Moons and Showers

This morning the Pilot was admiring my growing (and now shaking and moving!) belly,

and told me “I can’t believe you’re 6 months already.”

“Um… I’m pretty much 30 weeks.”

“So that’s 7 1/2 months? Ok, I feel better now. Because your arms and legs are still tiny, but this belly is like WHOMP”

This made me laugh. “Yes, my belly is like WHOMP” 🙂

8068bf6c36654971bd9bd33a5dded930_7

“Oh my god, so we only have 10 weeks or maybe less until she’s here. What else do we have to do?”

I keep saying it’s going to fly by, but it really is, especially between holidays and events. The holiday season is always such a fun time, and we’ll get the best gift of all when it’s all over.

Within the next few weeks, I have a couple of things that I’m really excited about: babymoon and baby shower.

We’ve been talking about taking a babymoon for a while, but time hasn’t allowed it with moving into the new casa and our work schedules. The original plan was to stay at Canyon Ranch in Lennox for a week or so, but now that I’m at the point where I can’t fly –technically I could, but I’d rather not risk it. The thought of being in labor on a plane scares the bejeezus out of me- we picked somewhere drivable: San Diego.

[Just seeing the ocean makes me so happy]

You guys have already given me so many awesome suggestions for things to do and places to stay, so I’m starting to plan out our trip per your recommendations. It’s one of the places we’ve both been to many times, but never together, and I know we’ll have an amazing time. We took a mini-babymoon to Vegas when we first announced we were expecting,

me (2) pilot (2)

vegas

but it will be nice to have one last hurrah with just the two of us.

As far as the baby shower goes, at first I wasn’t too stoked about it. I don’t like a lot of attention, which is why my wedding made me nervous –I used to be an extrovert but have turned into more of an introvert as time goes on- and baby showers and baby registries feel the same to me, like you’re asking people to buy you gifts. But, the closer we get to the shower, the more excited I am to spend the day surrounded with friends and family that I love so much. My family is HUGE, so getting them in the same place at the same time can be tricky. I’m very lucky to be home in Tucson right now, and even though I miss my good friends in Valdosta, they’ll be there in spirit and have even been helping my family from afar with the planning process. My good friend Hayley is flying here from Atlanta for shower, and I can’t wait to see her.

My mom was asking me about any baby shower games that I liked, and I couldn’t think of very many. I tried to explain to her the one where they put melted chocolate bars in baby diapers and guests try to guess which candy it is. She said, “That’s disgusting.” Haha.

Did you go on a babymoon?

What’s the coolest/weirdest baby shower game you’ve played?

I’ve played the candy bar/diaper game, and as strange as it was, it was a LOT of fun. I guess it just depends on your audience and whether they can handle a little poo. 😉

We have the same Kate Spade iPhone case =) haha
And you are officially the cutest pregnant lady ever.

Love the belly even if it is like whomp 😛 my husband and I are moving to San Diego next week from Virginia! I think babymoons are such a cool idea, hope you guys have a great time.

Weirdest baby shower game has to be the melted candy bar in the diaper one…also the one where you try baby food and guess what it is, some of those things just taste gross!

Aww your belly is gorgeous!! I can’t believe you’re already 7 months!! Where did the time go?

  6. Blake @ Blake Bakes on October 24, 2011 at 3:53 pm

At a baby shower we played a game where everyone started with a necklace. If you said the word baby, and someone caught you, that person got to take your necklace. The person with the most necklaces at the end of the shower won a prize.

  7. Cynthia on October 24, 2011 at 3:53 pm

At a coworkers baby shower we each decorated a onesie or bib with fabric paint – a practical and fun activity:)

  8. kara on October 24, 2011 at 3:54 pm

you are the cutest lil pregnant lady!
i haven’t been to any friends baby showers, or any recently, but i just heard about that candy bar game and i think it is AWESOME. you have to play that one!!!

