Morning Rituals

Hey hey hey ๐Ÿ˜€ Happy Humpday aka Indian Food Wednesday ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope youโ€™re having a lovely morning.

After I got home from the gym last night, dinner was a meal of easy components instead of a full-up shebang.

I made a massaged kale salad:

salad

{And it always tastes better if you sing to it while you massage}

-organic purple kale

-lime juice, olive oil, mashed avocado, garlic, cayenne, Nama shoyu

-organic grape tomatoes

The Pilot enjoyed his kale salad with saffron rice (short grain brown rice cooked in veggie broth with saffron, sea salt and tumeric) + organic rotisserie chicken

pilot's dinner

and I had mine grain bowl style with quinoa and Goddess dressing ๐Ÿ™‚

grain bowl

The original plan was to have saffron rice on top of the salad, but I kind of failed in cooking it. It was really chewy (even though it cooked for 30 minutes- maybe it needed to cook longer?) and the taste wasโ€ฆ off. [The Pilot didnโ€™t eat his, either] Usually we LOVE saffron rice and usually I have no probs making it.. guess Iโ€™m still getting the hang of the gas stove :/ So I replaced it with quinoa. Ya win some, ya lose some, right?

So this morning, I thought it would be fun to talk about morning rituals ๐Ÿ˜€

Here are some of the things that happen in our house every single day:

-6:15-6:30am: We wake up. Bella hears the alarm go off and jumps on the bed to cover us each in Bella kisses. Itโ€™s pretty much the best way to wake up ๐Ÿ™‚ This morning, she was laying on my stomach, flipped onto her back and giving me Spiderman (upside down) kisses.

-While the Pilot showers, I take Bell out and we either go for a walk or play in the backyard, I leave to workout, or I get ready for work. [Today it was the 3rd]

bell (2)

-Breakfast + blog

me

-Make a to-do list for the day [this happens everyday. I have a small notebook I carry around with me and inside, you can find my entire life. Itโ€™s the only way I get everything done]

-Pack snacks (for work all day, or to last me until lunch if Iโ€™m not working that day)

What are some of your morning rituals? Do you always work out in the morning? Do you make daily to-do lists?

Iโ€™m off- see ya later!
xoxo

I love mornings and mine sound similar to your’s. When Hubbs doesn’t go in early, we wake up, he showers, I feed and take out Koda, then make breakfast. We eat together, then go to the office for blogging (me) and work stuff (him).
Koda is so happy in the mornings and I love it- and I’m looking forward to adding baby smiles in the morning soon!

    • Fitnessista on August 10, 2011 at 10:59 am

me too.. i can’t even imagine how amazing it will be to wake up to a baby!

  2. Nicole on August 10, 2011 at 11:01 am

The toughest part of my morning routine is convincing myself to get up ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m totally not a morning person! I will take whatever short cuts I can think up while lying there just to be able to hit snooze one more time. Once I’m up, its a mad rush to get out of the house looking decent, with (hopefully) food packed and all my necessities on board. A couple of weeks ago I forgot my keys and locked myself out of the house not once, but TWICE ๐Ÿ™‚

My Summer Morning Ritual on a Running Weekday (MWF): Get up at 4:40am – Run 4-6 miles. Then shower and get dressed; 6am – Wake my son, make his breakfast and get his clothes out, lunches and snacks ready for kids; 6:45am – Drop off my son for camp; 7am – Drop off my daughter @ daycare; 7:15am – On the bus to work… That’s what I did today and I’m tired thinking about it!

  4. Sam on August 10, 2011 at 11:02 am

Yay! I actually DID eat indian food today. Butter chicken at 10:30 am. Random, but i was hungry! I usually wake up, make some coffee and wash my face, eat breakfast while reading blogs, then get ready and go to work! On my days off it is similar. I am not an a.m. workout person but I am trying to change that.

  5. Ali @ peachesandfootball.wordpress.com on August 10, 2011 at 11:04 am

I should make daily to-do lists. I tend to make weekly lists and cross off as I go and add when I think of something. Just tried quinoa for the first time last night. Not bad!!

  6. allison @ thesundayflog on August 10, 2011 at 11:06 am

i wake up and hop in the shower at 6:30, breakfast and the today show while packing my lunch, out the door at 7:40 for work and home at 5pm. LONG days at the office ๐Ÿ™

  7. Beth (well ill be) on August 10, 2011 at 11:06 am

My husband wakes up to run. I snuggle with my pups for a little longer, then get up to walk them. Usually about halfway through our walk, my husband catches up with us and finishes the walk with us. Then the craziness of getting ready for work/making lunches etc happens.

