Practice 10k + a giveaway- ENDED

Practice 10k COMPLETE!

Sabino run with liv

(not pushing the jogging stroller, though. The Pilot walked with Liv since he has a PT test tomorrow and wanted to have fresh legs)

I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to do it, but my killer playlist got me through. Even with the steep Sabino incline and a walk break in the middle (and in the snow.. with 40 lbs of sand on my back.. haha), I managed to hit a post-baby PDR and finished the practice 10k in 58 minutes.

I really wanted my practice 10k to be at Sabino because of the incline. If I can bust an hour on this, then I can definitely do it for the race.  I’m fortunate to have a baby who loves the jogging stroller, weather that’s getting much cooler, and many safe, beautiful places to run in Tucson. I feel like I have the Sabino main trail memorized because I’ve ran it so many times, but every time we go, I see something different. I’ll never take the beauty of Sabino Canyon for granted, and with all of the recent summer monsoons, everything is lush and green instead of brown and dried out.

Sabino

I’ve been running with my new Garmin Forerunner 10, that the company kindly sent me to try out. I instantly noticed how LIGHT and small the new Forerunner is. It’s so much more compact than my 305 that I’d been using, which kind of looks like I can press a button and blast off, or like I have a small video game system attached to my wrist. The new Forerunner just looks like a small sporty watch, with all of the necessary functions for walking and jogging: satellite detection so it can tell you your pace and distance (even cheers you on when you set a new record!), estimate of calories burned, easy to pause and restart.

Here’s a video of the new Forerunner, which gives and idea of how user-friendly and small it is:

the fact that it comes in pink is a bonus, too 😉

Garmin

I ran with my Forerunner as I have been, and loved the fact that I could quickly glance down and see how I was doing.

I knew I had to make it a little past 3 miles into the canyon, and the miles are clearly marked on large boulders. Every rock I saw in the distance, I would PRAY that it would say mile three and was discouraged quite a few times.

Finally.

3 mile mark

I walked for a few minutes and flew back down -why is the way back so much easier?!

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve wondered if I’d be able to run the half marathon, despite my training time constraints. Every run solidifies the fact that I’d be mad at myself if I did it. I’d rather do the 10k and feel good about it, instead of be crawling across the half marathon finish line or picked up by the “slow truck.”

How’s that humble pie taste? Kinda like macaroon dough….

Roon dough 4

I made a batch to send to a reader as a thank-you gift, and wanted to share some with a lucky giveaway winner, too.

Roons

Garmin was so kind to offer a new Forerunner 10 -just released last week- to a lucky Fitnessista reader, and I’ll also send some chocolate macaroons.

**************This giveaway has ended! Thank you so much to everyone for entering, and congratulations to the winner:

Lauren, the Forerunner and macaroons winner:

Ever since I started running races, my dad has been at every single one, no matter the weather or how it might inconvenience him. But every mile matters to me because my dad has stage 4 cancer, meaning he won’t go into remission. He probably won’t be there to walk me down the aisle. But when I run, whether it’s a tough hill on a training run or when I feel like giving up in a race, I think of him and know that no matter how much pain he’s in, he never complains, so there’s no reason for me to, either. I’m running my third half marathon in a month and every mile will be for him.

And also congratulations to the second and third place winners, who will receive these awesome Garmin water bottles:

Amy

Every mile matters to me because…

It means that I am healthy and that I can set an example for both girls and women in my community. A runner does not have to look a certain way, and in fact runners do not all fit that “runner” stereotype. I love racing because I get to continually challenge my own stereotypes about people and LOVE when an older woman passes me by.

Also, I run so I can set an example for my students-create a goal and really go after it, learn to persevere. They know me as the running teacher.

and

Vera

I have to be honest and say that since I have had my children ( Aria, 4 years and Jax, 7 months), I haven’t been into running very much. I always feel like it is too time consuming, and so I usually find myself doing a quick Zuzana workout, or another quick DVD I have at home that I can do in the evening once the kids are in bed. But lately, and especially since the weather is beginning to cool down, I would really love to get back into it. And I would love to show my daughter that being healthy and enjoying the outdoors are very important and enjoyable :)

ps – Gina, I LOVE your blog. I am hooked.

