Scrambled Brain

Hi friends. Hope you had a great day! <3 LOVED reading your random comments this morning. Yaโ€™ll always make me smile ๐Ÿ˜‰

So my brain is fried.

It was a long, hectic, and incredible day, but my throat is killing me and I kind of just need to sit in silence for a second. Iโ€™ll be back in the morning and in the meantime, here are some pictures of Bellaโ€™s new haircut!

Enjoy your night and Iโ€™ll see ya in the morning with a Facebook fan macaroon giveaway winner ๐Ÿ˜€

Something to talk about: Home sore throat remedies! Please donโ€™t say neti pot. My brain is already fried and Iโ€™m afraid to drown it on top of that ๐Ÿ˜‰

    teaspoon of raw honey!

  2. Daisy on May 12, 2011 at 9:38 pm

Yogi Throat Comfort tea. My public-speaking relatives SWEAR by it so I gave it a go…and it was wonderful. You can get it at Whole Foods!

  3. Emily on May 12, 2011 at 9:40 pm

It’s pretty common, but a spoonful of honey washed down with a mug of hot water and lemon juice works WONDERS. When I’m rehearsing for musicals I swear by it.

If it’s a might-be-getting-sick sore throat, take some raw garlic cloves and place them in the back of your teeth. Chomp down and inhale deeply several times. Anti-microbial!

My grandmother always told me to gargle with salt water. I take one cup of hot water and dissolve 1 – 2 tsp. of salt in it and then gargle. Helps to sooth the pain.

  5. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 12, 2011 at 9:40 pm

bella looks so soft and fluffy! she looks great
i hope i win, but too bad i couldn’t make tiny text saying that too lol
I’m scared of the neti pot too, I have a fear of drowning so i dont think i could do it. I have enough troubles tilting my head back in the shower when I wash my hair.. (loser alert, i know)

  6. Danielle (Shrinking and Studying) on May 12, 2011 at 9:40 pm

My grandma always made me “hot lemonade.” Juice half a lemon pour it into a tea cup, add a couple teaspoons of raw honey and pour hot water over it. It also tastes pretty good ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Laura J. on May 12, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Hot chamomile tea or if you want it to feel better quick- throat spray. I know there’s nothing homemade/natural about it, but it definitely gets the job done ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Dani on May 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Sorbet! To me cold is wayyyy more soothing than hot.

  9. Amber L on May 12, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I hate taking medicine, but ibuprofen always works wonders for a sore throat. Other than that, I definitely think gargling warm salt water helps- even though it makes me wanna gag thinking about it!

    • Amber L on May 12, 2011 at 9:42 pm

      oh and feel better soon!

  10. Brittney on May 12, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Isn’t it funny how many things we worry about that we shouldn’t have?

  11. Kim on May 12, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Bella looks so cute and the red bows are sassy! Hope your throat feels better! I agree with the salt water gargle! It is gross but really works!

  12. Carpensm @ A Life Without Ice Cream on May 12, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Use the blender to combine some ice, a little juice (ie oj) and a bit of frozen fruit… basically make a really liquidy smoothie cold and soothing.

BTW, thanks so much for answering my question today! very helpful! Thanks for being such an attentive blogger!

Bella’s haircut is awesome! Feel better soon ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve heard that shopping helps with sore throats. You should try it out. ASAP! ๐Ÿ™‚ Bella looks adorable – so fluffy and pretty! ๐Ÿ™‚ I feel the same way when I get my hair done. Well, not fluffy – but sassy and pretty ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Barbara on May 12, 2011 at 9:45 pm

bella looks so good!! love the sassy red bows and i just love the pics of her. i can’t get enough. a dear friend gave me a fluffy (kinda shaggy) stuffed animal and she’s been nameless for a year. i decided to name her bella (hehehe), hope you don’t mind. of course your bella will always be the O.B (original bella;-).

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2011 at 1:02 am

i told bella and she was so flattered

  16. alicia on May 12, 2011 at 9:46 pm

I had a sore throat right before a vacation!!!! I gargled with warm salt water and drank a tablespoon, or two, of honey every hour or so. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Maybe it’s from all the loud instruction giving with the new job?
Bella looks like a new pup! I wish I could put bows in my labs hair!!

