My 2015 fitness resolutions

Hi! Howโ€™s the morning going? Hope you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday weekend! I have some fun Tucson pics to share, but in the meantime, I thought it would be fun to talk about fitness resolutions for the new year. While Iโ€™m kind of on the fence about resolutions (I am a  HUGE fan of inspiration boards, however!), I love to discover new workouts, push myself to avoid plateaus, and make time for the activities I really enjoy (like yoga, hiking, and dance).

Fitness goals

My 2015 fitness resolutions:

Stay consistent. Even when my eating is a little across the board (helloooooo Christmas cookies), Iโ€™ve found that my energy levels, skin, and fitness stays in check because I work out consistently. Itโ€™s a huge mental lifesaver for me -I feel much less stressed and antsy when Iโ€™ve gotten in a workout- and there are so many formats that I enjoy, so itโ€™s easy to stick with a workout plan. Iโ€™d like to keep this going in the new year, and continue my personal focus to eat well most of the time, and get in around 4-5 weekly workouts.

Practice yoga. Speaking of consistency, something that Iโ€™ve completely fallen off the wagon with is YOGA. I love it, I need it, I suck at making time for it. Since I teach almost every day, I donโ€™t usually have the time to dedicate to a full class. I need to remind myself that I practice can be 10 minutes, and Iโ€™m always so happy when Iโ€™ve gotten in a little quiet flow (perhaps with some Michael Buble or Bronwyn in the background). I still would like to do yoga teacher training in the new year, so I feel like even if I donโ€™t end up teaching, it will be great encouragement to practice on a regular basis again.

Buddha

Prevent injury. Injuries are the worst (especially when youโ€™re clumsy and do things like fall down stairs or hack your thumb with a steak knife). Over time, Iโ€™ve become more aware of the things that make my knees angry, and have avoided them like the plague. Some things that help: avoiding high impact on consecutive days, keeping my leg muscles strong (strength training helps to prevent compensation to make up for week muscles, which could lead to unsafe movement patterns and thus, injury), and keeping my sneakers fresh. Old shoes can lead to compensation, too, especially if youโ€™re a pronator like yours truly. Iโ€™m on a current mission for new running shoes. Iโ€™ve been using the Reebok ONE Cushions for a couple of years, but would like to switch it up! Guess Iโ€™ll be visiting a running store in San Diego to get some ideas.

Take a flamenco class. Iโ€™ve been wanting to try it FOREVER, and found some adult classes in our area. Itโ€™s happening.

Flamencofest2

(Photo from the Flamenco Festival at Casa Vicente in Tucson)

Continue to challenge myself with weights. In the past, I was guilty of getting into the same weights routine and doing the same exercises and weight selection each time. This year, I think I was successful at switching it up, and Iโ€™d like to continue to add additional stressors (increased weight, different modes, balance/stability, unilateral work, etc) to my personal routine.

Add in one round of sprints each week. Preferably this will be during an Orangetheory class, but if Iโ€™m not able to make it to a formal class, sprints are a quick workout option I can do anywhere. Working on sprints is whatโ€™s going to help increase leg power and speed.

Orange theory 1 of 1 2

Beat my half marathon PR. Speaking of speed, now that I FINALLY busted my half marathon PR, I would love to eventually do sub 1:50. Itโ€™s a huge goal, but I think I could crush it with some consistent running -much easier since the weather is glorious here- and interval training.

Race photo

Paddle board more oftenโ€ฆ because itโ€™s the best.

Yolo board 1 of 1 5

Continue to stay active through another pregnancy (fingers crossed). Itโ€™s not really a secret that Iโ€™d like to get pregnant with baby #2 in the new year. If weโ€™re blessed with a second beeb, Iโ€™d like to continue teaching and working out until delivery.

Hereโ€™s me post-treadmill, 40 weeks pregnant, and I didnโ€™t think my belly was that big. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Belly40weeks

Letโ€™s hear it! What are your fitness resolutions for the new year? Whatโ€™s something that you did well in 2014 that youโ€™d like to repeat? Iโ€™d love to hear your fitness successes, too.

xoxo

Such great goals! I’ve been loving CrossFit this past year so I want to keep getting better and improving my overall fitness and strength! I’d love to be able to string my double under (I can get 1 every once and awhile now) and consistently get my handstand (without a wall) and get to being able to do a handstand pushup and walk! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on December 29, 2014 at 6:40 am

Double unders are going to be the death of me! I want to string them together so badly, but I just end up whipping myself!

