Shoe Snafu

A couple more Vegas purchases:

Headband

headband

and dress:

dress

both from Ann Taylor Loft.

They gave me a coupon for $25 off a $50 purchase when I bought the other dresses and sunglasses there, so I figured I’d use the coupon in Vegas since their selection is so much better. After the cashier put in the dress, headband and coupon, my total due was $10. I have no idea how it happened! But I liked it 🙂

Another purchase which I had no intention of buying:

shoes

Sandals from Banana Republic.

Those needed to happen because the universe punished me for not wearing heels on a date with my husband.

sandals

This is totally goofy but I’ll tell you anyway: the Pilot and I consult each other on outfit choices before we get dressed to go somewhere. Not to make sure we’re matchy-matchy or anything like that, but to make sure we’re the same level of dressed uppedness. For example, he wouldn’t wear shorts and a tee if I were wearing a dress and wedge shoes, he’d wear a button-up shirt.

Well, we were getting ready to go to dinner at Tao and he took out a button-up shirt to iron with black shoes and his Rock & Republic jeans.

I looked at him and said: Can we please be more casual tonight? My feet hurt and we have to walk so far. [I’d worn super high heels the night before  and walked all over the place like a champ]

It wasn’t a big deal to him, so I wore one of my more casual Ann Taylor dresses with the above silver sandals (one of my faves from Aldo). The bonus about Vegas is that it’s a total tourist trap and you can where pretty much whatever you want, wherever you go since there are so many types of attire everywhere.

Well, since I’m a giant klutz and almost ate cement 100 times during our short vacay, I tripped while we walked, caught myself before falling, and something felt wrong with my shoe. It was totally beyond repair and flapping around as I walked.

Thank goodness we were right by Caesar’s Palace when it happened, so we ran into the Forum Shops for a replacement pair from Banana Republic.

I kept joking with the Pilot that if I would have just dressed nicely and worn heels it wouldn’t have happened.. but I got a new pair of shoes out of it 😉

Have you ever had something break/rip/fall apart while you were wearing it?? What happened?

Aww, poor shoes! I’ve totally had a thong type flip flop break before! Total pain. And then I tried those stick on flip flops. They don’t work so well! They kept falling off. I’ve also had a button on my shirt pop off in the middle of the day. Not so good!

  2. Annie D @ Annie's Simple Life on June 10, 2011 at 10:17 am

My shoes have done the EXACT same thing. Not fun!!!!

  3. Daisy on June 10, 2011 at 10:18 am

I once “blew out a flip flop” while in college, walking across an intersection in a rain storm. It wasn’t pretty – I feel your pain!

  4. Sara K on June 10, 2011 at 10:21 am

Yeah I once had my flpflops break (and they were Tory Burch and just SNAPPED), so I had to hobble about barefoot and buy a pair of cheap beachy flipflops until I could get home.

  5. Holly @ The Runny Egg on June 10, 2011 at 10:22 am

I’ve had a swimsuit totally tear through the crotch after going down a water slide — yep, the super wedgie you get from those slides totally tore my suit in half! The worst part was that I didn’t even notice at first 🙁

  6. Jessica @ brighteyesandbushytales on June 10, 2011 at 10:23 am

Yay for impromptu new shoes!! 🙂 I had a spaghetti strap break off of a super cute bcbg lace tank right before going to dinner with my girlfriends. I borrowed a pair of scissors from my friend and quickly turned it into a halter!!! That was a close one!

  7. Krysta on June 10, 2011 at 10:23 am

I had a pair of sandals (similar to yours, but without the back strap) break while I was at a very crowded bar in nyc. I ended up using a hair tie around my foot to keep the sandal attached… worked in a pinch!

    • Fitnessista on June 10, 2011 at 10:25 am

wow that’s ingenuity right there 🙂

      • Amber L on June 10, 2011 at 5:04 pm

This is really helpful! My students are constantly breaking their flip flops (on accident) at recess. I always try to tape them together somehow so that they can get home with a shoe on. I’ll have to remember this trick!

  8. Ari@ThE DiVa DiSh on June 10, 2011 at 10:26 am

I hate when shoes break like that! But totally worth the new pair 🙂
ANd when I was prego I was super clumsy! For some reason I lost my balance all the time..maybe it’s happening to you 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 10, 2011 at 10:27 am

that could be because i’m usually klutzy but this is way worse!

  9. ellalinea on June 10, 2011 at 10:26 am

Oh dear, how did you break that sandal? 🙂 Good thing is that you got some new shoes out of it! They look just like a pair a bought recently 🙂

  10. Dani on June 10, 2011 at 10:28 am

one time while i was at work, the EXACT same thing happened to one of my sandals. and then an hour later, happened to the other. i stapled them together, but they broke on my walk to the metro. i literally had to get on the dirty dc metro barefoot.

