Eat the vegetables
Hi friends ๐ How has your Friday been? Loved reading your comments on the discussion and fashion posts today <3
I think Bella enjoys my Snoogle pillow as much as I do ๐
Today was an exciting day. We opened escrow on our house โa short sale that has taken quite a while but is WAY worth the wait!- and should close end of July. Thereโs a light at the end of the tunnel! We have inspections next Friday ๐
Also, I ate vegetables. And I liked it.
(butter lettuce with goat gouda, local tomatoes and a homemade lemon vinaigrette; container of organic berries)
As you guys know, itโs been one chocolate pickle salt and vinger lovefest over here lately, but Iโve really been missing my veggies. Even though they donโt sound good to me at all, if you hand me a plate of them, I enjoy them just as much as I did to before the little nugget decided to take residence in my belly ๐ Earlier this week, we went to an amazing BBQ at a friendโs house and I ate an entire plate of grilled peppers, onions, fresh tomato, maple-pecan glazed salmon.. because I didnโt have to make it.
I was talking to a work friend who has had a baby (and still has a six pack), and asked her how she managed to eat clean during her pregnancy.
โI wanted to eat clean, so I did. It wasnโt a big deal. I knew what I wanted, I focused on it and made it happen. Just like you do if you want something to happen- you focus and do it.โ
โBut my normal, favorite clean eats sound horrible to me. Especially vegetables.โ
โJust eat the f*%#ing vegetables.โ ๐
โWow. Ok.โ
She didnโt say it in a mean way at all, just like โhey if you want it to happen, do it.โ It was a nice reality check because itโs not like I donโt enjoy eating my usual favorite things.. the act of preparing them makes me gag and die.
But today I manned upโฆ
(apricot and blueberry gluten-free oats with butter, egg whites)
prepped the food myself
(smoothie with banana, spinach, almond milk, protein powder, frozen strawberries, raw cacao powder, coconut oil and honey)
and loved it <3
It seriously felt SO good to get some real nutrients today. I wasnโt nearly as tired as I have been, which was a definite bonus.
This isnโt to say that Iโm not going to be indulging what my body is telling me it wants โtoday it wanted a gluten-free donut so I ate one.. a chocolate one- but itโs a crucial time to get some healthy things in there too ๐
It was a good day at work and now the Pilot is home, so weโre gonna hang out and take Bella to the park. Sheโs been home all day, so sheโll love shaking her legs out and seeing some other dog friends.
Have a great night and Iโll see ya in the morning <3
xoxo
Gina
Something to talk about: Is there a vegetable or fruit that you donโt like? I love it all.. except raw celery. Never have been a fan, probably never will be haha.
Glad you managed to squeeze some veggies in your diet. Sometimes I just don’t want veggies at all but I eat them anyways because they are healthy. Roasted veggies are my favorite!
Veggies and donuts… I’d say that sounds like a good balance to me! ๐
I actually can’t think of a fruit or veggie that I don’t like, if they’re prepared properly. I hate overcooked veggies though!
No eggplant or melons for me! Drives me crazy I want to like watermelon! I think sometimes we need tough love even if it makes us mad at first. Sometimes we need someone to say suck it up buttercup, quit whining and do something about it. I’m lucky I have many people in my life who LOVE to do that for me ๐
Hey Gina! I thought people aren’t supposed to eat goat cheese when they are pregnant? I notice that you have been eating it often and I’m just curious about that. Thanks!
yep i’ve been eating a TON of goat cheese… i told the pilot i could eat a wheel of cheese last night haha
as long as it’s pasteurized, it’s totally fine during pregnancy
Haha I like the way your friend said “just do it”. sometimes that is so true in life. We work things up to be a huge deal but they just need to be done. Simple. Hope your not gagging as you prep though!!!
I really do not like brussel sprouts and I don’t know if I EVER will. Give me some raw celery with pb and raisins for some good old ants on a log and I would be quite happy!
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the yolks of eggs are super good for a developing baby. They are chock full of choline which is essential to eye and brain development. That being said, I couldn’t look at a vegetable for MONTHS while pregnant. I did however, eat a lot of fruit and green monsters.
The texture of mushrooms just gives me the heebie jeebies but sometimes, if I’m feeling optimistic, I’ll have some. Just for a little variety…. spice of life, yesh?