  17. BIOCHEMISTA on May 12, 2011 at 9:49 pm

    Hope you feel better ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on May 12, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I would try the shot of whiskey and go to bed method ๐Ÿ™‚

Seriously girl, just up your probiotics, if you have kombucha or fermented foods, you need lots of healthy bacteria added right now to counterbalance whatever imbalance you have going on. Ginger, garlic, Vitamin C, water, sleep. And maybe a shot of bourbon, whiskey, or gran marnier. That was my grandma’s method ๐Ÿ™‚

    Feel better!

  19. BethT on May 12, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Corey swears by a shot of vinegar for a sore throat. It has the approval of many southern grannies!

  20. Lindsey on May 12, 2011 at 9:53 pm

bella is so fluffy! my favorite sore throat remedy is alternating gargling salt water (ew, but works) with cups of hot lemon water/honey. I boil cut lemons (skin on – buy organic) with a few cups of water for about 10 minutes, then sweeten to taste with honey and drink as hot as you can stand it.

  21. suzi on May 12, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Zinc spray or lozenges always help me.

That Bella is the cutest thing ever! I like her sassy but I also like her fluffed with her bows. let’s face it she’s a model no matter what look she’s sporting!

  22. cathy on May 12, 2011 at 9:58 pm

another vote for “gargle with salt water!” old family remedy – all natural and it works (but you’ll look really dorky and dribble on your chin!) – hope you feel better in the morning!

  23. Michele Williams on May 12, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Ok, I know it sounds crazy but it REALLY WORKS!!! Take water as hot as you can stand it, of course without burning yourself, and add 2 TBSP salt, and gargle away!! It’s like MAGIC!! I swear! Feel better soon!

  24. Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness) on May 12, 2011 at 10:06 pm

I got sick the last few days of a cruise and started drinking my friend’s 92 yr old grandpa’s cocktail of choice – a stinger! It was made with 2 shots of creme de menthe & 2 shots of brandy. Worked wonders. I generally think time is the only thing that really heals a sore throat, but damn that drink made my throat feel better!

Tell Bella I lurve her ‘do! ๐Ÿ˜€

  26. Meghan on May 12, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Stay away from cold drinks and foods. The cold temperature constricts your throat, causing more pain and soreness. Stick to warm water with ginger, lemon and honey, teas and more warm water. Do as little talking as possible. Hopefully this helps!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2011 at 1:01 am

no wonder it feels worse- i’ve been chugging iced sports drink all day

  27. Jess@atasteofconfidence on May 12, 2011 at 10:16 pm

    She looks so cute!

  28. Ilana on May 12, 2011 at 10:23 pm

Apple cider vinegar+grated ginger+honey in hot water

  29. Kate Z. on May 12, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Make a cup of tea by steeping fresh ginger slices in boiling water, then add lemon and honey if you like. And get some sleep!

  30. Ashley @ Feeding Ashley on May 12, 2011 at 10:30 pm

salt water, tea, honey, and lots of rest are the only things I can think of.
    Bella looks soooo cute!

  31. Jen G. on May 12, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Hot lemon water (if you’ve got a cold to boot) — I just slice up a lemon and put the slices in hot water to brew like a tea. If you’re mucus-y, it’ll help clarify. And I ditto the Yogi Throat Comfort tea. It feels lovely on the throat!

  32. Haleigh on May 12, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Bella’s new haircut is so cute! I usually drink a lot of warm tea when my throat hurts, it’s not really a remedy.. but it makes my throat feel better for a short period of time.

  33. Amy on May 12, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Your dog is SUCH a girl!! I read your blog everyday and I cannot get over how girlie Bella appears to be! It cracks me up! She’s looking sassy!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2011 at 12:43 am

      she knows it, too ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Laura on May 12, 2011 at 10:50 pm

Apple cider vinegar. It doesn’t taste great but the vinegar kills the bacteria in your throat. It works everytime. Just mix a spoonful with a cup of water and drink it. You’ll get used to the taste after a few drinks.

  35. Alicia on May 12, 2011 at 10:51 pm

So I have to comment on the neti pot. I was so afraid, like you, but this past week I have had the worst cold and being pregnant am limited in what I can take so I finally got enough courage to try the neti pot. I worried that it would be like when you’re swimming in the pool and you suck water in through your nose and it burns. It’s NOT at all! I’m still not sold on it and most of the time I’ve been too congested and it doesn’t work but I have yet to flood my brain or get that awful burning feeling. Everyone I talk to that has used it raves about it so I guess I’ll keep trying. HTH!

