The Golden Tamater

Hi friends ๐Ÿ˜€ How are ya? Things are bueno over here ๐Ÿ˜€

Have you ever seen a golden tomato?

I hadnโ€™t, either.. until this one caught my eye at Whole Foods.

tomato

It was $6.

For a tomato.

My food splurge of the weekโ€ฆ I couldnโ€™t turn it down, it was so beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚

I did it up right by chopping the golden tomato into some Caprese-style salad.

caprese

1 beautiful heirloom tomato

-1 serving goat gouda

-fresh organic basil

Garlic Gold crunchies

-Fig vinegar

Sea salt and pepper

+ some kamut bread a la paper towel (and a little bread nub that I chiseled off โ€œfell offโ€ when I was cutting a slice)

bread

More snackage:

smoothie

-1 C almond milk

-1 scoop Sun Warrior

-1/2 banana

-1 T raw cacao powder

-cinnamon

Look what came in the mail!

abs

I was so excited to open the package and see Shaun T.โ€™s sculpted abs staring at me.

Thank you so much to Michelle for sending these my way! I canโ€™t wait to try them out <3

I havenโ€™t been as productive as possible today.. but I did order two dresses for Healthy Living Summit weekend from Rent The Runway.

Iโ€™ve had my heart set on a certain dress for the past 2 weeks and the pilot said to go for itโ€ฆ he didnโ€™t need to twist my arm with that one ๐Ÿ˜‰

Off to work!

Tonight:

-Making Tres Leches for Saturday night

TURBOFIRE (still lovinโ€™ the fiyahh!)

xoxo,

Gina

  2. Michelle on July 22, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I paid $12 for a smallish yellow watermelon at Whole Foods. To this day it is the BEST watermelon I have ever eaten.

  3. RhodeyGirl on July 22, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I spent $15 on 3 tomatoes at the farm market the other day. They are definitely the best tomatoes I have ever had and worth every penny.

  4. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on July 22, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Holy cow. I buy some expensive food but I don’t think I’ve ever shelled out $6 for produce – at least 1 piece of produce. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m glad it was worth it!

  5. dotsie on July 22, 2010 at 5:18 pm

$6 for a tomato?! WOW! Haha! I hope it tasted as good as it looks!

I would like to get some of that in mail! Lucky girl!

  6. Kristina on July 22, 2010 at 5:19 pm

that tomato is beautiful, and hopefully delicious at that price! I love caprese…

I *SO WISH* I was going to HLS (tear)… I have a wedding to attend that weekend. Please campaign on my behalf to have HLS2011 in BEAUTIFUL Portland Oregon!! ๐Ÿ™‚

amazing vegan + rawr ๐Ÿ˜‰ food here!

I hope you show us your dresses, is where I started with the HLS that turned into a selfish rant ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Carrie on July 22, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Oh my squash, $6 for a tomato? Eek! I was raised with a garden overflowing with all colors of tomatoes, so maybe it blows my mind a little more than average. What I want to try is a black tomato, though I heard they taste “inky.

  8. Angela on July 22, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Yummm love Tres Leches. I used to work for a chef and this was the first cake she taught me to make.

Can’t wait to see which dresses you ordered. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Stepf on July 22, 2010 at 5:27 pm

ooh, can’t wait to see the dresses. I SO wish I could go to HLS, but every year it’s the same weekend as my bf’s bday. he’s turning 30, so I couldn’t ditch him for my bloggie friends. maybe next year!

Let us know how Hip Hop Abs go! I saw them on an infomercial ages ago and thought it looked really good, but I wasn’t in a position to buy them at the time!

  11. Ilana on July 22, 2010 at 6:01 pm

oh i <3 tomaters of all kinds. that is one whopping beasty of a boy though! the farmer's market (if you can call it that) in NYC has some gorgeous heirlooms…and it's juuuuusttt about that time…!

  12. Tina on July 22, 2010 at 6:09 pm

I can’t wait to see what dresses you get. I bet they are beautiful.