I HATE raw celery too! Great minds… ๐ I can only stomach celery if it’s chopped up fine in soup or some other dish with a lot of other flavors/textures going on. Raw carrots really aren’t my thing either, although sometimes I like them. It’s an on and off thing there.
I’m so happy for you and the pilot! I hope everything goes well with the rest of the house-buying process!
I hate pineapples!!! Always have and my family used to try and sneak them in and trick me….but I can smell them from a mile away. ewwww
Mushrooms – blech. When i was pregnant I could not stomach the thought of eating roasted vegetables, especially brussels sprouts, which I loved pre-pregnancy.
Haha your friend is hilarious!! I love to be pampered but i’m more of a tough love kinda gal;);) It really is a good reminder about about just setting goals, making up your mind to accomplish them, and then not making excuses!! If your preggo and can do it there are no excuses for anyone else!
Oh and i LOATH cooked carrots!!! I love raw carrots and i can have carrot soup when they are all blended up but never ever ask me to eat mushy cooked carrots!! Or potatoes..unless they are roasted within an inch of their lives!!
The only fruit I don’t like is papaya. I think it smells like cheesy feet and tastes as I would imagine that does too ๐
I cannot eat fresh tomatoes. I try them once in a while to make sure it doesn’t change. It’s not the flavor, it’s the textures that makes me throw up. They smell delicious but that’s as far as I get.
This may sound weird, but I can kinda sympathize with what you’re going through right now. I’m trying to recover from an eating disorder, which involves eating more than the average person–and after restricting myself for so long, I no longer feel hungry and eating the amount required actually makes me feel sick. Just like you don’t really want to eat vegetables, I don’t really want to eat ANYTHING… but we both know what’s good for us, and we both know we have to eat it anyways. Keeping up a good attitude makes it easier, too!
I’m all for getting your veggies BUT I also think food should taste good… and while pregnant, a lot of veggies have tasted downright terrible to me! It’s all in the right veggie, I guess. I read that yellow and orange veg like squash are often better tolerated while pg for some reason and they are still very nutritious. I just can’t do things like baby greens right now, so random but they have become bitter to me!
I’m 24 weeks pregnant and while eating clean is important, it’s also important to not force yourself to eat things that don’t sound good. Some days the sight of certain vegetables make me sick, although pre-pregnancy they comprise the majority of my diet. It’s not worth beating yourself up about it, or worrying that you aren’t maintaing a pre-pregnancy diet. Things change and that’s okay. The point of being healthy is to be fluid, not to obsesses over whether your diet is a hundred percent what it normally is.
Just enjoy this time, maybe taking a break sometimes from what you might “normally” eat.
i’m definitely taking a huge break haha. just miss my veggies, though
i love em all except peas. i’ll eat them in a soup or something but that’s about it.
i wanted nothing to do with veggies my entire pregnancy and i definitely just rolled with the cravings. i only ended up gaining 23 lbs and was back to my pre-baby weight 3 weeks after delivery. it’s all about moderation ๐
I agree with your friend! I didn’t realize it – but I totally took that philosophy when I was pregnant. I never forced myself to eat anything when pregnant (strawberries repulsed me both times – and honestly, I’m still not too fond of them – I loved them before), but I did on many occasions just pick something healthy to eat. I wasn’t craving it (I was probably craving macaroni & cheese from a box or french fries), but I felt great after. It’s a wonderful food philosophy (as long as it’s not making you sick!).
That’s such an awesome attitude! I know that your baby will be even healthier if you make sure to give it all the nutrients it needs! As for veggies that make me gag…PEAS! I used to be really, really picky about vegetables. As I got older, I tried them all again and have come to love pretty much all of them. But peas? NOPE. Still can’t stand ’em. ๐
How much spinach and berries do you put in your smoothie. I make a similar one but it doesn’t have spinach, berries or cooconut oil (I have peanut butter instead of the oil). My trainer told me to only use 1/2 a banana in my smoothies do you use 1/2 or a whole one? Your’s looks great and I would never have thought there was spinach in it. I am trying to add more veggies to my diet and if I can disguise them in a smoothie that would be great. Thx.
i use a whole banana most of the time- sometimes half. 1 c berries and a handful of spinach ๐
I’m an ice cream fiend – must have a little bit for dessert every night (thankfully I buy the healthy kinds!), but when I was pregnant, even the thought of it made my stomach turn! Wierd! I craved hot dogs! ๐
That’s a good philosophy… even for those who aren’t pregnant. No excuses, eat the veggies!