  11. Chelsea Anthony on June 10, 2011 at 10:28 am

I definitely had that happen once. I bought an adorable pair of sandals for our honeymoon, as I walking down the stairs our house to show CJ the shoes, I slipped and the thong part of the shoe just ripped out from the sole..not repairable and I was so bummed!

  12. Jackie @ Baking Charms on June 10, 2011 at 10:29 am

Ooooh no RIP pretty shoes 🙁

  13. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on June 10, 2011 at 10:33 am

I was wearing heels and the heel came right off. Thank goodness it was at the end of the night. It was a nightmare walking back to the dorms though.

  14. nina on June 10, 2011 at 10:35 am

I had a flip-flop (just the rubber kind) break on me one time on my way home from class…I go to a school with a pretty big campus and I was still a decent distance from my room. It was about 2 PM on a Tuesday or Wednesday…but I just took both shoes off and walked the rest of the way! Thankfully no one noticed, or if they did, they didn’t say anything 🙂

  15. breakingsilence @ Freshman -15 on June 10, 2011 at 10:36 am

I’d just bought a super cute pair of sandals with a flower embellishment on the front like a month before. They were my first pair of “designer” shoes so I was proud of them! As I was going up the stairs at my school, the flower popped off the left sandal! I was so mad! Good thing I was wearing jeans that day, so it covered the spot, and I was able to superglue the flower back on when I got home.

  16. Jenny on June 10, 2011 at 10:38 am

Three pregnancy myths I was told and they coincidentally were true in my case.
    1. You become more forgetful
    2. You start becoming more spontaneous (before I knew I was pregnant, I randomly bought a new car and chopped all of my hair off nothing too big*…)
    3. You become more clumsy. 🙂

    • mary on June 10, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I was going to make sure you knew about the increased clumsiness, but it sounds like you’ve read the books (Gina). Be careful cooking later on, because dropping things is really common. I think our fingers change size or something! Between that and all the ligaments getting looser, it’s a clumsy time. But fun!

    • Julie S. on June 10, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I don’t think #1 is a myth – it totally happened to me when I was pregnant! (I’ve heard other people talk about it too.) I had post-it’s covering my desk at work just so I’d remember the simplest things! I even stuck the TV remote in the fridge at one of my low points! 🙂

  17. Trisha on June 10, 2011 at 10:53 am

Pretty much the same thing happened to my sister while we were at the airport going to Hawaii. My parents kept telling her to not wear her wedge sandals to the airport since we would be walking a ton and in a rush, but she did. So as we had to RUN through the airport, or sandals totally broke. And she was without sandals going to Hawaii!

  18. KATE on June 10, 2011 at 10:54 am

ooh no your poor shoes… I absolutely love the headband im so jealous of your purchase for $10. Amazing!

  19. Paige @Running Around Normal on June 10, 2011 at 11:06 am

Oh man I’ve totally done that. And that same thing happened to me while I was in Vegas (but in closed-toed shoes, not sandals) and we, too, stopped over at Caesar’s to buy new ones!! heh 🙂

  20. Natalie on June 10, 2011 at 11:07 am

Same thing happened to a pair of flip flops in an airport on a layover on our way to Vegas!

  21. Holly @ Pink Runner on June 10, 2011 at 11:24 am

I HATE when flip flops break! Then you are stuck! I loveeeee the headband!!!

  22. Laura J. on June 10, 2011 at 11:31 am

Love the new purchases, especially the headband– so pretty!

  23. Kelly F. on June 10, 2011 at 11:36 am

Haha! I love this…I was also in Vegas, and I actually DID fall on the strip. It was spectacular, and I skinned a knee. Luckily, we were right outside the hotel, so went in to clean it up. I still had to walk through the fancy shops in the Belaggio with a bloody knee like a 5 year-old! And sadly, my shoes had not broken- I am just that clumsy :)!

  24. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 10, 2011 at 11:36 am

Oh no!! Sorry to hear about the shoe! On the bright side though, I love your headband! Ann Taylor Loft is one of my favourite stores!