  8. Allison @ Food For Healing on August 10, 2011 at 11:07 am

lately i’ve been making more to-do lists since i have so much on my plate that i need to get done!
my mornings start the same, i crawl outta bed and rush to get ready for work. It will be nice one day when i enjoy going to my job and do what i love. but ya gotta pay the bills somehow right!

  9. Katie @ Changing Patterns on August 10, 2011 at 11:08 am

For me my mornings are pretty standard…wake up, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast. I used to work out in the mornings, but my body hates getting up earlier then it already does ๐Ÿ™‚

At the beginning of every week I do plan my week with workouts, events to go to, dinner dates with friends, etc. I use the calendar on my iPhone, which helps so much!

  10. The Teenage Taste on August 10, 2011 at 11:09 am

    I have a similar morning routine…except I wake up 2 hours later. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on August 10, 2011 at 11:09 am

Our mornings seem so hectic compared to yours! We wake up at 6, and I go to make coffee and pack up both of our lunches for the day while my boyfriend gets ready. Then I get ready and dressed while my boyfriend irons his dress shirt then I’ll play with the puppy, do dishes and then head out the door around 7:15. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I feel like it takes forever are we’re go go go! I go to the gym after work.

    • Fitnessista on August 10, 2011 at 11:19 am

we do a lot of that at night- the pilot does dishes and i pack his lunch before we go to bed. it makes the mornings less hectic, for sure

  12. Emma (Namaste Everyday) on August 10, 2011 at 11:11 am

I have to write EVERYTHING down, too, or else I am completely lost. But, as my dad always says, you can only trust a busy person to get something done!

  13. Jen on August 10, 2011 at 11:11 am

I love making my morning cup of tea, and drinking it while I read blogs. I think a lot of bloggers like to wake up and eat breakfast while they read or write. It’s perfect quiet time! My fiance is usually still in bed when I get up and do this, unless he has an early session (he’s a personal trainer.) When I get out of bed, I let the kitten into our bedroom, and the two of them snuggle together like the cutest boys I’ve eva seen! About an hour after breakfast, I hit the gym and take a spin class, or do a strength session in the weight room. I love my morning workouts! It’s funny how we all have our morning routines. ๐Ÿ™‚

You should post pictures of your notebook! I wanna see your “life”.

  15. Amelia on August 10, 2011 at 11:14 am

Our morning rituals are about the same. I normally get Kevin out the door with breakfast and his lunch packed by 7:30 or so, then I figure out if I have to go to work, class, or the gym. I am looking forward to the end of classes right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life on August 10, 2011 at 11:19 am

My mornings are always the same… alarm at 6:45, hit snooze until 7am, shower, get dressed for work, make lunch, and then make a quick egg/cheese sandwhich and an iced coffee (and feed cats while egg is cooking)… it never changes ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on August 10, 2011 at 11:19 am

Mornings always consist of blogging and coffee for me. Even if I’m not posting, I’m always reading. Lately it’s included yoga, too, and that has been pretty fantastic.

  18. Lauren A. on August 10, 2011 at 11:25 am

lately i have been going straight for some lukewarm water with lemon to sip in the morning. then i usually go through a similar routine of checking e-mails, prepping food and snacks, eating breakfast, and getting ready for work. sometimes i work out in the morning, but other times i just like to enjoy the peace of the morning. and i loooove making to do lists–the best part is checking things off the list!

  19. Kathryn (Flopoodle) on August 10, 2011 at 11:25 am

I try to leave myself plenty of time in the morning to feed the cats, eat, shower, dress, and now blog, but somehow I always end up rushing out the door a few minutes late! I blame twitter ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. Emily on August 10, 2011 at 11:27 am

My morning rituals include drinking a ton of water, having a light snack, hitting the gym, and then coming home for breakfast and blogging ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Laura on August 10, 2011 at 11:29 am

I love puppy cuddles in the morning! Its hard to leave because when my dog is just waking up he’s extra cuddly. During the week, I just throw on some clothes, grab food, and head to work for the day. Not too exciting.

  22. Lindsey on August 10, 2011 at 11:29 am

Mine varies every day, but usually I wake up between 6-6:45am (6am if I am working out in the am), eat breakfast/read blogs, shower/get ready and leave just after 8am for work!
I am the queen of to do lists, love them!!