  3. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on December 29, 2014 at 5:01 am

I love these Gina!! I also cracked a barrier in my half marathon this past year and set a new PR, so I can share in that celebration with you too. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just posted my 2015 vision board today (http://eat-spin-run-repeat.com/2014/12/29/2015-a-fresh-start/) and my biggest fitness goal is going to be to complete my first half Ironman triathlon. I’d also like to volunteer at some other races in order to give back to all of those awesome people that have made the ones I’ve competed in possible. I’m excited to follow your progress with all of these goals you’ve listed (and exciting news that there just might be a baby #2 on the way!)

    • Fitnessista on December 29, 2014 at 7:49 am

i love your idea to volunteer at more races. would love to get into that! ๐Ÿ™‚
will check out your vision board now!

Wow what an exciting year ahead for you! You look in amazing shape in that first pic on the SUP! Well every pic! I haven’t completely figured out my goals yet, but I definitely want to step it up fitness wise as I have taken it slow after having a baby. Sleep has been a huge priority haha

  5. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on December 29, 2014 at 5:21 am

Aww a new baby would be so amazing for 2015!! Good luck to you on that goal!

  6. Erin on December 29, 2014 at 5:23 am

Good luck with your fitness goals, Gina! My fitness goals are to add another half marathon to my list, a 10k in DC, and add more green juices/teas to my day!

  7. Renee @ Bendiful Blog on December 29, 2014 at 5:23 am

Great realistic and achievable goals! I need to work more on sprints as well as find a schedule for Yoga practice, it might mean jumping from gym to gym but I can do that! Good luck on the Baby in 2015!

  8. Shaina Anderson on December 29, 2014 at 5:29 am

Awesome goals! I was pretty happy with the fact that through trying various workouts, I found what my body responds the best to (a combo of weights and yoga with some running thrown in for sanity). That and becoming a little more diligent with my nutrition got me back to pre-baby body in less than four months, which I was STOKED about and never ever planned on.

My biggest goal for 2015 is to actually work out through the first trimester with #3 (ah!!) – something that definitely didn’t happen with the first two. (no I’m not pregnant but we’re talking about the fall. Belly buddies?! haha) I’ve got workouts planning up through July so my goal is to just stick to my plan, and as long as I stay diligent with properly fueling my body, I should be in the best shape I’ve ever been in come time to get pregnant again.

    • Fitnessista on December 29, 2014 at 7:49 am

#3! that is so awesome ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine on December 29, 2014 at 5:43 am

Awesome! I want to keep pushing myself in all my areas of fitness: yoga, weights, and now running too!
Taking fun new classes like Flamenco dancing! That is so awesome!

Great resolutions, particularly staying fit if you get pregnant again! For me, it’s taking my fitness to the next level. I’m in a good place, but I think I could really kick it up a notch and see where I can take my tone and muscle gains. Why not? Happy 2015!!!

Thanks for sharing! I know so many bloggers try to keep it under wraps if/when they’re trying but I think it’s really cool that you’re being more open about your hopes and plans! Really makes it feel like I “know” you more than just through the internet : )

My only New Years resolution is to go to the spa more in general and spend more time in the sauna in particular. My skin, stress level, and general mental acuity live it, and I have no idea why I don’t go more often.

  18. ashley on December 29, 2014 at 6:53 am

OUTDOOR sprints 1-2x a week! One of my fave spots in the area: Narragansett Ave between Ebers St and Froude–I do that 5-10x times: sprint to the top, walk/jog back to the bottom and right back up. Hurts so good.

  21. Traci on December 29, 2014 at 7:21 am

Stay consistent is a really good one. I might have to steal that from you. Although, I am not doing official resolutions this year!