  25. Erin on June 10, 2011 at 11:42 am

I love the new headband and dress! Like you. I’ve tripped and broken a sandal before while I was out and about. Luckily, I was with my husband, so I waited in the car while he went into all of the stores. I also broke a strap on a dress once right as I was heading into a wedding! Again, luckily, someone who I was with had a safety pin and fixed me up. 🙂

  26. Sarah @ See Sarah Eat on June 10, 2011 at 11:48 am

Yep that has happened to me with shoes before, usually sandals or flip flops! But once we were bowling and I was still using old bowling shoes that I’d gotten as a teenager and I went up to bowl one time and the bottom of one of the shoes completely fell off so I decided it was time to throw them away. Luckily, we were with friends so I wasn’t too embarrassed and I just went and rented a pair 😉

  27. Joelle on June 10, 2011 at 12:01 pm

When I was 5 months prego I bought a really comfy pair of jeans that I wore the rest of my pregnancy and until my daughter was 5 months old. Needless to say they were paper thin by the end. I had to drop off my car at the dealer to get it fixed and as I got out I heard a tear. It was the jeans, right on my butt. Luckily I had a bin of donations in the backseat so I tied a sweater around my waist. When my husband arrived to pick me up I told to drive straight to macy’s. I cried the whole way because I had to throw them away!

  28. ashley on June 10, 2011 at 12:05 pm

at least you got new shoes! Last time I was in Vegas I completely ate it in front of total strangers. I was walking down the main strip and it was raining. Like you, I was wearing gladiator flats but they were cheap ones from Payless (never again!) and the back of them was totally smooth. Needless to say, I took one step in the rain, slipped, and fell down into somoene else! Omg, it was so embarassing and I had bruises for weeks after that. Down with payless shoes was my lesson there.

  29. Kelley on June 10, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I LOVE the headband and that dress! And I love Tao. I just love Vegas, period. I have never had a shoe break on me yet, but it’s one of my fears in life! I get grossed out if I had to walk around barefoot. HAHA

  30. Namaste Gurl on June 10, 2011 at 12:24 pm

LOVE all the purchase– so cute and your style is definitely similar to mine:)

  31. Molly on June 10, 2011 at 12:38 pm

This happened to me in NYC. Walking down the busy street and trying to cross the street quickly with 1/2 a shoe. Not. fun.

  32. Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) on June 10, 2011 at 12:38 pm

“Not to make sure we’re matchy-matchy or anything like that, but to make sure we’re the same level of dressed uppedness.” – B & I do that same thing ! I’ve totally had cheapie flip flops break on me… never bit the dust in super high heels bc I never wear ’em due to my patially metal spine 😉

I went to Aldo and got some SUPER comfy structured sandles. I saw yours (and am going back for the silver & now debating whether I should just order online), but got some black ones that didn’t even give me a blister when I proceeded to shop in them for 3 hours after purchasing. SCORE.

This link is to the ones I got… and now they’re 50% off ?!!?!??! ARGH! Wonder if they’d let me bring them back for the discount ?? Do you know if they would?

if it was less than two weeks ago, they should!

  33. Suzanne on June 10, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I was striking sets after a musical in college, wearing one of my favorite really old, worn, yet super comfortable pairs of jeans. It was about 1 AM, and I was super punchy and goofy, and I started dancing with a friend. He tried to dip me… and my jeans totally ripped. Like, ass hanging out. I was wearing a thong, unfortunately. At least I knew everyone there pretty well. The tech director was pretty annoyed with me, but I obviously couldn’t keep working like that! So I drove home, changed, and came back, and kept working (ass completely covered!).

  34. Amber from Girl with the Red Hair on June 10, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Haha I love this story because me and my fiance TOTALLY consult each other before getting dressed to go out too. I really rarely wear dresses so when I do, it’s a button-up shirt and nice shorts or slacks for him 😛

  35. melanie on June 10, 2011 at 1:18 pm

my bf and i totally check in about our level of ‘dress-up-edness’ when we go out and/or to holidays with family. 🙂 not goofy at all! we want to present a united front, i guess, so one doesn’t feel under- or over-dressed and so that we both have the same perspective on what type of evening it will be!

  36. Sarah on June 10, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I had a pair of shoes do that at Target about a week ago. Luckily I was able to buy another pair but they were attached with elastic. I looked like I was stealing them.

  37. Midwestern Magnolia on June 10, 2011 at 1:28 pm

I was driving to a super fancy dinner with some friends, and was wearing four inch super skinny black stilettos, when some guy pulled out in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes to avoid t-boning him. Thankfully, I didn’t hit him, and ended up fine…but the same cannot be said for my stilettos. I hit the brakes so hard that I ripped my heel right off. Too bad car insurance doesn’t cover fatal accidents to cute footwear. : (

On an unrelated note, I haven’t officially sent my pregnancy “congrats” yet…so, CONGRATS! I figured you were pregnant (given the weird cravings, sleepiness, etc), but what threw me off was all the shopping you’ve been up to lately. I figured that when you kept buying clothes that there was no way you were preggers. But, I’m pretty sure I’d do the same thing, haha. Store coupons are so sneaky and tempting! : )

  38. AJ on June 10, 2011 at 2:11 pm

That has happened to me TWICE with those type of leathery flat sandals! And both times were less than ideal situations! The first was when the BF and I were going to this outdoor concert in Buffalo, NY. I had to walk around barefoot and felt like a total hillbilly! The second time it happened right as I was leaving work! I had to walk down the hall past my CEO in barefeet! I tried to shuffle down the hall, but they just wouldn’t stay! AHHH!

