What I Ate Wednesday

Hi guys! Howโ€™s your day going to far? Thank you for the wonderful comments on this morningโ€™s virtual coffee date ๐Ÿ™‚ Iโ€™m excited to write back to them after this post goes up. Exciting news: Summer Shape Up officially begins June 16th. Buckle up, friends! As usual, the Shape Up includes four weeks of meal ideas, workouts and giveaways. Mark your calendars, and if youโ€™d like to sign up for my email newsletter (you also get things like weekly workout plans and this week was a sneaky giveaway), just leave a comment on this post and click the link to sign up.

Todayโ€™s post is a little different: What I Ate Wednesday (on a Thursday). When I ran a little blog survey a few weeks ago -weโ€™re working on a redesign- quite a few people said theyโ€™d like to see more everyday meals and a few requested What I Ate Wednesday posts. In the blog days of yore, I frequently posted daily meals. While I shared some fun combos and ideas, the photos make my skin crawl. They’re bad. With some of my old photos, I canโ€™t even tell what I was eating because the photos are so blurryโ€ฆ and brownish? Thanks for sticking with me through that ๐Ÿ˜‰ Since I like to take my time to photograph appealing meals (for the most part) and Iโ€™m usually feeding myself + Liv at the same time, itโ€™s a little trickier to take pictures or everyday stuff and make it look palatable.

Yesterday I kept the iPhone camera close by and did my best to snap a quick pic of my meals. The photos are not Pinterest-worthy in the least, but it was a good day of eats and snapshot of what a *normal* day looks like.

Breakfast: Banana egg pancakes (2 eggs, 1 banana, 1 heaping tablespoon of flax, whisked and cooked like pancakes) with almond butter, raspberries and maple syrup + coffee

Pancakes 1 of 1 2

Snack: muffin at the Childrenโ€™s Museum with Liv. She wanted one and they were 2 for $1 so I was stuck eating one too ๐Ÿ˜‰ It was delicious and I love that the cafe sources local ingredients while avoiding refined sugars and artificial preservatives and dyes.

Snack Part 2: Suja Glow for the drive home

Photo 75

Lunch: baked sweet potato rounds topped with zucchini (sautรฉed in coconut oil with salt and pepper), a diced chicken breast, and a mountain of salsa

Photo 67

1/3 chocolate bar (I love a bite of something sweet in the afternoon)

+ coffee #2

Snack: Trader Joeโ€™s Sweet and Savory Trail mix

We went to Point Loma Seafoods to pick up fish for dinner and were hungry on the way. I grabbed this bag of trail mix (THE BEST) and we enjoyed some on the drive.

Photo 76

Dinner: Baked halibut with butter, garlic and lemon, grilled asparagus and corn on the cob

Fish 1 of 1 2

Fish 1 of 1 3

Dinner 1 of 1 18

Not pictured: glass of cabernet while cleaning up the kitchen and packing up lunch/snacks for today

Workout: HIIT Scorcher + 20 minutes of easy spin in the garage

There you have it! A fairly typical day of eats ๐Ÿ™‚

Whatโ€™s something delicious or new that you ate today? Itโ€™s always fun to share ideas for healthy meals. (And on the not totally healthy but BOMB note: that trail mix. Itโ€™s a delectable combo of flavors, textures and chocolate chip varieties.)

See ya in the morning with Friday Faves!

xoxo

Gina

I love your blog! And cannot wait to participate in the Summer Shape-Up! After running the Boston Marathon a month ago, I need some cross-training for the body!

MIssed the survey..bummer. I LOVE your content but I must say searching for topics is very annoying on your blog. Posts show up one at a time instead of in nice thumbnails so you can search for the one you want like in other blogs (katheats is an excellent example of organization I love). I’m pregnant with my first and I love reading other bloggers’ week by week recap but it’s nearly impossible to read yours ๐Ÿ™ Keep up the great content though–it’s so impressive!

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2014 at 11:01 am

i know, and i’m so sorry the organization is so bad. we’re working on making everything easy to find, because even i have a hard time going back to find old posts! thank you for your feedback, and it’s the #1 thing we’re working on resolving. i feel like once i write a post it’s gone forever, which is a bummer because i work hard to create them. that should all be remedied in the next month or so!
      xoxo

I made the pancakes this morning for my birthday and added chia seeds instead of flax. I really loved them! I topped them with some greek yogurt and raspberries, almonds and blueberries. Thank you!

  21. Shelly on May 31, 2014 at 7:15 am

Gina, thanks for posting a WIAW- it’s been too long since your last one! Love seeing your eats as they’re a good balance of healthy and treats. Can I ask, would you say you eat less on non-teaching days? I think your past WIAWs have been teaching days with a lot more snacks for energy.

You are too hard on yourself about your old photos ๐Ÿ™‚ As someone who has been reading since 2009, your blog was always so fun and refreshing and I don’t remember the pictures being that bad. I think every HLB has had a learning curve with food photography.

    • Fitnessista on June 1, 2014 at 7:40 pm

thank you- that’s nice to hear!!
i think i eat less on non-teaching days. i’m definitely not as hungry, and feel like i don’t need to quickly fuel up before the next class. when i was teaching four or so classes a day, i’d easily double what i ate in the recent WIAW post

      • Shelly on June 2, 2014 at 4:19 am

Thanks Gina. It’s always hard to balance the need to fuel up before a workout vs the need to not upset the tummy! I’m constantly working on refining this. My staples for pre-workout energy include bananas, oats and chocolate but your WIAWs give me some good alternatives!

Hope to see more WIAWs ๐Ÿ™‚

Personally, I don’t mind if the pictures are not, as you say, Pinterest-worthy, because we get how things go when having a meal. Taking pictures of every meal is exhausting, but I also know that trying to take pretty pictures of meals and make them look appetizing is hard when you’re eating something that just doesn’t photograph well. If you did one of those What I Ate Wednesday posts regularly, maybe allow yourself to take pictures of whatever you’re eating and not worry that it’s a fabulous picture. Do like you’e done in the first image of breakfast here – use a pretty plate and let the food stand as it is – a realistic representation of what you ate. It doesn’t have to be pretty. I think those of us who read cooking magazines, health food blogs, etc. sometimes get overwhelmed with the thought that we have to try to make all our meals be these splendid endeavors, when really, they’re just food we may have scarfed down before heading out the door. While that’s not ideal (sitting down to eat is best, I know), it happens. And even if you’re snapping a pic of your plate and Livi’s plate (even if it’s on a napkin or something else), I think your readers would understand, and even appreciate it that you shared your day’s eats, the way you live it. Does that make sense?

    • Fitnessista on June 2, 2014 at 11:20 am

totally. thank you! it’s nice to know it’s not a big deal.

    Hey Gina!

Thanks for sharing your WIAW! I had a quick question, I find myself snacking after dinner and before bed. I was wondering if you had any ideas for some healthy post-dinner snack ideas? Thanks!!