Please send me your shipping info so I can forward it to the Garmin fairy 🙂

Thank you again so much for the awesome entries! Stay tuned for more giveaways in the very near future.

xoxo

Each mile counts because I remember how hard it was to get that mile! Running doesn’t come easily for me either, and so even if I can make it one more block, or past one more tree, I feel really proud and know I can do it again. It’s all a mental game really! Thanks Gina.

Every mile matters to me because every single week I have 678 faces looking at me for motivation, excitement and to learn about the love of exercise. As you can probably guess I am an elementary PE teacher. The kids know I enjoy running but they have no idea how many miles they have pushed me to do my best. Every mile that I push myself I am thinking of all 678 faces that I see twice a week and how I am always asking them to try their best so it’s only fitting that when I run I always try to push myself. The kids love to try to beat my times and distances. Running is by far the best stress relief for me 🙂

  3. Claire on September 11, 2012 at 5:49 pm

I took up running as a new challenge and a way to deal with the stress of graduate school. I find that each mile matters to me because it helps my mood; I always feel terrific after a run, even a bad run!

  4. Amanda on September 11, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Every mile matters to me because it’s one mile closer to reaching my goal!

  5. Jane on September 11, 2012 at 5:58 pm

Every mile matters to me because I too am a military spouse. Each mile helps me stay positive when my husband is away and to feel proud of my individual accomplishments. I run to give myself my own identity that isn’t just that of “army wife” because although I am proud to be one, I am so much more than that. Running will never be easy for me, but it reminds me that even if life isn’t always easy, it is always worth trying.

  6. AnneW on September 11, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Each mile counts because each mile is a gift. Whether biking, running, hiking, or walking, I give thanks to God for the ability to move, living in a safe place to explore, and having the health to continue!

  7. Molly on September 11, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Every mile helps me learn to take care of myself so I am able for my students and family.

  8. Larissa on September 11, 2012 at 6:00 pm

every mile matters to me because i am not a very good runner and do not usually run a lot of miles. Every time I check off a mile i feel proud of myself for making it that far!

  9. Stacy on September 11, 2012 at 6:01 pm

    Thanks for the giveaway!

Every mile matters to me because the more I run and stay dedicated to weekly sessions, the stronger and more capable I feel about my fitness and my life. I never thought I would be someone who could run 3 miles without getting out of breath and after “becoming a runner” last year (consistently running a few times a week) I’m still shocked when I get up to 4, 5 or even 6 miles in a session. Sticking with it and very slowly increasing my mileage has taught me that I can do anything if I just stay diligent, patient and work hard.

Running has also transformed from a calorie burning exercise into a way for me to enjoy the day and my life. Lately I’ve been feeling really grateful that I’m able to build up the body strength for a great run and enjoy the moment, running with my dog on the beach.

I used to live in Tucson, it is a beautiful place to live! Sounds like you are enjoying it. If y’all get the chance check out Picacho Peak. It’s a great day hike!

I’m so excited about this giveaway – I really want one of these!

I started running the day my boyfriend was deployed to Afghanistan, just over 5 months ago. The day he deployed was naturally very emotional and once I got home from dropping him off at barracks all I wanted to do was put on my running shoes, stick my ipod on shuffle and run – even though previously this had always seemed like my worst nightmare! On that run I made the decision that while he was away I’d set myself a challenge, primarily to distract myself and really to just give me something to do, and so by the time he returned I wanted to be a runner who didn’t even bat an eyelid at 10K. Every day since then I have focused on meeting this goal. Every mile I run reminds me that I am able to challenge myself and try things that might scare or intimidate me and now I can’t imagine not running; but every mile (or kilometer!) really matters because it’s one mile closer to him being home 🙂

  11. ashley on September 11, 2012 at 6:09 pm

Running is a huge challenge for me so every mile and step counts! I may not be impressive but I get my butt moving!

  12. Lindsey F. on September 11, 2012 at 6:09 pm

“Every mile matters to me because each step we take and accomplishment we overcome leads us to our next obstacle to push past”

  13. Lola on September 11, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Every mile is a blessing that I am able to run, push myself, and set new goals by having a strong healthy body. Every mile also gives me time to let me be in tune with myself. Then every mile matters because it means a little closer to another pair of running shoes…

Oh yeah… The more miles, the more of the rush you feel when you are done! 😉

  14. Amanda on September 11, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Every mile matters to me because it provides a sense of satisfaction and pride that I’m able to set a goal and complete it. It also gives me the chance to take mental break from the stressors of every day life!

