Crrrrunch time

Hey friends <3 How are ya? LOVED reading your lists about what you’re lovin’ this week. I adore the fact that so many of you said that you’re loving not stressing. Things that seem like a big deal often don’t matter so much in the grand scheme of things Smile

Also, thank you so much to those of you who have sent beautiful comments, tweets and emails regarding today’s Oprah episode about military families. Your words always warm my heart and while this lifestyle isn’t easy, it’s very rewarding and I couldn’t be more thankful for my military man (Pilot swoonmaster of my dreams), squadron wife friends and all of your support. <3 Hugs to you, my friends.

So this morning, I had to have a sweet treat to quell the beast.

treat

Still rolling with my 30 day doctor detox recommendations, I made something delicious for the day: a lovely bowl of protein ice cream with almond milk, LOTS of frozen organic strawberries, 1 T raw cacao powder, 1.5 servings of protein, 1 T decaf espresso powder and one dark chocolate square crumbled on top. It was just what I needed Open-mouthed smile

Some other recent eats:

kale (2)

A massaged kale salad with cauliflower “rice” (the same salad I munched the other day) with seaweed snacks to crunch on top:

kale

Veg with a kidney bean hummus (kidney beans, garlic, oregano, cumin, sea salt and pepper)

veg

Stinky delicious drinky:

kombucha

Green juice (I’m so glad you guys liked the juice video!)

juice

Breakfast quinoa with raw honey, organic butter, almond milk, cinnamon + peppermint tea steeped in almond milk

bfast

It’s crunch time!!

I leave for Valdosta in the AM and per usual, haven’t packed a thing Surprised smile It makes life more exciting and as the Pilot says, if you want until the last minute, it only takes a minute.

It’s going to be SO FUN to see my squadron wife friends- I’ve missed them like crazy. There’s even going to be a fun detour on the way to Valdizzy—stoked.

I’m back to work, teaching, then home to pack!

See ya from the airport Open-mouthed smile

xoxo

Gina

Today’s tip: If you don’t have time to make juices every morning, make your batch for the week and freeze each in a glass jar. Defrost the night before and it will be waiting for you in the morning! If you want to have an AM smoothie and won’t have time to prep, put all of your ingredients in the blender the night before, pop the container in the fridge and in the morning, blend and go!

Something to talk about: I’m trying to figure out foods that I can pack and take with me this weekend. Protein powder in a baggie, fresh fruit and veg are all winners- any other ideas?? I’m also going to hit up Main Squeeze as soon as I get into V-town.

I have to try the quinoa breakfast, I have only had it for dinner and kidney bean hummus, looks so yummy. I love how its a twist on traditional hummus! Have a safe trip!

  2. Cassandra on January 27, 2011 at 7:40 pm

Your kale salads always look so good. I, however, cannot make them very well (apparently I need to work on my massage skills).

Could you do a quick post/run through on how to properly massage kale/how to make kale salads? Thanks!

Happy Travels! Be safe! I like pilots motto. Last minute packer here too 😉

  4. Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete on January 27, 2011 at 7:41 pm

I definitely do your smoothie tip — we have the magic bullet so I will blend everything the night before and then in the morning I just give it a quick “spin” and we’re good to go!

When I travel I bring a small container of oatmeal, nuts, and larabars.

Oh and from your last post — the pink tea I have is from Teavana and it is a mixture of Youthberry and Wild Orange Blossom — it turns pink after you brew? steep? Not sure what word to use there.

  5. Jena on January 27, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I pack pre-mixed baggies of oatmeal (large flake oatmeal, 2tbsp flax, 2tbsp wheat germ, pinch of sucanet, sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg) in a baggie, and bring an apple and a knife to work every morning. I brew up my oatmeal in a mug, and slice apple chunks on top. Maybe you can’t eat oatmeal right now, but I bet you could to a quinoa in water like this as well….

I’m going on vacation to an all-inclusive resort next week, and am actually seriously considering whether or not I should bring my own oatmeal baggies, or if this is being too obsessive-compulsive about what I eat.

i took my vitamix to an all-inclusive resort- you’re fine 🙂

I adore those city Starbucks mugs 🙂 I try and get one every place I visit!

  7. Katelyn on January 27, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Making smoothies ahead of time is my favorite tip, I make a green smoothie with two servings and refrigerate the rest for the next morning!

