Musical Cardio Workout
Morning! Howโs your day going?
We replenished a small amount of the weights stash last night.
Pretty much everything made it here to San Diego without a hitch, but weโve been unable to track down my dumbbells. My 35 lb kettlebell made it, along with my jump rope and spin bike, but I like having dumbbells for strength sessions in the garage. Iโm sure weโll find them packed in a random box (when we move again), but for now, I got a 10 lb kettlebell for core work and a set of 12 lb weights.
Workout was a spin and weights session, and it felt so good to move after driving most of the day.
+ The Bachelorette
(Andi was my favorite on The Bachelor but The Bachelorette is killing me. But, I canโt look away.)
I did some upper bore and core workout + some musical cardio.
Musical cardio is one of my favorite workout techniques. As a fitness instructor, I LOVE when exercises and movements correspond with the music during a class. When I taught spin, making playlists was a huge effort because I wanted to make sure each track was motivating for what we were doing (like slow, intense songs for hills and upbeat powerful songs for sprints). This is a huge reason why I love BodyPump so much: they design the exercises to match the music perfectly. And, itโs amazing.
When Iโm doing cardio on my own, Iโll change things up based on my playlist, or what Pandora decides to give me ๐ Hereโs a little cardio workout I put together using my Spring Workout Playlist, as it includes many of my current music faves.
Hereโs the workout if youโd like to give it a try!
Whatโs your current favorite workout song? Are you watching The Bachelorette?
Hope you have a wonderful day!
xoxo
Gina
Loooove when spin classes are based on the music. It makes it so much more fun! I haven’t tried it on my own before but I just might have to now.
I love love love musical cardio! It actually drives me crazy when classes are not synced up with the music and it is just on in the background. I think it is all the years of dance training in me that makes me crave the musical cardio. Love your workout!
I was wondering what technology you use for your playlists? Do you buy the songs off iTunes and do the full gig or do you use something like Spotify?
I would love to see a video recorded spin work out sometime if you are up for it! I also have a spin bike at home and miss the live classes. There aren’t a lot of options of recorded spin workouts on YouTube either, how sad!
Looking forward to trying this playlist! Even more excited for Summer Shape Up!
I’m wanting to add to my weight collection — where did you buy your weights?
The c9 kettlebell is from Target, so I’m guessing thats where the dumbbells are from too. That’s where I get all of my weights. They are well made & not expensive. Even better when they are on sale or there’s a cartwheel! ๐
Music is such a huge part of my workouts. I have been a figure skater for 26 years, so my body loves to move to music. I find it so motivating. And I am with you…I can’t look away from the Bachelorette. Arg!
All workouts need to incorporate music! It makes it so much more fun!
I haven’t gotten into this season of the Bachelorette but my MIL keeps calling me to ask me what I think because she wants to discuss it with me. I’m thinking eventually I’ll need to binge watch so we can chat about it. ;p
Music is HUGE for me, too, one of the reasons I love Pure Barre so much, and why I used to attend spin classes. Great post, getting prepped this week for SSU by drinking lots of water and going to bed earlier. Hope your eye twitch stays at bay ๐
My current favorite workout song is actually a yoga song and wouldn’t work for cardio but it’s beautiful during a yoga practice! Diamonds in the Sun by Girish

This is such a fun idea!!
I actually like to workout without music. I find I get distracted with it. Unless I’m going for a walk, then I’m all about the music.
This might be a stupid question, but what do you mean by upper bore workout?
i think she means upper body, but her brain was already on to the word ‘core’ hahaha
Haha – I just picked up the (almost) same weights! A kettlebell and 12lb weights. I was needing a revamp in my little home gym (aka a spare room with some weights and a stability ball). ๐
I’m a huge fan of musical cardio, especially in my spin class!
I love this playlist! Since I am just teaching Bodypump and CXWORX right now and no freestyle classes I haven’t made a playlist in a while…and I miss it!! I’m going to have to add these songs to my mix for running ๐ And YES! I am watching the Bachelorette and loved Andi on the Bachelor…can’t wait to see how the rest of the season pans out.
I’m with you. I cannot do a workout or a class unless the music goes with it. I actually stopped going to one person’s spin class because none of her music corresponded well to the moves.
I die for The Bachelorette! And I won’t even apologize for it. So fun to watch all those cutie-patooties vie for her affection. My mom and I sometimes watch together or teacher-friends text throughout the episode ( I think it makes the hubs feel better that I’m not the only one watching such garbage–ha!).
Sorry G, but every time I hear “Turn down for what” in my strength class, I wanna rip my ears off. Luckily my trainer doesn’t follow you because he can pretty much beat me down =). Anything DMX gets me pumped and Slim Shady will do… (of course the PG versions if you can find it).
Turn Down For What!! I’m loving that song for cardio right now! I do a similar workout with music on the treadmill. Have you heard of the app Rock My Run? It has some really great DJ mixes that are perfect for cardio! Most of them are free and you can choose your mix based on genre, bpm, length, etc. Check it out if you haven’t already!
I am really love that Fancy song, I know everyone is loving it, but is so easy to workout to!
I’m so bored by this season of the Bachelorette! It’s not even been worth blogging about this time around. But this video at least partially redeems it haha ๐

Thanks for the workout idea! I really need to change up my current routine ๐ I actually haven’t watched The Bachelor since Season 1! *Gasp* I know ha! Every time I hear about it I want to watch it though. My current fav work out song is definitely Wake Me Up! Love it!
I’m with you on the Bachelorette! I loved her on The Bachelor, but this season is definitely trying….. but I too can’t turn it off, and I was so sad that it wasn’t on this week LOL! I feel like Eric was spot-on on the last episode – I was thinking his exact thoughts before he said anything. I’m excited to see where the season goes, but I feel like she’s turned into tv-Andi ๐
Lol, it must be time to stop listening to the same Pandora stations and turn the radio on for a bit. I do not recognize any one of those songs, and usually I am the pop culture champ in our house. Oh no, am I getting old?!?
I LOVE tailoring workouts to the song at hand. Must be an old dancer habit, huh?
I’m reading this while watching the Bachelorette!!
It’s my biggest pet peeve is when the music doesn’t match the workout. Thanks for the new playlist…there’s a lot of songs on here I don’t have on my iPod yet.
I have always been a bachelor/bachelorette fan….I can’t stop watching it ;)!
Hey Gina! Great recipe!
My favorite workout song right now is “Problems” by Ariana Grande. I love using it in spin for a standing attack or seated sprint/cadence burst!
Have fun at your stitch fix event!
This is such a great article. It is very important to have good music to workout to because it sets the tone! Thanks for sharing.