  15. Ali on September 11, 2012 at 6:13 pm

1 year ago I was unable to run after a little accident I had. After having major hip surgery in March (while trying to balance another year of my PhD program) it has truly been a struggle every day for me to get back my body and my life. Every SINGLE mile I run now (slowly of course-I’m still healing!) matters to me as I think about how grateful I am to be healthy and able to move freely and pain free. My injury and surgery changed the person that I am and I really don’t think I’ll ever take being healthy for granted again.

  16. Natalie Rae on September 11, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Every mile counts for me because it shows me I can once again be fit after baby!

  17. Marie G on September 11, 2012 at 6:17 pm

Each mile counts because not only does it get you one step closer to your goal but to me it is a metaphor for life. We all have goals and we have to keep putting one front in front of the other to reach it. Each mile represents a journey that no matter how long it took you to get there your enjoying the experience along the way. The excitement, the passion you have, and the struggles it takes to get to the end!

  18. Brittany on September 11, 2012 at 6:21 pm

Every mile matters to me because it empowers me in several aspects of my life. Running has never come easily to me, so as I continue to add miles to my distance, it encourages me that if I can accomplish that, I can accomplish anything.

  19. Taylor Hughes on September 11, 2012 at 6:22 pm

Every mile counts because that means im that much further away from how I used to feel about myself with negative thoughts and my eating disorder… And that means one mile closer to the love I can finally accept.

  20. Maggie on September 11, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Every mile matters because every mile, every step, gets you closer to your goal, whatever that is. My friends and I started running to train for a Tough Mudder race that took place this past weekend. Though we’re all gymrats, many of us don’t actually get outside and RUN that often. So we started slow, a few months ago, and worked our way up to tackling – and eventually conquering – long runs and killer hills. Our race was unfortunately canceled last weekend (BIGGEST BUMMER EVER), but my team met anyway and ran through our disappointment – literally – together. I even found a pile of dirt to run through, ha. We’re going to keep training until the next race in the area – seven months away! Every mile gets us closer to our goal of finally having the opportunity to conquer the Tough Mudder!

  21. Taylor on September 11, 2012 at 6:27 pm

After an injury several years ago I was told I would never be able to run again. I have now recovered and I am able to run and it makes me so thankful for every mile I can run. I remind myself on the days I am not motivated to run or exercise how grateful I should be to be able to run. Love your blog!!!

  22. Alexandria on September 11, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Each mile counts to me because it is a step closer to my ultimate running goal.

  23. katherine w. on September 11, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Every mile matters to me because each time I run (or walk!) it’s a tangible accomplishment. Not only that, but my time on the sidewalk creates a space where I can relax, enjoy the scenery, wave to the neighbors, and be thankful for a body that can move freely.
For me, every mile counts even more this year: I’ve been tallying them up on a notepad since January 1 and I can’t wait to count the grand total at the end of the year and see what I’ve achieved in a year’s worth of “just getting out there.”

  24. Ellen on September 11, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Every mile matters to me because it is time that I take for my health, both physical and mental. It’s my “me” time where I can think, reflect, and set new goals.

  25. Maria on September 11, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Every minute matters to me because you never know when it will be your last.

  26. Andrea on September 11, 2012 at 6:42 pm

Every mile matters because it means that I have two legs capable of running. With friends who have passed on from MS & ALS, running and being active is a way to honor their memory.

And because I’m lazy and don’t want to click on your other post, I make oat bran pancakes with frozen organic blueberries from TJs a lot for Bronwen. I just google a recipe before I begin and never seem to make the same one twice. I do look for one that uses yogurt so that I can get in some extra fat and probiotics for her. I don’t give her much dairy (especially when she was on milk-based formula before 1 year) but she does well with yogurt. And flax eggs instead of real ones if you’re avoiding egg whites.