  9. Elizabeth on October 24, 2011 at 3:54 pm

You are so cute pregnant!! Have fun on the babymoon 🙂

A fun game to play at a shower is match the baby with the celebrity parent. Like who is Apple’s celebrity parent: J. Lo or Gwyneth Paltrow… it’s an easy fun game to play!! Congrats!

  10. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on October 24, 2011 at 3:55 pm

AHahhahah please don’t do that shower game! But get that cake. It is GORGEOUS. And seriously your belly is like WHOMP and the Pilot knows what he’s talking about. He is going to be such a good dadddyyyy!

  11. Running Betty on October 24, 2011 at 3:56 pm

My friend and I created “Who wanted to be a millionaire” for a shower once. I think it was “Who wants to be the baby mama?” and it had lots of parenting trivia. It was a huge hit, but it was about 9 years ago so I no longer have the file of Q/A to share w you.
I took a babymoon to Walt Disney World! It got us away from the cold Missouri weather (go Cardinals!) and allowed me to swim and feel weightless in the pool when 6 mos pregnant. I couldn’t go on a lot of the rides, though, so we took the baby when she turned one – and lo and behold I couldn’t ride the rides AGAIN. My girls are 14 mos apart! 🙂

  12. Amanda on October 24, 2011 at 3:57 pm

I love that conversation between you and the Pilot. He’s too funny!

Caitlin (Healthy Tipping Point) recently did a post about hosting a baby shower and I thought she had a great idea to have everyone write messages on diapers for the mom-to-be. That way, when you’re up in the middle of the night or just need a laugh, there’s a funny/mushy message to brighten your day. 🙂

  13. Emily on October 24, 2011 at 3:57 pm

It’s a little on the pricy side (ok, a lot on the pricy side), but if you really want to splurge, check out the Montage in Laguna Beach. It’s GORGEOUS!!!

  14. Claire@Navigating North on October 24, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Like WHOMP. How cute! I love your blog!

  15. Lauren @ Ultra Lauren on October 24, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Not technically a game, but a fun activity for everyone is having friends use fabric paint to paint onesies or shirts for the little one. I also like the guess the belly size game with a ribbon, it’s super easy and can be hysterical.

You look so great. Enjoy San Diego.

  16. Kimberly @ Healthy Strides on October 24, 2011 at 3:59 pm

We did the candy bar game at my shower, too. It was so sad to see such good candy go to waste! One of the most interesting games was the guests had to guess the cost of essential baby items – bottles, diapers, wipes – and then I got to keep everything. Twas awesome.

We didn’t go on a baby moon. My husband is a teacher and by the time he got done with school, there really wasn’t much time. I really wish we had.

  17. Lindsey on October 24, 2011 at 4:00 pm

One thing I did a a baby shower I hosted since the mama-to-be was not a game fan is I bought plain oneies and fabric paint and everyone decorated their own onesie. I all bought stencils and other embellishments – it was a lot of fun!

  18. Brigid on October 24, 2011 at 4:02 pm

My favorite baby shower game: fill up little baby bottles with water and see who can drink it the fastest! It was a hit at my friend’s shower. There was also the one where you try to guess what the baby food is, but I’m totally skeeved by the ingredients in Gerber. Ha. I’ve also heard of a fun game where everyone gets pictures of babies to cut up and turn into a collage of what they think the baby will look like. My all-time fave shower activity is decorating onesies: buy blank ones in a few different sizes and supply fabric paints, markers and iron-ons. They are always a ton of fun and super personal!

    • mountain girl heidi on October 24, 2011 at 4:36 pm

The onesie idea sounds awesome!!! I’ll have to keep that in mind for a future shower. I like the idea of moving past the traditional games into the crafty world. One of my best friends finally had her wedding this year (after 6 years of marriage), and in place of traditional bridal shower games, we made 6 veil kits filled with all sorts of random and crazy craft supplies. We split up all the guests into 6 different groups, and together they made a veil. After 20 minutes or so, the bride to be modeled all the veils.