  39. Elisabeth on June 10, 2011 at 2:17 pm

My sandals did the same thing yours did in the middle of EPCOT. I ended up with a very ugly pair of Crocs flip-flops as emergency replacements. Not a wide selection to choose from in the middle of an amusement park. But since Disney is pretty much a sea of feet in Crocs I’m sure nobody gave my ugly shoes a second thought.

  40. Chelsea on June 10, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Ah I’ve had that happen before with shoes! It’s horrible! I was at the Houston Rodeo with some friends going to a concert and my friend flat tired me (stepped on the back of my shoe on accident). Went to step and TEAR! It was horrible. We had to tape my shoe just because I was out in public and stadiums are NOT somewhere you want to walk barefoot *yuck*.

  41. Lindsay on June 10, 2011 at 3:01 pm

It was 8 years ago, I was a senior in high school and it was the day before graduation. Our school had a mother-daughter brunch and awards ceremony… I was walking across the stage to get one of my awards when the strap on my wedges totally ripped apart. Luckily, I didn’t fall!! I’m pretty sure I super glued them back together so I could wear them a few times. I’m still looking for a replacement! They were the best 🙁

  42. jen on June 10, 2011 at 3:11 pm

In high school, I was at a football game and was running on the very top of the covered wooden seats area and my jeans got caught on a nail and I went flying and riped the bottomof the leg lol, guess they were to long. I’ve had tong sandels break too it seems like it will happen to everyone at one time or another. I was on my way home from work and ran into a corner store to grab something and my purse strap broke right off, good thing it was an older purse.

  43. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on June 10, 2011 at 3:27 pm

I LOVEEEE that headband! It is absolutely adorable (along with everything else.. including you!)

  44. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on June 10, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Scott and I used to consult each other all the time too before we went out. The tshirt and jeans vs. little black dress and strappy heels type stuff…yes, it pays to be on the same page and not be at different levels of dressiness.

    And sorry about your shoes…ugh!

I’ve had shoes break, yes, while wearing them! Not fun and I literally just hobbled home on a broken heel. Whoops!

  45. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on June 10, 2011 at 3:50 pm

My fiance, Tyler and I do the same thing… we always consult eachother about our wardrobe and what we plan on wearing! 😀

  46. Danielle on June 10, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I literally just had that happen on my way to dinner Sunday night with my boyfriend! Except I was wearing heels! They were brand new wedges with a thong type top similar to yours, and thong part ripped off exactly like that! He gave me a hard time about wanting to go home and get a pair of even flip flops to wear, but took me home anyways 🙂 The night was salvaged, but what a bummer to begin it!

  47. Sandy on June 10, 2011 at 4:54 pm

That has happened on more than one occasion for me!! RIP cute sandals. 🙁 The worst is when it happens and you’re nowhere near a store to get new shoes!!

  48. Charlene on June 10, 2011 at 5:04 pm

That stinks that your sandals broke but yay for getting a new pair of shoes!!

I had my heel break off my boot once. My husband (then boyfriend) and I just arrived in NYC for a day trip and as I was walking off the train platform the 3″ heel on my right boot snapped off! Thank goodness Macy’s isn’t far so we ran there (well I hobbled as fast as I could) and waited patiently for the store to open so I could get a new pair of boots. My husband to this day still thinks it was all a rouse to get him to buy me new boots.

  49. Kara on June 10, 2011 at 5:06 pm

I had that happen with a bra once! I was working with a customer and all of a sudden, I felt a snap and the whole strap broke. I was working alone so I just excused myself saying i was going to look for an item that would work and readjusted myself the best I could. Later, I taped and stapled my bra back together but it was a long shift! I couldn’t wait to stop after work and buy a new one!

  50. Kayla on June 10, 2011 at 6:23 pm

My sandal broke last summer at work, it was a foam like base and a fabric part over the top. I couldn’t wear it at all broken like it was and I didn’t have any other shoes with me & needed to drive home. I didn’t have any glue to fix it and I couldn’t get it to stay together any other way so I ended up stapling the top fabric part to the base under where my foot went so it could hold the staples down so the top wouldn’t pull up while I walked. And for the record staples hurt like hell to walk on! 😛