    • jen on May 13, 2011 at 10:37 am

you can get a squeeze bottle one so you won’t have to tilt your head. As long as you don’t breath in as your putting the water in your nose you won’t get the water burn, plus thats what the salt keeps you from having. you could not use just water needs the salt mix.
Alica if your really congested then you need to use it 3 or more times a day to get the mucas to loosen up. I love it but yes it was weird at 1st but it has worked better then anything for my hay fever and allergies.

  36. Allie on May 12, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Throat comfort tea, lots and lots of honey and steam. Lots of steam. Maybe turn on your shower, make it as hot as possible, close your bathroom door and turn your bathroom into a steam room. OR if you have a personal steamer, that works just as well (and is good for your pores). I’m a singer and this all works for me

Also, DO NOT WHISPER. That makes your throat worse!

  37. Holly @ The Runny Egg on May 12, 2011 at 10:54 pm

Bella’s legs look like pipe cleaners ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Doc (The Healthy PhD) on May 12, 2011 at 10:54 pm

I see everyone else has commented all the ideas I would’ve had, but I hope you feel better soon!

  39. Maren on May 12, 2011 at 10:57 pm

If it just started, take airborne. I swear by the stuff. I hope it doesn’t have lots of bad stuff in it. I don’t even read the label. I just know it has lots of vitamins and minerals in it and it always does the trick! I don’t get sore throats anymore, though, because I don’t have tonsils! Best decision of my life getting them out, but it was definitely the worst experience of my life!

  40. E on May 12, 2011 at 11:02 pm

I’ve been a singer for a LONG time, and I swear by the (rather nasty) concoction of EITHER tea or very hot water, with lots of lemon, apple cider vinegar (it’s gross but it works miracles, i swear to you), and, sometimes a dash of cayenne pepper. Usually piping hot agua, big squeeze of lemon, and apple cider vinegar will work. Crushes inflamation and soothes the throat like none other. It’ll also be like drain-o for your throat if you’re having mucus issues. IT WORKS, I SWEAR. try it.

    Feel better.

    • E on May 12, 2011 at 11:03 pm

also throw some honey in there if you’re feeling it. just make sure you dont skip out on the apple cider vinegar!

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2011 at 12:42 am

actually like the taste of apple cider vinegar, so i’ll totally roll w this one ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. kari on May 12, 2011 at 11:15 pm

    hope you feel better tomorrow!

  42. Kelly on May 12, 2011 at 11:21 pm

Rock and rye liquor with honey or rock candy…tried and true method of my grandfather who used to give it to me as a kid. I actually prefer to take the liquor in tea with some honey stirred in. Gargling with a strong liquor also helps kill the germs.

  43. Allie J on May 13, 2011 at 12:18 am

My mom always tells me to gargle with salt water & drink some Throat Coat tea when I have a sore throat. It always makes me feel better. Momma knows best! ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. ered on May 13, 2011 at 12:18 am

acupuncture, friend ๐Ÿ™‚ not a home remedy necessarily but you can def go in for it. We’re also excellent for expelling the ‘common cold’ and the sooner you go in when you feel it coming on, the better. Be well ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 13, 2011 at 12:42 am

awesome, i’ll book an appt tomorrow!

  45. Krystina (Organically Me) on May 13, 2011 at 12:23 am

Definitely a spoonful of raw honey and a nice warm mug of throat coat tea.

  46. Priyanka on May 13, 2011 at 12:45 am

Warm milk or almond milk with turmeric and ginger works like a charm in clearing sore throat. Give it a try, better if you drink it at night before going to bed.

  47. Laura on May 13, 2011 at 12:47 am

Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat with a squeeze of honey. Oh…and load up on the Vit C so it doesn’t evolve into anything else ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hope you feel better soon!

  48. Beth on May 13, 2011 at 1:00 am

I love Throat Coat, it’s the only way I managed to get thru strep throat a few months ago!

  49. caroline on May 13, 2011 at 2:55 am

Oooo poor thing! My throat is ALWAYS sore from teaching/training 24-7. Take a hot epsom salt bath and soak in the steam. Ginger tea or ginger works GREAT to help the sinuses/throat. Ibprofen if needed… but vocal rest is always the best! Feel better!

  50. Morgan @ OperationHotMama on May 13, 2011 at 4:16 am

I love honey lozenges and hot tea! Feel better soon!