Giiiirl pack TONS of Lara’s, and obv some Buddha Bowls, aka my favorite combo is tons of spinach/kale, quinoa, azuki beans, and every condiment in the fridge:)

  8. Vanessa on January 27, 2011 at 7:57 pm

Never thought about the smoothie thing…I bet that saves a ton of time! That quinoa breakfast bowl looks delicious BTW.

    Does socca travel well?

  9. Kristina on January 27, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I like the cauliflower rice idea on top of the kale!!! I’m going to have to try that! Have a safe trip!

  10. Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness) on January 27, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I do both of those make-ahead tips! Juice freezes beautifully! I think I picked up the smoothie tip from Alton Brown initially. He recommended putting the frozen fruit in the blender the night before because it’ll melt just enough to make it easier to blend. I usually mix the protein powder in right before I blend, but everything else does great in the fridge overnight!

Wishing you safe travels! Have fun! 😀

  11. ashley@quasichick on January 27, 2011 at 8:10 pm

I like to make oat bars..usually do either do Love Veg and Yoga or Mama Peas 🙂 I make sure they have protein so I can use them as a meal replacement!

  12. Ari @ The Diva Dish on January 27, 2011 at 8:15 pm

Fun and safe travels! I love your idea about the early prep of juices. That would make things alot easier for me =] I have also been eyeing that breakfast quinoa. It looks amazing. I have a new found love for quinoa. It’s so tasty and good for you too =]

Hi Gina! I’ve been a huge fan of your blog for a couple years and now that I’m finally getting a grip and starting to comment on other blogs, and starting my own blog, I wanted to let you know how rockin’ I think Fitnessista is. I love your perspective on food, fitness and healthy living and am looking forward to more fitnessista-rific adventures 🙂

  14. Christin@purplebirdblog on January 27, 2011 at 8:20 pm

I made kidney bean dip one time, and it looked like the stuff on the inside of a nasty hot dog… all pink and gooey… tasted delicious though, lol!! 😉

    Safe travels Gina!

Awwww I did not watch Oprah today, my son is sick so I have been taking extra special care of him : ) but you know how I feel about you and the pilot, you both are amazing, strong, and wonderful people ; ) God bless all that serve to keep our country safe!

  18. Annette on January 27, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Have a fun trip! I always pack nuts, cheese sticks (goat cheese sticks maybe?!), celery/carrot sticks, and good protein bars (without extra crap). Hope those help 🙂

  19. gigi on January 27, 2011 at 8:33 pm

air popped pop corn travels well in a baggie 🙂

  20. Jen R. on January 27, 2011 at 8:45 pm

If you have time, pre-make some socca. They’re pretty sturdy so they should be fine in the car. This sounds gross but it’s actually good: chickpeas/lentils with tamari and olive oil in a glass jar. Fits in the cup holder ;P

  21. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 27, 2011 at 8:58 pm

Love the juicing make ahead tip..I have made ahead in the past and always stored in the fridge. Never the freezer. Come to think of it, I think Gena has also mentioned she freezes hers before she travels and lets them thaw on the trip.

Anyway, your protein ice cream looks awesome. If that’s on the detox-ok’ed list, I love your detox even more 🙂

Oprah, military families. I didnt watch it but just want to thank Pilot for his service and to you, for holding it all together while he’s gone. Traveling spouses/marriage is HARD. I know. And I dont go thru anything like long deployments.

    Safe travels!
    🙂

I was wondering after all of your healthy eating changes if you would still recommend trying the south beach diet for a college student that need to lose 25 pounds. I am physically active, lift wights, and run. I try to eat around 1500 calories a day, but I am not have much luck. What do you recommend?

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2011 at 12:52 am

      love south beach

  24. Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles on January 27, 2011 at 9:14 pm

Nice tip about throwing your ingredients in the blender and storing it in the fridge overnight. Never thought about that, but it would save some time in the morning!

  25. Maggie on January 27, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I’ll have to try that kidney bean humus!

my sister sent me some of those seaweed snacks a couple weeks ago. i can’t find them here is wisconsin, but she eats them all the time in cali. anyway, i LOVED them! i like that you crunch them on top of a salad. i sort of made a little taco with them and put veggie rice inside.

  28. Chris on January 27, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Freezing the juice is a revelation to me! I had never thought of that. I make green juice daily for my kids and this would be such a time saver. Do you have to freeze it in glass jars? Thanks for the tip!