  22. Alex @ get big, go to work on December 29, 2014 at 7:28 am

If you are looking for a good pair of running shoes, I really like pureflow by Brooks! I found them a few years ago and they are all I wear now. They are super light and comfy and in my opinion, the best running shoe for a road race! My 2014 fitness successes include getting stronger in the weight room. I focused on form and with them came nice strength gains. In 2015, I would like to focus more of fitness variety. Since I workout before work, I tend to get in a rut and stick to the same exercises, etc. since it is so early. I wish we had classes like OrangeTheory and stuff around here, but we don’t! My goal is to try some new classes in the new year though and keep myself from plateauing!

  23. Kara H. on December 29, 2014 at 7:50 am

Your paddle boarding goal is great! I want to give that a try when I visit California in Feb. also, you looked so cute 40 weeks pregnant! I don’t think I allowed one photo of myself with my first baby after 20 weeks. Haha

I’m pregnant with baby #2 due in May and my main goals are to stay active during pregnancy, develop a exercise routine post pregnancy (I’ve heard it gets difficult with two), and to become a barre instructor at the end of the year!

  24. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on December 29, 2014 at 8:18 am

My goal this year is to recover from injury, strengthen muscle imbalances (my new therapist at Mayo Clinic is amazing) and get back to my previous fitness level. I still want to continue swimming and I also want to continue giving my body rest as I begin working out more. Also sticking to eating whole foods consistently. I’ve done a good job the last few months, but I did lapse on Christmas cookies.

  25. April on December 29, 2014 at 8:41 am

My goal is to get back into running and train for a fall half marathon after having to take a year off from running (gosh, I miss it!). I love your personal fitness goals because they’re very realistic and strike a good balance.

Yay for a possible baby #2! Sending prayers your way ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on December 29, 2014 at 9:00 am

Hear hear on the no injuries! I just found out I sprained / broke my tailbone. ๐Ÿ™ It’s so painful!

  27. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on December 29, 2014 at 9:08 am

Hi Gina! My goals are actually quite similar to yours, outside of the half marathon. I definitely want to keep lifting weights and get stronger, while adding in more yoga. I’ve been doing one yoga session a week and would LOVE to jump that up to too. Ohhhh can’t wait to hear about a possible baby number two for you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Cindy on December 29, 2014 at 9:58 am

I am also hoping to get pregnant with baby #2 this year. This time I hope to stay more active and not eat all food within my reach. Baby weight is a real pain in the behind to get rid of!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  29. Tracy on December 29, 2014 at 10:39 am

I plan to stay consistent with my yoga practice of 4-5 times a week. I’d also looooove to do yoga teacher training if my schedule will allow it!!

Yay for babies! Prayers and blessings to you!

  30. Sarah on December 29, 2014 at 11:04 am

Yay for baby number 2 that would be SO exciting for your family!!
These are great goals! I always would love to fit in more yoga. I feel so great during it and once it’s over, but it’s just dragging myself to a class when I have a million other things to do that I struggle with.

  31. Maggie on December 29, 2014 at 11:42 am

I’m with you on the consistent yoga, injury prevention, and beating my half-marathon PR (2:05). Hopefully, incorporating more sprints will do the trick. Best of luck with accomplishing your goals!

  32. Crystal on December 29, 2014 at 12:11 pm

One of my resolutions is to stop talking about wanting to do things, and just DO THEM, even if it’s something small. Like saving up for another big vacation, remodeling our guest bathroom, or training for another half marathon (I’ve only done one!). I feel like I’m always putting things off, and meanwhile life is flying by! Also, right there with you on doing more yoga, even if it’s only 10 minutes in the morning ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. Kate @KateMovingForward on December 29, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Love that your goals are so varied and attainable! I too, am very guilty of getting stuck in my favorite weight training exercises and not pushing myself there. I’m looking forward to incorporating lots of great things from your new book! ๐Ÿ˜€

  34. Jessie on December 29, 2014 at 12:59 pm

I need to change up my fitness routine more consistently. I have been doing better with incorporating new things, but I do need to increase the weight during my strength training days. I’ll be ordering your book and hopefully getting more ideas to avoid hitting a platae as well!

Good luck with baby #2!! My son is just a little older than Liv and we’re discussing trying for baby #2 as well! Glad you had a nice christmas back home! We didnt make it back hm for xmas this yr, but we are blessed to have some of my husband’s family pretty close to us. Have a great upcoming new year!!