  27. Miri on September 11, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Every mile counts because it proves that my body is able to do more than I ever thought possible. I’ve struggled with my body image from a very young age. The struggle has included binge eating, excessive dieting, and horribly negative self-talk. I started running last year and have started to see the changes in my body and my perception of it. Every mile is proof that my body is beautiful and healthy even when I’m not at the weight I want to be. Every mile is proof that God didn’t make a mistake when He gave me big hips and a large frame. Every mile is proof that my body is capable of more than just looking good in an outfit. Running is hard… but the feeling of accomplishment you get after you finish a run is indescribable.

  28. Niki on September 11, 2012 at 6:50 pm

Every mile counts because I remember how I couldn’t run for a year due to injury and how sad it made me to not be able to get out there and pound the pavement!! Right now every mile counts because I am making a healthy, injury free running comeback and am training for 2 half marathons this fall!!!

  29. Liz on September 11, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Every mile matters to me because of my son! He’s the same age as precious little Livi, and I want to set a good example for him.

  30. mi-an d. on September 11, 2012 at 7:02 pm

i have my first half marathon on oct. 7! and each mile means to me that my body is stronger than i thought!! and i’m so proud of each mile that it accomplishes!!

  31. Erin on September 11, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Every mile counts because each mile gives me strength and gives me health (physically and mentally). It makes me get out of bed every morning and be thankful for every mile I can run. Every mile, whether one or 26.2, is important to me and running allows me to continue to set new goals and challenge myself.

  32. Rachael on September 11, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Every mile matters to me because I am not a natural runner, but it is something that makes me feel so accomplished when I do complete a good run!

  33. stacey on September 11, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Every mile matters to me because I am able to leave everything behind for however long, and come back with a clear head and great attitude. It would also be totally awesome to finally have a watch to keep track of all those miles and motivate me to make even more time to run! (and who doesn’t love chocolate macaroons after a long run :))

  34. Anastasi on September 11, 2012 at 7:13 pm

I just started running and seeing my endurance slowly build has been a huge confidence booster, every mile really does count! Would love to try out the new Garmin as I increase mileage 🙂 and then snack on some ‘roons after !

  35. Megan on September 11, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Every mile matters to me because even after shedding 60 lbs over 7 years ago, I still need to keep myself focuses on living a healthy lifestyle that doesn’t always come naturally. Also, every mile will make my running/walking companion, my dog Emma, a little more tired, which is no easy feat! She has boundless energy.

  36. karen on September 11, 2012 at 7:18 pm

every mile counts because at the end of my run, i could have my dessert and not feel guilty about it.

  37. Tiffany on September 11, 2012 at 7:18 pm

every mile matters to me because it brings me one step closer to my goals and weight loss. a few years ago, i had the endurance to workout for hours, yet now I’m far from it. I want to keep pushing myself to get back to where i was physically and emotionally and I know that with each workout it’ll get easier and easier!

  38. Natalie on September 11, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Every mile matters to me to be healthy for my son and to be the best me I can be. Running is my form of therapy. Mental illnesses run in my family, and running provides the best relief for the anxiety and sometimes yuck thoughts that can creep into my head. It’s my medicine!

  39. Morgan on September 11, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Every mile matters to me because becoming a runner did not come easily. I started slow and short- and then added miles from there. I never thought i’d be able to run a half marathon and I did this past April without stopping once (only for water, of course!) To me, when I tell myself I can go the extra mile is like telling myself I know I have it in to me better myself and push myself! Every mile is a new accomplishment, even if its 3 miles one day or 10 the next. That’s how I finished my first half marathon without stopping in 2 hours and 18 minutes!

  40. Lindsey on September 11, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Every mile counts for me because I can be extremely motivated, yet lazy. Running only a couple of miles is a great conquest for me. I hope to run a half marathon one day!

  41. Jenny on September 11, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Every mile matters to me because it reminds me that I am healthy enough to do something that not everyone is fortunate enough to do. Running gives me so much more than just a good workout. It’s free therapy, time to myself, always puts me in the best mood, and gives me a huge sense of accomplishment with every mile!

  42. Sarah on September 11, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I cannot run because I have a form of arthritis and running was exacerbating too many of my symptoms. I used to be a runner and triathlete, and it took me several years to get over losing running. It felt horrible to lose an activity that brought me so much joy, challenge, and personal satisfaction. However, I have discovered that I LOVE Zumba. It doesn’t aggravate my arthritis and the class gives me that same “high” that running did. It feels like I’m taking time for myself and reminding myself that I don’t have to be perfect at EVERYTHING, as there are some things that are just made for us to enjoy. During Zumba, I can think through my issues or simply focus 100% on trying to get the dance pattern right–whatever I need. I love looking around and seeing all the women in my class enjoying life and their bodies. I also love walking and the elliptical machine. Every mile that I log walking, Zumba, or ellipticalling (is that a word?) reminds me that I MATTER and that taking time for myself is important. It also reminds me that joy is a choice!