  19. Sana on October 24, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Hahah I think the baby shower is more for the people invited to play silly games and enjoy the baby you are going to have!

  20. Hayley on October 24, 2011 at 4:04 pm

SQUEEEEEEEEEE!!! Got my invite to the shower this past weekend! I once went to a shower where we had to match the names of celebrity parents with the names of their babies. I of course won because all I apparently do is read fitnessista.com and gossip blogs. I can’t wait to see you either! xoxoxo

  21. Karen on October 24, 2011 at 4:06 pm

YAY for being 10 weeks aways!! I am having my baby shower in almost two weeks and not sure what type of games they are planning to have at the shower. I told them I totally love the poopy diaper game but we’ll see what they come up with that day. Today is my three year anniversary so I am hoping the hubby surprises me with a babymoon/weekend but we will see what he has up his sleeves. Good luck with everything, you are looking wonderful!!

  22. Anna @ On Anna's Plate on October 24, 2011 at 4:11 pm

When I was in grad school, we threw a coed shower for a couple that was having a baby, and played a “chug beer through a bottle” drinking contest . It was fun– until we realized that we’d bought the bottled with the SMALLEST nipple holes EVER– it took forever just to chug one beer. Which I guess is what we get for trying to incorporate a drinking game with a baby shower 🙂

  23. Jen Correa @ Mom's Gotta Run on October 24, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I didn’t have a babymoon before my first child. I wish I did. Most of my friends are doing it nowadays though. I definitely recommend it.

  24. Ashleyr on October 24, 2011 at 4:12 pm

A really fun one is to give everyone a paper plate and a pen and they have to put the paper plate on their head and see who can draw the cutest baby. It’s really hard!

  25. Megan on October 24, 2011 at 4:15 pm

We played pin the sperm on the uterus, similar to pin the tail on the donkey. I won! It was a big hit. Also someone made a playlist of songs with the word “baby” in the title and everyone guessed the artist/song and wrote them down on a piece of paper. Whoever got the most right got a prize.

  27. Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs on October 24, 2011 at 4:26 pm

You are seriously the cutest. At my sister’s babyshower we played a game like Memory. You make a grid with all the pairs of different phrases, and then when someone gets a match (you go around the room and make guesses) they get a corresponding candy bar. For example: If you get the match “Twins” you get double mint gum. There are some cute matches, I just can’t remember off the top of my head because we played the same game for my wedding shower, One was like “Wedding bill” and you got a 100 Grand bar.

I think my sister has a list of the rules and everything if you want me to email them to you. It’s way better than the diaper one haha.

OH you can also play present bingo. You make bingo cards of presents you’re most likely to get, and people play while you are opening presents. I liked this for my bridal shower because it’s less awkward for the person opening them when the other people are engaged in a game as well.

  28. mountain girl heidi on October 24, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I went to a shower once with my husband (everyone was invited), and the girl planning it pretty much forced all the guys to put an eye mask on and try baby food for a “game”. My husband only came because he was told all the guys would be downstairs watching a game and hanging out. Nope! Long story short, I can tell when my hubby is about to blow a fuse, and that just about did it. Games are fun and good, but don’t force people to play — especially if a person looks uncomfortable and irritable. It was not a very well blended party.

  31. Krissy on October 24, 2011 at 4:42 pm

I just hosted a baby shower last week for a co-worker. I wanted to do something a little less “girly”, as most of our office is men and they would feel a little strange with the diaper/candy bar game! I ended up downloading a bunch of clips off of youtube (really easy) and making a montage of funny baby clips from movies and TV- ex. Modern Family with Lilly, Cam and Mitchell, Stewie from Family Guy, Look Who’s Talking, Knocked-up, etc. It was HILARIOUS! I just edited it in iMovie (my first one, so easy) and it took me less than an hour to make. Let me know and I can send it to you, it made the mommy to be cry from laughter 🙂

We’re going to Mexico in a few weeks. We definitely wanted to get away before I’m not able to fly. Plus – living in Alberta, Canada, a winter getaway is almost a necessity!