  13. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on July 22, 2010 at 6:13 pm

  14. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on July 22, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I love tomatoes! ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s really expensive though… but as long as it was delicious, it’s all good!

Can’t wait to see your dresses, you always have a great taste in fashion.

  16. Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews on July 22, 2010 at 6:24 pm

I love yellow tomatoes! They are just as easy to grow as red ones so if you have a garden, you should try them!

Post pictures of the dresses please!

    • Fitnessista on July 22, 2010 at 6:38 pm

i will as soon as i get them! ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. Melody robledo on July 22, 2010 at 6:30 pm

I didn’t realize how much heirloom tomatoes are I grew a bunch last year I’d making sandwiches and would end up just eating the tomato it’s great just sliced up plain

  19. d on July 22, 2010 at 6:51 pm

That tomato better have tasted orgasmic…LOL
I bought a watermelon without looking at the price…$21.34!!!!
I think Whole Foods is sneaky in their pricing.

  20. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on July 22, 2010 at 6:53 pm

You just made me feel so much better about spending $6 on a box of organic cherry tomatoes at Whole Foods– I didn’t even pay attention to how expensive they were when I threw them in my cart! But they are SOOO worth it!

Can’t wait to see the dresses you ordered! ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Amy on July 22, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Tres Leches?! Will you post the recipe for us? I’d love to make that!

  23. Jessica (Fit and Clean) on July 22, 2010 at 7:25 pm

That tomato looked beautiful ๐Ÿ™‚ I got some from the chicken farmer down the street from me (but his chickens aren’t laying eggs??) haha. I just got Insanity in the mail…I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but can’t wait! I totally got sucked in by the infomercial, and it looks like my fitness classes at my gym (LesMills) all rolled into one!

  24. holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com on July 22, 2010 at 7:38 pm

I can’t wait to see your dresses! I am sure they are beautiful. What an odd tomato — I love buying expensive fruits and veggies sometimes — it makes them so much more special, right? Just a few days ago I bought $7 worth of cherries — way overpriced but so delicious!

  25. Allison @ Food For Healing on July 22, 2010 at 7:55 pm

thats a pretty fantastic looking tomato, and an even better looking salad it was turned into!

  29. Exercise and Eat on July 22, 2010 at 9:13 pm

Luckyyyyy! I still have to find two!

  30. Rachael on July 22, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I always find it kind of funny that heirloom produce – the old school, salt of the earth kind of seeds – are so expensive nowadays. Where I live (NC), most of the farms in Appalachia sell all the varieties just because they always have, and so they’re super affordable. Cherokee purple tomatoes, striped green German Boys – who knew tomatoes could be so beautiful!

  31. Jackie (Army Wife) on July 22, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I’ve never heard of the website “Rent the Runway” but I think I will definately have to use it for the next military ball because the dresses look amazing!

    • Fitnessista on July 22, 2010 at 10:16 pm

it’s perfect for military formals because the dresses you get for those are only worn once anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com on July 22, 2010 at 9:51 pm

YAY!! enjoy hip hop abs!! id love to have him in my living room ๐Ÿ˜›

wow, thats gotta be one special tomato!! <3

  33. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on July 22, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Omg please move to CA!! At the farmers market (across the street from my house, year round) there are TONS of tomatoes (locally grown & organic even if not certified) that look just like that…all kinds of amazing heirloom varieties, purple, red, organe, green, mottled/multi-colored and they are about a buck each, tops. And, if you can’t make it to the market, the local CSA’s have BAGS of those tomatoes in your box/share every week. Girl. You have got to move. Sorry to point out the obvious, but you need to be on my side of the country ๐Ÿ™‚ Tell Pilot he needs a job transfer LOL

Ok so your dresses…now I am wishing I maybe was going to HLS. Not sure if I should. Hmm. Ok I know you will look awesome in them!