  43. Claire on September 11, 2012 at 7:28 pm

My mom has always been my fitness (and everything else) inspiration. She set a really good example for me growing up about the value of exercise and pushing yourself to accomplish goals. A few years ago she was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease (just a few weeks after completing an olympic distance triathlon). Since she isn’t physically able to do the things she used to, I try to push myself and reach new fitness goals in her honor. Every mile matters because my mom taught me that hard work pays off and exercise is vital to a healthy, balanced life.

  44. Kevie on September 11, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Running keeps me sane. Period. I do my best thinking on my runs. I get so excited to get up and run, and I’m so thankful that I am able! I was injured awhile back, and I went nuts…so that’s while every mile matters!!!

  45. Lisa on September 11, 2012 at 7:32 pm

Every mile matters to me because running is so difficult for me now. I began running in last year, my freshman year of college. I instantly fell in love with the sport, and I began to run daily. I eventually decided to run my first race: a half marathon sponsored by a university my best friend attends. It was a crazy goal, but I was determined to do it. I downloaded a half marathon training plan on my phone, but I realized I liked going above my recommended mileage. I didn’t care that I was essentially overtraining; I was hooked. By the time my half came around, I was barely to jog without pain shooting down my legs. My doctor diagnosed me with bursitis in both hips and advised me not to run fast or for long periods of time. Being the stubborn girl I am, I ran my half anyway. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but I finished it. Since then, I have been unable to run more than 2-3 miles at a time. Running is my outlet; it relieves so much stress that college brings, and I honestly couldn’t imagine my life without it. I love the sport, but I’m limited to single digit miles on account of my injury and the likelihood that it could reoccur. Since my diagnosis, I have become more involved in shorter races; 5ks can still be just as fun as the longer marathons. I would absolutely love this watch. I can’t promise it will show numbers above a 3-4 mile distance, but each number will still be important to me. 🙂

  46. Anne on September 11, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Every mile matters to me becuase I realize how LUCKY I am to be able to run and spend at least a little time outdoors every day despite my office job.

  47. Angela on September 11, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Every mile matters to me because with each step I take I know that I am strong and full of worth. The hurt of the past is behind me and I am moving in the right direction. Running lets me feel that freedom and peace.

  48. Amanda on September 11, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Every mile reminds me how far I’ve come since losing 75 pounds. It reminds me how much better I feel physically, emotionally and spiritually. Every run I complete keeps me on check. It soothes my soul when I’m stressed out. My husband can tell when I haven’t run for awhile. 🙂

I had hoped to run a half marathon in October, but an absolutely awful case of poison ivy through my training off. I hope to run another 5k in a few weeks and train for a half marathon in the spring.

  49. Tania Neater on September 11, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Hi. Every mile matters to me because I matter and I have come a long way. I am a 31year old mother of a 16 year old beautiful, smart, funny, sweet…I could of course go on and one. The road hasn’t been easy and I was not an athlete in high school. But after defeating drugs, alcohol and a rollercoaster life I am a successful massage therapist at our local YMCA, domestic-diva, baking goddess, yoga lover, mother, wife and lover of many things.
Every mile matters to me when I get to run it along side my daughter or husband or just my little precious multi-poo.
Every mile matters even if it is a half-mile kind of day or a day when I finish 4 huffing and puffing.
Every mile matters especially because I recently ran with 2 “crazy-runner-chics” from my gym and was able to run the whole run with them while carrying on conversation. WOW did I feel great! The elated feeling from that day was proof that I am worth the time out of the day and if I give my body what it needs it will cooperate.

Thanks for all that you do.

  50. Abby on September 11, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Every mile matters means that even the small things count. Although I enjoy running (er– most days), my short little legs will probably never get me past a 10k. Some days I can only squeeze in or make it through a few miles. But every mile you are active, whether walking or running, builds into to a healthy lifestyle.