  33. Lois on October 24, 2011 at 4:42 pm

2 fun games i recently played at a baby shower –

    (1) baby food eating relay race – split guests into teams, each person in the team gets a jar of baby food (or if u are feeling nice, a cup of applesauce), and see which team eats it the quickest.

    (2) baby item trivia – buy a bunch of baby-related items (e.g., around 15-20, like baby wipes, baby spoons, a packet of onsies, baby toothbrush, baby lotion, baby shampoo, etc. – can definitely make it practical by buying stuff that you will need).. write all the items down on a list.. show each item to all the guests, and have them guesstimate the price of each item. person that is closest to the actual total for all items wins!

  34. Darien on October 24, 2011 at 4:46 pm

when a friend and i planned a co-ed shower for another good friend, we did a fun play-doh one. we gave everyone who attended a tiny little party favor size play-doh and the expecting mom and dad left the room for 90 seconds. everyone made little play-doh babies and put them all on a coffee table. when mom and dad came back in, they picked a couple of favorites and gave out little prizes. that one was probably the most fun game we did.

  35. Darien on October 24, 2011 at 4:49 pm

oh, we also bought (had donated) and crap ton of plain white onesies in different sizes and asked everyone to decorate them with puff paint and fabric markers. we had SO MANY cute and funny onesies for baby by the time it was over! easily the best favors. as time goes on, i love love love seeing pictures of the baby on facebook wearing some of the onesies from the shower. not all of them were politically correct or child appropriate (military group..a little crass) but they were great fun!

I didn’t go on a babymoon, per se. We were going to Aruba for Xmas anyway and Skylar’s due date was mid Feb. So I had about 10 weeks or so, give or take, til she was to arrive. I had my doctor’s blessings to travel and knew Dr’s in Aruba should I need one. It was a our last vacay as just the two of us; it was great. I sat on the beach, floated in the ocean, and did as little as possible.

You will cherish your last hurrah and San Diego is my town. If you need ANYTHING at all while you are here from a midwife to a recommendation on where to get a green juice to where to get a massage or a great Louis bag 🙂 I can help.

    xo

All the best to you as you!

  40. Alison on October 24, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Technically you’re just shy of 7 months, since there are more than 4 weeks (28 days) in a month 😉

My shower was yesterday and we played a game where my husband had answered questions about baby facts (how many hours a day does a baby sleep? how many diapers a day does a baby go through?) and our baby specifically (like, do you think your baby will be born with hair? how many kids do you want to have?) and everyone had to write down what we guessed his answers were. We also played guess how big my belly is with ribbon (and then I actually measured and went around and compared everyone’s ribbons to mine). Both were fun! There were also some baby-themed crossword puzzles and word scrambles on the table that people did after finishing lunch.

But mostly it was so much fun being with friends and family, some of whom I hadn’t seen at all during pregnancy!

    • Stephanie on October 25, 2011 at 9:36 am

Everyone I talk to calculates pregnancy different. it is so crazy! Like, for example, I am just shy of 28 weeks and supposedly about to enter the third trimester but technically the third trimester should start at 26 weeks and 4/5 days if you divide 40 weeks by 3. I’ll never get it. It is funny though that everyone and every website has their own calculations.

  41. JennyO on October 24, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I just had my baby shower and the best “game” was making an alphabet book. There were sheets of construction paper cut in 1/2, each piece had a letter in the corner. All the guests got one and drew something that started with that letter and signed it. The hostesses took them to get laminated and made a book out of them.

  42. Sonia (the Mexigarian) on October 24, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I’ve been to only a couple of baby showers and those were years ago. i remember tasting baby food, and cutting a length of ribbon that we guess to be able to be the size of the pregnant belly.