  23. Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather on August 10, 2011 at 11:32 am

Mornings are my favorite time. They almost always include a workout, always coffee, food prep for the whole day and gettin ready to go to work.

love that pic of you and the little cute belly. just went w/ my sis in law to her ob appt yesterday (she’s about 13 wks) and saw the little person inside of her! my niece was with us and she kept waving at him/her! ๐Ÿ™‚ we don’t know the sex yet.

the indian and i wake up around 7-715, he usually wakes up before me, showers, while i stay in bed for 5 more mins…then i also get up around 730…then we have coffee together, start studying…we take a break around 1 for gym/yoga, then study again from 4-9… this is our summer schedule…we’re reviewing for the boards so … nothing fancy…

  25. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance on August 10, 2011 at 11:47 am

That’s such a good idea to make daily “to do” lists! I should start to do that and maybe I wouldnt forget to do things so often… haha ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on August 10, 2011 at 11:48 am

I love working out in the morning because then you have the rest of the day to anything else! I also feel more energized when I workout in the morning for some reason.

  29. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on August 10, 2011 at 11:53 am

I wake up, sleepily get ready, mow down some breakfast and go to work. Totally not exciting. lol!

  30. Shayla @ The Good Life on August 10, 2011 at 11:54 am

I have a morning ritual every morning that starts at 5am to have coffee, make breakfast for the hubby (I eat breakfast after my workout), make and pack lunch for hubby (can’t wait for the day I get to do this for our kiddies too!), and then off to the gym. If it’s a rest day for me the routine is pretty much the same, we just get to sleep in for an extra hour which is the best! ๐Ÿ™‚

I never usually make lists, only lists I really make are for groceries. A must for me since whenever I get to the grocery store I gotta stick to what we need and not just get what I want! ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. Faith @ For the Health of It on August 10, 2011 at 11:57 am

I’m definitely a to-do-lister, and it has to be on paper – none of the virtual, Microsoft Word stuff, I need that satisfying feeling of physically checking something off! My morning rituals include blogging, taking Hales for a walk in the field across from my house, and of course- CAWFEE!

  32. Marie on August 10, 2011 at 11:58 am

Yeah, I think we’re gonna have to see a video of that singing to the Kale salad…to see how it’s done and all. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have been trying so hard to workout in the mornings instead of the twins’ nap but have been struggling to get myself out of bed since I figure I can always do it during their nap. I love workouts though and get it done regardless but it’s great to have that ‘high’ in the morning and have time to do other things later in the day. ๐Ÿ™‚ I always make lists or I forget about them. Something called the “Mommy brain.” ;0)

  33. Hillary on August 10, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I love morning rituals, especially in the summer. Get up, read my book in bed for a few minutes, make coffee, read the news/blogs, go to the gym. It wakes me up slowly and comfortably. Love it!

  34. Christie on August 10, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I love posts like these! It’s so much fun to peak into other’s rituals. ๐Ÿ™‚ We’re in transition right now. Husband just retired from the Marine Corps, I’m heading back to Florida for my last two weeks of yoga therapy training, and the kids are enjoying their last two weeks of summer. So….no schedule yet, but getting ready to set one back up. Of course the kids have basic schedules always….meals, bedtimes, and physical therapy for my son, ballet for my daughter.

  35. Shannon on August 10, 2011 at 12:16 pm

While I’m still waking up and laying in bed (usually contacts still out) I’ll grab my phone and check all my portals. Email addresses, texts, calls, facebook, twitter, blog. Usually there’s nothing urgent, but I like to know that if someone has sent me something that requires a quick response I don’t wait until later to check.

  36. megan on August 10, 2011 at 12:22 pm

i am a to-do list lover! i used to make lists in categories like, “things to buy at grocery store” “things to do” “people to email” then i’d make a master list to track all of my lists. once someone pointed out how redonk this was, i reformed my ways and just roll with one list now. i have to put EVERYTHING on it though.. even “take out trash” “empty dishwasher” or i forget/don’t get it done. type A, much?

  37. mary on August 10, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Oh yeah, what would i do w/o my morning ritual? I better get use to it once this lil’ one comes, as i am not sure what my morning ritual will be then, probably more like ‘morning chaos’, ha ha.

For me, wake up at 5:30am, back from gym at 7am – drink herbs, wait for hubby to get out of shower, shower, make b-fast smoothie and eat while getting ready and out the door by 8am! Pretty much wash, rinse, spin and repeat every day:)
I have a love/hate relationship with my routine, yours sounds much better:)

  40. Meghan @ StruggleMuffins on August 10, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I’m an avid morning To Do lister as well! Love my To Do list notebook and I’d be lost without it. I have, in fact, lost it before and I was, in fact, lost because of it haha. Not fun. I also tend to whip up a lot of packable snackables for my day early in the morning. Sometimes I’ll do it the night before but I’m more efficient in the morning. Love mornings!

