to be embarrassed about how excited I am to see him!!

  41. megan on August 26, 2011 at 1:35 pm

i think i just had a heart attack when i saw the pic of that scorpion beast! holy heebie jeebies !

  42. lindsay on August 26, 2011 at 1:57 pm

  43. Jaimie on August 26, 2011 at 2:03 pm

I feel your pain, we had one in our toilet this morning! It was just in there swimming laps : ) The hubs and I recently moved to New Mexico so I am getting used to all the southwest critters!

  44. Ana on August 26, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Where did you get the table with the baskets in the first picture? I have been looking for something EXACTLY like that for our bedroom!

  45. Angela @ momethis on August 26, 2011 at 2:07 pm

That bfast looks so good. I’m in FL wondering what Irene plans on doing. So I’d like to request a workout song… Rock You Like a Hurricane by The Scorpions. 🙂
Can’t wait to hear about your dinner party. Have fun!

  46. Lindsay on August 26, 2011 at 2:30 pm

I once woke up to a scorpion on my chest. I was asleep when I felt something bite me on my stomach, it started itching and when I looked down it was on my shirt right in front of my face. Eeek! I freaked out and jumped out of bed.

I’ve also had a few in the shower with me. I’m getting the willies just thinking about them.

  47. Ashley@MyFoodNFitnessDiaries on August 26, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Mmm your breakfast combo looks delish! Good choices on the ingredients!

  48. Ashley on August 26, 2011 at 2:38 pm

HUUUUGGGGHHHH!!! I think I just lost all my desire to move to the desert…. how did he kill him? I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night for a week!

  49. Colette on August 26, 2011 at 2:47 pm

I know you’re an AZ girl, like me, but a little scorpion advice:

1 – We never had a problem with scorpions upstairs, but we still put the crib legs in empty olive jars – they can’t climb glass
2 – Get rid of their food (ie crickets and other bugs)
3 – Put diatomaceous earth (can find it at any hardware store) near the thresholds or wherever you think they might be coming in. When they crawl through it, it basically dehydrates them and they die – but it’s SAFE for you/dogs/babies to touch. They also have a food grade version if you’re worried about ingestion.
4 – Also, put those sticky bug trap/tape things around the edges near the garage door (or wherever they’re getting in) they get trapped there and you (or Pilot) can just throw them away.
5 – Get a blacklight (found just about everywhere in AZ – even Walgreens) The adult (not the babies) scorpions glow!

Hope this helps! It doesn’t make them go away completely, but these are safe, effective ways to limit them in your house. Good Luck!

    • Reader on August 27, 2011 at 5:06 am

Another great tip I learned from a native AZ woman (I’m from Chicago but live here now) is to get a yard stick and wrap a ball of double sided tape on one end and stick it to the scorpion and carry it outside (or wherever u want to dispose of it)
Saw what I thought was one last night next to my couch, jumped on the couch, shined a light on it…it was a tassel from one of my throws… so terrified of them!

      • Fitnessista on August 27, 2011 at 10:54 am

        that’s so smart!

  50. Mandy on August 26, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Holy hell in a hand basket! A scorpion?! I cannot STAND arachnids. I would still be itching too much to write a post if it were me. Sheesh!