    • Fitnessista on July 22, 2010 at 10:16 pm

i would LOVE to be on your side of the country
if we get tucson, i can do road trips to come and chill with you! ๐Ÿ™‚
wish you were coming to hls, too…

  34. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on July 22, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Can’t wait to see the dresses! I haven’t tried Rent the Runway yet but I’m intrigued!

  35. Suzanne on July 22, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Those shirts are great. Alllllllllllllllllllso, what is that I spied in the background of your juice picture from your last post? Looks like a photograph from some sort of formal. Your readership respectfully demands a closer look.

I can never seem to remember which is which for barbells and dumbbells, despite regularly using them both. I also really like lifting with plates, which I guess is similar to using kbs in many respects, but there are some things unique to plates that I like. And I may or may not have once used a ghetto ass heavier than crap circa 1953 vaccum cleaner to do deadlifts once when I didn’t have access to a gym and set up a garage circuit with random stuff.

    • Fitnessista on July 22, 2010 at 11:02 pm

picturing you doing deadlifts with a vaccuum is awesome…and hardcore ๐Ÿ™‚
ok, i will post a close up for ya. it’s from a goofy formal two years ago ๐Ÿ˜‰

  36. Pure2Raw Twins on July 22, 2010 at 11:20 pm

We tried some of those other Shaun T videos, for some reason our mom had them, not sure why, haha anyways. They are alright we did the hip hop abs, it is different. Nothing like insanity. We liked insanity over it.

And that tomato is gorgeous. Isn’t tomato season great? HAHA

  37. Alexis @ Mission: Ambition on July 22, 2010 at 11:35 pm

That tomato is beautiful as is the salad you made!

Hip Hop Abs is interesting…not a very sweat-inducing workout and Shaun T’s EXTREMELY fabulous side comes out. But it’s so fun! ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s funny thought, I did Hip Hop Abs first and then I got Insanity and it’s almost like two completely different people…Shaun T’s got multiple trainer personalities ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 8:47 am

      hahah awesome ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Sarra H on July 22, 2010 at 11:53 pm

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 8:46 am

hahah no, it’s old. old school beach body ๐Ÿ™‚ they still run infomercials all the time, though! i’m still doing turbo and loving it ๐Ÿ™‚

  39. marie on July 22, 2010 at 11:59 pm

dood, i once spent $2.50 on an onion. i understand, it happens. and i think i need hip hop abs in my life. more so than “unemployed abs”

  40. Rachel in NC on July 23, 2010 at 12:14 am

Geez, that tomato should have been made of gold. I love tomatoes, but I think that is one I would have passed up! I’m glad you enjoyed it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Right now I’m waiting on my Cherokee Purples to ripen in my garden…wish they would hurry up!

  41. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on July 23, 2010 at 1:58 am

Awww the pilot is so great for supporting your dress cravings! Now thats a man ๐Ÿ˜‰

  42. Mimi on July 23, 2010 at 2:27 am

Six bucks for a tomato? That thing better be made of real gold… or at least taste like it. (Hey, it’s better than a lot of other things you could spend $6 on!)

  43. mm on July 23, 2010 at 3:32 am

I’m interested to hear your opinion on the Hip Hop Abs DVDs. I keep seeing the ads for them on the Insanity DVDs and I’m intrigued. ๐Ÿ™‚ And yay for Rent the Runway!! I haven’t used that site yet, but I think it’s a great idea and I probably will eventually. I can’t wait to see the dresses you chose!

  44. Super G on July 23, 2010 at 8:12 am

  45. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on July 23, 2010 at 8:42 am

If I were rich, I’d eat heirloom tomatoes all the time. Once I went on an heirloom tomato splurge at Whole Foods, paid in the double digits for them, and loved every second of my caprese salad. But that’s more of a once in a while thing–never regular!

  46. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on July 23, 2010 at 8:53 am

That tomato looks so good! The cafe I shadowed at this week has MASSIVE heirloom tomatoes that are super gnarled but so delicious. So good!

  47. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 23, 2010 at 8:57 am

I think a caprese salad is the best way possible to use up a $6 tomato. ๐Ÿ˜€