  29. Errign on January 27, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Safe travels, Gina! Would prana/boomi bars fit into your detox thang? They’re all normal ingredients, nothin’ weird… I always like to travel with a few. 🙂 Wild Garden hummus tubes are pretty baller too – a nice little serving of hummus all set to be squeezed out!

  30. Jamie on January 27, 2011 at 10:24 pm

Ah! That hummus looks so good. I am way too freaked out by the smell of synergy to even take a sip!

  31. Molly @ MollyRunsFresh on January 27, 2011 at 11:20 pm

Lovely picture of you and the Hubs 🙂
I don’t care much for rice, but I have a freaky addiction to cauliflower so Cauli-Rice is foreseen in my future.
Would love to read about how the detox is treating you so far and if you are experiencing any side effects (positive and/or negative). Ciao!

  32. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on January 27, 2011 at 11:56 pm

I can get so sick of “travel foods.” I have to pack them a lot cause my class schedule is NUTZ on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bananas, apples, Mandarin oranges are always nice to the heavier nuts based travel foods.

  33. Jackie (SeeJacRun) on January 28, 2011 at 12:33 am

That protein ice cream looks wonderful! Love your “todays tip,” sometimes I decide against a morning smoothie because of i don’t want to get everything together- this will really help 🙂

  34. Sana on January 28, 2011 at 12:38 am

Have fun in Valdizzy! If you pack last min, you take less things!!

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2011 at 12:50 am

or 6 pairs of shoes.. bahah

  35. Gill (snaxandthecity) on January 28, 2011 at 3:34 am

    happy travels!
something i like to pack is rice cakes or any cracker with nut butter in the middle. by the time you get to eat it, it’s all smooshy and a bit soggy (stay with me here) and its tastes really sweet and amazing!

  36. Amanda on January 28, 2011 at 7:21 am

Amazeballs!!! I made some this week and have been having them as my afternoon snack with some fruit to power me through my workout and hold me over till dinner. I made mine with protein, peanut butter, cashew butter, chia seeds, soaked dates (just a few for stick), and a splash of water. They freeze awesome too so if you made a big batch you would have some for when you got home, even better!

I’m also now hooked on the bodyrocker workouts, they are hard!! What do you think about doing such short intense workouts over longer less intense workouts? I don’t like to go balls to the wall everyday because I worry about overtraining so it’s been hard to find the right balance.

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2011 at 1:55 pm

      looooove the amazeballs 🙂
i’d alternate the bodyrock workouts with reg intensity workout. hiit is only really effective if you don’t do it every day

Hehe I love the Pilot’s saying!

Eats for the car… maybe some trail mix? Nuts, dried fruit, dark chocolate? Hope you have a safe trip Gina! 🙂

  39. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on January 28, 2011 at 8:30 am

Safe travels to Valdizzy!! I ALWAYS bring a PB sandwich on any long trip. It can be eaten as a snack, or as a meal with some other sides!

  40. Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) on January 28, 2011 at 8:46 am

Mmm, protein ice cream and quinoa breakfast bowls… you’re making me hungry all over again!

I like bringing carrots and hummus with me, for a quick meal almond butter & natural jelly sammies on brown rice bread are amazing and don’t go bad easily, I love a good natural trail mix with dried fruit, nuts and seeds, maybe some carob chips…

    Have a good trip!

    xo

  41. Kara on January 28, 2011 at 8:54 am

My husband has the same philosophy as the Pilot when it comes to packing!

I always have nuts and oranges in my purse (well, it’s a diaper bag, but it works for a purse too!) for emergency snacking 🙂

  42. Ashley on January 28, 2011 at 9:14 am

All that food looks delish! I am adopting that philosophy immediately! I always wait til the last minute but now I have a cool phrase to explain why 😀

Great tips on prepping for the juices. Thanks! I never thought to try that.it’s why i havent had one in the mornings in over a month! I might have to prep, make and freeze instead! 🙂

Ok, this may fall under the TMI category; but when I eat mostly raw veg all day (I was thinking of your kale/cauliflower salad); my stomach feels like its as bloated as a balloon! Do you just roll with the veggie bloat or is there something you do to combat it?

    • Fitnessista on January 28, 2011 at 1:52 pm

      drink lots of water!
i was still scary bloated yesterday though :/