  41. Kelly on August 10, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I love mornings! I didn’t used to but I absolutely love my mornings.

For me during the week, alarm goes off at 3:45am. I get up, get dressed, feed Gizmo and work out. This became a necessity when I did P90X and I just continued because after 90 days I was used to it. I usually finish working out about 5am or 5:15am, then I make my green smoothie. I get on the computer while I eat my smoothie. I usually have it in a bowl sprinkled with granola…weird I know. Then I’m in the shower no later than 5:45am. Out of the shower, I get dressed, pack my lunch that I made the night before, give Gizmo some attention and out the door to walk to the train by 6:45am. On the weekends I’m up at 5am, feed Gizmo, get dressed and out the door by 5:45am to meet my friend to ride the bike trail. I usually get back about 9:15am and make my smoothie and get on with my day.

  42. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on August 10, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Ooooh yes I’m a to do list queen! Every single day, I write down my top 5 things I want to get accomplished. I’d be lost without it! And the satisfaction of crossing things off is oh so lovely too! Heading to the gym is one of my morning rituals, and because I take so many snacks to work, I just prepare them the night before because it takes so long!

  43. Alyssa @ Life of bLyss on August 10, 2011 at 1:39 pm

I always wash my face right when I wake up, hit my foam roller if I’m sore, and let Chloe out and feed her. I typically wait till I’m hungry for some breakfast. ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. Emily on August 10, 2011 at 1:39 pm

So glad I’m not the only one to still use paper! Yes, I have a notebook and in it you can find my life too ๐Ÿ™‚ My morning ritual is writing said to-do list whilst having a little coffee.

  45. Sarah on August 10, 2011 at 2:05 pm

wake up, work out, shower/get ready for work, make breakfast/lunch/snacks and pack it all up (I eat breakfast at work too), drive to work, work until about 10 am then jump online to check your blog ๐Ÿ™‚

  46. Jin on August 10, 2011 at 2:45 pm

The salad looks great, sadly I still didn’t manage to find some kale here in germany…

And I need my morning as well – I think it is so important to get a good start in the day. so i love those days of the week I have the time to start with a good workout and a nice breakfast.
Usually I prepare my food for the day the evening before, but then I have to pack it in the morning. So even without sport I’ll take at least a hour before leaving the house in the morning to avoid stress.

  47. Laura on August 10, 2011 at 2:56 pm

I love hearing about other people’s morning schedules! <—weird.

I get up around 5:45 and kiss my husband, get dressed in the dark, and go into the living room to wake Reba up, where she is snoozing on the couch. Reba is our golden retriever. ๐Ÿ™‚ I let her out with food and water, and usually go for a run or to the gym. By the time I get home (around 7), my husband is gone to work and I watch the Today Show, eat breakfast, and drink coffee. 8:00 is shower, and 8:35 is a treat for Reba, then out the door! It's so funny…around 8:30, Reba goes into the kitchen and waits because she knows a treat is coming/mama is leaving! Dogs have their morning rituals, too!

Girl, I’m digging that kale salad. I make a similar one with lemon juice, craisins, pomegranite (sp?) and walnuts–just let it sit in the fridge and break down the sugars add a little olive oil and bam…even the biggest kale skeptics loves it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I wrote 6 ways to increase your veggies today–should have added the kale salad as one…looks delish.

I used to have morning rituals before I had Skylar and a FT job…but since then, they all have gone out the window. I will go in 3 month spurts I guess you’d say where the days are similar, i.e. I am working out in the morning, but then schedules will change and I am back to working out in the evenings. I just try to roll with things as they come ๐Ÿ™‚

I keep my to do lists in my head. <–which is why sometimes I forget about things on my list. lol

    Have a great day!

I am such a schedule person it is rediculous, even when I can “sleep in” I will be up earlier than my hubby and following my routine. Typically since starting my job it involves waking up, possibly working out, then eating breakfast while reading blogs, checking facebook, and reading e-mail. When I don’t workout first thing our cat will follow me downstairs and wait while I make breakfast (hoping it involves yogurt) and if I am eating yogurt he will wait patiently until I finish so he can lick the bowl clean. So I guess we all have our routines, including our pets ๐Ÿ™‚