  35. Lizzie @ The Magic Tree on December 29, 2014 at 1:30 pm

I really fell in love with yoga this past year and I’d like to increase my practice to 3x week in 2015. I also want to fit in a consistent strength training routine and maybe start lifting heavier weights (the horror! ;))

  36. Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes on December 29, 2014 at 2:41 pm

Those are really good goals! One of my goals for next year is to make more time for yoga and continue to add variety to my workouts also!

  37. Sara Crandall @ Lake Shore Runner on December 29, 2014 at 2:51 pm

These are great goals! I would like to implement more yoga into my weekly routine to help prevent injury from running so much ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Kate @ SoCal Runner Gal on December 29, 2014 at 4:27 pm

Gosh, you are the cutest when preggo!

I have so many similar fitness goals and I am with you on the yoga – it’s so great, I love it, I need it and I suck at making time for it with all of the other fitness in my life.

I have a question: You’ve said before how the biggest game changer for you has been HIIT and that you used to be obsessed with long cardio sessions and realized that spending hours on the treadmill is totally unnecessary etc. I am wondering if physically your body looks/feels different now that you do HIIT regularly as opposed to straight cardio all the time? If so, do you have photos from your cardio days that you can compare to your HIIT days? Your body is so fit and perfect now and I’m curious how you felt/looked pre-HIIT. That’s all. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on December 29, 2014 at 10:17 pm

you are the sweetest ever. i can send you pics if you want! i have some pre-hiit photos that definitely show the difference, but i’m not sure i would put them on the blog haha

  39. Alexandra on December 29, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Great goals! My main goal is to stay active thru the end of this pregnancy- I’m 23 weeks in and so far so good! I’ve been going back thru your old pregnancy related fitness posts and finding great modifications and ideas so thank you!!

  40. Lizz on December 29, 2014 at 5:06 pm

If you’re looking for great sneakers or insoles you should definitely take a trip out to RoadRunner. They have “Shoe Dog” system that analyzes your running and they mould insoles to your feet. They have a really great return policy and sales on old stock or gently used shoes, so if you have a pair or style you love you can get last year’s model extra cheap.
And if you’re looking for flamenco inspiration you should visit Cafe Sevilla downtown, they have shows during dinner a few times a week.

I do Orange theory as well and love it! Just curious, what do you usually set your base, push, and all out pace as? And how often do you try to up it?

    • Fitnessista on December 29, 2014 at 10:13 pm

i’ve only upped it a couple of times since i started. my current paces are 6.3 base pace, 7.5 push pace, and 9-10 for all out (depending on how long we have to hold it!)

Just had my kiddo #2 in August, good luck! It’s definitely more work with two, but it’s also amazing.

I’m setting a very specific goal for myself in 2015. I have decided that I’m going to pass the physical exam that firefighter candidates have to pass, it’s called CPAT (http://www.cffjac.org/go/jac/cpat/). I am starting from zero, really, ZERO, so it will be a long year, but I have a lot of support from friends and family, and a lot of motivation stored up to get this accomplished. One of my first steps towards this goal was pre-ordering your HIIT book, perfect timing, thanks for that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hi Gina!

When researching fitness and health, I came across this post and I was reading about your knee injury and keeping your knees happy. I think our shoes would be perfect for you! I wanted to offer you a free pair of Carrera Fitness Trainers. Our Carrera shoe has our awesome, supportive technology that includes an orthotic built into the midsole and a good arch support. The EVA midsole foam is shock absorbing, which would help with your knee pain. Shoes that do not provide adequate insole support can cause problems with the arch of the foot, causing your body to fall out of alignment, which results in more pressure and impact on the knee.
Please email me back at lindsey@kurufootwear.com if you are interested.

    Hey Gina-

Awesome post! Thanks for the inspiration.

My goal this year is to start. I’ve always been petite and (though I have always filled out my figure) never worried about my body, but as I’ve grown into my mid-20’s I’m realizing the importance of keeping my body healthy and active. So this year, my goal is to start working out! I’m not entirely sure what this looks like yet, but I’m excited! Thank you, again, for the inspiration and for being a great role model!

    • Fitnessista on January 2, 2015 at 9:55 pm

that is an awesome goal! sending lots of love to you and cheering for you along the way <3
